The Pledge - ASA, Peasant Politics, and Microfinance in the Development of Bangladesh (Hardcover): Stuart Rutherford The Pledge - ASA, Peasant Politics, and Microfinance in the Development of Bangladesh (Hardcover)
Stuart Rutherford
R2,058 Discovery Miles 20 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Association for Social Advancement (ASA) of Bangladesh recently topped Forbes magazine's first-ever list of the world's best microfinance banks. This is an extraordinary achievement for an organization that started life as a revolutionary movement aiming to bring a peasant-led government to the newly created and desperately poor South Asian nation of Bangladesh. This book tells the story of how ASA's determined but practical-minded founder and leader, Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, steered his organization through the maze of competing ideas about how best to develop poor countries. The book sets Choudhury's accomplishments in the context of Bangladesh's chaotic but inspiring postcolonial history and is rich in its understanding and descriptions of how ordinary village and slum dwellers deal with the complicated web of politics, international donations, and development expertise. The author's long and intimate knowledge of ASA and of Bangladeshi microfinance makes this one of the best case studies of a development organization available to the general public.

Working with Rural Communities (Paperback): David Francis, Paul Henderson Working with Rural Communities (Paperback)
David Francis, Paul Henderson
R1,083 Discovery Miles 10 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'a host of eminently sensible practical suggestions...the strength of this book is both that it explores with some rigour the meaning of 'rural', of 'community' and of 'development' and that it has clearly in view the practical needs of the lone, inexperienced field worker...' Community Development Journal Vol. 28 No. 2, 1993P '...deserves to become an essential reference book for all those with an interest in rural community work' Adage Pural communities are facing increasing and contrasting problems, with high levels of unemployment or conflict arising from suburbanisation and the arrival of newcomers. This book provides a strategic framework for dealing with these issues, with an innovatory model for planning and practising rural community work. It is relevant to work in all types of areas and for a wide range of agencies, identifying key management and evaluating tasks. Important connections are made between existing knowledge and worker's own experiences. Concluding with a review of policies this is an invaluable guide for rural community work students and professionals.

Leverage for Good - An Introduction to the New Frontiers of Philanthropy and Social Investment (Hardcover): Lester M. Salamon Leverage for Good - An Introduction to the New Frontiers of Philanthropy and Social Investment (Hardcover)
Lester M. Salamon
R2,819 Discovery Miles 28 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the resources of both governments and traditional philanthropy barely growing or in decline, yet the problems of poverty, ill-health and environmental degradation ballooning daily, it is increasingly clear that new models for financing and promoting social and environmental objectives have become urgently needed. Fortunately, however, a significant revolution appears to be underway in the way in which social and environmental purposes are being financed. The heart of this revolution is a massive explosion in the instruments and institutions being deployed to mobilize private resources in support of social and environmental objectives. Where earlier such support was limited to charitable gifts, now a bewildering array of new instruments and institutions has surfaced-loans, loan guarantees, private equity, barter arrangements, social stock exchanges, bonds, secondary markets, investment funds, and many more-all of them designed to leverage not just the tens of billions of dollars of philanthropic grants but the hundreds of billions, indeed trillions, of dollars of private investment capital. While the changes under way are inspiring and by no means trivial, however, they remain largely uncharted in any systematic fashion. This monograph, and of the companion volume for which it also serves as the introductory chapter, is designed to overcome this problem, to provide the first comprehensible and accessible roadmap to the full range of important new developments taking place on the frontiers of philanthropy and social investment. In the process, it seeks to broaden awareness of these developments, increase their credence and traction, and make it possible to maximize the benefits they can generate while acknowledging the limitations and challenges they also face.

Legality and Legitimacy in Global Affairs (Hardcover): Richard Falk, Mark Juergensmeyer, Vesselin Popovski Legality and Legitimacy in Global Affairs (Hardcover)
Richard Falk, Mark Juergensmeyer, Vesselin Popovski
R2,004 Discovery Miles 20 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Legality and Legitimacy in Global Affairs focuses on the problematic relationship between legality and legitimacy when a nation (or nations) intervene in the work of other nations. Edited by Mark Juergensmeyer, Richard Falk, and Vesselin Popovski, this volume brings together a wide range of contributors with a broad set of cases that consider when such intervention is legitimate even if it isn't legal--and vice versa. Chapters cover humanitarian intervention, nuclear nonproliferation, military intervention, international criminal tribunals, interventions driven by environmental concerns, and the export of democracy. The book argues that while some interventions may not be technically legal, they may well be legitimate (e.g. Kosovo), and also concentrates on establishing the grounds for legitimate intervention. Some cases, like Iraq, fail the test. Transnational intervention by states and international institutions has increased since the globalization wave of the of the 1990's and especially since 9/11. This book, by focusing on a diverse array of cases, establishes a clear framework for judging the legitimacy of such actions.

Leadership by Proxy - The Story of Women in Corporate India (Hardcover): Poonam Barua Leadership by Proxy - The Story of Women in Corporate India (Hardcover)
Poonam Barua
R934 Discovery Miles 9 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Leadership by Proxy" by Poonam Barua is a pioneering book that lays an archival milestone for creating a "brave new mindset" in corporate India and businesses worldwide -- that will genuinely embrace "balanced leadership" as a true goal of corporate enterprise, validate and verify equal opportunity with meritocracy, respect inclusive growth for women who form 50% of the world population, and best practices in the workplace that will reject homogenous all-male corporate leadership as a fundamental economic function - to bring optimum rewards of diversity to business growth and societal progress. The book is a steady and seminal personal narrative - with compelling corporate anecdotes and case studies - that provide a multi-faceted kaleidascope of how the women of corporate India have been progressively finding their voices in an unequal corporate world, collectively redefining gender-sensitive leadership, and aspiring for board positions - in hallways that have kept the women out of decision-making for over 100 years. The book is recommended reading for all business leaders, professionals, academics, acitivists, ngo's, women and men- who are looking for insights, perspectives, and roadmaps to build a vibrant common future - where differences are respected, and conservative leadership paradigms are re-defined by real-time changing, dynamic and vibrant stakeholders. Colonial New England was awash in ales, beers, wines, cider and spirits. Everyone from teenage farmworkers to our founding fathers imbibed heartily and often. Tipples at breakfast, lunch, teatime and dinner were the norm, and low-alcohol hard cider was sometimes even a part of children's lives. This burgeoning cocktail culture reflected the New World's abundance of raw materials: apples, sugar and molasses, wild berries and hops. This plentiful drinking sustained a slew of smoky taverns and inns--watering holes that became vital meeting places and the nexuses of unrest as the Revolution brewed. New England food and drinks writer Corin Hirsch explores the origins and taste of the favorite potations of early Americans and offers some modern-day recipes to revive them today.

Future Purpose - A Five-Dimensional Framework For Building Your C-Suite Career (Paperback): Chris van Melle Kamp Future Purpose - A Five-Dimensional Framework For Building Your C-Suite Career (Paperback)

Future Purpose introduces a five-dimensional model designed to help mid to senior-level executives make better career decisions by helping them gain a deeper understanding of the major influences that drive these decisions. It presents a professional analysis of career change and growth that will inspire executives to take a deeply holistic view of themselves and their executive career development.

The Author’s “Five Dimensions of Influence” model, on which the book is based, provides a framework that holds together the challenges of managing our careers in an ever more complex and shifting world. This more holistic view of the individual executive’s career choices and career transitions sets this book apart from any other in this genre and takes the reader into a unique and deeply researched journey of discovery that presents the new world of work as a massive opportunity for new leaders to develop and participate in what van Melle Kamp refers to as the early stages of the “second renaissance”. Unlike many books that address leadership and change from an organisational perspective, this book provides individual executives with deep insights into how they can take charge of their own careers on a journey to the C-Suite in pursuit of purpose and meaningfulness.

Future Purpose is written in a narrative style in which the author “talks” to the reader, building a bond of under-standing as the model unfolds across the chapters. The style is supportive of the reader, helpful and deeply engaging as he takes us through his thinking and the complex scope of our career journeys. The book is peppered with stories and examples of individuals’ experiences in building their executive careers and how they managed through huge transitions on their “route to the top.” He weaves through the book valuable golden threads of knowledge and deep experience that reflect a combination of future-focused strategic insights, practical application and inspirational anecdotes.

Broad in its scope but deep in its application, the Five Dimensions of Influence model is a powerful road map for every senior executive on a journey to the C-Suite and in search of Future Purpose.

Access Points - An Institutional Theory of Policy Bias and Policy Complexity (Hardcover): Sean D Ehrlich Access Points - An Institutional Theory of Policy Bias and Policy Complexity (Hardcover)
Sean D Ehrlich
R1,963 Discovery Miles 19 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Access Points develops a new theory about how democratic institutions influence policy outcomes. Access Point Theory argues that the more points of access that institutions provide to interest groups, the cheaper lobbying will be, and, thus, the more lobbying will occur. This will lead to more complex policy, as policymakers insert specific provisions to benefit special interests, and, if one side of the debate has a lobbying advantage, to more biased policy, as the advantaged side is able to better take advantage of the cheaper lobbying. This book then uses Access Point Theory to explain why some countries have more protectionist and more complex trade policies than other; why some countries have stronger environmental and banking regulations than others; and why some countries have more complicated tax codes than others. In policy area after policy area, this book finds that more access points lead to more biased and more complex policy. Access Points provides scholars with a powerful tool to explain how political institutions matter and why countries implement the policies they do.

Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions and New Energy is a summary of selected experimental and theoretical research performed over the last 19 years that gives profound and unambiguous evidence for low energy nuclear reaction (LENR), historically known as cold fusion.
In 1989, the subject was announced with great fanfare, to the chagrin of many people in the science community. However, the significant claim of its discoverers, Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons, excess heat without harmful neutron emissions or strong gamma radiation, involving electrochemical cells using heavy water and palladium, has held strong.
In recent years, LENR, within the field of condensed matter nuclear science, has begun to attract widespread attention and is regarded as a potential alternative and renewable energy source to confront climate change and energy scarcity. The aim of the research is to collect experimental findings for LENR in order to present reasonable explanations and a conclusive theoretical and practical working model.
The goal of the field is directed toward the fabrication of LENR devices with unique commercial potential demonstrating an alternative energy source that does not produce greenhouse gases, long-lived radiation or strong prompt radiation. The idea of LENR has led to endless discussions about the kinetic impossibility of intense nuclear reactions with high coulomb barrier potential. However, recent theoretical work may soon shed light on this mystery.
Understanding this process is one of the most challenging and perhaps important issues in the scientific world. This book includes previously unpublished studies, new and controversial theories to approach LENR with access to new sources and experimental results. The book offers insight into this controversial subject and will help readers re-evaluate their perspective on LENR as a possible alternative energy source.
