David M. Adamson, Anthony H Pollington
R1,405 Discovery Miles 14 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The UK construction industry is the sixth largest industry in the UK in terms of turnover. During the last decade, it has undergone an unprecedented period of self-examination, including input from most of the leaders of the major suppliers and clients as well as from leading politicians, civil servants and political advisers. From 1993 to 2003, government and industry collaborated closely to achieve political and structural change in the industry and to bring about nothing less than a re-organization of the way it undertakes its business. This key text is an objective presentation of the critical issues inherent in the construction industry during this time. Providing invaluable source material for students of government/industry relations, industry practitioners and clients, and for economic and social commentators, this valuable resource draws on revealing personal accounts from politicians, civil servants, advisers and industry leaders, as well as factual reportage, archives and official papers of the period. Informative and enlightening, this book objectively details and documents exactly what happened at this time, and the reasons for it, and offers an unbiased interpretation of the successes or failures of the various initiatives that emerged, including the Movement for Innovation, Rethinking Construction and Constructing Excellence.

Cornes and Lupton's Design Liability in the Construction Industry 5e (Hardcover, 5th Edition): S Lupton Cornes and Lupton's Design Liability in the Construction Industry 5e (Hardcover, 5th Edition)
S Lupton
R2,577 Discovery Miles 25 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Liability for the design of a building or structure is of fundamental concern to construction professionals, design-build contractors, specialist sub-contractors, and lawyers. Although other texts cover a wide range of aspects of liability, only "Cornes and Lupton's Design Liability in Construction "draws together all those matters that relate specifically to design.

A number of factors have come together recently and are addressed in this significant update and rewrite of the 4th edition, including: popularity of design & build procurementpartnering arrangements and early contractor involvementnew standard forms of construction contract and appointment, and revisions to older formstechnical innovations in constructioncollaborative working and BIM systemsmany well-publicised cases regarding design failuressignificant developments in the law of tort and professional liabilitythe development of the single European market and increased provision of services overseas

Together these factors create a new range of design liability issues which the construction professional has to face. Written for lawyers, architects, engineers, and contractors, the fifth edition of "Design Liability in Construction" will also serve as a useful text for masters level courses in engineering, surveying and construction law.

Building Capitalism (Routledge Revivals) - Historical Change and the Labour Process in the Production of Built Environment... Building Capitalism (Routledge Revivals) - Historical Change and the Labour Process in the Production of Built Environment (Paperback)
Linda Clarke
R1,424 Discovery Miles 14 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1992, this Routledge Revival sees the reissue of a truly original exploration of the nature of urbanization and capitalism. Linda Clarke's vital work argues that: Urbanization is a product of the social human labour engaged in building as well as a concentration of the labour force. The quality of the labour process determines the development of production. Changes to the built environment reflect changes in the production process and, in particular, the development of wage labour. To support these arguments, the author identifies a qualitatively new historical stage of capitalist building production involving a significant expansion of wage labour, and hence capital, and the transition from artisan to industrial production. Linda Clarke draws from a wide range of original material relating to the development of London from the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth century to provide a complete description of the development process: materials extraction, roadbuilding, housebuilding, paving, cleansing, etc; profiles of builders and contractors involved, and a picture of the new working class communities, as in Somers Town - their living conditions, population, working environment, and politics.

  • Includes a list of common technical acronyms (ie. DPC, DPM, FFL)
  • Lists acronyms of common institutions such as the ICE, JCT and ACE

Examples of definitions:

Modular construction

A modern construction method whereby the building is constructed using prefabricated or pre-assembled building sections or modules. The three-dimensional building sections are typically fabricated and assembled in an enclosed factory environment and then delivered to site, ready for installation. Modular construction is aimed at minimising construction time by standardising design components, providing consistent quality and allowing site preparation and building activities to commence concurrently with the construction of the factory-made modules.

Snagging

The process of formally inspecting the construction works to identify any incomplete works or defects in completed works. A snagging list (or punch list ) is a schedule of defects resulting from this inspection. These items typically need to be rectified prior to the issuing of a completion certificate or handing-over of the works although in some cases a completion certificate will be issued with a snagging list attached.

Responsible Corporate Strategy in Construction and Engineering - Doing the Right Thing? (Hardcover, New): Martin Loosemore,... Responsible Corporate Strategy in Construction and Engineering - Doing the Right Thing? (Hardcover, New)
Martin Loosemore, Florence Phua
R3,082 Discovery Miles 30 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The role that communities have to play in the evolution and implementation of an effective strategy is often overlooked, despite the fact that it is becoming increasingly important and complex. This book addresses how consulting and contracting firms in the construction and engineering industries integrate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into business strategy and how this translates into better business performance. In the context of the current global drive towards sustainability, it seeks to untangle the rhetoric and reality of CSR, providing a guide to effective and meaningful engagement with the community in the boardroom.

Ideas, concepts, theories and debates in the previously separate areas of corporate performance; corporate social responsibility; corporate strategy and; corporate governance are integrated for the first time in this book, promoting a more liberal and wider debate about CSR. The result is an important and timely examination of a new challenge which faces every firm in the engineering and construction industry, from the very largest transnational corporations, to consultants and to the many thousands of small and medium sized enterprises that employ the vast majority of people in the industry.

Contemporary research is integrated with practice throughout this book in a clear and easy-to-follow style. The extensive use of real-life examples ensures that the content is of value to managers who have to deal with the reality of the industry on a day-to-day basis. The case studies of some of the world's leading firms provide rich qualitative data to support the arguments and are an excellent source of learning and teaching material to the subject of CSR for students.

A 21st Century Employability Skills Improvement Framework for the Construction Industry (Hardcover): John Aliu, Clinton... A 21st Century Employability Skills Improvement Framework for the Construction Industry (Hardcover)
John Aliu, Clinton Aigbavboa, Wellington Thwala
R4,645 Discovery Miles 46 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book will provide readers with an understanding of the employability concept and develop an employability skills improvement model to enhance the employability of built environment graduates to foster economic development. The developed model determines the influence of generic skills, discipline specific skills, work-integrated learning, emotional intelligence, university-industry collaboration outcomes and 4IR knowledge in predicting the outcomes of improved graduate employability. The model is developed with a theoretical lens on existing frameworks of employability and skills development. Whilst drawing comparisons with countries such as the UK, USA, Australia and Canada, the authors present the results of a two-stage Delphi survey in South Africa as a case study on the current state of skills development and on the skills of the future. The case study is presented in line with the South Africa's long-term National Development Plan (NDP) aimed at developing the key capabilities and skills of its citizens by ensuring quality education on a broader scale by 2030. As automation continues to rapidly advance, the pressures on universities to revamp and restructure their curricula have become increasingly necessary. This book recommends that higher education institutions urgently need to intensify their efforts by introducing significant modifications to the science and technology curriculum to enable students to develop and acquire competencies in the rapidly emerging areas of artificial intelligence, data science, robotics, advanced simulation, data communication, system automation, real-time inventory operations, cloud computing, and information technologies. This implies that universities' curriculum should be infused with 4IR thinking within the conventional primary sciences of biology, chemistry, and physics, with greater emphasis on digital literacy to boost 4IR understanding amongst the graduates. The book is therefore of interest to researchers and policy makers in the built environment that are placed in academia, the construction industry or at consultancy levels, it provides significant recommendations for universities as they intensify their efforts to develop graduates for the future.

Liquidated Damages and Extensions of Time 3e (Hardcover, 3rd Edition): B. Eggleston Liquidated Damages and Extensions of Time 3e (Hardcover, 3rd Edition)
B. Eggleston
R3,079 Discovery Miles 30 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Liquidated damages and extensions of time are complex subjects, frequently forming the basis of contract claims made under the standard building and civil engineering contracts. Previous editions of Liquidated Damages and Extensions of Time are highly regarded as a guide for both construction industry professionals and lawyers to this complex area.
The law on time and damages continues to develop with an increasing flow of judgments from the courts. Alongside this, the standard forms of contract have also developed over time to reflect prevailing approaches to contractual relationships. Against this background a third edition will be welcomed by construction professionals and lawyers alike. Retaining the overall approach of the previous editions, the author clarifies, in a highly readable but legally rigorous way, the many misunderstandings on time and damages which abound in the construction industry. The third edition takes account of a large volume of new case law since the previous edition was published over ten years ago, includes a new chapter on delay analysis and features significantly expanded chapters on penalty clauses, the effects of conditions precedent and time-bars, and the complexities of causation.

Bethlehem Steel - Builder and Arsenal of America (Paperback): Kenneth Warren Bethlehem Steel - Builder and Arsenal of America (Paperback)
Kenneth Warren
R1,499 Discovery Miles 14 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the late 19th century, rails from Bethlehem Steel helped build the United States into the world's foremost economy. During the 1890s, Bethlehem became America's leading supplier of heavy armaments, and by 1914, it had pioneered new methods of structural steel manufacture that transformed urban skylines. Demand for its war materials during World War I provided the finance for Bethlehem to become the world's second-largest steel maker. As late as 1974, the company achieved record earnings of $342 million. But in the 1980s and 1990s, through wildly fluctuating times, losses outweighed gains, and Bethlehem struggled to downsize and reinvest in newer technologies. By 2001, in financial collapse, it reluctantly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Two years later, International Steel Group acquired the company for $1.5 billion. In Bethlehem Steel, Kenneth Warren presents an original and compelling history of a leading American company, examining the numerous factors contributing to the growth of this titan and those that eventually felled it-along with many of its competitors in the U.S. steel industry. Warren considers the investment failures, indecision and slowness to abandon or restructure outdated \u201cintegrated\u201d plants plaguing what had become an insular, inward-looking management group. Meanwhile competition increased from more economical \u201cmini mills\u201d at home and from new, technologically superior plants overseas, which drove world prices down, causing huge flows of imported steel into the United States. Bethlehem Steel provides a fascinating case study in the transformation of a major industry from one of American dominance to one where America struggled to survive.

Developing the Competitive Advantage of Indigenous Construction Firms (Hardcover): Matthew Kwaw Somiah, Clinton Ohis Aigbavboa,... Developing the Competitive Advantage of Indigenous Construction Firms (Hardcover)
Matthew Kwaw Somiah, Clinton Ohis Aigbavboa, Wellington Thwala
R4,638 Discovery Miles 46 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book takes a pragmatic approach to develop the competitive advantage of indigenous construction firms in the Global South, using Ghana as a case study. It provides readers with two major practical insights. The first focuses on the theoretical underpinning of firms' competitive advantage and develops a competitive advantage model for indigenous construction firms. This competitive advantage conceptual framework aids in explaining the main and sub-attributes underpinning the competitive advantage of indigenous construction firms as well as providing the basis for assessing a firm's competitiveness. Secondly, it highlights and addresses theoretical gaps in existing competitive advantage studies deemed essential for indigenous construction firms. Finally, a detailed two-stage Delphi study in the Ghanaian construction industry is presented as a case study. The book is therefore of interest to researchers in construction management, strategic management, civil engineering, business administration, marketing, entrepreneurial and economic studies. It is an essential manual for owners and managers of construction businesses. It is also useful for government departments and non-governmental agencies seeking innovative ways to develop the capacity of indigenous firms and/or contractors to make them more responsive to competitive bidding scenarios, delivery of projects, and satisfying the needs of the industry's stakeholders.

Rebuild America - Solving the Economic Crisis Through Civic Works (Hardcover): Scott Myers-lipton Rebuild America - Solving the Economic Crisis Through Civic Works (Hardcover)
Scott Myers-lipton
R6,035 Discovery Miles 60 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Barack Obama s America public works is once again a part of the national dialogue. Today it is offered as a solution to the economic downturn and to the public infrastructure crisis. This timely book examines the reasons for the economic crisis facing Main Street, and connects them to why the nation has structurally deficient bridges, weak levees, poorly maintained dams, and dilapidated schools. This book explores the new emerging dominant paradigm that will govern the nation, with a particular focus on the federal government s new emphasis to create jobs and build infrastructure. The book analyzes the history of U.S. public works, drawing upon and updating lessons from the New Deal, to understand the most effective way to organize a modern U.S. civic works project, as well as a civic works pilot project for the Gulf Coast. The pilot project is based on the Gulf Coast Civic Works Act, which would create a minimum of 100,000 prevailing wage jobs and training opportunities for local and displaced workers on infrastructure projects and restoring the coastal environment using emerging green building technologies. One chapter features new contributions from Howard Zinn, Angela Glover Blackwell, and other leading scholars, public policy advocates, and community organizers weighing in on how an U.S. civic works project might solve our economic, infrastructure, and environmental crises. Issues discussed in this section include using civic works to create green jobs, to alleviate poverty, to train the next generation of Rosie the Riveters, to organize Gulf Coast residents, to end the human rights crisis in the region, and to implement a national government-run public works project.Listen to the "Journey Home Radio Show" interview with Scott Myers-Lipton: Journey Home Radio Interview"

An Economic History of the American Steel Industry (Hardcover): Robert P. Rogers An Economic History of the American Steel Industry (Hardcover)
Robert P. Rogers
R4,355 Discovery Miles 43 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a basic outline of the history of the American steel industry, a sector of the economy that has been an important part of the industrial system. The book starts with the 1830's, when the American iron and steel industry resembled the traditional iron producing sector that had existed in the old world for centuries, and it ends in 2001. The product of this industry, steel, is an alloy of iron and carbon that has become the most used metal in the world. The very size of the steel industry and its position in the modern economy give it an unusual relevance to the economic, social, and political system.

Economics for the Modern Built Environment (Hardcover): Les Ruddock Economics for the Modern Built Environment (Hardcover)
Les Ruddock
R5,212 Discovery Miles 52 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent decades have seen a major social and economic changes across the developed world and consequent changes in the construction and property industries. The discipline of construction economics needs to respond to this. For instance, the importance of sustainable development has become recognised, as has the need to increasingly master the medium and long-term consequences of construction, not only in the production but also in the management of buildings across their whole life-cycle. And the new focus on the service rendered by buildings, as distinct from the buildings themselves, has prompted a new approach to the construction and property industries. Any economic analysis of these sectors has to take account of all the participants involved in the life-cycle of building structures - not only in the design and construction, but also in the operation, maintenance, refurbishment and demolition of property. This innovative new book draws on the work of the Task Group of the CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation) on Macroeconomics for Construction. It pulls together discussions of mesoeconomic and macroeconomic models and methodologies in construction economics and presents an exciting approach to the analysis of the operation and function of the construction and property sector within the economy. Graduate students and researchers will find it an invaluable work.
