Michael Palin 2
R362 R234 Discovery Miles 2 340 Save R128 (35%) Ships in 15 - 30 working days

Michael Palin's first televised travel adventure was screened as part of the BBC series Great Railway Journeys.

'Confessions of a Train Spotter' (1980) saw him travel the length of Britain by train. Setting off from Euston he includes diversions to lines beyond the inter-city network; a trip on the Flying Scotsman; visits to York's railway museum and Edinburgh at Festival time. He crosses the breathtaking Forth Railway Bridge, and after travelling over 785 miles reaches the Kyle of Lochalsh.

Palin's second Great Railway Journey (1994) takes him from the ancient walled city of Londonderry to the most western tip of Ireland. He travels his 'family line' as he attempts to trace his great grandmother who left Ireland for the USA over 150 years ago. His trip through a still war-torn Northern Ireland takes him on to Belfast before heading south to Dublin, the capital of the Irish Republic, and on to Wexford, Waterford, the little village of Buttevant and finally Kerry's Dingle Bay, the most western point of Ireland.

Opening with the funeral of Winston Churchill in January 1965, season nine continues with Nonnatus House entering a bold and innovative era. As the tower blocks multiply, and a new East End rises from the ashes of the old, society becomes more prosperous, but more complex.

Our familiar team of medics and midwives face unexpected challenges as the population shifts, rules change, and old diseases come back to haunt them. Meanwhile, their own experiences are fuelled by love, loss, and doubt - and the very fabric of their lives is jeopardised when Nonnatus itself comes under threat of demolition.

Includes the 90 minute Christmas special:
As Christmas approaches, a bout of influenza sweeps through both Nonnatus House and the Turner family. When Mother Mildred declares that God is calling her to set up a branch house in the Outer Hebrides, it seems an ideal opportunity for the nuns and midwives to convalesce in the bracing Scottish air. As they recover, they will also be able to help the island, where there is a nursing and doctor shortage. Sister Monica Joan associates the Outer Hebrides with St Eustace's White Stag, a symbol of Christ, and is thrilled at the idea of travelling there. However, she soon discovers to her annoyance that she is being left behind with Sister Hilda and Sister Frances. Within a week, Dr Turner, Shelagh, Mother Mildred, Trixie, Sister Julienne, Valerie and Lucille set off on their journey to the Outer Hebrides, where they are to stay in a freezing cold converted church. As the team set about establishing an antenatal clinic and treating the local population, they must battle not only the weather and bleak terrain but also the suspicions of some of the islanders.

Britain, the early ‘80s. At Cachet Windows, the stakes are high and so are the staff.

Vincent Swan, Cachet’s head of sales, excels at selling his favourite product – himself. Martin Lavender has a university degree, which in the world of sales is as much use as an aerated condom. Brian Fitzpatrick is an excellent liar with no principles: he makes a pretty good salesman. And then there’s Carol, Britain’s lousiest receptionist. They are getting filthy rich thanks to uPVC double-glazing, a dirt-cheap alternative to timber.

To you and me, it’s just plastic. To them, it’s white gold.

Emma Woodhouse, beautiful, clever, and rich, has very little to concern her. When her governess marries advantageously, Emma congratulates herself on her great success as a matchmaker. So, when she meets the pretty, naive, and socially inferior Harriet, Emma is ready to practise her skills again - ignoring warnings of the harm she could cause from friend and neighbour, Mr Knightley.

As she sets about meddling with the affairs of the village of Highbury, Emma carves a trail of confusion, disappointment and disaster that risks Harriet’s happiness, and much to her surprise, her own happiness too.

This fresh, funny, and perceptive adaptation by Sandy Welch, acclaimed writer of North and South, Jane Eyre, and Our Mutual Friend, brings Jane Austen’s comic masterpiece about village life, love, and self awareness to life with a stellar cast. As our heroine embarks on a journey that challenges her naivety and her social preconceptions it leads her to realise that she has become so focused on the lives of others that she has failed to see what’s in front of her own eyes..

It is now 1962, and the Nonnatus House team are as committed to caring for the people of Poplar as always. However, the social revolution in the outside world is mirrored by change and challenge much closer to home.

As they strive to help mothers and families cope with the demands of childbearing, disability, disease and social prejudice, our beloved medics must make choices - and fight battles - of their own.

Season 6 will see them laugh together, cry together, and pull together, supporting each other as never before.

The Christmas Special will see the series transported to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Nonnatus House receives an SOS from a tiny mission hospital. Understaffed, underfunded, and with a poor water supply, struggling Hope Clinic is faced with closure. Can our much-loved medics and midwives make a difference to the people whose lives depend upon its work? Far from home and everything familiar, the team are both shaken and exhilarated by the challenges they face - and by the time the mission trip is over, some lives are permanently changed.
