Youth in Superdiverse Societies - Growing up with globalization, diversity, and acculturation (Paperback): Peter F. Titzmann,... Youth in Superdiverse Societies - Growing up with globalization, diversity, and acculturation (Paperback)
Peter F. Titzmann, Philipp Jugert
R1,175 Discovery Miles 11 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Youth in Superdiverse Societies brings together theoretical, methodological and international approaches to the study of globalization, diversity, and acculturation in adolescence. It examines vital issues including migration, integration, cultural identities, ethnic minorities, and the interplay of ethnic and cultural diversity with experiences of growing up as an adolescent. This important volume focuses on understanding the experiences and consequences of multicultural societies and offers valuable new insights in the field of intergroup relations and the complexity of growingly heterogeneous societies. The book comprises four sections. The first includes fresh theoretical perspectives for studying youth development in multicultural societies, exploring topics such as superdiversity, globalization, bicultural identity development, polyculturalism, the interplay of acculturation and development, as well as developmental-ecological approaches. The second section highlights innovative methods in studying multicultural societies. It contains innovative dynamic concepts (e.g., experience-based sampling), methods for studying the nested structure of acculturative contexts, and suggestions for cross-comparative research to differentiate universal and context-specific processes. The third section examines social relations and social networks in diverse societies and features developmentally crucial contexts (e.g., family, peers, schools) and contributions on interethnic interactions in real-life contexts. The final section presents applications in natural settings and includes contributions on participatory action research and teachers dealings' with ethnic diversity. Each chapter provides a thorough overview of current research trends and findings, followed by detailed recommendations for future research, suggesting how the approaches can be cited, applied and improved. Youth in Superdiverse Societies is valuable reading for students studying adolescent acculturation and development in psychology, sociology, education, anthropology, linguistics and political science. It will also be of interest to scholars and researchers in social and developmental psychology, and related disciplines, as well as professionals in the field of migration.

regressions in Mental Development - Basic Phenomena and Theories (Paperback): Thomas G. Bever regressions in Mental Development - Basic Phenomena and Theories (Paperback)
Thomas G. Bever
R1,246 Discovery Miles 12 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Science depends on noticing that things which seem identical are different, and conversely. In psychology, one cannot assume that apparently identical behaviours are due to identical mechanisms. The work reported in this book involves the problem of classifying the true nature of behaviour as it appears during child development. Originally published in 1982, the papers in this volume attempt to interpret, explain, or explain away developmental regressions in a variety of different areas. In spring 1975, a group of scholars interested in such problems met for several days to discuss their individual findings and the underlying theoretical issues. This volume reflects both the discussions at the original conference and succeeding years of thinking, reading and writing.

Marjorie Lindne Gunnoe
R790 R638 Discovery Miles 6 380 Save R152 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Integral to a Christian worldview and to psychology are foundational questions about personhood: What characteristics are essential? What is our purpose? Do we naturally incline toward good or bad? Are we accountable for self and responsible for others? In The Person in Psychology and Christianity, developmental psychologist Marjorie Gunnoe demonstrates how the integration of theological and psychological perspectives offers a more comprehensive understanding of personhood than either approach alone. Gunnoe opens with a brief summary of biblical and theological perspectives on four organizing themes (human essence, purpose, moral tendency, and accountability). She then examines the intersection of this faith-based depiction with five theories of social development proposed by Erik Erikson John Bowlby B. F. Skinner Albert Bandura Evolutionary Psychology For each, Gunnoe includes a biography, a summary of the theorist's broad perspective on personhood, and an analysis of the theorist's stance on the four specific themes. This book is written for a general audience and suitable for undergraduate and graduate instruction. Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) Books explore how Christianity relates to mental health and behavioral sciences including psychology, counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy in order to equip Christian clinicians to support the well-being of their clients.

Moving Out, Moving On - Young People's Pathways In and Through Homelessness (Paperback): Shelley Mallett, Doreen... Moving Out, Moving On - Young People's Pathways In and Through Homelessness (Paperback)
Shelley Mallett, Doreen Rosenthal, Deb Keys, Roger Averill
R1,675 Discovery Miles 16 750 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Based on rich interview data drawn from a large scale longitudinal study of homeless young people, this book examines the personal, familial and structural factors that impact on homeless young people s long-term outcomes. While telling the personal stories of young people s experiences, the book refers to the wider research and policy literature on youth homelessness, engaging with key debates about the causes and meanings of homelessness in western societies. The book addresses important issues such as employment and education, engagement with services, social support, connection to family and friends, as well as personal factors including physical and mental health, sexual practices and drug use.

Homeless young people are typically portrayed as leading chaotic, risky lives, trapped in a downward spiral of drug use, mental and other health problems, and long-term homelessness. By giving voice to young homeless people, this book challenges this stereotype and demonstrates young people's capacity to move out of homelessness and make satisfactory lives for themselves.

Research findings are positioned in the context of a broad, international literature on youth homelessness and is important reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of psychology, sociology, youth and social work as well as researchers, policy makers and service providers in all western cultures.

Children's Saving - A Study in the Development of Economic Behaviour (Paperback): Edmund J.S.Sonuga- Barke, Paul Webley Children's Saving - A Study in the Development of Economic Behaviour (Paperback)
Edmund J.S.Sonuga- Barke, Paul Webley
R525 Discovery Miles 5 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1993, this book presents an alternative approach to the study of the emergence of economic awareness during childhood: a new developmental economic psychology! In the past, attempts to study the emergence of children's economic consciousness have failed to take account of the practical nature of the "economic" in the history of western cultures. Economic socialisation has been seen as the acquisition of abstract knowledge about the institutions of adult economic culture. The child has been seen as a spectator, acquiring knowledge of that culture, but never really a part of it. However, economic actions, in essence, are directed not towards the attainment of knowledge, but rather towards the practical solution of problems of resource allocation imposed by constraint. Children, just like adults, are faced with practical problems of resource allocation. Their response to these problems may be different from those of adults but no less "economic" for that. This realisation forms the heart of this book. In it children are seen as both inhabitants of their own "playground" economic subculture and actors in the wider economic world of adults, solving, or attempting to solve, practical economic problems. In order to highlight this "child-centred" approach, the authors studied the way children tackle the particular problems posed by limitations of income. How do children learn (a) the relationship between choices available in the present and the future, (b) to spread their limited financial resources over time into the future and (c) about the strategies, such as banking, that allow them to protect those resources from threats and temptations? In short, how do children learn to save? This volume goes some way to answering these and related questions and in so doing sets up an alternative framework for the study of the emergence of economic awareness.

Research Issues in Child Development (Paperback): Chris Pratt, Alison F. Garton, William E Tunmer, Andrew R. Nesdale Research Issues in Child Development (Paperback)
Chris Pratt, Alison F. Garton, William E Tunmer, Andrew R. Nesdale
R754 Discovery Miles 7 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1986, this authoritative book contains a selection of original, research based, reports of studies conducted in Australia and New Zealand in the field of Child Development. The topics have been arranged into four major sections - cognitive issues in development, language and reading development, perpetual motor development and social aspects of development. Both pure and applied research issues are presented, and the chapters cover child development from infancy to adolescence. The book's special strength lies in the diversity of topics tackled and the range of developmental research represented. Theoretical viewpoints are raised and empirical questions answered in the studies reported. The editors have systematically drawn together important contributions which reflected contemporary topics in child development at the time. Although no one common theoretical or empirical theme unites either each section or the whole book (which reflects the general scope and diversity of child development in the 1980s), the contributors in general see the child as developing through active interaction with his or her environment. This interactionist position is clearly preferred by most researchers, who realised that simplistic genetic or environmental models are inadequate to explain the complex development of the child. The editors were all active researchers in the area of child development at the time and each co-authored a chapter in the book. All published regularly in national and international journals and books, and were aware of current developments in their main areas of expertise. All those interested in issues in child development will find this book important reading, as it provides the reader with an excellent and diverse selection of studies, bearing on a wide range of empirical research.

In Celebration of Play - An Integrated Approach to Play and Child Development (Paperback): Paul F Wilkinson In Celebration of Play - An Integrated Approach to Play and Child Development (Paperback)
Paul F Wilkinson
R1,095 Discovery Miles 10 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Play is the child's way of learning about, adapting to and integrating with his or her environment. In addition to adequate sports and recreation facilities children need a wide variety of opportunities, choices and raw materials that they can use as they see fit for free constructive creative play. Originally published in 1980, these essays, drawn from papers given at the International Playgrounds Association's Seventh World Congress, focus on the social significance of play. However, both the Association and the book itself are not solely concerned with 'playgrounds' in the formal sense; rather, they are concerned with the wide range of play environments that are - or should be - available to children. It is recognised that play opportunities can exist for the child in and around the home (playrooms, backyards), the school and public park (traditional, adventure and creative playgrounds), the institution (day-care centres, hospitals), and the city qua city (the streets and shopping centres). This work is concerned with all these environments, considering the developmental aspects of play in a social context. The varied contributions from researchers and play leaders from several countries, consider such topics as the importance of play, development through play, leadership training and special groups.

Childhood Traumas - Narratives and Representations (Hardcover): Kamayani Kumar, Angelie Multani Childhood Traumas - Narratives and Representations (Hardcover)
Kamayani Kumar, Angelie Multani
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume contributes to understanding childhoods in the twentieth and twenty-firstcentury by offering an in-depth overview of children and their engagement with the violent world around them. The chapters deal with different historical, spatial, and cultural contexts, yet converge on the question of how children relate to physiological and psychological violence. The twentieth century has been hailed as the "century of the child" but it has also witnessed an unprecedented escalation of cultural trauma experienced by children during the two World Wars, Holocaust, Partition of the Indian subcontinent, and Vietnam War. The essays in this volume focus on victimized childhood during instances of war, ethnic violence, migration under compulsion, rape, and provide insights into how a child negotiates with abstract notions of nation, ethnicity, belonging, identity, and religion. They use an array of literary and cinematic representations-fiction, paintings, films, and popular culture-to explore the long-term effect of violence and neglect on children. As such, they lend voice to children whose experiences of abuse have been multifaceted, ranging from genocide, conflict and xenophobia to sexual abuse, and also consider ways of healing. With contributions from across the world, this comprehensive book will be useful to scholars and researchers of cultural studies, literature, education, education policy, gender studies, child psychology, sociology, political studies, childhood studies, and those studying trauma, conflict, and resilience.

Eleanor Drago-Severson, Jessica Blum-DeStefano
R1,761 Discovery Miles 17 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Tell Me So I Can Hear You, Eleanor Drago-Severson and Jessica Blum-DeStefano show how education leaders can learn to deliver feedback in a way that strengthens relationships as well as performance and builds the capacity for growth. Drawing on constructive-developmental theory, the authors describe four stages of adult growth and development and explain how to differentiate feedback for colleagues with different "ways of knowing," which include: Instrumental knowers, who tend to see things in black and white ("Did I do it right or wrong?") and may need to develop the capacity for reflection. Socializing knowers, who are concerned with maintaining relationships ("What do you want me to do?") and may need support developing their own ideas. Self-authoring knowers, who have strong ideologies and values ("How does this fit with my goals and vision?") and may need help with perspective taking. Self-transformative knowers, who are able to examine issues from multiple points of view ("How can I understand this more deeply?") and may need guidance in resolving tensions and contradictions. The authors show how leaders can provide feedback in ways that "meet people where they are" while expanding the developmental capacities educators bring to their work. Drago-Severson and Blum-DeStefano provide real-life examples with practical strategies for creating a safe space for feedback, finding the right words, and bridging feedback and action. Tell Me So I Can Hear You offers invaluable guidance to help educators support a culture of learning in classrooms, schools, and districts.

Understanding the Effects of Child Sexual Abuse - Feminist Revolutions in Theory, Research and Practice (Paperback): Sam Warner Understanding the Effects of Child Sexual Abuse - Feminist Revolutions in Theory, Research and Practice (Paperback)
Sam Warner; Series edited by Jane Ussher
R1,212 Discovery Miles 12 120 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Child sexual abuse is a global problem that negatively affects many women and girls. As such, it has long been of concern to feminists, and more recently mental health activists. Women and Child Sexual Abuse draws on this revolutionary legacy to re-evaluate mainstream and feminist approaches to understanding women and child sexual abuse. The book aims to contribute to the ongoing development of a knowledge-base for working with abused women and girls.

Women and Child Sexual Abuse draws on feminism and post-structuralism to critically examine current perceptions of women, girls and child sexual abuse in psychology, psychiatry and the mass media. The book demonstrates the need to question the use of formulaic methods in working with abused women and girls, and calls for an explicit concern with politics, principles and ethics in the related areas of theory, research and practice.

Using research into women who have been sexually abused in childhood, andwho are detained in maximum security mental health care, Sam Warner explores and identifies key principles for practice. A social recovery model of intervention is developed, and case study examples are used to demonstrate its applicability in a range of practice areas. These include abuse psychotherapy; expert witness reports in child protection; with mothers of abused girls; and with women and girls in secure care contexts.

This thorough investigation of this emotive issue provides a clear theoretical and practical framework for understanding and coping with child sexual abuse. This book will be of interest to anyone who works with children and adults who have been sexually abused. This includes clinical psychologists, therapistsand other professionals that work in mental health, psychotherapy and social services; and legal settings within both community and secure care contexts. It should also be essential reading for students and academics in this area.

Joanne Zucchetto, Simone Jacobs, Ly Vick Johnson
R3,540 Discovery Miles 35 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Understanding the Paradox of Surviving Childhood Trauma offers clinicians a new framework for understanding the symptoms and coping mechanisms displayed by survivors of childhood abuse. This approach considers how characteristics such as suicidality, self-harm, persistent depression, and anxiety can have roots in behaviors and beliefs that helped patients survive their trauma. This book provides practitioners with case examples, practical tips, and techniques for applying this mindset directly to their most complex cases. By depathologizing patients' experiences and behaviors, and moving beyond simply managing them, therapists can reduce their clients' shame and work collaboratively to understand the underlying message that these behaviors conceal.

The Twin Enigma - An Exploration of Our Enduring Fascination with Twins (Hardcover): Vivienne Lewin The Twin Enigma - An Exploration of Our Enduring Fascination with Twins (Hardcover)
Vivienne Lewin
R3,991 Discovery Miles 39 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book offers a unique in-depth understanding of the twin relationship, and the way in which twin development is affected by our attitudes to twins and our enduring fascination with them. It explores our historical fascination with this subject and the origins of this excitement, how our perceptions of twins reflect our own longing for a perfect soul-mate, and the effect this personal projection has on the development in twins. It is a book written with the general reader in mind rather than "experts". Twins share a deep psychic bond that forms the core of their twinship, but they are never identical. Many factors will affect their development, including the early mutual resonances and sensate experiences between them, and parental and societal attitudes in raising them.
