Comprehensive and Integrative Architectural Design (Paperback): Julius Chiavaroli Comprehensive and Integrative Architectural Design (Paperback)
Julius Chiavaroli
R1,214 Discovery Miles 12 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Comprehensive and Integrative Architectural Design addresses integrative design - design that bridges the gap between architectural design and architectural technology. With its roots in sustainability, and with the universal acceptance of data driven design, it is widely acknowledged that integrative design completed in a comprehensive way is the process that will lead to a more sustainable and responsible built environment. Organized in order of the design process itself-pre-design, schematic design, and design development-this title demonstrates and instructs how design and technology are integrated. Another important feature of the text is how it clarifies the different ways in which the collateral organizations in architecture approach the discipline. This textbook brings together all the variations of terminology and the perspective of each organization in support of creating a comprehensive and integrative architectural design. Comprehensive and Integrative Architectural Design provides architecture students and faculty a definitive resource to assist them in executing an integrative solution to an architectural project. There are literally thousands of decisions that must be made when designing a building, from pre-design to schematic design to design development. With over 150 color illustrations, this text provides a framework for both instructors and students.

Energy-Efficient Timber-Glass Houses (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Vesna Zegarac Leskovar, Miroslav Premrov Energy-Efficient Timber-Glass Houses (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Vesna Zegarac Leskovar, Miroslav Premrov
R3,537 R3,277 Discovery Miles 32 770 Save R260 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book discusses combining timber and glass, two eco materials, with a view to developing an optimal contemporary energy-efficient house with an attractive design. Furthermore, the book connects an architectural design approach with structural research to show the possibilities of stabilizing the building with an increased size of the glazing. Research results where the glazing is considered as a load-bearing structural element are therefore presented in a manner leading to the development of an optimal model of the timber-glass house, considering both the structural and energy related aspects. The presented research work can be useful to designers and future experts in their planning of optimal energy-efficient timber buildings. The study is based on using timber and glass, which were previously neglected as construction materials. With suitable technological development and appropriate use, they are nowadays becoming essential construction materials as far as energy efficiency is concerned. However, their combined use is extremely complicated, from both the constructional point of view as well as from that of energy efficiency and sets multiple traps for designers. A good knowledge of their advantages and drawbacks is thus vitally important, which is shown in the present monograph. Energy-efficient timber-glass houses was selected by the Slovenian National Research Agency as an extraordinary scientific achievement in the field of technical sciences/civil engineering for the year 2013.

Sustainable Retrofitting of Commercial Buildings - Cool Climates (Paperback): Simon Burton Sustainable Retrofitting of Commercial Buildings - Cool Climates (Paperback)
Simon Burton
R1,537 Discovery Miles 15 370 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Whilst sustainability is already an important driver in the new building sector, this book explores how those involved in refurbishment of commercial building are moving this agenda forward. It includes chapters by developers, surveyors, cost consultants, architects, building physicists and other players, on the role they each can play in enabling refurbishment to be commercially, environmentally and socially sustainable. Case studies from northern climates show real examples of different building types, ages and uses and will demonstrate what action has been taken to create more sustainable buildings. The chapters raise and discuss all the relevant issues that need to be considered in retrofitting decision making. Changing standards, planning, process management, financing, technical issues, site organisation, commissioning and subsequent building management are all considered. The book demonstrates that buildings can be made comfortable to occupy, easy to manage and low in energy demand and environmental impact.

Cost Optimal and Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEB) - Definitions, Calculation Principles and Case Studies (Hardcover, 2013... Cost Optimal and Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEB) - Definitions, Calculation Principles and Case Studies (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Jarek Kurnitski
R3,281 Discovery Miles 32 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cost optimal and nearly zero energy performance levels are principles initiated by the European Union s (EU) Energy Performance of Buildings Directive which was recast in 2010. These will be major drivers in the construction sector in the next few years, because all new buildings in the EU from 2021 onwards are expected to be nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB).

This book introduces the technical definitions, system boundaries, energy calculation methodology and input data needed to set primary energy based minimum/cost optimal and nZEB requirements in national energy frames. Worked examples are provided to illustrate the calculation of delivered, exported and primary energy, and renewable energy contribution. Five case studies of high performance nZEB office buildings across Europe are reported to show alternative technical solutions and to draw some general design rules based on completed nZEB buildings. Specific features of the nZEB design process, especially in the early stages, and architectural competitions are included. These describe important design issues in the scoping and conceptual design phase, allowing design streams to be controlled so that specified targets can be met.

This book is intended for readers who need to be aware of or are working with the energy performance of buildings for decision makers in public and private sectors, architects, engineers, construction clients, consultants, contractors, manufacturers and students.

The editor of this book, Professor Jarek Kurnitski has made major contributions to the preparation of the European REHVA nZEB technical definition and has developed energy calculation frames for current Estonian and Finnish energy performance regulations. He is the leader of nZEB research at Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia and Aalto University in Finland, and he has over 300 publications."

Reimagining Industrial Sites - Changing Histories and Landscapes (Paperback): Catherine Heatherington Reimagining Industrial Sites - Changing Histories and Landscapes (Paperback)
Catherine Heatherington
R1,354 Discovery Miles 13 540 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The discourse around derelict, former industrial and military sites has grown in recent years. This interest is not only theoretical, and landscape professionals are taking new approaches to the design and development of these sites. This book examines the varied ways in which the histories and qualities of these derelict sites are reimagined in the transformed landscape and considers how such approaches can reveal the dramatic changes that have been wrought on these places over a relatively short time scale. It discusses these issues with reference to eleven sites from the UK, Germany, the USA, Australia and China, focusing specifically on how designers incorporate evidence of landscape change, both cultural and natural. There has been little research into how these developed landscapes are perceived by visitors and local residents. This book examines how the tangible material traces of pastness are interpreted by the visitor and the impact of the intangible elements - hidden traces, experiences and memories. The book draws together theory in the field and implications for practice in landscape architecture and concludes with an examination of how different approaches to revealing and reimagining change can affect the future management of the site.
