Ecosophy and Educational Research for the Anthropocene - Rethinking Research through Relational Psychoanalytic Approaches... Ecosophy and Educational Research for the Anthropocene - Rethinking Research through Relational Psychoanalytic Approaches (Hardcover)
Alysha J. Farrell
R4,142 Discovery Miles 41 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Problematizing the aims of education in the Anthropocene, this text illustrates the value of relational psychoanalytic theory in the study and practice of education amidst the climate crisis. Illustrating how dominant educational theory fails to acknowledge climate precarity and the consequences of living beyond the Earth's carrying capacity, Ecosophy and Educational Research for the Anthropocene calls for a reorientation of scholarship to decentre the human subject. The author discusses the evolution of intersubjective psychoanalysis to make a case for a turn to relational and psychoanalytically informed educational research. Chapters foreground areas for educational researchers to consider in pursuing intersubjective inquiries into the affective dimensions of curriculum and pedagogy to foster an emergence of eco-attunement and ecosophical educational research (EER). By framing an ecosophical approach, this book enables educational leaders, researchers and educators to fulfil their responsibility to engage in educational praxis which is contextually responsive, relationally attuned and recognizant that we cannot be studied apart from our connections to the planet.

Teacher Education Through Uncertainty and Crisis - Towards Sustainable Futures (Hardcover): Terri Seddon, Alexander Kostogriz,... Teacher Education Through Uncertainty and Crisis - Towards Sustainable Futures (Hardcover)
Terri Seddon, Alexander Kostogriz, Joanna Barbousas
R4,129 Discovery Miles 41 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines teacher education at a critical turning point in the neoliberal dispensation that has steered education policy and practice since the 1980s. It examines Australia's teacher education reforms, the 'TEMAG reforms' launched in 2014, and traces their effects on teacher education practice in 2019 and into the challenges, uncertainties and doubts of 2020's entangled health, economic and environmental crises. Combining data-rich insights into policy and professional workspaces and places, with a temporal sensibility, this book probes the limits of neoliberal logics and shows how school- and university-based educators' professionalism sustains the preparation of beginning teachers through school-university partnerships. Teacher Education Through Uncertainty and Crisis explores the relationalities, spatialities and temporalities of teacher education, sketching hopeful innovations, pathways and sustainable futures for teacher professionalism. This book will be of interest to policymakers, teacher educators and other professionals who understand the power of education in an uncertain world.

Ecosystem Services - Key Issues (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Mark Everard Ecosystem Services - Key Issues (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Mark Everard
R4,151 Discovery Miles 41 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Revised and fully updated, this textbook provides a detailed yet accessible introduction to the key aspects of ecosystem services. Ecosystem services is one of the most powerful guiding principles for ecology, biodiversity conservation and the management of natural resources. It provides the basis of assessing the multiple values and services that ecosystems can provide to humankind, including diverse issues such as carbon sequestration, flood control, crop pollination and aesthetic and cultural services. The second edition of Ecosystem Services: Key Issues has been fully revised and updated to address policy and scientific developments, as well as new and emerging issues, such as nature-based solutions, zoonotic diseases and environmental justice. It includes new and updated case studies from across the world and each chapter contains further reading, learning objectives and discussion questions to aid student learning. The book details the historical roots of ecosystem services in the second half of the twentieth century, through initiatives such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, The Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It shows how ecosystem goods and services can be categorised and valued in economic as well as non-monetary terms, while also highlighting some of the difficulties and limitations of valuation techniques. The author describes how themes such as systems thinking, social-ecological resilience and natural capital relate to ecosystem services, and how these can contribute to more sustainable and equitable development. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of ecosystem services, ecology, environmental science, biodiversity conservation, environmental economics, natural resource management and sustainable development. It will also be of use to professionals and policymakers who are looking to integrate ecosystems and their services into their decision making processes.

Culturally Responsive Choral Music Education - What Teachers Can Learn From Nine Students' Experiences in Three Choirs... Culturally Responsive Choral Music Education - What Teachers Can Learn From Nine Students' Experiences in Three Choirs (Paperback)
Julia T. Shaw; Edited by Vicki R. Lind, Constance McKoy
R674 Discovery Miles 6 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Culturally Responsive Choral Music Education visits the classrooms of three ethnically diverse choral teacher-conductors to highlight specific examples of ways that culturally responsive teaching (CRT) can enrich choral music education. Principles of CRT are illustrated in contrasting demographic contexts: a choir serving a sizeable immigrant Hispanic population, a choir with an African American classroom majority, and a choir comprised of students who identify with eighteen distinct ethnicities. Additionally, portraits of nine ethnically diverse students illuminate how CRT shaped their experiences as members of these choral ensembles. Practical recommendations are offered for developing a culturally responsive classroom environment.

Sustainable Action and Motivation - Pathways for Individuals, Institutions, and Humanity (Paperback): Roland Mees Sustainable Action and Motivation - Pathways for Individuals, Institutions, and Humanity (Paperback)
Roland Mees
R1,268 Discovery Miles 12 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sustainable Action and Motivation proposes individual competencies and institutional policies that can help overcome the motivational hurdles that hamper sustainable action. Following the Paris Agreement of 2015 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the political momentum urgently to begin the drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has increased significantly. Affluent, high-income OECD countries are expected to take the lead in the global transition to a low carbon society. Given this, we need a better understanding of the motivational problems that people in affluent countries face with acting sustainably. This book investigates the above questions by analysing three fundamentally different perspectives: individuals and their motivation to act sustainably; institutions who take responsibility for issuing policies that steer us towards taking sustainable action; and humanity, each individual member of which ought to understand his or her non-sustainable behaviour in relation to the continued existence of the collective of human beings. Using theories from empirical psychology and a phenomenological approach to the research, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of practical philosophy, psychology of motivation and environmental psychology, as well as policymakers looking for ways to implement effective policies that encourage pro-environmental behaviour.

Modelling Transitions - Virtues, Vices, Visions of the Future (Paperback): Enayat A. Moallemi, Fjalar J de Haan Modelling Transitions - Virtues, Vices, Visions of the Future (Paperback)
Enayat A. Moallemi, Fjalar J de Haan
R1,297 Discovery Miles 12 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Modelling Transitions shows what computational, formal and data-driven approaches can and could mean for sustainability transitions research, presenting the state-of-the-art and exploring what lies beyond. Featuring contributions from many well-known authors, this book presents the various benefits of modelling for transitions research. More than just taking stock, it also critically examines what modelling of transformative change means and could mean for transitions research and for other disciplines that study societal changes. This includes identifying a variety of approaches currently not part of the portfolios of transitions modellers. Far from only singing praise, critical methodological and philosophical introspection are key aspects of this important book. This book speaks to modellers and non-modellers alike who value the development of robust knowledge on transitions to sustainability, including colleagues in congenial fields. Be they students, researchers or practitioners, everyone interested in transitions should find this book relevant as reference, resource and guide.

Trade and the Environment - Economic, Legal and Policy Perspectives (Hardcover): Alan M. Rugman, John J Kirton, Julie A. Soloway Trade and the Environment - Economic, Legal and Policy Perspectives (Hardcover)
Alan M. Rugman, John J Kirton, Julie A. Soloway
R8,299 Discovery Miles 82 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Trade and the Environment presents the most important published articles and papers which are essential to an understanding of the complex interrelationship between trade and the environment - an area which reflects the increasing concern about the protection of the earth's environment and natural resources. The book examines the subject from three perspectives. The first section offers an economic analysis of the trade and environment relationship, including the problems of cost and the methodological approaches to analyses of trade and environment; and exploration of how international and national trade and environment policies affect each other and an investigation of how firms and corporations adjust their strategies to respond to environmental regulation. The second section, which is devoted to the legal aspects of the conflict between trade and environmental policies, explores the implications of existing international trade agreements for good environmental practice and investigates the effects of national environmental laws on international trade. The final section is concerned with government policy and the way in which national governments construct international 'regimes' which affect the interplay between trade liberators and environmental regulators. Trade and the Environment provides a clear insight into an area of current concern and points to future issues in the rapidly emerging trade and environment regime.

An Environmental History of Ancient Greece and Rome (Hardcover, REV English): Lukas Thommen An Environmental History of Ancient Greece and Rome (Hardcover, REV English)
Lukas Thommen
R1,584 Discovery Miles 15 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In ancient Greece and Rome an ambiguous relationship developed between man and nature, and this decisively determined the manner in which they treated the environment. On the one hand, nature was conceived as a space characterized and inhabited by divine powers, which deserved appropriate respect. On the other, a rationalist view emerged, according to which humans were to subdue nature using their technologies and to dispose of its resources. This book systematically describes the ways in which the Greeks and Romans intervened in the environment and thus traces the history of the tension between the exploitation of resources and the protection of nature, from early Greece to the period of late antiquity. At the same time it analyses the comprehensive opening up of the Mediterranean and the northern frontier regions, both for settlement and for economic activity. The book's level and approach make it highly accessible to students and non-specialists.

From Bioeconomics to Degrowth - Georgescu-Roegen's 'New Economics' in Eight Essays (Hardcover, New): Nicolas... From Bioeconomics to Degrowth - Georgescu-Roegen's 'New Economics' in Eight Essays (Hardcover, New)
Nicolas Georgescu-Roegen; Edited by Mauro Bonaiuti
R4,369 Discovery Miles 43 690 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen's (1906-94) most original contribution is his bioeconomic theory. Based on a profound rethinking of the foundations of neoclassical economics, bioeconomics represents a completely new paradigm compared to both the standard and the Marxist approach. Opening economics to natural sciences led Georgescu-Roegen to point out the bio-physical limits to growth. In the last years of his life, he also criticised the sustainable development paradigm, but his criticism disappeared together with him, only to re-emerge recently, thanks to the research on his archiveand to the interest for his viewpoints within the framework of 'degrowth'. In his last years Georgescu-Roegen intended to publish a text entitled Bioeconomics, as an initial systematic arrangement of this doctrine. This book aims to pick up that project in two ways: first, collecting Goergescu-Roegen's main contributions to bioeconomic theory, some still unpublished, and tackling the principal nubs of the discipline particularly the criticism of sustainable development. Second, recuperating that full multidisciplinarity that represents the profoundest characteristic of the bioeconomic theory. The concluding essay is now considered a cornerstone of the degrowth perspective.

Biofertilizers and Biopesticides in Sustainable Agriculture (Paperback): B. D. Kaushik, Deepak Kumar, MD Shamim Biofertilizers and Biopesticides in Sustainable Agriculture (Paperback)
B. D. Kaushik, Deepak Kumar, MD Shamim
R2,609 Discovery Miles 26 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new volume, Biofertilizers and Biopesticides in Sustainable Agriculture, presents strategies for the management of soil and crop diseases. Microbes have attracted worldwide attention due to their role in disease management and remediation of polluted soils. Taking a sustainable approach, this book explores the means of integrating various microbial management approaches to achieve the desired levels of crop yield under both conventional soils and neglected soils through the use of biopesticides and other botanicals as well as biomolecules. This book also presents a broad and updated view of molecular nitrogen fixation and phosphate-solubilizing and sulfur-transforming microbes for nutrition of crops in relation to the role of metal tolerant microbes in providing protection to plants grown in metal-contaminated soils. The preparation and application of biofertilizers, utilization of household waste materials, and use of genetically modified microorganisms (GMOs) in plant growth and development are also well discussed in the volume.

Epistemic Justice, Mindfulness, and the Environmental Humanities - Reflections on Teaching (Paperback): Janelle Adsit Epistemic Justice, Mindfulness, and the Environmental Humanities - Reflections on Teaching (Paperback)
Janelle Adsit
R1,198 Discovery Miles 11 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Epistemic Justice, Mindfulness, and the Environmental Humanities explores how contemplative pedagogies and mindfulness can be used in the classroom to address epistemic and environmental injustice. In recent years, there has been a groundswell of interest in contemplative pedagogies in higher education, with increasing attention from the environmental sciences, environmental humanities, and sustainability studies. Teachers and writers have demonstrated how mindfulness practices can be a key to anti-oppression and anti-racist efforts, both in and out of the classroom. Not all forms of contemplative pedagogy are suited for this anti-colonial and anti-oppressive resistance, however. Simply adopting mindfulness practices in the classroom is not enough to dislodge and dismantle white supremacy in higher education. Epistemic Justice, Mindfulness, and the Environmental Humanities advocates for mindfulness practices that affirm multiple epistemologies and cultural traditions. Written for educators in the environmental humanities and other related disciplines, the chapters interrogate the western uptake of mindfulness practices and suggest anti-colonial and anti-oppressive methods for bringing mindfulness into the classroom. The chapters also discuss what mindfulness practices have to offer to the pursuit of a culturally relevant pedagogy. This highly applied and practical text will be an insightful read for educators in the environmental humanities and across the liberal arts disciplines.

Indigenous Knowledges and the Sustainable Development Agenda (Paperback): Anders Breidlid, Roy Krovel Indigenous Knowledges and the Sustainable Development Agenda (Paperback)
Anders Breidlid, Roy Krovel
R1,293 Discovery Miles 12 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book discusses the vital importance of including indigenous knowledges in the sustainable development agenda. In the wake of colonialism and imperialism, dialogue between indigenous knowledges and Western epistemology has broken down time and again. However, in recent decades the broader indigenous struggle for rights and recognition has led to a better understanding of indigenous knowledges, and in 2015 the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined the importance of indigenous engagement in contributing to the implementation of the agenda. Drawing on experiences and field work from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe, Indigenous Knowledges and the Sustainable Development Agenda brings together authors who explore social, educational, institutional and ecological sustainability in relation to indigenous knowledges. In doing so, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of the concept of "sustainability", at both national and international levels, from a range of diverse perspectives. As the decolonizing debate gathers pace within mainstream academic discourse, this book offers an important contribution to scholars across development studies, environmental studies, education, and political ecology.
