Since 2002, the Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry has
proposed "Interface Oral Health Science" as a major theme for
next-generation dental research. That theme is based on the
following new concept: healthy oral fu- tion is maintained by
biological and biomechanical harmony among three s- tems: (1) oral
tissues (host); (2) parasitic microorganisms of the oral cavity
(parasites); and (3) biomaterials. The concept implies that oral
diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and
temporomandibular disorders should be interpreted as "interface
disorders" that result from disruption of the intact int- face
among these systems. The uniqueness of this concept rests on the
fact that it not only encompasses the field of dentistry and dental
medicine, but also expands the common ground shared with other
fields, including medicine, ag- culture, material science,
engineering, and pharmacology. We aim to promote advances in dental
research and to activate collaboration with related fields by
putting interface oral health science into practice. On this basis,
we have already organized the 1st and 2nd International Symposiums
for Interface Oral Health Science, which included inspiring special
lectures, symposiums, poster pres- tations, and other discussions.
The contents of the two symposiums were p- lished as monographs
entitled Interface Oral Health Science in 2005 and 2007. The 3rd
International Symposium was held in January 2009 as part of this
project.

An accessible, essential introduction to forensic odontology.
Written by a team of well-established, active practitioners in the
field, Forensic Odontology is invaluable for those needing an
introduction to the subject for the general dental practitioner who
has an interest in forensic dentistry and is contemplating
practicing in the field. It will also be useful as a reference
during practice. After a brief introduction the book covers dental
anatomy and development, expert witness skills, mortuary practice,
dental human identification, disaster victim identification, dental
age assessment, bite marks, forensic photography and the role of
the forensic odontologist in protection of the vulnerable person.
Chapters outline accepted and recommended practices and refer to
particular methodologies, presenting different schools of thought
objectively.
For all introductory, clinical, and preventive courses in dental
hygiene and dental assisting that cover preventive dental
modalities and concepts. Organized for consistency, coherence, and
readability, this fully updated text covers all areas of prevention
in dental care. It first describes dental diseases and conditions,
helping students clearly understand the processes that can be
prevented through the use of preventive modalities or ideas. Next,
it presents detailed strategies to prevent these diseases and
conditions. Throughout, specific target populations are defined and
described based upon scientifically valid preventive strategies
aimed at their needs. This edition improves student understanding
with more photos, illustrations, diagrams, and tables; highlights
"fun facts" about the topic; adds a new chapter on the important
influence culture plays in preventive dental care; and is supported
by many new web-based review questions and case studies for each
chapter.

assistants and hygienists. This clear, up-to-date, and
student-friendly text tightly links oral radiological principles
with modern practice. It presents all information needed for
introductory courses in dental radiography, preparing students for
board and licensing examinations while offering real-world
resources for clinical practice and patient management. Coverage
includes: historical perspectives, radiation basics, biologic
effects and protection, dental X-ray image receptors, processing
techniques; dental radiographer fundamentals, intraoral and
extraoral techniques, radiographic errors, quality assurance;
mounting and viewing radiographs, and patient management. This
Ninth Edition integrates coverage of digital imaging throughout,
presents paralleling and bisecting techniques in separate chapters,
and adds a new chapter on safety and environmental
responsibilities. It also contains many new study questions and
improved images.
In this book, a panel of experts discuss the molecular biology of
micro-organisms involved in the two major dental diseases: caries
and periodontal disease. Research has focused on factors which
might modulate the interaction between the resident oral bacteria
and the host. Chapters deal with the interactions of oral
micro-organisms with one another and with the host; the innate
defense mechanisms of the host; and the development of vaccines
against oral diseases. Topics include oral microbial taxonomy,
identification and typing, applied genomics, horizontal gene
transfer, cell-cell communication, cariogenic bacteria,
aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, porphyromonas gingivalis,
treponema denticola, host-pathogen interaction, host defense
mechanisms, and vaccination against oral infections. Essential
reading for students and researchers in the field of oral biology
and oral microbiology and a recommended book for all microbiology
laboratories.

procedures that might soon be out of date.
The Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry first introduced
the concept of "Interface Oral Health Science", designed to
establish and maintain healthy oral cavities, which are home to a
number of mixed systems. Included in those systems are: (1) host
tissues such as teeth, mucosa, muscle and bone, (2) parasites and
microorganisms cohabiting the surfaces of the oral cavity and (3)
biomaterials that are used for the rehabilitation of oral
functions. In addition, (4) these systems are subject to severe and
complex mechanical forces. Therefore, it is critical to promote
dental studies that integrate a wide range of interdisciplinary
research as medicine, agriculture, material science, engineering,
and pharmacology. With this incentive, international symposiums for
interface oral health science have been held several times in the
past. The concept has since refined and expanded, the result being
the "Biosis-Abiosis Intelligent Interface," and projects aiming at
the creation of highly functional and autonomic intelligent
interfaces are ongoing. This book brings together a number of
studies on incentives and projects by leading authors. Topics
include biosis-abiosis interface of dental implants, biomaterials
in interface science, biomedical engineering interface and cell
manipulation and tissue regeneration. Readers not only from the
field of dentistry but also many related areas will find this book
a valuable resource.
The three keywords, Orthodontics, Europe and Quality represent the
important issues in this book, describing the EURO-QUAL, BIOMED 1
Programme. In this Programme, individuals and representatives of
institutions have been asked to contribute to the discussion on the
development of a quality system for orthodontic care. The
philosophy of Total Quality Management was adopted and specific
emphasis was given to patient quality. When considering how the
structure and quality of European orthodontic care continuously can
be improved, there are certain conditions which are difficult to
modify. From the start this has been realised and respected and
therefore the guidelines for the quality are flexible and can be
adapted to different conditions. Available knowledge has been
bundled and an attempt has been made to understand the reality of
orthodontic care in Europe: the product and the process.

This book gives an introduction to the mechanical behavior and
degradation of dental ceramics and guides the reader through their
performance under effect of oral environments. It addresses the
different kinds of dental ceramics, their properties, degradation
and mechanical aspects with less emphasys on the physics and
chemistry involved, which makes the reading interesting for
beginners in the field. In each chapter, the reader will learn
about the mechanical behavior of dental ceramics and each
phenomenon involved in their application, besides finding some
practical examples of their use in dental clinics, their
manufacturing procedures and types of degradation. The clear
language and the application-oriented perspective of the book makes
it suitable for both professionals and students who want to learn
about dental ceramics.
