"The prominence of the Bupleurum species cannot be overstated. Across China and Japan, it serves as a main or supplementary ingredient in over two thirds of traditional medications. Modern research indicates that it may possess anti-tumor qualities, and researchers continue to report its impact on a wide range of ailments, from hepatitis and epilepsy, to irregularity and menopause, as well as psychosis and schizophrenia. Bupleurum Species: Scientific Evaluation and Clinical Applications brings together the work of leading researchers from Asia and Europe who examine this remarkable genus of plants. Providing a comprehensive look at all aspects relevant to the species, this historic volume- q

This title was first published in 2003. In laboratories around the world the active principles in traditional herbal medicines are being isolated and characterized. A systematic effort at the Chinese Academy of Sciences is underway to identify the structure-activity relationships that result from the link between chemistry and medicine that is permitted by this data. This book, which provides the only systematic English-language description of the chemical structures and pharmacological effects of compounds active in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), is now in its second edition. The new edition provides English-language monographs on over 9000 chemicals isolated from nearly 4000 natural sources used in Chinese medicine and features the addition of in-depth bioactivity data for many of the compounds. Effects and indications of the medicines are included. Extensive indexing permits cross-referencing among English, Chinese and Latin names for natural medicinal sources, effects and indications, and the chemical components of the medicines. The second edition of Traditional Chinese Medicines includes 2300 new compounds, 2400 additional plant sources, more CAS Registry Numbers, and more pharmacological data. The structure of the book has been extensively reorganised to make cross referencing the data much simpler. This new edition is therefore a substantial improvement on the first edition of this important reference on the structural chemistry of traditional Chinese medicines.

medical truths. "Your Doctor is Wron"g is a survival guide if you
have been dismissed, misdiagnosed, or your symptoms have just been
treated like the tip of the iceberg with pharmaceutical drugs. Dr.
Norling's book may be seen as controversial because some people
will not like what she has to say. They will find it hard to
believe until they see all of the facts as Dr. Norling presents
them. Her thought provoking evidence challenges our traditional
thinking about 'right and wrong' choices in maintaining a healthy
lifestyle. Everyone will benefit from "Your Doctor is Wrong."
Happiness is one of the most written about topics in the world. It has been a core concern of humans since the beginning of time. However, "Miserably Happy" provides a unique lens in which to view this powerful emotion. While acknowledging the positive dimension of happiness (as most books do), "Miserably Happy" is also focused on the negative consequences. These negative consequences are based on the current academic and popular conceptualization of happiness being related to the experience of pleasure. In recognizing the negative dimension of happiness, "Miserably Happy" explains how the pursuit of happiness often leads to misery. Twelve-step programs are an example of how various pursuits of happiness can have tragic consequence. Alcoholism, drug abuse, over eating, and sex addiction all begin with the pursuit of pleasure and the hope of happiness. "Miserably Happy" ties our experience of genuine happiness to our fidelity to the physical-mental- spiritual properties of the human. The spiritual property of the mind presented in "Miserably Happy" is open to scientific explanation. It is a transcendent property and applies to any and all human conscious activity and defines human genuiness and authenticity. The human mind is an emergent property of our biology and therefore, aligned with our biology, defines our health and wellness. As the authors point out "In living within our created nature we become deeply connected to ourselves, others, our communities, the environment and, indeed, the universe. Our journey to discover the secrets of genuine happiness ends up at its point of departure. The secret to lasting genuine happiness is found in nature." By decisively identifying the structure and norms of human body-mind-spirit, "Miserably Happy" provides an absolute basis for defining healthy human functioning and development and pinpoints the pervasive impact healthy development and functioning have on our ability to experience meaning, purpose, and genuine happiness. Take the challenge, refine your understanding and experience of happiness, become a creative and powerful force of genuine happiness and experience the exciting results your efforts will have on others.

Acupuncture has long been recognised as complementing the practice of physiotherapy. Acupuncture in Physiotherapy is written for physiotherapists who have already received a basic training in acupuncture and who wish to extend their practice and achieve an intermediate standard of knowledge. It links the philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the theory and practice of Western science in a single, clearly written and highly readable text. Acupuncture in Physiotherapy addresses the important issues on appropriate acupuncture research methodologies, particularly that of placebo control, and enables the reader to judge the quality of RCT evidence. It also examines more recent research into the mechanisms of acupuncture. Treatment vignettes are included throughout the text to demonstrate the immediate relevance of the sophisticated and subtle TCM thinking to modern physiotherapy practice. Research papers and texts are cited where they support TCM theory. Val Hopwood is an experienced practitioner and is well known for her acupuncture courses. Her ecumenical approach to the subject avoids an abstract separation of the two strands of acupuncture and in its juxtaposition of science and mythology provides a stimulating and original survey. Full of insights, this book will be required reading not only for physiotherapists but any health professional who uses acupuncture in their practice.
This set of six volumes provides a systematic and standardized description of 23,033 chemical components isolated from 6,734 medicinal plants, collected from 5,507 books/articles published in Chinese and international journals. Furthermore, abundant pharmacological data for nearly 8,000 chemical components are presented, including experimental method, experimental animal, cell type, quantitative data, as well as control compound data. The seven indexes allow for complete cross-indexing. Regardless whether one searches for the molecular formula of a compound, the pharmacological activity of a compound, or the English name of a plant, the information in the book can be retrieved in multiple ways.
This is a medical text book aimed at all health care professionals who care for patients with back pain. It is a book for health professionals about the understanding and management of back pain. It has become established as one of the leading examples of a biopsychosocial approach to medicine. It sets out to challenge unsubstantiated beliefs regarding the best way to treat and manage back pain and to create an interdisciplinary debate on the subject. Patients and society are demanding more effective approaches to this huge problem. This requires a radical rethink among professionals about their individual contributions to the problem. This book is about the revolution that is taking place in this area. Gordon Waddell is the world authority on the topic of the back pain revolution. The content addresses huge problems of concern to many disciplines and governments. The unbiased, open-minded view looks at the issues and the evidence and invites the readers to consider, debate, and agree on the best course of action. Comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the problem offers both interventionist and conservative approaches to treatment, psychosocial issues, economic factors, patient education, and prevention. A new chapter on Occupational Health Guidelines keeps the reader up-to-date. New information allows the book to expand on the insights of the previous edition, which was considered a classic text. More social and work-related research and material provides information on these important issues. Updated guidelines and references make this resource one of the best for current practice. The new illustrations, graphs, tables, and education handouts present Waddell's theory in a fresh, new way that aids in the reader's understanding.

From homeopathy to Navajo healing, this volume explores a variety of alternative therapies and political movements that have set the terms of debate over North American healing methods.

Arguably the oldest form of health care, Ayurveda is often referred to as the "Mother of All Healing." Although there has been considerable scientific research done in this area during the last 50 years, the results of that research have not been adequately disseminated. Meeting the need for an authoritative, evidence-based reference, Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies is the first book to analyze and synthesize current research supporting Ayurvedic medicine. |
