The brief chapters in this booklet provide insights into the life
of one of Christ's most beloved disciples, Simon Peter. Adapted
from sermons first published in a local newspaper and preached in a
pastoral setting, these four chapters follow a
devotional-expositional approach similar to that used in the
author's books Patterns to Ponder from Bible Characters and Mighty
Man of Valour: A 31-Day Devotional from the Life of Gideon. As
such, this booklet provides a sampler of the author's non-academic
writings.
In today's world, it can be difficult to maintain your faith.
Those seeking a greater understanding of the Bible have numerous
excellent theological commentaries available to them, but due to
volume and depth, many of these are out of reach of laypeople.
Others lose contact with the Bible, because it no longer seems
relevant to life. They use a superficial knowledge of science and
evolution to exclude God and faith from their experiences.
"The Layman's Commentary: Volume 6-Book of the Acts of the
Apostles" presents a passage-by-passage explanation of the Book of
the Bible known as Acts. In this sixth volume, author John Devine
covers the activities of the disciples from the final days of the
ministry of Jesus on earth to the birth of the Church.
With the realization that salvation that comes by faith in Jesus
Christ alone was not just for the Jewish people but for people of
all nations, the message spread into Asia Minor and Europe, to
Rome, centre of the then known world within the space of thirty
years.
From the sermons of Peter, Stephen and Paul the basic doctrine
of the early Church is revealed as in the major creeds presenting
the Christian Worldview. Evidence for the Historicity of Jesus is
given.
In today's world, it can be difficult to maintain your faith.

Others lose contact with the Bible because it no longer seems

evolution to exclude God and faith from their experiences.
"The Layman's Commentary: Volume 4-Books of the Major and Minor
Prophets "presents a passage by passage explanation of the
seventeen books of the Bible, known as the Prophets. In this fourth
volume, author John Devine covers the period from the division of
the United Kingdom of Israel to the end of the Monarchy and the
Return of the Remnant from exile in Babylon. He explains God's
continued self-revelation and plan for a relationship with
humankind in his dealings with the nation of Israel. He considers
the conflict and consequences of the desire of the individual to be
independent from God. Further understanding of God's moral
standard, which has been the backbone of Western society, is given.
Devine also lays out the basis for a full and rewarding
relationship with God.
"The fourth book in The Layman's Commentary series, Volume
4-Books of the Major and Minor" Prophets shows that the prophetic
messages are still valid today because God's character has not
changed - nor has the frailty of human nature. People look for an
anointed One who will come and put all things right. Predicted by
most of the prophets he is seen as the 'Hope of Israel', a prophet,
priest and king who will include all nations of the earth in his
eternal kingdom.

Do you sometimes wish that the Bible could make your decisions for
you? Donald Baker is familiar with this desire. He writes, "God has
given me free will, and while I appreciate his confidence in my
ability to choose, there are times when I wish that he would make
the decisions for me." The Bible won't give you a direct answer to
each choice--or dilemma--you face. But the Bible will teach you how
to make decisions wisely, confidently and in harmony with God's
will. These studies introduce you to the Bible's lessons on
decisionmaking--and show you how to apply what you learn to your
own decisions, big and small. This LifeGuide Bible Study in IVP's
revised format features questions for starting group discussions
and for meeting God in personal reflection, as well as a new "Now
or Later" section following each session to help you act on what
you learn.

New features of the revised LifeGuides include special options
for group activities, additional questions for personal reflection,
a "Now or Later" section with practical follow-up activities for
use after the study or between sessions, expanded and improved
leaders' notes and an attractive, redesigned format for easier
reading.
Beginning with the new guides Miracles and Pleasing God
(released in February 1999), all new LifeGuides will be presented
in the new format. In addition more existing volumes will be
revised every year to ensure that all our LifeGuides continue to be
effective Bible study resources for the twenty-first century.
Truth seems to be an outdated concept. We need to be reminded of
the biblical value of integrity. These studies invite us to find
contentment in who we are and how we follow God as we become people
of integrity.
The Overcomer Series is Volume 3 of a continuing curriculum series
highlighting Old Testament characters who faced great challenge and
adversity as they fulfilled their unique calling to advance the
Kingdom of God in their generation. Already adopted for use on the
mission fields of India, this curriculum has been translated into
five Indian languages and has proven to be a valuable discipleship
tool in equipping the emerging churches and the training of its
leaders. The three volume storying curriculum along with the
Curriculum Guide that accompanies it offer several months of study
and are designed to deepen the reader's understanding of the
application of lessons and principles modeled through the lives of
each Bible character. The three volume series is rapidly becoming a
valuable resource in equipping readers to become present day
servants of the Most High God with the hope of making lasting
impact for the cause of Christ in our present day generation. Mary
Ann Bishop is a Bible teacher, recording artist, conference
speaker, and missionary. She and her husband David have worked for
years in China, Vietnam, Laos, Turkey and the nation of India
bringing hope and help to those in need of the gospel. Mary Ann
travels to India with teams of women twice a year training church
planters and pastors through the storying method set forth in her
three volume curriculum series called Servants of the Most High
God. David and Mary Ann reside in Pawleys Island and are the
parents of two children, Wesley and Elizabeth. They are the proud
grandparents of their first grandchild, Lily Jones Bishop. Bruce
Chandler teaches art classes, paints commissions as well as local
and historical landmarks for prints. Bruce also paints murals for
residences, churches and businesses, the largest of which is 79
feet long and located in Douglas Airport, Charlotte, North
Carolina. The highest paintings are located in numerous Super
Wal-Mart stores, and the most humorous can be found in a
Litchfield, SC beach house. Bruce has illustrated four books, been
featured in Craft and Design Magazine, and designed a painting for
the cover of Seabreeze Magazine.

How can something be created from nothing? How does Genesis relate
to the New Testament and Christian faith? In this eight-week study,
homiletics professor and pastor J. Ellsworth Kalas approaches
Genesis as a very personal and almost intimate book. Instead of
viewing it as an academic study or as a puzzle to be solved, the
author reads Genesis in a very personal, up-close way.
Easy-to-follow, step-by-step suggestions for leading a group are
provided, as well as questions to facilitate class discussion.
Immersion, inspired by a fresh translation the Common English Bible
stands firmly on Scripture and helps readers explore the emotional,
spiritual, and intellectual needs of their personal faith. More
importantly, they ll be able to discover God s revelation through
readings and reflections."
Why do Christians differ in spiritual gifting? One of the main
reasons is because of the unique ways God places and graces each of
them. In Romans 12:6, Paul said, "Having gifts (faculties, talents,
qualities) that differ according to the grace given us, let us use
them." Every Christian is uniquely called, uniquely placed, and
uniquely grace-gifted to minister as a member of the body of
Christ. In this profoundly insightful study into the modus operendi
of God in the New Testament - how He uniquely calls, places, and
graces believers - Guy expounds on ministry grace and teaches
believers how to locate, cultivate, and use their unique
grace-gifts. Those who do will be "good stewards of the manifold
grace of God" and fulfill their ministry as a unique member of the
body of Christ.
Thomas Gardner artistically describes Jesus--"the Word made
flesh"--as a poem penned by God for the world, and John--author of
the Fourth Gospel--as the poem's interpreter. John's structural
patterns, repetitions, and narrative interventions invite readers
to experience for themselves the beauty of the divine poem. John in
the Company of Poets deepens this invitation by re-imagining the
biblical text through the eyes of such artists as Emily Dickinson,
Robert Frost, Wendell Berry, and T. S. Eliot, offering a literary
reading of the Gospel based upon their powerful poetic replies.
Poets are our best readers, contends Gardner, and his deft analysis
forges a fresh path into the issues and tensions of John's Gospel.
