This volume considers two authors who represent different but complementary responses to social injustice and human degradation. The writings of Walter Rauschenbusch and Dorothy Day respond to an American situation that arose out of the industrial revolution and reflect especially-but not exclusively-urban life in the east coast of the United States during the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. Although these two authors differ greatly, they both reacted to the extreme social inequality and strife that occurred between 1890 and the beginning of World War II. They shared a total commitment to the cause of social justice, their Christian faith, and an active engagement in the quest for a just social order. But the different ways they reacted to the situation generated different spiritualities. Rauschenbusch was a pastor, writer, historian, and seminary professor. Day was a journalist who became an organizer. The strategic differences between them, however, grew out of a common sustained reaction against the massive deprivation that surrounded them. There is no spiritual rivalry here. They complement each other and reinforce the Christian humanitarian motivation that drives them. Their work brings the social dimension of Christian spirituality to the surface in a way that had not been emphasized in the same focused way before them. They are part of an awakening to the degree to which the social order lies in the hands of the people who support it. Both Rauschenbusch and Day are examples of an explicit recognition of the social dimension of Christian spirituality, and a radical acting out of that response in two distinctly different ways.

Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor (Paperback): Leonardo Boff Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor (Paperback)
Leonardo Boff; Translated by Phillip Berryman

"Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor" represents Leonardo Boff's most systematic effort to date to link the spirit of liberation theology with the urgent challenge of ecology. Focusing on the threatened Amazon of his native Brazil, Boff traces the ties that bind the fate of the rain forests with the fate of the Indians and the poor of the land. In this book, readers will find the keys to a new, liberating faith.

Outreach 2018 Recommended Resource of the Year (Leadership) A Top Ten Book for Parish Ministry in 2017, Academy of Parish Clergy The practice of ministry requires pastors and Christian leaders to serve as moral theologians in their communities. Ministers must preach about morally challenging texts, teach about moral issues and conflicts, offer moral counsel, and serve as an example regarding the shape of faithful Christian life. Grounding pastoral ethics in spiritual formation and spiritual disciplines, this book provides tools for facing the day-to-day demands and seizing the opportunities of being a moral teacher. An essential text for practical ministry courses.

The last 10 years have seen an upturn in the number of people reporting difficulties with emotional and mental health issues, particularly anxiety and depression. And, it is often the strongest who struggle under the weight of all they have nobly tried to shoulder. Turn to the Bible, and this truth is played out in the lives of some of its greatest characters. King David led a nation - yet wrote some of the Bible's bleakest laments. Elijah worked outlandish public miracles - and later pleaded God to take his life. Dedicated, hardworking mother and woman of God Naomi acknowledged that she had become characterised by bitterness. And lifelong God follower Job found himself longing for a death that would not come. This book affirms that depressive illness can strike anyone - not least the capable, busy people with the `can-do' attitude of the title. This special bespoke edition for the Christian market takes a destigmatising, thoroughly informed approach to depression, with a foreword by Will Van Der Hart, whose own experience of ill mental health led to him founding Mind & Soul, the leading Christian mental health organisation.

Joshua and the Rhetoric of Violence - A New Historicist Analysis (Hardcover): Lori L. Rowlett Joshua and the Rhetoric of Violence - A New Historicist Analysis (Hardcover)
Lori L. Rowlett
R6,322 Discovery Miles 63 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Joshua and the Rhetoric of Violence' examines the book of Joshua as a construction of national identity. This pioneering New Historicist analysis shows how the Deuteronomist used war oracle language and epic historical lore to negotiate sociopolitical boundaries. It asserts that text and context interacted in a programme consolidating King Josiah's authority in the wake of Assyrian imperial collapse. The book argues that the conquest narrative is not simple 'us against them' propaganda but a complex web of negotiations defining identity and otherness. The analysis draws on Foucault's principle that power is something exercised rather than merely possessed.

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Turn to Jesus when your trials and tribulations seem to wear you down. Turn to Jesus when you feel all hope is gone. Turn to Jesus when you need someone who will never leave nor forsake you. Jesus is your very present help in all you go through in this life.

In "God is Not Looking for a Part-Time Lover but a Committed People," author Belinda Nored encourages all who are looking for strength, comfort, and spiritual guidance to turn to Jesus. Nored, who committed her life to the Lord more than twenty years ago, uses a wide range of Scriptures to show how a renewal of your commitment to the Lord will allow him to restore what is broken and discusses what God expects of you to gain eternal life. She teaches how to let go and let God handle it all.

"God is Not Looking for a Part-Time Lover but a Committed People" invites Christians to explore life to the fullest of their imaginations and to try Jesus. He is the answer.

Test of Faith (Book) (Paperback): Ruth Bancewicz, Faraday Institute For Science And Religion Test of Faith (Book) (Paperback)
Ruth Bancewicz, Faraday Institute For Science And Religion
R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is God a delusion? Are science and Christian faith incompatible? Ten scientists tell their stories. There is a popular myth at large in both modern society and in many churches. According to this myth science and Christianity have been engaged in a long battle over the centuries. For many secularists this means that we must embrace science and reject religion, whilst for some Christians it means the exact opposite. But are science and Christian faith really in a conflict? In this book ten respected scientists share their life stories and their reflections on science and faith. What led them to become scientists? Why did they embrace Christianity? And how do they relate their religious beliefs to the science that they do in the lab? The stories that they tell help us to see that when it comes to answering some of 'life's big questions' we do well to listen for the insights from both science and faith. Contributors include: Dr Francis Collins, Professor Alister McGrath, Dr Ard Louis, Dr Jennifer Wiseman, Professor Bill Newsome, Rev Dr John Polkinghorn, Rev Dr Alasdair Coles, Dr Deborah B. Haarsma, Professor Rosalind Picard, Professor John Bryant. 'The level of human insight matching scientific expertise in these chapters is high, and they have left me feeling that here are folk with whom, as a mere theologian, I would love to spend some time. I hope other readers will enjoy this set of testimonies as much as I have done.' - Professor J. I. Packer, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada 'Just the book to give to anyone who thinks science disproves religion. Powerful testimonies from ten distinguished scientists reveal why their faith in God enhances their research. A very worthwhile read!' - Professor Gordon Wenham, Trinity College, Bristol, UK 'These short, readable accounts by ten scientists are a pleasure to read and an inspiration to anyone who seeks to integrate Christian belief and science. Each one is a specialist in a different scientific discipline, and they tell very different life stories, yet they all affirm the Christian privilege of scientific discovery and understanding.' - Professor Keith Fox, School of Biological Sciences, University of Southampton, and Chair of Christians in Science 'Brilliantly demonstrates that science and Christianity are not enemies but perfectly compatible.' - Dr Krish Kandiah, Evangelical Alliance
