CUTS, composer and filmmaker Anthony Tombling Jr, is set to release music from his experimental film EXIST for the first time. This April's dual release of EPs EXIST 1 & EXIST 2 on Village Green will precede a debut album on the label. Inspired by a poem by H.P. Lovecraft, EXIST explores night terrors and sleep paralysis. The 40-minute film, described by CUTS as an existential journey into nowhere features narration from cult graphic novelist Alan Moore (Watchmen, V For Vendetta, DC Comics, 2000AD). Since the film was premiered at Dark Outside, the unique 24 hour site specific festival in the Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park, in 2015; the music hasn't been made available until now. CUTS music has been described as diving-bell-deep growls to sky-scraping, synthetic peals by Crack Magazine with The 405 noting clear influences from the powerful build of Mogwai tracks to the My Bloody Valentine-esque use of distortion and distant vocals. On CUTS EP1 released by Invada, The Quietus wrote the buzz and hum of fed-back electronics get underscored by the undoubtedly sinister-feeling creep of industrial percussive mechanisms. EXIST 2' includes the track Bunsen Burner, in original and Redux form, which can be heard on the Ivor Novello winning original soundtrack to Alex Garland's sci fi masterpiece Ex Machina, featuring in the film's memorable climactic final scene. The track also featured in the finale of JJ Abrams cult hit US TV show Person Of Interest. CUTS has performed at ATP, Simple Things, Drill Festival and played with Fuck Buttons, James Holden, Haxan Cloak and Wire. CUTS debut album is set for release later this year on Village Green. 1. Amsterdam based, Brazilian-born producer and vocalist LYZZA is Big Dada’s latest signing since re-launching as a label run by Black, POC & Minority Ethnic people for Black, POC & Minority Ethnic artists. Making waves in the contemporary electronic scene since the age of 17, LYZZA is a force to be reckoned with and has been described by Beatport as “one of electronic music’s most promising young avant-pop producers. With three EPs under her belt, her fourth project “MOSQUITO” strives toshow her range of abilities within sound and interdisciplinary art. The 10 track mixtape draws inspiration from mosquitoes and the psychological associations we have with them. Characteristically, mosquitoes are invasive and take up space, and this is something that LYZZA strives to be as an artist of colour.

"This is not a covers album as such, well certainly not in the standard way. I wanted to bring songs from female artists who I admire into a new arena. I wanted to work with Richard X again and create a true pop record.”
‘Daniel’, an interpretation of the Bat For Lashes classic is the first single to be heard from the brand new album which will also feature re-imagined versions of songs from the likes of Robyn, London Grammar, Everything But The Girl, Lykke Li, Solange and more.

2 : Sun Dogs - Max De Wardener
For innovative composer Max de Wardener, music is a kind of time travel, a means of exploring the antique and the arcane and repurposing them for a forward-facing now. 'Palindrome', as the title hints, is a piece of entirely symmetrical music, its written score a perfect mirror of itself, repeating over four bars. B-side, 'Sun Dogs', meanwhile, features softly undulating analogue synths and subtle percussion for a much more relaxed affair.

David Sheppard first conceived Snow Palms as a vehicle for music played on mallet instruments (metallophones, glockenspiels, xylophones, marimbas, etc), devices that have featured intermittently across almost two decades-worth of the multi-instrumentalist's miscellaneous collaborative projects that include State River Widening, Ellis Island Sound, The Wisdom of Harry and Phelan-Sheppard, among a host of others. Snow Palms' 2012 debut album Intervals won a sheaf of approving notices for its ineffably cinematic blend of polyrhythmic percussion and richly melodic orchestration, partly achieved in collaboration with arranger-composer Christopher Leary (aka Ochre). Two years in the making, the follow-up builds on the foundations of its predecessor, with a heavy quotient of metallophones, glockenspiels and marimbas at its core, but largely eschews the latter's chamber arrangements in favour of soaring synth-scapes and a palette of spectral ambient and electronic textures. Despite that, Origin and Echo is a more performative record than was Intervals, its eleven organic, kinetic pieces meticulously constructed by Sheppard from initial percussive skeletons largely essayed instinctively, in free time, without click-tracks and with almost no guitar. The album is loosely predicated on themes of mirroring and rebounding, whether physical or metaphorical, inspired by everything from the gravity-defying parabolas of space flight to patterns of human migration and feelings of deja vu summoned by nostalgic journeys.

London-based singer-songwriter, producer and DJ, SG Lewis' second full-length album 'Audio Lust & Higher Love'. SG Lewis builds on the kaleidoscopic future-disco of his debut album 'times', in an expansive and ambitious record made of two halves: on one end of the spectrum, he crafts the kind of nocturnal bangers that dancefloors, underground raves, pool parties, and festivals subsist on. On the other end, he accesses a higher level of timeless pop ecstasy anchored by just the right amount of breezy hook-laden rock, organic instrumentation, and vocal eloquence. SG Lewis has cemented his status as one music's most sought after producers, collaborating with the likes of Elton John, Clairo, Khalid, Aluna, Victoria Monet, Raye, Ray BLK, The Neptunes/N.E.R.D's Chad Hugo, Gerd Janson, Conducta and many more across his illustrious career.

3 : Dream Voyager (Ben Chatwin Remix) - CUTS
'Dream Voyager', taken from composer and film-maker Anthony Tombling Jr's recent CUTS EP 'EXIST 1', gets the remix treatment. The original's electric hum, pounding drums and indistinct vocals are reassembled by shoegaze heavyweights Slowdive and Village Green labelmate Ben Chatwin. The former remould the tune in their image by adding a pulsating heartbeat and swathes of atmospheric guitar while on the flip, Chatwin transforms the tune almost beyond recognition, into a rumbling monster decked with cascading analogue synths and distorted percussion. "Dream Voyager is completely influenced by my experiences with sleep paralysis feeling conscious but locked in your dream world whilst it takes place around you in your paralysed state. It's like you become a witness to your own dream. You enter another reality and that can be quite terrifying. It's a portal of confusion where the narrative is blurred. You become the voyager the dream voyager. I'm delighted Slowdive and Ben Chatwin have reinterpreted it.

Bright Light Bright Light's Fun City (Pink Vinyl) is a pop-prolific musical map nodding to disco, electronica, boogie, balladry and even musical theatre. Opener Touchy, a duet with Australian queer auteur Brandon MacLean, Rod Thomas imagines is 'like being in the Moulin Rouge when a troupe of drag kings come out wearing feather boas and top hats.' The record shimmies further into the twilight, tagging a compendium guestlist of artists spelling out the past and future of the LGBTQ+ experience. It is a record about honouring our responsibility to one another in sketchy, antagonistic times.

'Kolmar' is a fantastical journey through time and space, with De Wardener working idiosyncratically with a range of rare instruments and arcane sythesizers. The album features collaborations with Thomas Bloch and London jazz sensation Moses Boyd, as De Wardener dramatically explores his ambient, kosmische and rhythmic leanings.

Having first made his mark as a songwriter and guitarist for Los Angeles’ Allah-Las, Pedrum Siadatian has etched out a place of his own with his solo work as PAINT. What started as modest 4-track experiments quickly took on a life of their own as Pedrum began distilling his musical and lyrical inspirations into something both timeless and new. His miniature menagerie of light-psych and proto-punk gems had outgrown their cassette cage and were now ready to be heard. PAINT’s eponymous debut (Mexican Summer, 2018) appeared out of the ether, fully formed. It was praised for its originality and drew favorable comparisons to the likes of Kevin Ayers, Lou Reed and Julian Cope. The mess was the message and the decidedly mid-fi production found Siadatian both honoring and eschewing tradition. The album was accompanied by videos for the singles “Daily Gazette” and “Moldy Man,” both directed by Sam Kristofski (Connan Mockasin, Pond), with select performances in North America, UK, and Europe. This year sees PAINT returning with the release of the ambitious Spiritual Vegas. While Ray Davies-smirks and Kevin Ayers-wit abound, Siadatian’s singular touch is unmistakable. Joined once again by producer / engineer Frank Maston at the helm, Spiritual Vegas features a rogue’s gallery of players with performances by Jackson Macintosh (TOPS, Sheer Agony) on bass and guitar, Nick Murray (White Fence, Oh Sees) on drums, and brothers-in-Las Spencer Dunham and Matt Correia on bass and percussion respectively. The production is a clear departure from PAINT’s debut- with an increased clarity and tonal variety, drawing inspiration from 80’s/90’s art-rock like The Meat Puppets and The Magnetic Fields. “Ta Fardah” (Til Tomorrow) is an early standout. Sung in Farsi, a nod to Siadatian’s Iranian heritage, it’s a crate digger's dream -- channeling 70’s Persian funk melodrama that might have been a nightclub dancefloor hit in pre-revolution Tehran. On “Landman” we hear Siadatian protest all things aquatic, despite social pressures to the contrary. He sings “I’m no Toucan Sam-man, in some guitar jam band” on this Kinks-y ode to land-locked life, complete with “bah bah bah” harmonies and a tropical marimba line. The record closes with the minimalist jazz of “Impressions.” It centers on a moody keyboard figure as lazy jazz guitar, sax, and flute solos weave in and out. Both melancholy and triumphant, “Impressions” is a fitting end to an album that explores both feelings and posits they might actually be the same. The title Spiritual Vegas was inspired by a visit to Bali, Indonesia, where Siadatian was struck by the juxtaposition of tourists seeking either Instagram enlightenment or Vegas-like debauchery. Is there really a difference? Awakening comes in many forms and as Siadatian intones on opener “Strange World,” “the moment you find laughter’s the key/ the sooner you’ll be free” -- a fortune cookie philosophy for both the record and the world at large.

Following Julys Staccato Signals, the much-acclaimed third album under his own name, this autumn composer and producer Ben Chatwin will release its companion piece Drone Signals, available via Village Green Recordings on 14th September. Unlike Staccato Signals where Ben started with a blank slate and built the music up layer by layer, finishing with the string quartet, this time the process began with everything on hand. The task became dismantling the tracks stripping them apart to see what was left, letting certain sounds or instruments become the focus, and then rebuilding the arrangements around them. This allowed elements to breathe, yet also to become more static. The less chaotic and more ambient nature of these pieces suggested a related album of versions, a conceptual sibling Drone Signals. Feeding string parts through an array of modular synthesisers, utilising modern sampling and granular synthesis, Ben remoulded what was once players performing in a room into new microscopic electronic textures. By using the final element of the previous album, recording the strings, as a starting point to feed into his machines, Ben developed a central conceptual tool of his previous album giving up control even further. The result is a fractured and dissembled interpretation of Staccato Signals as performed by modular synthesisers. In this way, Drone Signals might best be understood as the aftermath of Staccato Signals, a post-apocalyptic sonic landscape. It retains much that made Staccato Signals such a rewarding album its mournful beauty, the tense, ambiguous relationship between electronic and acoustic elements, and a delicate if not volatile balance between elegance and intensity. This time, however, the palette is broader, more static concerned more with monolithic structures than with sharp edges.

It was in 2019 that Matteo (one of the 3 members of the band Chinese Man and co-founder of the label CMR) met the first musicians who would be part of the project "Matteo & Bro". Starting with guitarist Karim Addadi and bassist Christophe Lincontang (with whom he collaborates on a film score), Matteo then surrounded himself with drummer Hugo Pollon and saxophonist, flutist and Duduk (Armenian flute) player Lamine Diagne. A real desire to launch a project where the musicians are at the heart of the creative process progressively grew as the meetings went on. The artists gather in Bron (near Lyon) for the composition of the eponymous opening track. On this album we also find the voices of two female artists, Isadora (Belgium) on "Sweet Shadows" and Tania Saleh (Lebanon) on "Sakakeen", as well as General Elektriks with its keyboards and its sublime groove on several tracks ("Bina" & "Prumirim"). Between programming & electronic production, arrangements and composition, the demos take shape, the groove and the universe between soul, funk, trip hop and world music extend the desire and the production of an album. Due to the health crisis, the album is finally recorded in late 2021 with the help of Sodi, sound engineer and producer of many albums (Fela & Femi Kuti, Saul Williams, Deluxe, IAM ...).

From storied composer Jim Copperthwaite comes the debut album Ballroom Ghosts. As a soundtrack artist in his own right, Jim's tracks recall the work of Danny Elfman in their haunting, choral refrains. However, Jim has also always had an affinity for the avant-garde, and his music-box orchestrations are driven through with the repetitive, percussive iterations of a Steve Reich - calling to mind Jamie xx's most recent collaborations with Wayne McGregor and the Royal Ballet. This debut album from Jim Copperthwaite stands out as his most intimate and personal work to date: a fantastical demonstration of a composer at the peak of his abilities. It is an invitation to a world that exists beneath the one we see. Close your eyes and come walk these halls, and experience the atmospheric beauty of Ballroom Ghosts.
