This book describes for the first time how Monte Carlo modeling methods can be applied to electron microscopy and microanalysis. Computer programs for two basic types of Monte Carlo simulation are developed from physical models of the electron scattering process--a single scattering program capable of high accuracy but requiring long computation times, and a plural scattering program which is less accurate but much more rapid. Optimized for use on personal computers, the programs provide a real time graphical display of the interaction. The programs are then used as the starting point for the development of programs aimed at studying particular effects in the electron microscope, including backscattering, secondary electron production, EBIC and cathodo-luminescence imaging, and X-ray microanalysis. The computer code is given in a fully annotated format so that it may be readily modified for specific problems. Throughout, the author includes numerous examples of how such applications can be used. Students and professionals using electron microscopes will want to read this important addition to the literature.

The focus of this volume is comprised of the fundamentals, models, and information technologies (IT) methods and tools for disaster prediction and mitigation. A more detailed list of topics includes mathematical and computational modeling of processes leading to or producing disasters, modeling of disaster effects, IT means for disaster mitigation, including data mining tools, knowledge-based and expert systems for use in disaster circumstances, GIS-based systems for disaster prevention and mitigation and equipment for disaster-prone areas. A specific type or class of disasters (natural or human-made), however will not be part of the main focus of this work. Instead, this book was conceived to offer a comprehensive, integrative view on disasters, seeking to determine what various disasters have in common. Because disaster resilience and mitigation involve humans, societies and cultures, not only technologies and economic models, special attention was paid in this volume to gain a comprehensive view on these issues, as a foundation of the IT tool design.
The authors have developed a computer program that can be of valuable assistance in surgical decision-making for strabismus surgery. The combination of diagnostic data of individual surgical cases, related diagnosis and treatments are incorporated into a well designed, clinically applicable software system. A new way of interactive, virtual eye muscle surgery and preoperative planning is proposed, based on a biomechanical model of the human eye, which enables the prediction of surgical outcomes on the basis of objective, anatomically related and measured data. Additionally, a realistic three-dimensional visualization of the human eyes and their muscles is used to support detailed evaluation and meaningful interpretation of eye motility disorders. This software system is not intended to replace common clinical diagnostics, nor surgical expertise but it should improve the accuracy of clinical decisions in an objective manner.

This book, written in two volumes, is an introductory manual for Magma, a programming language designed for the investigation of algebraic, geometric and combinatorial structures, or "magmas." It presumes no knowledge of computer programming, and its examples are chosen to illustrate language and algorithmic features as simply as possible. Magma is a sophisticated tool for experimentation, education, and computer-aided proof, useful for both students and professional mathematicians. Volume I explains the language and user environment in detail, whereas Volume II deals with the major algebraic, geometrical and combinatorial structures implemented in the system.
This volume describes a cognitive model of student programmers, and an implementation of that model that allows student programmers to be simulated. The focus of the model is on the problem solving that students perform to generate both correct and buggy programs as well as on the individual differences that cause different students to generate different programs for the same programming task. By developing a taxonomy of student programmer knowledge; a model of student program generation; and a preliminary model of individual differences, this research contributes to a better understanding of four areas of the study of student programmers. The most important claim is that a cognitive model of student program generation fits within a properly fleshed out generate test-and-debug (GTD) problem solving architecture in which impasse/repair knowledge plays a key role. This research is important theoretically because it explores the use of a GTD impasse/repair problem solving architecture in a new domain, and important practically because of its educational implications for programming instructions.
Presenting a method for the analysis of ecological ecosystems using numerical models, this text describes the development of these models by means of relational diagrams and rate equations. The calculation of the dynamic behaviour of the models is studied through small computer programs. The approach is illustrated by treating examples ranging from simple exponential growth to the development of an insect population and transport phenomena in soils. About 100 worked examples clarify the theoretical concepts presented and give the book a tutorial nature. The examples often illustrate the process, from defining the problem to the development of a computer program. Examples include models about yeasts, prey-predator interactions, pollutant and organic matter dynamics and heat flow in soil. A simulation language is used to develop the programs, so that the need to learn technical programming details is minimized and attention can be focused on the ecological problem. Use of this language is described in the text. The book concludes with the presentation of a simulation environment in FORTRAN, assuring a high model portability. Those interested in applying systems analysis and simulation in the study of ecological processes, like biologists, agriculturalists and soil scientists, should find this book a valuable introduction. After studying the book, readers should be able to develop their own models and to critically follow the literature on more complex ecosystem models.
Part I highlights the emerging role of power electronic apparatus in power transmission and distribution networks. It also discusses topics in modeling and simulation as pertaining to the utilization of power electronics in large power networks. Part II presents different power electronic converter assemblies for power transmission and power quality enhancement. These are presented in conjunction with suitable models which the readers using the book for self-study need to conduct parametric analyses or as a starting point for future research. The aim of the book is to provide a new approach to power-electronic systems, where modeling becomes an essential part of the study process. The book therefore could be used in a graduate-level course that discusses power electronic components in transmission and distribution. It will also be a valuable resource to the practicing engineers and researchers who want to develop models for emerging circuits.
The purpose of the UML Dictionary is to address the need for an authoritative illustrated dictionary about UML, the standard visual modeling language for specifying, constructing, visualizing, and documenting the artifacts of a software-intensive system. The book specifies a modeling language that incorporates the object-oriented community's consensus on core modeling concepts. The book, which contains a CD with the book's contents in searchable PDF format, is an authoritative, standard illustrated dictionary with liberal cross-referencing per the material on a related website. The site contains 800 distinct terms, and the dictionary contains additional diagrams and resources. The dictionary is suitable for a broad audience and anyone interested in the UML, its terms, and the notation associated with the terms. Although there are no prerequisites for reading the material, knowledge of basic object-oriented concepts would be beneficial. |
