Between 1917 and 1962, Pablo Picasso was involved in creating the
designs for nine ballets including 'Parade', 'Pulcinella' and
'L'Apres-midi d'un Faune', in collaboration with such artists as
Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Leonide
Massine and Vaslav Nijinsky. Picasso, a native of Andalusia, also
created the sets and costumes for the very Spanish ballet, 'Le
Tricorne' ('The Three-Cornered Hat'). This release features the
entire ballet along with a documentary which traces the story of
Picasso's involvement with designs for ballet.
Marcelo Álvarez and Carlos Álvarez head the cast in this production
of Verdi's opera recorded at Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu in
2004. Jesus López-Cobos conducts the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus
of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
Diego Fasolis conducts the Concerto Köln ensemble in this
production of Leonardo Vinci's opera, recorded live at the Opéra
National De Lorraine in 2012. Performers include Philippe
Jaroussky, Franco Fagioli and Yuriy Mynenko.
Dutch director Frank Scheffer collaborates with Andrew Culver for a
series of four short films celebrating the theories and music of
avant-garde composer John Cage. In 19 QUESTIONS, Cage answers
questions on a variety of subjects. In FOURTEEN, the Ives Ensemble
performs Cage's composition of the same name, filmed with multiple
cameras using chance operations to determine the position, angle,
focus, and aperture settings of each shot. In PAYING ATTENTION,
Scheffer and Culver combine separate audio and video portions from
an interview with Cage. And in OVERPOPULATION AND ART WITH RYONJI,
Scheffer combines the audio of Cage's spoken performance with his
musical piece for four voices and percussion.
