Conversations on Russia - Reform from Yeltsin to Putin (Hardcover): Padma Desai Conversations on Russia - Reform from Yeltsin to Putin (Hardcover)
Padma Desai
R2,082 Discovery Miles 20 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Much of the discussion of Russia's recent post-Communist history has amounted, both in Russia and the West, to a series of monologues by strong-minded people with starkly divergent views. In contrast, Padma Desai's conversations with influential, intelligent participants and observers provide the reader with a broad, nuanced view of what has and has not happened in the last fourteen years, and why. Conversations from Russia will thus serve as a much-needed reference volume, both for academics who study Russia and for laypeople who only have vague perceptions of what has occurred in Russia since the collapse of Communism.
In conversations with important figures like Boris Yeltsin, George Soros, Anatoly Chubais, and Yegar Gaidar, Desai considers questions like why the Soviet Union fell apart under Gorbachev, what went wrong with economic reforms after Gorbachev, whether the privatization of Russian assets could have been managed differently, and what the prospects are for the Russian economy in the near future. Desai, a recognized expert in the field of Soviet studies, ties the interviews together with an introduction, ultimately reaching her own judgment on each issue considered in the conversations. This book will appeal to researchers and students in developmental economics, political economy, and Soviet studies, and educated laypeople interested in Russia.

Human Resource Strategy - Formulation, Implementation, and Impact (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Peter A. Bamberger, Michal Biron,... Human Resource Strategy - Formulation, Implementation, and Impact (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Peter A. Bamberger, Michal Biron, Ilan Meshoulam
R5,419 Discovery Miles 54 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is human resource strategy? How are human resources strategies formulated and how can we explain the variance between what is espoused and what is actually implemented? What impact - if any - does human resource strategy have on the organization's "bottom line," and how can this impact be explained? Is there one best HR strategy for all firms, or is the impact of HR strategy on performance contingent on some set of organizational, technological or environmental factors? Human Resource Strategy, 2nd edition, provides an overview of the academic and practitioner responses to these and other questions. Applying an integrative framework, the authors review 30 years' worth of empirical and theoretical research in an attempt to reconcile often-conflicting conceptual models and competing empirical results. Complex theoretical models and scientific findings are presented in an accessible and relevant way, in the context of the strategic decisions that executives are forced to make on a regular basis. This new edition features an updated literature review, coverage of the latest challenges to HR strategy, new mini-cases, discussion questions, additional examples, and an emphasis on the strategic implications of the research, making it an ideal resource for students and practitioners alike.

Research methods can be a daunting topic - Researching Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality for your Dissertation is a unique text that takes away the stress, worry and confusion by providing a step-by-step, user friendly guide to all you need to know to successfully research and compile your dissertation. Researching Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality for your Dissertation provides a discussion of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches, looking at key differences and similarities. A critical evaluation of these different research approaches is provided and, importantly, a discussion on selecting the appropriate approach(es) for your dissertation, including a discussion and evaluation of mixed methods research. It takes the reader from the initial idea and topics, through to lit reviews, methodology, presenting and analysing results and successfully making conclusions. Unlike other texts available, the text includes case studies based on the author's own research to demonstrate different research approaches and techniques, providing an opportunity for criticism and a discussion on 'learning from mistakes.' Divided into 7 chapters Researching Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality for your Dissertation discusses: * Developing your research topic - including the ethics statement; * Literature review - how to do it and how to get the most from it; * Methodology - which approach (es) are most suitable, with clear links between ontology, epistemology and methodology and how these concepts relate to the actual dissertation; * Presenting Results - how this can be done clearly and coherently * Analysing and Discussing Results - whether they are qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods; * Conclusions: your findings, your limitations and your recommendations. A must-have text for all students on how best to conduct research, compile your findings and to present them in the resulting dissertation. Peter Mason is Professor of Tourism Management, Bedfordshire University, Visiting Professor of Tourism, London South Bank University and has a fractional position as Lecturer, London Metropolitan University.

Niche News - The Politics of News Choice (Hardcover, New): Natalie Jomini Stroud Niche News - The Politics of News Choice (Hardcover, New)
Natalie Jomini Stroud
R1,970 Discovery Miles 19 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fox News, MSNBC, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Rush Limbaugh Show, National Public Radio - a list of available political media sources could continue without any apparent end. This book investigates how people navigate these choices. It asks whether people are using media sources that express political views matching their own, a behavior known as partisan selective exposure. By looking at newspaper, cable news, news magazine, talk radio, and political website use, this book offers the most comprehensive look to-date at the extent to which partisanship influences our media selections. Using data from numerous surveys and experiments, the results provide broad evidence about the connection between partisanship and news choices. This book also examines who seeks out likeminded media and why they do it. Perceptions of partisan biases in the media vary - sources that seem quite biased to some don't seem so biased to others. These perceptual differences provide insight into why some people select politically likeminded media - a phenomenon that is democratically consequential. On one hand, citizens may become increasingly divided from using media that coheres with their political beliefs. In this way, partisan selective exposure may result in a more fragmented and polarized public. On the other hand, partisan selective exposure may encourage participation and understanding. Likeminded partisan information may inspire citizens to participate in politics and help them to organize their political thinking. But, ultimately, the partisan use of niche news has some troubling effects. It is vital that we think carefully about the implications both for the conduct of media research and, more broadly, for the progress of democracy.

Constructing Neoliberalism - Economic Transformation in Anglo-American Democracies (Hardcover, New): Jonathan Swarts Constructing Neoliberalism - Economic Transformation in Anglo-American Democracies (Hardcover, New)
Jonathan Swarts
R2,192 Discovery Miles 21 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Constructing Neoliberalism presents a rich analysis of the shift to neoliberal economic policies in four Anglo-American democracies - Canada, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand - over the course of the 1980s and 1990s. This period witnessed a dramatic shift away from traditional post-war consensus policies of active state economic intervention, public ownership, and full employment toward those informed by an ideological commitment to deregulation, privatization, entrepreneurialism, and freer trade. Jonathan Swarts argues that this transformation was not simply a marginal adjustment in existing economic policies, but rather the result of political elites seeking to reshape what he calls their societies' "political-economic imaginaries." Swarts demonstrates that this shift cut across traditional party lines, and that in all four cases, the result was a new set of intersubjective norms about appropriate economic policies, the role of the state in the economy, the expectations and aspirations of citizens, and the very nature of an advanced industrial democracy in a globalizing world.

Broadcasting Democracy - Radio and Identity in South Africa (Paperback): Tanja Bosch Broadcasting Democracy - Radio and Identity in South Africa (Paperback)
Tanja Bosch
R190 R149 Discovery Miles 1 490 Save R41 (22%) Out of stock

The media play a key role in post-apartheid South Africa and is often positioned at the centre of debates around politics, identity and culture. Media, such as radio, are often said to also play a role in deepening democracy, while simultaneously holding the power to frame political events, shape public discourse and impact citizens' perceptions of reality. Broadcasting Democracy: Radio and Identity in South Africa provides an exciting look into the diverse world of South African radio, exploring how various radio formats and stations play a role in constructing post-apartheid identities. At the centre of the book is the argument that various types of radio stations represent autonomous systems of cultural activity, and are 'consumed' as such by listeners. In this sense, it argues that South African radio is 'broadcasting democracy'. Broadcasting Democracy will be of interest to media scholars and radio listeners alike.

Ruling Ideas - How Global Neoliberalism Goes Local (Hardcover): Cornel Ban Ruling Ideas - How Global Neoliberalism Goes Local (Hardcover)
Cornel Ban
R3,888 Discovery Miles 38 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Neoliberal economic theories are powerful because their domestic translators make them go local, hybridizing global scripts with local ideas. This does not mean that all local translations shape policy, however. External constraints and translators' access to cohesive policy institutions filter what kind of neoliberal hybrids become policy reality. By comparing the moderate neoliberalism that prevails in Spain with the more radical one that shapes policy thinking in Romania, Ruling Ideas explains why neoliberal hybrids take the forms that they do and how they survive crises. Cornel Ban contributes to the literature by showing that these different varieties of neoliberalism depend on what competing ideas are available locally, on the networks of actors who serve as the local advocates of neoliberalism, and on their vulnerability to external coercion. Ruling Ideas covers an extended historical period, starting with the Franco period in Spain and the Ceausescu period in Romania, discusses the economic integration of these countries into the EU, and continues through Europe's Great Recession and the European debt crisis. The broad historical coverage enables a careful analysis of how neoliberalism rules in times of stability and crisis and under different political systems.

Conflicts of Interest and the Future of Medicine - The United States, France, and Japan (Hardcover, New): Marc A. Rodwin Conflicts of Interest and the Future of Medicine - The United States, France, and Japan (Hardcover, New)
Marc A. Rodwin
R1,302 Discovery Miles 13 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As most Americans know, conflicts of interest riddle the US health care system. They result from physicians practicing medicine as entrepreneurs, from physicians' ties to pharma, and from investor-owned firms and insurers' influence over physicians' medial choices. These conflicts raise questions about physicians' loyalty to their patients and their professional and economic independence. The consequences of such conflicts of interest are often devastating for the patients--and society--stuck in the middle.
In Conflicts of Interest and the Future of Medicine, Marc Rodwin examines the development of these conflicts in the US, France, and Japan. He shows that national differences in the organization of medical practice and the interplay of organized medicine, the market, and the state give rise to variations in the type and prevalence of such conflicts. He then analyzes the strategies that each nation employs to cope with them.
Unfortunately, many proposals to address physicians' conflicts of interest do not offer solutions that stick. But drawing on the experiences of these three nations, Rodwin demonstrates that we can mitigate these problems with carefully planned reform and regulation. He examines a range of measures that can be taken in the private and public sector to preserve medical professionalism--and concludes that there just might be more than one prescription to this seemingly incurable malady.

STOP TELLING STORIES. START SELLING THEM!

The world is rightly obsessed with the incredible power of a good story. Unfortunately too many of us take that to mean that it is our own story that’s important. It’s not. The magic happens not when we tell our customers the story of our past, but when we sell them a new story of their future. One in which we play a part.

As a salesperson (and make no mistake, you are a salesperson) you have two jobs. Job No. 2 of the storyseller is to help your clients and customers slay their dragon. Job No. 1 of the storyseller is to help them see their dragon.

You are in the dragon hunting business, but dragon hunting ain’t easy – there’s work to be done. In this short and highly practical book, renowned speaker Richard Mulholland shares with you how to use powerful stories to change minds, drive sales, and solve problems.

Here Be Dragons isn’t just a how-to book, it is far more a why-to, and mostly a what-to-do book.

Nigeria and South Africa account for about a third of Africa’s economic might, and have led much of its peacemaking and peacekeeping initiatives over the last two and a half decades. Both account for at least 60 per cent of the economy of their respective sub-regions in West and Southern Africa. The success of political and economic integration in Africa thus rests heavily on the shoulders of these two regional powers who have both collaborated and competed with each other in a complex relationship that is Africa’s most indispensable.

Nigeria remains among South Africa’s largest trading partners in Africa, while both countries have cooperated in building the institutions of the African Union (AU) and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). Nigeria and South Africa have also sought to give Africa a stronger global voice, while competing as rivals on issues such as peacemaking in Cote d’Ivoire, Libya and Guinea-Bissau. While Nigeria is the most ethnically diverse country in Africa, South Africa is the most racially diverse state on the continent. Both countries have had a tremendous cultural impact on the continent in terms of Nollywood movies and South African soap operas.

The first three chapters of this book assess Nigeria/South Africa relations in the areas of politics, economics and culture. The second section has three essays that examine the issue of hegemonic leadership in relation to Nigeria and South Africa. The third section consists of four essays on the contributions to the bilateral relationship and leadership roles of four prominent South Africans and Nigerians: Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Olusegun Obasanjo and Sani Abacha. The final section of the book analyses three technocratic Nigerian and South African ‘visionaries’: Adebayo Adedeji, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

South Africa And The World - A Political Economy Journey Through Time (Paperback): Mills Soko South Africa And The World - A Political Economy Journey Through Time (Paperback)
Mills Soko
R330 R270 Discovery Miles 2 700 Save R60 (18%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Over the past 20 years the global political economy has experienced its most profound shifts since the onset of the industrial revolution. In South Africa and the World, Mills Soko reflects on some of the salient issues that have pervaded public discourse during this time, analysing them within the context of the contemporary South African political economy and of the country’s position in the world.

Arranged thematically, the essays were all written during a defining period in recent history, a period that has witnessed, among others, the accession of China to the WTO, the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US, the invention of the iPad, the birth of Facebook, the 2008/9 global financial crisis, Brexit and the global coronavirus pandemic which began at the end of 2019. The turbulent multipolar world demands visionary political and economic leadership, supported by institutions well attuned to contemporary conditions. Such leadership is in short supply. Nor is the existing institutional architecture sufficiently equipped to deal with a complex array of economic, social, environmental, technological and demographic challenges.

Mills Soko highlights what has not worked in terms of politics, leadership, foreign policy, the economy, the African development trajectory, corporate ethics, international trade, global governance, and the thread which underlies all these issues – the importance of strong, decisive and accountable leadership. He counters his criticism with what has worked and offers views on how some of the problems that have constrained progress in South Africa and the world can be solved.

A central message emerges from his writings: leadership and governance matter, whether in the national or international context. It is a message that permeates all the chapters in the book. And it goes to the heart of what South Africa has gone through over the past two decades and where it is today.
