The Encyclopedia of Codenames of World War II (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover): Christopher Chant The Encyclopedia of Codenames of World War II (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover)
Christopher Chant
R3,556 Discovery Miles 35 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Codenames were a vital feature of World War II, serving as mental shorthand for those in the know, and obscuring the issues for those who were not. Codenames were used from the highest level, in the planning of grand strategic moves affecting the conduct of the whole war, to the lowest command divisions, in the conduct of small-scale tactical operations. This encyclopedia, first published in 1986, removes the mystery surrounding many of the important code names from the era. With around 3,000 entries drawn from all sides - the U.K., U.S.A., Germany, the U.S.S.R. and Japan - Christopher Chant's work provides a uniquely comprehensive and full overview of major operations, names and code words. Thorough and exciting, this key reference reissue is an exceptionally valuable resource for military historians, enthusiasts and general readers with an interest in World War II.

Research Handbook on Gender and Negotiation (Hardcover): Mara Olekalns, Jessica A. Kennedy Research Handbook on Gender and Negotiation (Hardcover)
Mara Olekalns, Jessica A. Kennedy
R5,072 Discovery Miles 50 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this ground-breaking Research Handbook, leading international researchers analyse how negotiators' gender shapes their behaviour and outcomes at the bargaining table, in both work and non-work contexts. World-class experts from the field of negotiation present cutting-edge research on gender and negotiation, highlighting controversies and generating new questions for consideration. The Research Handbook offers helpful insights to negotiators and forges a path for future research. The first section highlights how gender shapes negotiation within close relationships and identifies informal social rules for how women and men are expected to negotiate, exploring the socialization patterns and historical contexts that produced these norms and the implications for women at the bargaining table. Chapters discuss how underlying negotiation processes such as trust, emotion, communication and non-verbal behaviour are shaped by gender, as well as considering a number of pragmatic solutions to the obstacles women face as self-advocates. Offering insights for both practitioners and researchers, this Research Handbook will be invaluable to teachers and, also, female professionals who want to understand how to get better outcomes from negotiation. It will also be required reading for HR professionals who wish to understand how and why organizational policies regarding negotiation can level the playing field. Contributors include: E.T. Marx's Ethics of Freedom (Paperback): George G. Brenkert Marx's Ethics of Freedom (Paperback)
George G. Brenkert
R1,299 Discovery Miles 12 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book reveals Marx's moral philosophy and analyzes its nature. The author shows that there is an underlying system of ethics which runs the length and breadth of Marx's thought. The book begins by discussing the methodological side of Marx's ethics showing how Marx's criticism of conventional morality and his views on historical materialism, determinism and ideology are compatible with having an ideological system of his own. In the light of contemporary social, moral and political philosophy the insights and defects of Marx's major ethical themes are discussed.

Reconstructing Medical Practice - Engagement, Professionalism and Critical Relationships in Health Care (Paperback, New Ed):... Reconstructing Medical Practice - Engagement, Professionalism and Critical Relationships in Health Care (Paperback, New Ed)
Christine Jorm
R1,533 Discovery Miles 15 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reconstructing Medical Practice examines how doctors see health care and their place in it, why they remain in medicine and why they are limited in their ability to lead change in the current system. Doctors are beset by doubts and feel rejected by systems where they should be leaders - some see their role as 'flog[ging] a derelict system to get the last breath of workability out ... for their patients'. Others simply turn away. Rigorous studies carried out at large public teaching hospitals in Australia found that doctors were reluctant to increase safety in the wider health system, despite making every effort for their 'own' patients. Doctors' self-esteem was found to be delicate due to the uncertain nature of their work; colleagues provide the support doctors need to deliver good care. However, these essential relationships and their cherished connections with patients have disadvantages: reducing doctors' ability to admit to error. On top of this, senior doctors predict a future bereft of professional values - one where medicine is 'just a job'. While the loss of professional identity introduces new risks for patients and doctors, the repercussions of the more self-serving attitudes of younger doctors are unknown. Reconstructing Medical Practice concludes that regulation, despite its recent proliferation, is a clumsy and limited approach to ensuring good care. It presents original and much-needed ideas for ways to rebuild the critical relationship between doctors and the system. By better valuing communicative interactions and workplace relationships, safe and satisfying medical practice can be reconstructed.

Jenny Ozga, Terri Seddon, Thomas S. Popkewitz
R1,579 Discovery Miles 15 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume considers the ways in which educational research is being shaped by policy across the globe. Policy effects on research are increasingly influential, as policies in and beyond education drive the formation of a knowledge-based economy by supporting increased international competitiveness through more effective, evidence-based interventions in schooling, education and training systems. What consequences does this increased steering have for research in education? How do transnational agencies make their influence felt on educational research? How do national systems and traditions of educational research - and relations with policy - respond to these new pressures? What effects does it have on the quality of research and on the freedom of researchers to pursue their own agendas? The 2006 volume of the World Yearbook of Education explores these issues, focusing on three key themes: globalising policy and research in education steering education research in national contexts global-local politics of education research. The 2006 volume has a truly global reach, incorporating transnational policy perspectives from the OECD and the European Commission, alongside national cases from across the world in contrasting contexts that include North and South America, Canada, France, Singapore, China, Russia and New Zealand. The range of contributions reflect how pervasive these developments are, how much is new in this situation and to what extent evidence-based policy pressures on research in education build on past relationships between education and policy. This book considers the impact of the steering processes on the work and identities of individual researchers and considers how research can be organised to play a more active role in the politics of the knowledge economy and learning society.

A Bibliography of Female Economic Thought up to 1940 (Paperback): Kirsten Madden, Michele Pujol, Janet Seiz A Bibliography of Female Economic Thought up to 1940 (Paperback)
Kirsten Madden, Michele Pujol, Janet Seiz
R1,758 Discovery Miles 17 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Contributions to female economic thought have come from prolific scholars, leading social reformers, economic journalists and government officials along with many other women who contributed only one or two works to the field. It is perhaps for this reason that a comprehensive bibliographic collection has failed to appear, until now. This innovative book brings together the most comprehensive collection to date of references to women's economic writing from the 1770s to 1940. It includes thousands of contributions from more than 1,700 women from the UK, the US and many other countries. This bibliography is an important reference work for systematic inquiry into questions of gender and the history of economic thought. This volume is a valuable resource and will interest researchers on women's contributions to economic thought, the sociology of economics, and the lives of female social scientists and activist-authors. With a comprehensive editorial introduction, it fills a long-standing gap and will be greeted warmly by scholars of the history of economic thought and those involved in feminist economics.

Handbook on Gender in Asia (Hardcover): Shirlena Huang, Kanchana N. Ruwanpura Handbook on Gender in Asia (Hardcover)
Shirlena Huang, Kanchana N. Ruwanpura
R5,420 Discovery Miles 54 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Exploring gender as a fundamental factor in the way that lives of individuals, families and societies across Asia are organized, this timely Handbook studies the importance of modernization and globalization for understanding gender in Asia. It brings together a wide range of scholarly perspectives on five critical areas in the field: ageing and health; labour; migrations and mobilities; gender at the margins, and the theory and practice of researching in Asia. Identifying gaps in current research, and using both qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the topic, this volume demonstrates the difference a gendered perspective makes in providing a better understanding of these issues in Asia. Using empirical case studies, contributors highlight the challenges and changes to cultured traditions and practices that surround gendered norms surrounding the societal roles of men and women in Asia. The volume offers fresh, nuanced insights to socio-political currents in Asian countries. This far-reaching collection will be an essential read for scholars in the social sciences interested in gender issues in Asia, human geography, sociology, anthropology, development studies, gender politics; and for NGOs and policy-makers. World Yearbook of Education 2005 - Globalization and Nationalism in Education (Paperback): David Coulby, Evie Zambeta World Yearbook of Education 2005 - Globalization and Nationalism in Education (Paperback)
David Coulby, Evie Zambeta
R479 Discovery Miles 4 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume deals with two major and apparently opposing forces within education and society: globalization and nationalism. Globalization is often considered in economic terms - of continued growth of international trade and a concentration of wealth in corporate hands - yet it also encompasses technological, political and cultural change. The World Yearbook of Education 2005 explores the role of the education sector in our globalized knowledge economy, and considers the political implications of this in terms of monopolarity and the cultural consequences of homogenization and Americanization. The other strand of this study - nationalism - remains a persistent force within education and society in all parts of the world, and this volume examines the extent to which it can fuel conflict at all levels through prejudice and intolerance. Concentrating on the epistemological consequences of nationalism, leading international thinkers examine the extent to which it is reflected in the curricula of schools and universities around the world. Finally, the complex relationship between globalization and nationalism is explored, and contributors explore the part that educational institutions and practices play in forming both agendas. A wide range of perspectives are employed, including post-colonial discourse, classical economics and sociological theory. Nationalism and globalization are both ongoing processes, and this volume makes a case for the central role of education in both - through its potential to influence change and to act as benevolent force in shaping a global community.

The Large International Firm (RLE International Business) (Hardcover): Edith Penrose The Large International Firm (RLE International Business) (Hardcover)
Edith Penrose
R4,449 Discovery Miles 44 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a study of the economics of the large international firm, but is at the same time a study of one of the world's most important industries. International firms face difficult problems in attempting to deal with the conflicts between their own interest as world-wide economic organisations on the one hand, that of the countries in which they operate on the other, and with the conflicts of interest among the countries which are related to the international policies of the firms. The author analyses the underlying problems and points to possible solutions. When it was first published this was the first book by a professional economist to look widely at the economics of the international petroleum industry outside the industrialized countries.

Encyclopedia of Police Science - 2-volume set (Paperback): Jack Raymond Greene Encyclopedia of Police Science - 2-volume set (Paperback)
Jack Raymond Greene
R2,370 Discovery Miles 23 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1996, Garland published the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Police Science, edited by the late William G. Bailey. The work covered all the major sectors of policing in the US. Since then much research has been done on policing issues, and there have been significant changes in techniques and in the American police system. Technological advances have refined and generated methods of investigation. Political events, such as the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States, have created new policing needs while affecting public opinion about law enforcement. These developments appear in the third, expanded edition of the Encyclopedia of Police Science. 380 entries examine the theoretical and practical aspects of law enforcement, discussing past and present practices. The added coverage makes the Encyclopedia more comprehensive with a greater focus on today's policing issues. Also added are themes such as accountability, the culture of police, and the legal framework that affects police decision. New topics discuss recent issues, such as Internet and crime, international terrorism, airport safety, or racial profiling. Entries are contributed by scholars as well as experts working in police departments, crime labs, and various fields of policing.
