Gail Peter Borden
R1,697 Discovery Miles 16 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the interrelationship of representational methods and material systems as fundamental drivers of the design process. Identifying four primary categories of representational logics - point, line, surface, mass - each category is illustrated through four precedent projects that deploy iterative material sensibilities. As a collection, this text provides a comprehensive categorization of the architectural design process. Through the comprehensive definition of categorical typologies, it illustrates the collective capability of this conceptual methodology. By unpacking projects through their specific design devices, the collective analysis reveals the impact of material techniques and methods of representation as a generative tool. Broad in scope, it identifies and uniformly analyses some of the most significant projects from the last century, including: UK Pavilion Shanghai - Heatherwick Studio, Shanghai,China Gatehouse - Office dA, Beijing, China Maison Colonial - Jean Prouve, France/Africa de Young Museum - Herzog and de Meuron, California USA Montreal Expo 67 - Buckminster Fuller, Montreal, Canada Jean Marie Tjibou Cultural Center - RPBW, Noumea, Indonesia House III - Peter Eisenman, New York, USA Barcelona Pavilion - Mies van der Rohe, Barcelona, Spain Tel Aviv - Scott Cohen, Tel Aviv, Israel Los Manantiales - Felix Candella, Mexico City, Mexico Yokahama Terminal - FOA, Yokahama, Japan Pantheon, Rome, Italy Tres Grand Bibliotheque - Rem Koolhaas, OMA, Paris, France Brother Claus Field Chapel - Peter Zumthor, Switzerland Embryonic House- Greg Lynn Richly illustrated with consistent, clear and precise line drawings, the book presents a series of iconic precedents through a unique analytical and graphic sensibility.

Cardiff - Architecture and Archaeology in the Medieval Diocese of Llandaff (Hardcover): John R. Kenyon, Diane Williams Cardiff - Architecture and Archaeology in the Medieval Diocese of Llandaff (Hardcover)
John R. Kenyon, Diane Williams
R4,503 Discovery Miles 45 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Association's 2004 conference focused mainly on the architecture and archaeology of the medieval diocese of Llandaff, comprising much of the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. Contributors consider Roman and early medieval south-east Wales, including surviving Christian monuments and the early history of Cardiff. There is a detailed analysis of the c. 1200 wall-paintings at the priory church of Ewenny, where ambitious decorative work replaced a hitherto unknown Romanesque scheme. The early Gothic architecture of Llandaff Cathedral is shown to be related to some of the great contemporary ecclesiastical works in England and elsewhere, such as Glastonbury Abbey, and the unusual form of the cloister arcade at Tintern Abbey is analysed. Other papers cover the late Gothic architecture in south Wales, two 14th-century tomb monuments at Abergavenny, and a study of the magnificent carpentry of a number of late medieval rood-screens that survive in parish churches. The volume concludes with an account of the evidence for post-medieval work in churches in the diocese.

Solar Architecture in Cool Climates (Paperback, New): Colin Porteous Solar Architecture in Cool Climates (Paperback, New)
Colin Porteous
R3,647 Discovery Miles 36 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'A must-read for practitioners, teachers and others interested in or working with energy use in the built environment, including a delightful set of examples' Ann Grete Hestnes, former President of the International Solar Energy Society Solar Architecture in Cool Climates is an invaluable primer on low energy building design, combining accessible information with convincing arguments enabling new techniques to be implemented in daily practice. Approaching the topic in a thematic manner, the book provides inspiration, an understanding of key principles and technical data on the design of solar buildings in higher latitudes. The text is enlivened through direct experience of case studies from Europe and North America dealing with new-build, retrofitting and conceptual projects that outline future potential (the principles being equally applicable to equivalent southern latitude locations. The authors examine the dilution of additional costs through different strategies, the tensions between energy efficiency and environmental quality, and the proactive control of energy in building design. Promoting flexibility and opportunity to a diverse audience, including those who use, procure and finance buildings, the book aims to bring the design of 'green' solar buildings in cool climates from special interest status into the mainstream. Broader environmental issues relating to solar architecture are addressed in the final chapter, again drawing on case studies from the authors' own wide experience. Solar Architecture in Cool Climates is written for architects and other building designers, students of architecture and other professionals interested in sustainable architecture, renewable energy and engineering.

Urban Housing Forms (Hardcover): Jingmin Zhou, Ian Colquhoun Urban Housing Forms (Hardcover)
Jingmin Zhou, Ian Colquhoun
R3,513 Discovery Miles 35 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over three-quarters of the world's population live in cities where the need for affordable urban housing of good design is vital to the quality of urban living. Zhou and Colquhoun look at a wide variety of solutions to this urban design problem showing that understanding of the important design principles is a basic requirement of sustainable housing in the future. The authors discuss the whole range of different housing types, from an international perspective, approaching both 'concave' housing, such courtyard design, and 'convex' housing including tower blocks. They discuss the famous argument at the beginning of the 20th century between P. Berlage and Le Corbusier that focused on open environment and closed environment. Zhou classifies living environment into two types, "concave" and "convex." In concave housing layouts, dwellings are grouped around closed, secure environments such as courtyards. This form of layout is most successful with inward looking living space. Convex forms of housing look out to an open environment, as do tower blocks.

R374 R340 Discovery Miles 3 400 Save R34 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The story of a personal housing crisis that led to a discovery of the true value of home. *'You will marvel at the beauty of this book, and rage at the injustice it reveals' George Monbiot* *'Incredibly moving. To find peace and a sense of home after a life so profoundly affected by the housing crisis, is truly inspirational' Raynor Winn, bestselling author of The Salt Path* Aged thirty-one, Catrina Davies was renting a box-room in a house in Bristol, which she shared with four other adults and a child. Working several jobs and never knowing if she could make the rent, she felt like she was breaking apart. Homesick for the landscape of her childhood, in the far west of Cornwall, Catrina decides to give up the box-room and face her demons. As a child, she saw her family and their security torn apart; now, she resolves to make a tiny, dilapidated shed a home of her own. With the freedom to write, surf and make music, Catrina rebuilds the shed and, piece by piece, her own sense of self. On the border of civilisation and wilderness, between the woods and the sea, she discovers the true value of home, while trying to find her place in a fragile natural world. This is the story of a personal housing crisis and a country-wide one, grappling with class, economics, mental health and nature. It shows how housing can trap us or set us free, and what it means to feel at home.

Urban Design - Method and Techniques (Paperback, 2nd edition): Rafael Cuesta, Christine Sarris, Paola Signoretta, J.C. Moughtin Urban Design - Method and Techniques (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Rafael Cuesta, Christine Sarris, Paola Signoretta, J.C. Moughtin
R1,789 Discovery Miles 17 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book deals with a wide range of techniques used in the urban design process. It then goes on to relate these techniques to a unique, comprehensive account of method. A method of urban design is developed which has sustainability and environmental protection at the centre of its philosophy. Previously, literature regarding the urban design method has been almost totally neglected; this book introduces the topic to the reader. This revised Second Edition encompasses the latest techniques including the development of geographic information systems and financial techniques which help evaluate projects.
A number of techniques are illustrated by example or case study. Where techniques are discussed they are located within the structure of the design process. The book develops a logical framework for a process, which includes problem definition, survey, analysis, concept generation, evaluation and implementation. It is this framework which leads toward the development of an urban design method.
This book is a practical guide for students or professionals in the early part of their careers. It is organized so that each chapter provides guidance which readers would have otherwise had to discover for themselves, often with some difficulty.
* Shows how the techniques of urban design relate to method
* Outlines the techniques in detail and shows how to apply them
* In-depth case studies illustrate how theory has been translated into practice

Ad Quadratum - The Practical Application of Geometry in Medieval Architecture (Hardcover, New edition): Nancy Y. Wu Ad Quadratum - The Practical Application of Geometry in Medieval Architecture (Hardcover, New edition)
Nancy Y. Wu
R4,206 Discovery Miles 42 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The purpose of the project is to provide the most up-to-date survey on issues dealing with practical geometry and how it might have been applied in the design of medieval architecture. Chronologically, the topics cover a wide span - from early Medieval through Late Gothic. Geographically, the monuments under discussion range from Early Medieval Florence through Carolingian Germany, Crusader Cyprus, Romanesque France and Gothic England. The applications of both geometry and metrology are considered in this volume, often with illustrations generated by computer-assisted design (CAD) software. The project therefore offers recent scholarship in the field, as well as cutting-edge technology which helps propel the pursuit of such studies. To this end, the project is the first of its kind both in terms of its focus and its comprehensiveness. Such a project is sorely needed to introduce this highly specialized discipline to other historians of art, history, and science of the Middle Ages, as well as historians in most humanistic areas.

Stay Cool - A Design Guide for the Built Environment in Hot Climates (Paperback): Holger Koch-Nielsen Stay Cool - A Design Guide for the Built Environment in Hot Climates (Paperback)
Holger Koch-Nielsen
R1,731 Discovery Miles 17 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In hot dry or warm humid climates, more than half of the urban peak load of energy consumption is used to satisfy air-conditioning demands alone. Since the urbanization rate in developing countries is extreme, the pressure placed on energy resources to satisfy the future requirements of the built environment will be great, unless new, more cost-effective measures can be introduced. Stay Cool is an essential guide for planning and design using active design principles and passive means to satisfy human comfort requirements specifically in these climate zones, based on examples of traditional and modern constructions. The book demonstrates how a design strategy for urban environments and individual buildings, incorporating naturally occurring resources and specific energy-efficient technologies, can create a location, form and structure that promote significant energy-savings. Such strategies can be applied to low cost housing, or indeed to any other buildings, in order to improve comfort with passive means and low energy budgets. Following an outline of climatic issues, characteristics and thermal comfort requirements, the book details the available techniques and technologies that can be used to shape both built and external environments, the building envelope, material selections and natural ventilation and cooling methods to satisfy both human requirements and the need for energy efficiency. It also includes an active design checklist and summary of available design checking tools, a rehabilitation guide for existing urban, building and external environments, and solar charts. Planners, architects, engineers, technicians and building designers will find Stay Cool an inspirational guide and an essential reference when working with planning and design of the built environment in hot dry and warm humid climate zones. It will also be of benefit to students, academics and researchers with an interest in sustainable and energy-efficient architecture techniques and practice.

The Modular Housing Handbook (Hardcover): Simon Bayliss, Rory Bergin The Modular Housing Handbook (Hardcover)
Simon Bayliss, Rory Bergin
R1,481 R1,345 Discovery Miles 13 450 Save R136 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modular construction has the potential to improve housing quality, speed up delivery and reduce building costs - so why isn't everyone doing it? This practical handbook combines real-world advice on designing modular housing with a compelling argument for off-site construction as a means for architects taking a greater role and achieving more influence in their housing projects. Focusing on the benefits as well as the challenges of modular construction, this book illustrates that off-site construction need not act as a design constraint and can in fact provide an opportunity for greater design impact. Richly illustrated with recent case studies and featuring over 100 photographs of exemplar projects, The Modular Housing Handbook provides inspiration as well as timely, practical advice.

The Villa Farnesina - Palace of Venus in Renaissance Rome (Hardcover): James Grantham Turner The Villa Farnesina - Palace of Venus in Renaissance Rome (Hardcover)
James Grantham Turner
R3,063 Discovery Miles 30 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The frescoes of Peruzzi, Raphael and Sodoma still dazzle visitors to the Villa Farnesina, but they survive in a stripped-down environment bereft of its landscape, sealed so it cannot breathe. Turner takes you outside that box, restoring these canonical images to their original context, when each element joined in a productive conversation. He is the first to reconstruct the architect-painter Peruzzi's original, well-proportioned, well-appointed building and to re-visualize his lost facade decoration-erotic scenes and mythological figures who make it come alive and soar upward. More comprehensively than any previous scholar, he reintegrates painting, sculpture, architecture, garden design, topographical prints and drawings, archaeological discoveries and literature from the brilliant circle around the patron Agostino Chigi, the powerful banker who 'loved all virtuosi' and commissioned his villa-palazzo from the best talents in multiple arts. It can now be understood as a Palace of Venus, celebrating aesthetic, social and erotic pleasure.

Designing Memory - The Architecture of Commemoration in Europe, 1914 to the Present (Paperback): Sabina Tanovic Designing Memory - The Architecture of Commemoration in Europe, 1914 to the Present (Paperback)
Sabina Tanovic
R763 Discovery Miles 7 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This innovative study of memorial architecture investigates how design can translate memories of human loss into tangible structures, creating spaces for remembering. Using approaches from history, psychology, anthropology and sociology, Sabina Tanovic explores purposes behind creating contemporary memorials in a given location, their translation into architectural concepts, their materialisation in the face of social and political challenges, and their influence on the transmission of memory. Covering the period from the First World War to the present, she looks at memorials such as the Holocaust museums in Mechelen and Drancy, as well as memorials for the victims of terrorist attacks, to unravel the private and public role of memorial architecture and the possibilities of architecture as a form of agency in remembering and dealing with a difficult past. The result is a distinctive contribution to the literature on history and memory, and on architecture as a link to the past.
