Hebrew Scripture in Patristic Biblical Theory - Canon, Language, Text (Hardcover): Edmon Louis Gallagher Hebrew Scripture in Patristic Biblical Theory - Canon, Language, Text (Hardcover)
Edmon Louis Gallagher
R5,491 Discovery Miles 54 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The status of the Christian Old Testament as originally Hebrew scripture had certain theoretical implications for many early Christians. While they based their exegesis on Greek translations and considered the LXX inspired in its own right, the Fathers did acknowledge the Hebrew origins of their Old Testament and in some ways defined their Bible accordingly. Hebrew scripture exerted its influence on patristic biblical theory especially in regard to issues of the canon, language, and text of the Bible. For many Fathers, only documents thought to be originally composed in Hebrew could be considered canonical, the Hebrew language was considered the primordial language subsequently confined to Israel, and the LXX, as the most faithful translation, corresponded precisely to the Hebrew text.

Grace and the Will According to Augustine (Hardcover): Lenka Karfikova Grace and the Will According to Augustine (Hardcover)
Lenka Karfikova
R6,891 Discovery Miles 68 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The doctrine on grace, one of the most discussed themes in his later years, was regarded by Augustine as the very core of Christianity. This book traces the gradual crystallisation of this teaching, including its unacceptable consequences (such as double predestination, inherited guilt which deserves eternal punishment, and its transmission through libidinous procreation). How did the reader of Cicero and "the books of the Platonists" reach the ideas that appear in his polemic against Julian (and which remind one of Freud rather than the Stoics or Plotinus)? That is the point of departure of this book. It surely cannot be expected that there is a definite answer to the question; rather, the aim is to follow and understand the development.

The Early Christian Centuries (Paperback): Philip Rousseau The Early Christian Centuries (Paperback)
Philip Rousseau
R1,675 Discovery Miles 16 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A full survey of the first 600 years of Christian history, this is an examination of the earliest years of one of the world's most important religions.

The Early Christian Centuries carries the reader from the world of second-temple Judaism to the Byzantine age, the rise of Islam, and the beginnings of medieval European polities. Stressing the importance of shifting historical consciousness, the continuity and development of ideas, and the urge for social respectability, Rousseau gives the greatest attention to the 'inner' components of the Christian life: authority, worship, biblical interpretation, moral seriousness and spiritual idealism

Intellectus Gratiae - Die erkenntnistheoretische und hermeneutische Dimension der Gnadenlehre Augustins von Hippo (Hardcover):... Intellectus Gratiae - Die erkenntnistheoretische und hermeneutische Dimension der Gnadenlehre Augustins von Hippo (Hardcover)
Josef Loessl
R10,953 Discovery Miles 109 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first large scale study on the link between the concepts of intellect and grace in the writings of St. Augustine of Hippo. Its five chapters deal with Augustine's writings on grace as they focus on questions concerning epistemology and hermeneutics. Already non-Christian ancient philosophers identified intellectual perfection with salvation as caused by divine grace. Under their influence (I) Augustine developed also his biblical thought (II). The culmination of his concept of "intellectus gratiae," however, came in the later works on sacraments (III), hermeneutics (IV) and against Pelagius and Julian of Eclanum (V). This study highlights that development and recommends the concept of "intellectus gratiae" as a possible key to Augustine's theological thought as a whole.

The Birth of Christianity (Paperback, 1st ed): John Dominic Crossan The Birth of Christianity (Paperback, 1st ed)
John Dominic Crossan
R706 R645 Discovery Miles 6 450 Save R61 (9%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this national bestseller, John Dominic Crossan, the world's leading expert on the historical Jesus, reveals how Christianity emerged in the period following Jesus' death. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Crossan shines new light on the theological and cultural contexts from which the Christian church arose. He argues powerfully that Christianity would have happened with or without Paul and contends that Jesus' "resurrection" meant something vastly different for his early followers than it does for many traditional Christians today--what mattered was Christina origins finally illuminates the mysterious period that set Western religious history in its decisive course.

The English Church, 940-1154 (Paperback): H.R. Loyn The English Church, 940-1154 (Paperback)
H.R. Loyn
R2,202 Discovery Miles 22 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses the development of the English Church during a rich and turbulent two centuries of European history. It provides a comprehensive survey covering the late Anglo-Saxon period through the Norman Conquest and right across the Anglo-Norman period. Professor Loyn addresses major themes in medieval history. He begins with the pre-1066 period looking at the great Benedictine monastic revival; he looks at the role of the Church in the Conquest itself; the evidence of the Domesday Book and then considers the activities of the Church in the turbulent years of the Conqueror's successors. The book concludes with a discussion of doctrine, belief and ritual.

Possidius of Calama - A Study of the North African Episcopate in the Age of Augustine (Hardcover): Erika Hermanowicz Possidius of Calama - A Study of the North African Episcopate in the Age of Augustine (Hardcover)
Erika Hermanowicz
R3,750 Discovery Miles 37 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Possidius, the bishop of Calama, was a life-long friend of St. Augustine's and best known for writing a biography of the bishop of Hippo, the Vita Augustini. Hermanowicz analyzes both the biography and the legally-oriented career of Possidius to illustrate how active Augustine's colleagues were in soliciting imperial support against their religious competitors and to show just how often Augustine's close friends disagreed with him on important matters of law, coercion and diplomacy. It is still widely asserted by scholars that St. Augustine dominated the theological landscape of North Africa, but this engaging study demonstrates how often he was, in fact, singular and isolated in his beliefs.

Roman Garrison
R4,944 Discovery Miles 49 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the athlete metaphor in 1 Corinthians 9 to the role of Aphrodite as the goddess of love and sexuality, the important cultural symbols and terminology that the first Christians employed are examined. Basil of Caesarea's Anti-Eunomian Theory of Names - Christian Theology and Late-Antique Philosophy in the Fourth Century... Basil of Caesarea's Anti-Eunomian Theory of Names - Christian Theology and Late-Antique Philosophy in the Fourth Century Trinitarian Controversy (Hardcover)
Mark DelCogliano
R4,937 Discovery Miles 49 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Basil of Caesarea's debate with Eunomius of Cyzicus in the early 360s marks a turning point in the fourth-century Trinitarian controversies. It shifted focus to methodological and epistemological disputes underlying theological differences. This monograph explores one of these fundamental points of contention: the proper theory of names. It offers a revisionist interpretation of Eunomius's theory as a corrective to previous approaches, contesting the widespread assumption that it is indebted to Platonist sources and showing that it was developed by drawing upon proximate Christian sources. While Eunomius held that names uniquely predicated of God communicated the divine essence, in response Basil developed a "notionalist" theory wherein all names signify primarily notions and secondarily properties, not essence.

The Impact of Scripture in Early Christianity (English, French, Latin, Hardcover): J Boeft, M L Van Poll-Van De Lisdonk The Impact of Scripture in Early Christianity (English, French, Latin, Hardcover)
J Boeft, M L Van Poll-Van De Lisdonk
R5,653 Discovery Miles 56 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

One of the most conspicuous innovations of early Christianity within Greco-Roman culture is its reliance upon a collection of authoritative texts. The ultimate author of Scripture was thought to be God Himself, whose will could and should be sought and found in these holy writings. For this reason it is not surprising that very soon these texts not only became the object of careful attention and scholarly study, but also put their stamp on the various forms and manifestations of early Christian life, such as martyrdom, asceticism, liturgy, art, and literature. This multifarious influence of Scripture is the subject of "The Impact of Scripture in Early Christianity," It contains fourteen contributions, predominantly in English, by Belgian and Dutch scholars which have been gathered in a thematically ordered collection.

The Triumph of Christianity - How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World (Paperback): Bart D. Ehrman The Triumph of Christianity - How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World (Paperback)
Bart D. Ehrman 1
R375 R298 Discovery Miles 2 980 Save R77 (21%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

How did Christianity become the dominant religion in the West?

In the early first century, a small group of peasants from the backwaters of the Roman Empire proclaimed that an executed enemy of the state was God’s messiah. Less than four hundred years later it had become the official religion of Rome with some thirty million followers.

It could so easily have been a forgotten sect of Judaism.

Through meticulous research, Bart Ehrman, an expert on Christian history, texts and traditions, explores the way we think about one of the most important cultural transformations the world has ever seen, one that has shaped the art, music, literature, philosophy, ethics and economics of modern Western civilisation.

The Russian Orthodox Church - Triumphalism and Defensiveness (Hardcover): Jane Ellis The Russian Orthodox Church - Triumphalism and Defensiveness (Hardcover)
Jane Ellis
R2,655 Discovery Miles 26 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Russian Orthodox Church has survived more than seventy years of the most brutal and sustained attempts to eradicate religion that has ever been. Weakened but spiritually alive, it is confronted by the demands of a ravaged, exhausted society. Can it, however, find the resources and energy to respond to these demands? Jane Ellis describes the developments and problems in the Russian Orthodox Church under glasnost and especially since the new freedoms were granted following the millennium celebrations of 1988. New opportunities mean new challenges and demand huge new resources. Old problems in the form of close State and KGB contacts remain, and new problems in the form of competition from other denominations and sects arise. Traditionally the Orthodox Church has enjoyed a 'symphony' with the State. However are unhealthy links with the KGB and the communist past still damaging the Church. Is it in danger of becoming a state church?

Aristotle as Poet - The Song for Hermias and Its Contexts (Hardcover): Andrew L. Ford Aristotle as Poet - The Song for Hermias and Its Contexts (Hardcover)
Andrew L. Ford
R1,996 Discovery Miles 19 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Aristotle is known as a philosopher and as a theorist of poetry, but he was also a composer of songs and verse. This is the first comprehensive study of Aristotle's poetic activity, interpreting his remaining fragments in relation to the earlier poetic tradition and to the literary culture of his time. Its centerpiece is a study of the single complete ode to survive, a song commemorating Hermias of Atarneus, Aristotle's father-in-law and patron in the 340's BCE. This remarkable text is said to have embroiled the philosopher in charges of impiety and so is studied both from a literary perspective and in its political and religious contexts.
Aristotle's literary antecedents are studied with an unprecedented fullness that considers the entire range of Greek poetic forms, including poems by Sappho, Pindar, and Sophocles, and prose texts as well. Apart from its interest as a complex and subtle poem, the Song for Hermias is noteworthy as one of the first Greek lyrics for which we have substantial and early evidence for how and where it was composed, performed, and received. It thus affords an opportunity to reconstruct how Greek lyric texts functioned as performance pieces and how they circulated and were preserved. The book argues that Greek lyric poems profit from being read as scripts for performances that both shaped and were shaped by the social occasions in which they were performed. The result is a thorough and wide-ranging study of a complex and fascinating literary document that gives a fuller view of literature in the late classical age.

Hippolytus and the Roman Church in the Third Century - Communities in Tension before the Emergence of a Monarch-Bishop... Hippolytus and the Roman Church in the Third Century - Communities in Tension before the Emergence of a Monarch-Bishop (Hardcover)
Revd Allen Brent
R12,023 Discovery Miles 120 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Allen Brent examines the significance of the Hippolytan events in the life of the Roman Church in the early third century. Developing the thesis of at least two authors in the Hippolytan corpus, he proposes a new, redactional explanation of the relation between these different authors and the theological and social tensions to which their work bears witness. Brent reconstructs a picture of the community that contextualizes both the Hippolytan literature and in particular the Statue, for which he proposes a new interpretation as a community artefact though universally misjudged as a monument to an individual.
Tertullian's relationship with Callistus is finally re-assessed. This work is thus an important contribution to new understandings of a period critical both for the development of Church Order and embryonic Trinitarian Orthodoxy.

The late John Fennell's last book, is a masterly survey of the development, nature and role of the early Church in Russia from Christianization of the country in 988, through Kievan and Tatar poeriods to 1448 when the Russian Church finally became totally independent of its mother-church in Byzantium.

Church and Chronicle in the Middle Ages - Essays Presented to John Taylor (Hardcover, New): Ian Wood Church and Chronicle in the Middle Ages - Essays Presented to John Taylor (Hardcover, New)
Ian Wood
R5,914 Discovery Miles 59 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Church and Chronicle in the Middle Ages is a collection of essays presented to John Taylor, former Life Fellow and medieval scholar at the University of Leeds. With contributions key scholars on topics such as the hagiography of Saint-Wandrille, Swein Forkbeard and the historians, personal seals in 13th-century England, women in the Plumpton Correspondence and medievalism in counter-reformation Sicily, this volume is a rich and varied collection of medieval scholarship and a fitting tribute to Taylor's work from his friends and colleagues.

Porphyry's "Against the Christians" - The Literary Remains (Hardcover): Porphyry, R. Joseph Hoffman Porphyry's "Against the Christians" - The Literary Remains (Hardcover)
Porphyry, R. Joseph Hoffman; Translated by R.Joseph Hoffmann
R891 R811 Discovery Miles 8 110 Save R80 (9%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Throughout its first three centuries, the growing Christian religion was subjected not only to official persecution but to the attacks of pagan intellectuals, who looked upon the new sect as a band of fanatics bent on worldwide domination even as they professed to despise the things of this world. Prominent among these pagan critics was Porphyry of Tyre (ca. 232-ca. 305 C.E.), scholar, philosopher, and student of religions. His book Against the Christians (Kata Christianon), was condemned to be burned by the imperial Church in 448. It survives only in fragments preserved by the cleric and teacher Macarius Magnes.
This new translation of the remains of Against the Christians, by renowned biblical scholar R. Joseph Hoffmann, reveals a work of deft historical and literary criticism. Porphyry's trenchant comments extend to key figures, beliefs, and doctrines of Christianity as he roundly attacks the divinity of Jesus, the integrity of the apostles, the Christian concept of God, and the Resurrection. Porphyry dismisses the gospels as the work of charlatans and Jesus himself as a criminal and failure. In short, the gospels, as a collective account of the life and deeds of Jesus, are hardly worth the reverence with which an increasing number of Christian converts of Porphyry's own day have begun treating them.
Critical notes by the translator provide a running commentary to the text. A lively introduction and comprehensive epilogue describe the "buildup" to the pagan critique of Christianity, and help put Porphyry's work in historical perspective.
Accessible to the general reader, and a valuable scholarly tool as well, this new translation of Against the Christians proves a worthy addition to both classical and patristic studies.

Christ, Creation, and the Vision of God - Augustine's Transformation of Early Christian Theophany Interpretation... Christ, Creation, and the Vision of God - Augustine's Transformation of Early Christian Theophany Interpretation (Hardcover)
Kari Kloos
R4,385 Discovery Miles 43 850 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Why did early Christian authors interpret the biblical theophany narratives as manifestations of Christ? And how was this interpretation challenged by Augustine? This book explores the theological underpinnings of ancient Christian theophany interpretation, tracing its development into two major exegetical strands. Patristic exegesis of the theophanies involved polemic and the formation of Christian identity, the relationship between vision and spiritual transformation, and theological claims about knowing God through creation. While the christological interpretation developed within particular early Christian beliefs and logic, Augustine challenged it using similar logic and foundational beliefs. Through Augustine's reconfigured reading, one may see the critical and creative capacity of patristic authors to adapt, challenge, and transform exegetical traditions.

Exegesis and Theology in Early Christianity (Hardcover, New Ed): Frances Young Exegesis and Theology in Early Christianity (Hardcover, New Ed)
Frances Young
R4,506 Discovery Miles 45 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of articles first brings together a number of working papers which were significant in the development of Frances Young's understanding of patristic exegesis, studies not included in her ground-breaking book, Biblical Exegesis and the Formation of Christian Culture (1997), though paving the way for that work. Then comes a selection of papers on theology, church order and methodology, the whole collection constantly returning to themes such as the fundamental connection between theology and exegesis, the significant role of reflection on language, metaphor and symbol, and the creative interaction of early Christianity with its cultural and intellectual environment. These studies demonstrate the author's scholarly approach to patristic material, whereby careful attention is paid to actual texts from the past; but they also reveal the groundwork for her own theological explorations in the very different intellectual environment of the present.
