This title discusses the work of two of the most eminent contemporary British architects, Edward Jones and Sir Jeremy Dixon. With distinguished careers spanning four decades, their works separately and, since 1989, in partnership range from the Royal Opera House in London to Mississauga City Hall in Canada and from the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds to the Business School for Oxford University. Although they have built throughout the UK, it is to London above all that Dixon Jones have devoted their energies - and it is on London that they have made the greatest impact. Some of the capital's most important public buildings - the Royal Opera House, the National Portrait Gallery, the courtyard of Somerset House - have been given a new life by their deft interventions, transforming what were previously somewhat austere institutions into vital and valued components of the public realm. In this publication, the buildings and projects of Jeremy Dixon and Edward Jones, from their student days to the present, are fully documented with drawings, photographs and essays by critics and clients, as well as comments by the architects. Alan Colquhoun, Robert Maxwell and Kenneth Powell provide an in-depth critical interpretation while Sir Jeremy Isaacs and Charles Saumarez Smith - clients for the Royal Opera House and National Portrait Gallery respectively - offer a unique insight into the process of working with Dixon Jones.
Numerical Modeling of Masonry and Historical Structures: From Theory to Application provides detailed information on the theoretical background and practical guidelines for numerical modeling of unreinforced and reinforced (strengthened) masonry and historical structures. SEVEN LESSONS ON ARCHITECTURAL MORPHOGENESIS It is the author's fourth extensive book on drawings in architectural design. It follows the Thought Palaces (1999), Thinkink (2010) and Urban Innuendoes (2013). All these books favored drawings as compared to text, but this book has no written text at all (with the exception of the acknowledgements and the contents page). Its motto is: drawings speak in many thongs, they form the text of this book. It contains seven architectural projects, all designed by the author, and with one exception, they are all international competitions about complex and significant public buildings. None of his winning projects are among them, because the purpose of the book is to provide insights related to the secrets of the intuitive and rational process of the thoughts to matter transformation. Steel has, over centuries, played a crucial role in shaping our material, and in particular, urban landscapes. This books undertakes a cultural and ecological history of the material, examining the relationship between steel and design at a micro and macro level - in terms of both what it has been used to design and how it has functioned as a 'world-making force', necessary to the development of technologies and ideas. The research for the book is informed by diverse fields of literature including industry journals, contemporary accounts and technical literature - all framed by rich, early accounts of iron and steel making from the middle ages to the opening of the industrial age, and most notably, the crucial works of Vannoccio Biringuccio, Georgius Agricola, Andrew Ure and Harry Scrivenor.
