Learning to Teach in South Africa is a collection of essays by one of South Africa's most respected thinkers in education. The essays span the crucial years of democratic transition in South Africa and show the consitency of Morrow's thinking over this period. He argues for the retrieval of the primacy of the practice of professional teaching in our thinking about the transformation of schooling and education in South Africa, reveals the emergence of his seminal distinction between formal and epistemological access, puts forward some definitive views about teacher education, and continues to struggle with relativism, one of the strands of the legacies of colonialism and apartheid.
This title reviews curriculum policy, reform and implementation in South African education. This is an edited compilation of the key presentations and discussions that took place between education policy-makers and researchers at the HSRC-sponsored Round Table in September 2000.
Highly regarded among Montessorians this updated edition includes a select bibliography of related texts, a list of classroom materials, a guide to teacher training programs, and advice on choosing a Montessori school for your child.
Gender equity was high on South Africa's social agenda in 1994. Education was seen as a key vehicle for transforming unequal relationships in the broader society. Ten years after South Africa's democratic elections, how far has South Africa come in realising these goals? And how does our own experience relate to that of other countries and contexts? This volumes collects the reflections of policy-makers, researchers, teacher unionists and journalists on successes and challenges in the struggle to mainstream gender and effect gender equality. Their reflections are framed in the context of experiences from India, Australia and Africa. This title shows that the road to gender equity in South African education is still a long one. This title contains papers from a conference held on 18 - 20 May 2004 which brought together leading South African and international experts working on gender equity in education and drawn from the fields of government, research and civil society. The conference was hosted by the British council and the child, youth and family development research programme of the human sciences research council.
Analysing the extent and severity of HIV/AIDS among educators without looking at the broader context within schools operate, provides only a partial understanding of the immense challenges facing the education sector in South Africa. This study examines material issues affecting the quality of teaching and learning in our schools, both within and external to the classroom environment. The findings reveal significant disparities in conditions, both within and between provinces. Compounded by the effects of ill-health related to HIV/AIDS, these disparities are likely to hamper nay efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning in South African public schools, and therefore require serious attention.
This substantive report is essential reading for those involved in higher education planning and policy-making. Based on responses to a survey done in all nine provinces of South Africa, research focuses on Grade 12 learners' intentions to enter higher education and their choices around institution and field of study.
