Rethinking Schubert (Hardcover): Lorraine Byrne Bodley, Julian Horton Rethinking Schubert (Hardcover)
Lorraine Byrne Bodley, Julian Horton
R2,757 Discovery Miles 27 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Rethinking Schubert, today's leading Schubertians offer fresh perspectives on the composer's importance and our perennial fascination with him. Subjecting recurring issues in historical, biographical and analytical research to renewed scrutiny, the twenty-two chapters yield new insights into Schubert, his music, his influence and his legacy, and broaden the interpretative context for the music of his final years. With close attention to matters of style, harmonic and formal analysis, and text setting, the essays gathered here explore a significant portion of the composer's extensive output across a range of genres. The most readily explicable aspect of Schubert's appeal is undoubtedly our continuing engagement with the songs. Schubert will always be the first port of call for scholars interested in the relationship between music and the poetic text, and several essays in Rethinking Schubert offer welcome new inquiries into this subject. Yet perhaps the most striking feature of modern scholarship is the new depth of thought that attaches to the instrumental works. This music's highly protracted dissemination has combined with a habitual critical hostility to produce a reception history that is hardly congenial to musical analysis. Empowered by the new momentum behind theories of nineteenth-century harmony and form and recently-published source materials, the sophisticated approaches to the instrumental music in Rethinking Schubert show decisively that it is no longer acceptable to posit Schubert's instrumental forms as flawed lyric alternatives to Beethoven. What this volume provides, then, is not only a fresh portrait of one of the most loved composers of the nineteenth century but also a conspectus of current Schubertian research. Whether perusing unknown repertoire or refreshing canonical works, Rethinking Schubert reveals the extraordinary methodological variety that is now available to research, painting a contemporary portrait of Schubert that is vibrant, plural, trans-national and complex.

Since 1963 Eric Clapton has contributed to two hundred albums by other artists: from very famous to the obscure and the unexpected: Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Sting, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart, all four of the Beatles, Martha Velez, Jonathan Kelly, Corey Hart, Stephen Bishop, Hawkwind, Ray Charles, Kate Bush, The Tony Rich Project, Toots and the Maytals and Mary J. Blige. If you've never heard (for instance) 'Beat of the Night' by Bob Geldof, 'Sexual Revolution' by Roger Waters or 'I Wish It Would Rain Down' by Phil Collins, this book tells you about Eric's part in those recordings and many more, as well as his more notorious collaborations with the likes of The Beatles, Bob Dylan - and Ed Sheeran! Indeed, this book puts these into context across nearly sixty years of documented sessions. If you've never delved into Eric's contributions to other artist's recordings, then this is a handy guide to help the reader find his way into such a lengthy and successful second career. If his own albums are the main story, then these recordings run alongside: an alternative history of one of rock's most prolific musicians

Stewart R. Craggs
R1,898 Discovery Miles 18 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Internationally known Welsh composer Alun Hoddinott has played a major role in the promotion of contemporary music in his country through his own prolific compositions--operas; orchestral, chamber, band, and solo instrumental pieces; choral music; songs; and incidental music--and as a professor of music at Cardiff University and artistic director of the Cardiff Festival of Twentieth-Century Music. This bio-bibliography includes a catalog of his works, classified by genre, which documents 278 compositions (plus numerous derived pieces) composed from 1946 to 1991, indicating commissioning, dedication, instrumentation, duration, manuscript information, publication, recordings, and premieres and selected performances.

The works catalog is cross-referenced to recordings in a discography section and to related items in an annotated bibliography, which includes a large number of reviews and writings by the composer. An introductory biography, appendices listing the musical compositions alphabetically and chronologically, and a general index complete the volume. Prepared with the full cooperation of Hoddinott, this is the first detailed publication on this important composer.

Charlie Parker, Composer (Hardcover): Henry Martin Charlie Parker, Composer (Hardcover)
Henry Martin
R1,193 Discovery Miles 11 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As a founding father of bebop and brilliant jazz improviser, Charlie Parker has secured a reputation and legacy second to none since his birth nearly 100 years ago. Because of his excellence as an improviser, however, his compositions - while admired and still played - have taken a back seat. In this exciting and timely new volume, author Henry Martin rebalances our understanding of Parker by spotlighting his significance as a jazz composer. Beginning with a review of Parker's life and musical training, Charlie Parker, Composer critically analyzes Parker's compositions, situating them within both his individual musicianship and early bebop style. Proposing that Parker composed up to 84 pieces, Martin examines their development and aesthetic qualities, their similarities and dissimilarities within a range of seven types of jazz composition. Also discussed are eight tunes credited to Parker but never performed by him, along with an evaluation of where - if at all - they fit in his oeuvre. Providing the first assessment of a major jazz composer's output in its entirety, Charlie Parker, Composer offers a thorough reexamination, through music-theoretical, historical, and philosophical lenses, of one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time.

Peggy Glanville-Hicks - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Deborah Hayes Peggy Glanville-Hicks - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Deborah Hayes
R1,897 Discovery Miles 18 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This first book-length study to focus on Peggy Glanville-Hicks, the important twentieth-century composer and critic who was born in Australia in 1912 and who established her reputation in the U.S. in the late 1940s and 1950s, documents the composer's music, performances, and critical writings, as well as the work of previous biographers, bibliographers, and interviewers. This volume, the most recent in Greenwood's respected series of research tools in the field of music, contains a comprehensive biography of the composer that draws on the writings and recollections of many of the composer's close friends and colleagues. Deborah Hayes' compilation of the great amount of material about Glanville-Hicks and her music found in journals, books, newspapers, dictionaries, and encyclopedias of music also contains alphabetical, chronological, and by-genre lists of works with details of first performances and other significant performances, a discography, and an annotated bibliography that includes abstracts and quotations from performance reviews. Bibliographic entries are keyed to lists of works, recordings, and performances. The work is indexed as well. The work is divided into six cross-referenced chapters beginning with a biography that gives a chronological account of the composer's life and examines recurring themes in her work. The second chapter lists 70 compositions in chronological order by year of composition, from 1931 to 1989, and includes information on publisher, duration, instrumentation, and commission. Premieres and other selected performances are indicated and references are given to recordings and to bibliographical items. A publishers directory, an alphabetical list of works, and a classified list complete the chapter which is followed by a discography of Glanville-Hicks' commercial recordings, both in and out of print. Chapter four's annotated listing of the composer's writings in chronological order from 1945 to 1989 documents the scope of her interests and provides a record of this period in American musical history in the words of a perceptive, articulate listener and active participant. Alphabetized by author and title, music reviews, performance reviews, feature articles, publicity items, and press announcements are listed with annotations in Chapter five. Items from all previous Glanville-Hicks bibliographies and from library clipping files and indexes are included no matter how brief the reference. A final chapter devoted to archival resources lists materials by library in alphabetical order by country and name. This informative and easy-to-use volume will be a necessary addition to the reference collections of college and university music libraries and would be useful for courses in Twentieth-Century Music, Opera, Art Song, Music of the U.S., American Studies, and Women's Studies.

Music by Pedro de Cristo (c. 1550-1618) (Hardcover, Reissue): Owen Rees Music by Pedro de Cristo (c. 1550-1618) (Hardcover, Reissue)
Owen Rees
R4,513 Discovery Miles 45 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A facsimile of a previously unpublished musical manuscript. Among the major composers of the Portuguese "Golden Age," Pedro de Cristo (c.1550-1618) is at present the least familiar to scholars and performers. This situation is largely due to the fact that his music was not published during his lifetime, but is preserved rather in manuscripts originating (for the most part) at the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, where he spent most of his life. The present work is an edition of the contents on one of these manuscripts -- MM 33 in Coimbra University Library -- which was copied by Pedro de Cristo himself towards the end of the sixteenth-century. It is an invaluable source of authoritative readings of his music: principally Latin motets for four or five voices. Also 198 includes musical examples.

Exploring the personal and cultural experiences that have shaped the creative output of one of Australia's foremost composers, this fascinating study begins in a Russian enclave in northern China, progresses through student days in Sydney and San Francisco, and culminates with Sitsky's present position as Professor of Composition at The Australian National University in Canberra. The many influences on his work, including important professional and personal relationships with such eminent persons as the poet Gwen Harwood and the violinist Jan Sedivka, are discussed in detail as are the sources of much of the inspiration for Sitsky's compositions, now numbering close to 200. Of interest to scholars, students, and anyone interested in 20th-century music. In addition to presenting Sitsky's fascinating life story and expounding on the central position he has occupied for the past 40 years in Australia's musical culture, this important work provides for the first time comprehensive bibliographic references to all of Sitsky's compositions, his writing, his recordings, and his appearances as a pianist and lecturer on music. The book is a most valuable addition to any collection, for it is both a work of reference and a compelling story of the development of one of the most eclectic, visionary, and confronting artists of his generation.

Monarch of the Flute - The Life of Georges Barrere (Hardcover): Nancy Toff Monarch of the Flute - The Life of Georges Barrere (Hardcover)
Nancy Toff
R1,806 Discovery Miles 18 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Georges Barrere (1876-1944) holds a preeminent place in the history of American flute playing. Best known for two of the landmark works that were written for him--the Poem of Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Density 21.5 by Edgard Varese--he was the most prominent early exemplar of the Paris Conservatoire tradition in the United States and set a new standard for American woodwind performance.
Barrere's story is a musical tale of two cities, and this book uses his life as a window onto musical life in Belle Epoque Paris and twentieth-century New York. Recurrent themes are the interactions of composers and performers; the promotion of new music; the management, personnel, and repertoire of symphony orchestras; the economic and social status of the orchestral and solo musician, including the increasing power of musicians' unions; the role of patronage, particularly women patrons; and the growth of chamber music as a professional performance medium.
A student of Paul Taffanel at the Paris Conservatoire, by age eighteen Barrere premiered the landmark Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. He went on to become solo flutist of the Concerts Colonne and to found the Societe Moderne d'Instruments a Vent, a pioneering woodwind ensemble that premiered 61 works for 40 composers in its first ten years. Invited by Walter Damrosch to become principal flute of the New York Symphony in 1905, he founded the woodwind department at the Institute of Musical Art (later Juilliard). His many ensembles toured the United States, building new audiences for chamber music and promoting French repertoire as well as new American music. Toff narrates Barrere's relationships with the finest musicians and artists ofhis day, among them Isadora Duncan, Yvette Guilbert, Andre Caplet, Paul Hindemith, Albert Roussel, Wallingford Riegger, and Henry Brant. The appendices of the book, which list his 170 premieres and the 50 works dedicated to Barrere, are a resource for a new generation of performers.
Based on extensive archival research and oral histories in both France and the United States, this is the first biography of Barrere. It is being published in conjunction with the centennial of his arrival in the United States in May 1905.

Vincent d'Indy and his World (Hardcover, New): Andrew Thomson Vincent d'Indy and his World (Hardcover, New)
Andrew Thomson
R5,283 Discovery Miles 52 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over sixty years after his death in 1931, Vincent d'Indy is still a much misunderstood and maligned figure in French music. Previous biographers have left a portrait of the academic figure par excellence, who turned the seemingly inspired and selfless inspiration of his master Cesar Franck into a cold and authoritarian pedagogical system. This new study re-examines the evidence, reveals a much more psychologically complex and turbulent character, and finds that d'Indy was a tireless propagandist for a spiritual revival of French musical civilization. Yet he was fully aware of the social and intellectual problems of the secular Third Republic which militated against his Dante-inspired Catholic humanism, embodied in the work of the Schola Cantorum, the Paris institution founded by d'Indy to reform the practice of sacred music. Far from being a pure reactionary, his outlook was in reality remarkably progressive, manifest in his revivals of early music, notably Monteverdi's Orfeo, his encouragement of Debussy, and his willingness to engage - often pugnaciously - with the latest musical manifestations of Richard Strauss, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and Varese. His own compositions likewise contain passages of astonishingly bold invention and modernistic effects, all too easily overlooked.

George Michael - The Life 1963-2016 (Paperback): Emily Herbert George Michael - The Life 1963-2016 (Paperback)
Emily Herbert 1
R258 R214 Discovery Miles 2 140 Save R44 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, George Michael was raised in a family of Greek Cypriot immigrants in North London, and dreamed of stardom when he was a little boy. At just twelve years old he met Andrew Ridgeley and the two of them went on to achieve stunning success in the early 1980s with Wham!, creating music that remains popular to this day. Yet despite the enormous success of Wham!, George wanted more, and so set about recreating himself as a serious solo artist, reaching heights of even greater success. Ironically, however, even from the early days he was plagued with insecurity about his sexuality, which, combined with the calamity of losing his first lover to AIDS and his mother to cancer, plunged him into a lifelong struggle with drug addiction. He died, at the tragically early age of just fifty-three, on Christmas Day 2016. George Michael's life and career brought him international fame, and his sudden and unexpected death shocked the world. His unrivalled popularity as an artist, however, and the music he made, have turned him into one of the immortal greats of pop music. As Emily Herbert shows in this new biography, his legacy is not just his music, but his many extraordinary, and often anonymous, acts of charity.

The Telemann Compendium (Hardcover): Steven Zohn The Telemann Compendium (Hardcover)
Steven Zohn
R2,126 Discovery Miles 21 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first guide to research on Telemann in any language. This book is the first guide to research on the composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) in any language. Although the scholarly 'Telemann Renaissance' is now a half-century old, there has never been a book intended to serve asa gateway for further study. Apart from a handful of biographies, dictionary entries, and annotated bibliographies (many of which are now severely out of date), students of Telemann's life and music have been left to dive into the secondary literature in order to get their bearings. Considering that this now burgeoning literature has mainly taken the form of German dissertations and conference proceedings, it is small wonder that the field of Telemann studies has been relatively slow to develop in the English-speaking world. And yet the veritable explosion of performances, both live and recorded, of the composer's music in recent decades has won him an ever-increasing following among musicians and concert-goers worldwide. As with other books in the Composer Compendia series, the book includes a brief biography, dictionary, works-list, and selective bibliography.

This is the incredible illustrated story of the Bee Gees, the band that Barry, Maurice and Robin, the brothers Gibb, formed in 1958. The trio were especially successful as a popular music act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and later as prominent performers of the disco music era in the mid-to-late1970s with the soundtrack album Saturday Night Fever. The group sang recognizable three-part tight harmonies; Robin's clear vibrato lead vocals was the hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry's R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the mid-to-late 1970s and 1980s. The Bee Gees have sold over 120 million records worldwide making them one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. The boys also wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. The Bee Gees' Hall of Fame citation says, "Only Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have out sold the Bee Gees." Following Maurice's death in January 2003 at the age of 53, Barry and Robin retired the group's name after 45 years of activity.

Beast - John Bonham and the Rise of Led Zeppelin (Paperback): C M Kushins, Dave Grohl Beast - John Bonham and the Rise of Led Zeppelin (Paperback)
C M Kushins, Dave Grohl
R458 Discovery Miles 4 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The first full-length narrative biography of Led Zeppelin's John Bonham, considered by many to be one of the greatest drummers in rock history, and a genuine wild man of epic (and sadly fatal) proportions. Beast: John Bonham and the Rise of Led Zeppelin is the first-ever biography of the iconic John Bonham, considered by many to be one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) rock drummer of all time. Bonham first learned to play the drums at the age of five, and despite never taking formal lessons, began drumming for local bands immediately upon graduating from secondary school. By the late 1960s, Bonham was looking for a more solid gig in order to provide his growing family with a more regular income. Meanwhile, following the dissolution of the popular blues rock band The Yardbirds, lead guitarist Jimmy Page sought the company of new bandmates to help him record an album and tour Scandinavia as the New Yardbirds. A few months later, Bonham was recruited to join the band who would eventually become known as Led Zeppelin-and before the year was out, Bonham and his three bandmates would become the richest rock band in the world. In their first year, Led Zeppelin released two albums and completed four US and four UK concert tours. As their popularity exploded, they moved from ballrooms and smaller clubs to larger auditoriums, and eventually started selling out full arenas. Throughout the 1970s, Led Zeppelin reached new heights of commercial and critical success, making them one of the most influential groups of the era, both in musical style and in their approach towards the workings of the entertainment industry. They added extravagant lasers, light shows, and mirror balls to their performances; wore flamboyant and often glittering outfits; traveled in a private jet airliner and rented out entire sections of hotels; and soon become the subject of frequently repeated stories of debauchery and destruction while on tour. In 1977, the group performed what would be their final live appearance in the US, following months of rising fervor and rioting from their fandom. And in September of 1980, Bonham-plagued by alcoholism, anxiety, and the after-effects of years of excess-was found dead by his bandmates. To this day, Bonham is posthumously described as one of the most important, well-known, and influential drummers in rock, topping best of lists describing him as an inimitable, all-time great. As Adam Budofsky, managing editor of Modern Drummer, explained, "If the king of rock 'n' roll was Elvis Presley, then the king of rock drumming was certainly John Bonham."

R2,689 Discovery Miles 26 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dave Brubeck's Time Out ranks among the most popular, successful, and influential jazz albums of all time. Released by Columbia in 1959 alongside such other landmark albums as Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and Charles Mingus's Mingus Ah Um, Time Out became the first jazz album to be certified platinum, while its featured track, "Take Five" became the first jazz single to surpass one million copies sold. In addition to its commercial successes, the album is widely recognized as a pioneering endeavor into the use of odd meters in jazz. With its opening track, "Blue Rondo a la Turk" written in 9/8, its hit single "Take Five" in 5/4, and equally innovative plays on the more common 3/4 and 4/4 meters on other tracks, Take Five has played an important role in the development of modern jazz. In this book, author Stephen A. Crist draws on nearly ten years of archival research to offer the most thorough examination to date of this seminal jazz album. Supplementing his research with interviews with key individuals, including Brubeck's widow Iola and daughter Catherine, as well as interviews conducted with Brubeck himself prior to his passing in 2012, Crist paints a complete picture of the album's origins, creation, and legacy. Couching careful analysis of each of the album's seven tracks within historical and cultural context, he offers fascinating insights into the composition and development of some of the albums best known songs. From Brubeck's 1958 State Department-sponsored tour of Turkey during which he first encountered the aksak rhythms that would from the basis of "Blue Rondo a la Turk" to the backstage jam session that laid the seeds for "Take Five", Crist sheds an exciting new light on one of the most significant albums in jazz history.
