The landscape of North America is filled with small established
churches that struggle to move forward. With God's help, some of
those established churches are experiencing renewed life and
growth. SHIFT tells the stories of nine churches that broke free
from previous patterns of plateau and decline in order to
experience vibrant renewal. These churches encountered common
movements - or shifts - which were vital in the renewal process.
Written as a resource for pastors and lay leadership teams, SHIFT
provides practical information, powerful stories, and insightful
questions to help your church SHIFT forward.
...the compelling and poignant account of one woman's experience as
a chaplain on the edge of war. When Dr. Rachel Coggins received the
call to serve overseas, the Army Reservist left a comfortable
Georgia home to live in a harsh environment filled with challenge.
Assigned to a base called the Gateway, she welcomed military
members entering the war zones of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait and
then bid them goodbye when it was time to return stateside. In
between those times, Chaplain Coggins listened to the warriors-to
their fears, their worries, their heartaches, and sometimes, their
joys. She became a confidante to some, a comfort to others, and a
friend to still others. Chaplain Coggins offers a glimpse into a
world few civilians ever see. In retelling her experiences, Coggins
reveals the struggles that confront today's war-zone Soldiers and
their loved ones, struggles that are often hidden from most
Americans. What readers are saying: "What a great book I couldn't
put it down. I laughed, cried, imagined, thought, reflected, prayed
all at the same time" -Kathy Oldfield, seminarian "You bring the
war home and make it a personal journey, rather than some far away
experience in a country most of us don't even know." -Carol Glover,
Chaplain's wife "Compassionate, compelling and heart-felt ...rare
insight and much needed perspective." - Angela Marshall, Teacher
Rachel is an Army Reserve Chaplain and the wife of an Air Force
Chaplain. She holds a Doctorate of Ministry in Women's Studies and
is founder of Rachel's Well Ministry. She and her husband, Michael,
and son live in Arizona.

Leading others in worship is a rewarding ministry, but it can also
be a difficult ministry. Sometimes, the tension of worship styles,
tones, and skills overcomes the meaning and message behind worship
and communion with God. When a church is in the middle of this
tension, it is often a struggle to find the balance between who and
what God called us to be and the constantly changing demands of
worship ministry.
Worship Where You're Planted seeks to recognize and respond to
the situations that worship leaders encounter. Through exploration
and insight, author Dave Clark tackles issues such as transitioning
between worship leaders, navigating between traditional and
contemporary music styles, and building rapport with the
congregation. With wisdom and understanding, Clark helps small and
midsize churches find comfort and connection as they lead their
congregations in worship.
What lies ahead and what is in store for our nation in the coming
years and the year 2012? In this first volume of the "Speak to the
Nations" series, author Lynn B. Goebel reveals specific detailed
accounts of future events for our nation and the entire world
through divine prophetic inspiration. You will find a penitent
message, which summons an appeal for our church leaders and the
people of this generation to take a stand against immoral conduct,
by upholding the true sanction of righteousness for God's laws and
principles. God has commissioned a mandate for the author to
prophetically predict the uncertainties of our nation's future. She
sends a resounding message of repentance to a Body of believers and
to the world. This literature parallels written Biblical
prophesies, which unlock key elements in exposing divisible evils
in the church and in the world, in an effort to restore this nation
back to a state of order. Author and Speaker Lynn B. Goebel is a
licensed, ordained minister who has worked in ministry for over
twenty years, speaking at conferences and events. She also served
as co-pastor of The Lighthouse Worship Center for six years, where
her husband Briton was Senior Pastor. She has written several
articles for Christian Business Today Magazine and an
autobiography, which was released in 2006. In her spare time she
loves to travel, spend time with family and discover new revelation
through God's written and spoken Word.
Practical theology has outgrown its traditional pastoral paradigm.
The articles in this handbook recognize that faith, spirituality,
and lived religion, within and beyond institutional communities,
refer to realms of cultures, ritual practices, and symbolic orders,
whose boundaries are not clearly defined and whose contents are
shifting. The International Handbook of Practical Theology offers
insightful transcultural conceptions of religion and religious
matters gathered from various cultures and traditions of faith. The
first section presents 'concepts of religion'. Chapters have to do
with considerations of the conceptualizing of religion in the
fields of 'anthropology', 'community', 'family', 'institution',
'law', 'media', and 'politics' among others. The second section is
dedicated to case studies of 'religious practices' from the
perspective of their actors. The third section presents major
theoretical discourses that explore the globally significant
diversity and multiplicity of religion. Altogether, sixty-one
authors from different parts of the world encourage a rethinking of
religious practice in an expanded, transcultural, globalized, and
postcolonial world.
This book's central claim is that a close reading of Augustine's
epistemology can help political theologians develop affirmative
accounts of political liberalism. This claim is set in a scholarly
context that is profoundly hostile to constructive theological
readings of liberal culture. As a corrective to such antagonism,
this book suggests that, far from being natural opponents,
Christian communities can work fruitfully with political liberals
based on common principles. A key component in this argument is the
theological reevaluation of the ancient skeptical tradition. While
the ancient skeptics are habitually treated by scholars as minor
characters in the story of Augustine's theological development,
this volume argues that they played a significant role in shaping
both Augustine's theology and the subsequent character of the
Augustinian tradition. By placing Augustine's reading of the
skeptics in dialogue with contemporary culture, this book
constructs a viable form of liberal Christian politics that is
attentive both to his sin-sensitive account of public life and his
eschatological vision of the church.
