J Colleran originally experimented with processing old and new work evolving into them fresh elements. Taking these textures and layers, he then assembled them into collages to create beds for additional parts to be added. 'EP01' is J Colleran's most essential work to date on an imprint that is one to watch.

Working from The Vennel, his home studio in South Queensferry, Scotland, composer and producer Ben Chatwin creates a musical language permeated with an ambiguity, or tension, between the electronic and acoustic worlds. Much more than just a meeting of the two, what emerges is a daring, vivid and emotionally-charged music unshackled from a traditional sense of structure and genre. Following The Sleeper Awakes (2015) and Heat & Entropy (2016), Staccato Signals is Bens third album under his own name. Set for release on 6th July 2018 through Village Green Recordings, its a bolder and more ambitious record than anything he has written before, largely the result of relinquishing different levels of control over the musical process. Its an album which smoulders with an almost aggressive darkness, yet one that is laced with melodic glimmers of light. This constant pull between the acoustic and the electronic, man versus machine, and the agile production Ben utilised to maintain their balance, is what gives Staccato Signals its powerful and beguiling character. Throughout the album mournful strings are engulfed by harsh, all-encompassing synths, while disorienting climaxes of blazing electronics recall the deafening loudness of an inferno. Yet while the jagged, synthesized textures that needle the album together might call to mind such devastating imagery, the acoustic instruments that feature throughout the album continuously provide a more human counterbalance. 'Staccato Signals' will no doubt appeal to fans of the hybrid forms of Ben Frost, Board of Canada and Tim Hecker. Ben has performed live across the globe with the likes of William Basinski, Hauschka, Tim Hecker, Oneohtrix Point Never and Loscil.

Amsterdam based, Brazilian-born producer and vocalist LYZZA is Big Dada’s latest signing since re-launching as a label run by Black, POC & Minority Ethnic people for Black, POC & Minority Ethnic artists. Making waves in the contemporary electronic scene since the age of 17, LYZZA is a force to be reckoned with and has been described by Beatport as “one of electronic music’s most promising young avant-pop producers. With three EPs under her belt, her fourth project “MOSQUITO” strives toshow her range of abilities within sound and interdisciplinary art. The 10 track mixtape draws inspiration from mosquitoes and the psychological associations we have with them. Characteristically, mosquitoes are invasive and take up space, and this is something that LYZZA strives to be as an artist of colour.

Tennyson (aka Luke Pretty) returns with 'Rot', his first full-length LP, out 18th February 2022 on Counter Records. Throughout the album's 12 tracks Luke refines the signature Tennyson sound, making his flurried beats come into focus and his already riveting hooks catchier. This is also the first project in which Luke lends his voice to almost every song, with the exception coming from a feature with singer-songwriter Rae Morris on the pained but heartfelt 'Slow Dance'. Dramatic dynamics and emotional weight are the driving force of 'Rot', making for pop music fit for misfits. Written during a period of distress, after developing a sudden hearing condition brought on by mold exposure, 'Rot' is a musical diary of a brain gone sideways; the soundtrack of a young artist on the brink of his own disaster. As an escape from these troubles, Luke found solace in what he knew best. He wrote songs on his computer, more to keep his hands busy than thoughtful expression.

Inspired by travelling the world and exploring sounds globally just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic while consuming everything from the likes of Lil Peep to Jammer and Dutch electronic trio Noisia, 'Anomaly' is set to be a cohesive journey of far-off adventures, self-discovery and electronic wizardry. But amongst the enticing tunes, the album is also aligned with What So Not's dedication to important non-music issues, with What So Not recently announced as a finalist for the Environmental Music Prize. Ultimately, immersive adventures overseas not only helped What So Not flex his creative muscles before heading back home to craft his newly-announced full length-album; they also helped shape his ongoing dedication to raising awareness for issues close to his heart, as he concludes, 'Spending time in so many different countries, communities and cultures was such a reality check. We are so fractured and preconditioned to falsities. We have to care about our community and environment, and do what we can in our own circles to collectively protect and benefit everything outside of it. I spent a year travelling the world and exploring sounds. COVID then had me back home, honing in and refining my sonic comprehension. 'Anomaly' is a journey that ruptures reality in order to realise the potential of our own existence. It'll also feature some of the greatest friends and sound experimenters that I've come across in my life'.

Durban's 23 year-old producer Emo Kid presents Gqomtera on Gqom Oh!. The record actually explores sgubhu, a strain of South African dance music that shares many stylistic parallels with gqom, though it is always written with a 4x4 beat. Like DJ Lag before him, an artist widely considered the king of gqom, Emo Kid is also considered a pioneer in Durban. At eight tracks long, Gqomtera provides a comprehensive overview of the sgubhu sound, with the aim of taking the listener on their own "Durban Journey". "I wanted to show the uniqueness of my own style which I would describe as more musical," Emo Kid explains, "you can feel the music when you listen but it still hits hard with that gqom flavor." That gqom flavor, powered by hard, fast, uncompromising drums, provides a solid core from which everything else functions. Bright, shimmering trance synths are featured on "Futuristic Gqom". There's also space for harder, deeper cuts, the charging pace and power of "Insimbi Yase Dubane", and the anthemic "Asbambeki" featuring local crew TLC Fam. Capturing the raw, street sounds of his city, Emo Kid is the latest Durban artist to take the music global and with Gqomtera, he puts sgubhu firmly on the map. Includes a download card with four bonus tracks: "Enkwarini" featuring vocalist Fawell, "Ground Shaker", "Digital Response", and "Isukile" featuring Mapopo.

What happens when you arrive to a party and everyone is leaving as you are walking in If a bass drum booms in the woods but no one is around to hear it, does it even boom at all Can you build a mansion with playing cards Nick Klein returns to ALTER with the cryptically biographical No Shortage of Rope , his third release for the label and significantly, potentially his first full length album. Consisting of 7 tracks, No Shortage of Rope is a consolidated collection of recordings Klein made after leaving his long-term base of NYC to become a full-time resident of Den Haag, Netherlands. Using some newfound free time post-move, Klein wanted to approach his working process in the studio a little differently to create something long form, something that felt more like an album as opposed to being built with the club music paradigm as a given. Describing his time in the studio, Klein says it was 'the most hermetic studio endeavour I have ever undertaken'. It certainly seems that Klein harnessed this period of productivity to make the most of what his music could offer as No Shortage of Rope is the man in his most pointedly pure form. As an artist Klein has followed his own path around the fringes of the contemporary American underground without much worry of where he may end up as a result. This has led the majority of his work to be best contextualised by the rough beat-music associated with artists like Beau Wanzer, Shane English or Container and the celebratory unpretentious world of noise. Opening track Sitting In Glass sets an irreverent foundation with gratuitous chainsaw-like synth noise that sucks the air immediately out of the room. If this is a record made without the club in mind, then we're made aware fairly quickly. The subsequent tracks are more or less Klein back at the office in beat-based terrain, but with some noticeable differences

O’Flynn and Frazer Ray’s (FKA Soundbwoy Killah) collaboration came about naturally after an admiration of each other's music. The record arrives as a result of the duo's love for the UK dance music scene, from garage to breaks, trance and hardcore both Frazer and O’Flynn’s vast knowledge and respect for underground cultures and genres shine through as a direct influence. O’Flynn has become a household name within the UK electronic dance scene over the past few years and has garnered support with plays on Four Tet’s Boiler Room, James Blake’s BBC Radio 1 Residency and an inclusion in Bonobo’s mix for London nightclub Fabric’s esteemed compilation series, whom he collaborated with on ‘Fragments' album track “Otomo”. He released his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Aletheia’ in 2019 for which he embarked on an 18 date UK tour and led to The Guardian citing him as their ‘One to watch’. Frazer Ray also released his debut album ‘Halcyon Daze’ (as Soundbwoy Killah) in 2019 which quickly sold out on vinyl.

"This is not a covers album as such, well certainly not in the standard way. I wanted to bring songs from female artists who I admire into a new arena. I wanted to work with Richard X again and create a true pop record.”

For innovative composer Max de Wardener, music is a kind of time travel, a means of exploring the antique and the arcane and repurposing them for a forward-facing now. 'Palindrome', as the title hints, is a piece of entirely symmetrical music, its written score a perfect mirror of itself, repeating over four bars. B-side, 'Sun Dogs', meanwhile, features softly undulating analogue synths and subtle percussion for a much more relaxed affair.

CUTS, composer and filmmaker Anthony Tombling Jr, is set to release music from his experimental film EXIST for the first time. This April's dual release of EPs EXIST 1 & EXIST 2 on Village Green will precede a debut album on the label. Inspired by a poem by H.P. Lovecraft, EXIST explores night terrors and sleep paralysis. The 40-minute film, described by CUTS as an existential journey into nowhere features narration from cult graphic novelist Alan Moore (Watchmen, V For Vendetta, DC Comics, 2000AD). Since the film was premiered at Dark Outside, the unique 24 hour site specific festival in the Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park, in 2015; the music hasn't been made available until now. CUTS music has been described as diving-bell-deep growls to sky-scraping, synthetic peals by Crack Magazine with The 405 noting clear influences from the powerful build of Mogwai tracks to the My Bloody Valentine-esque use of distortion and distant vocals. On CUTS EP1 released by Invada, The Quietus wrote the buzz and hum of fed-back electronics get underscored by the undoubtedly sinister-feeling creep of industrial percussive mechanisms. EXIST 2' includes the track Bunsen Burner, in original and Redux form, which can be heard on the Ivor Novello winning original soundtrack to Alex Garland's sci fi masterpiece Ex Machina, featuring in the film's memorable climactic final scene. The track also featured in the finale of JJ Abrams cult hit US TV show Person Of Interest. CUTS has performed at ATP, Simple Things, Drill Festival and played with Fuck Buttons, James Holden, Haxan Cloak and Wire. CUTS debut album is set for release later this year on Village Green. 1. David Sheppard first conceived Snow Palms as a vehicle for music played on mallet instruments (metallophones, glockenspiels, xylophones, marimbas, etc), devices that have featured intermittently across almost two decades-worth of the multi-instrumentalist's miscellaneous collaborative projects that include State River Widening, Ellis Island Sound, The Wisdom of Harry and Phelan-Sheppard, among a host of others. Snow Palms' 2012 debut album Intervals won a sheaf of approving notices for its ineffably cinematic blend of polyrhythmic percussion and richly melodic orchestration, partly achieved in collaboration with arranger-composer Christopher Leary (aka Ochre). Two years in the making, the follow-up builds on the foundations of its predecessor, with a heavy quotient of metallophones, glockenspiels and marimbas at its core, but largely eschews the latter's chamber arrangements in favour of soaring synth-scapes and a palette of spectral ambient and electronic textures. Despite that, Origin and Echo is a more performative record than was Intervals, its eleven organic, kinetic pieces meticulously constructed by Sheppard from initial percussive skeletons largely essayed instinctively, in free time, without click-tracks and with almost no guitar. The album is loosely predicated on themes of mirroring and rebounding, whether physical or metaphorical, inspired by everything from the gravity-defying parabolas of space flight to patterns of human migration and feelings of deja vu summoned by nostalgic journeys.

London-based singer-songwriter, producer and DJ, SG Lewis' second full-length album 'Audio Lust & Higher Love'. SG Lewis builds on the kaleidoscopic future-disco of his debut album 'times', in an expansive and ambitious record made of two halves: on one end of the spectrum, he crafts the kind of nocturnal bangers that dancefloors, underground raves, pool parties, and festivals subsist on. On the other end, he accesses a higher level of timeless pop ecstasy anchored by just the right amount of breezy hook-laden rock, organic instrumentation, and vocal eloquence. SG Lewis has cemented his status as one music's most sought after producers, collaborating with the likes of Elton John, Clairo, Khalid, Aluna, Victoria Monet, Raye, Ray BLK, The Neptunes/N.E.R.D's Chad Hugo, Gerd Janson, Conducta and many more across his illustrious career.

3 : Dream Voyager (Ben Chatwin Remix) - CUTS
'Dream Voyager', taken from composer and film-maker Anthony Tombling Jr's recent CUTS EP 'EXIST 1', gets the remix treatment. The original's electric hum, pounding drums and indistinct vocals are reassembled by shoegaze heavyweights Slowdive and Village Green labelmate Ben Chatwin. The former remould the tune in their image by adding a pulsating heartbeat and swathes of atmospheric guitar while on the flip, Chatwin transforms the tune almost beyond recognition, into a rumbling monster decked with cascading analogue synths and distorted percussion. "Dream Voyager is completely influenced by my experiences with sleep paralysis feeling conscious but locked in your dream world whilst it takes place around you in your paralysed state. It's like you become a witness to your own dream. You enter another reality and that can be quite terrifying. It's a portal of confusion where the narrative is blurred. You become the voyager the dream voyager. I'm delighted Slowdive and Ben Chatwin have reinterpreted it.

Siavash Amini returns to Hallow Ground with A Mimesis of Nothingness his fourth album for the Swiss label. Following up on Harmistice together with fellow Iranian artists 9T Antiope, the six tracks were conceived in close collaboration with another artist and see the prolific composer intensify his interdisciplinary approach. The six tracks enter a dialogue with the photographs of Nooshin Shafiee, an acclaimed artist whose work capturing their hometown Tehran becomes the starting point for one of Amini s most visceral and haunting records. »A Mimesis of Nothingness« translates the ephemeral situations and melancholic moods of Shafiee s pictures into suspenseful soundscapes that masterfully navigate between the concrete and the abstract. A Mimesis of Nothingness is a disquieting record precisely because it is a quiet one. Working with field recordings, Amini sculpts dynamic portraits that create an atmosphere of tangible suspense that is never fully released. Even when string-like sounds enter the picture as they do on the third track Moonless Garden or when the abstract and glacial noise on Observance (Shadow) demand the listener s attention, the six pieces take hold of the subconscious rather than trying to be direct and confrontational. It is sound conceived not as a description, but a circumscription of spatial relations and the eeriness embedded in them.
