James Aweya
R4,029 Discovery Miles 40 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This two-volume set focuses on fundamental concepts and design goals (i.e., a switch/router's key features), architectures, and practical applications of switch/routers in IP networks. The discussion includes practical design examples to illustrate how switch/routers are designed and how the key features are implemented. Designing Switch/Routers: Fundamental Concepts, Design Methods, Architectures, and Applications begins by providing an introductory level discussion that covers the functions and architectures of the switch/router. The first book considers the switch/router as a generic Layer 2 and Layer 3 forwarding device without placing emphasis on any particular manufacturer's device. The underlining concepts and design methods are not only positioned to be applicable to this generic switch/router, but also to the typical switch/router seen in the industry. The discussion provides a better insight into the protocols, methods, processes, and tools that go into designing switch/routers. The second volume explains the design and architectural considerations, as well as, the typical processes and steps used to build practical switch/routers. It then discusses the advantages of using Ethernet in today's networks and why Ethernet continues to play a bigger role in Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), and Wide Area Network (WAN) design. This book set provides a discussion of the design of switch/routers and is written in a style to appeal to undergraduate and graduate-level students, engineers, and researchers in the networking and telecoms industry, as well as academics and other industry professionals. The material and discussion are structured in such a way that they could serve as standalone teaching material for networking and telecom courses and/or supplementary material for such courses.

Well-Being Design and Frameworks for Interior Space (Hardcover): Valeria Minucciani, Nilufer Saglar Onay Well-Being Design and Frameworks for Interior Space (Hardcover)
Valeria Minucciani, Nilufer Saglar Onay
R5,031 Discovery Miles 50 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Planners, architects, and designers can have a great impact on living environments and well-being. Well-being is a natural outcome of natural living, but it is important to realize that a real and comprehensive understanding of well-being can only be achieved through the continuity of the concept to all environmental scales starting from the biosphere and leading towards interiors. Since interior space is one of the most important determinants of our everyday experiences, its role in well-being as a conscious construct needs to be the most important concern of spatial design. Well-Being Design and Frameworks for Interior Space is a pivotal reference source that proposes a framework including different dimensions of well-being and that discusses the importance of each dimension through the examination of past and present living environments in an attempt to figure out the appropriate ways of thinking, living, and building that can lead to healthier environments and happier people. Factors discussed throughout the book include the history of the concept of living well, the evolution of well-being with age, the requirements that affect well-being, the potentials of certain design approaches for well-being, the existing environments (such as vernacular structures, heritage buildings) with specific advantages for well-being, changes in well-being requirements, interior environments with different functions (such as schools and home environments), and the intersections of interior design with other design disciplines. This book is ideally designed for architects, interior designers, planners, engineers, administrators, policymakers, researchers, academicians, and students.

From Network Structure to Policy Design in Water Protection - A Comparative Perspective on Micropollutants in the Rhine River... From Network Structure to Policy Design in Water Protection - A Comparative Perspective on Micropollutants in the Rhine River Riparian Countries (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Florence Metz
R3,664 Discovery Miles 36 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The book examines a new concern in water quality policy, namely aquatic micropollutants. Micropollutants are chemicals detected in small concentrations in waterbodies today, originating from pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, or detergents, among others. Since the regulation of micropollutants is a fairly new issue, it has been largely neglected in social sciences. However, the search for appropriate solutions is of high political relevance at both the national and international levels, with many open questions arising that concern the most adequate governance structures and steering mechanisms. Solutions suitable for classical, macro-pollutants, such as nutrients, do not necessarily apply to micropollutants because of the diversity of compounds and sources, and for technical, financial, and societal reasons. The book addresses this knowledge gap by investigating the steering mechanisms at hand and their prospect for problem solving. In this regard, the research provides a systematic depiction and comparison of policy designs in place for the reduction of micropollutants in the Rhine basin. Moreover, the study yields insights into the governance structures in place, into actors' responsibilities and constellations, and policy processes regarding micropollutants. The study is furthermore embedded into broader theoretical questions of policy research. More precisely, this research is a contribution to policy analysis that aims to achieve more optimal policy results by providing for a better understanding of the nature of policy designs and the social mechanisms behind the choice of them. Despite the intrinsic aim of policy analysis at contributing to more optimal policy outcomes, there remains a lack of research regarding analytical tools that enable an ex-ante assessment of policy designs' problem-solving abilities. To explore such a research path, this book proposes a novel index of policy comprehensiveness for quantifying the prospective performance of policy designs in alleviating an underlying policy issue, e.g. reducing pollutants in waters. Furthermore, the book uncovers the social mechanisms behind policymaking and turns to the question: In which social settings is it possible to achieve a comprehensive policy design? Compared to purely micro-level explanations, the advantage of the network approach is that it goes beyond the mere aggregation of policy actors' attributes by taking into consideration actors' interdependencies. In order to take the network approach seriously, the study systematically links the structure of a policy network with comprehensive policy designs. Network concepts, such as coalition structure, interconnectedness, and belief similarity, are employed from policy change research here in order to explore the link between structural network characteristics and comprehensive policy design. By studying how network structures affect policy design, the book critically examines the explanatory value of the network approach.

International Climate Negotiation Factors - Design, Process, Tactics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Wytze Van Der Gaast International Climate Negotiation Factors - Design, Process, Tactics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Wytze Van Der Gaast
R3,444 Discovery Miles 34 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Providing a detailed examination of climate negotiations records since the 1990s, this book shows that, in addition to agreeing on climate policy frameworks, the negotiations process is of crucial importance to success. Shedding light on the dynamics of international climate policymaking, its respective chapters explore key milestones such as the Kyoto Protocol, Marrakech Accords, Cancun Agreement and Doha Framework. The book identifies a minimum of three conditions that need to be fulfilled for successful climate negotiations: the negotiations need to reflect the fact that climate change calls for global solutions; the negotiation process must be flexible, including multiple trajectories and several small steps; and decisive tactical maneuvers need to be made, as much can depend on, for example, personalities and the negotiating atmosphere. With regard to the design of an international climate policy regime, the main challenge presented has been the inability to agree on globally supported greenhouse gas emission reduction measures. The book offers an excellent source of information for researchers, policymakers and advisors alike.

Detecting Ecological Impacts - Concepts and Applications in Coastal Habitats (Hardcover): Russell J. Schmitt, Craig W. Osenberg Detecting Ecological Impacts - Concepts and Applications in Coastal Habitats (Hardcover)
Russell J. Schmitt, Craig W. Osenberg
R3,848 R2,036 Discovery Miles 20 360 Save R1,812 (47%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Detecting Ecological Impacts: Concepts and Applications in Coastal Habitats focuses on crucial aspects of detecting local and regional impacts that result from human activities. Detection and characterization of ecological impacts require scientific approaches that can reliably separate the effects of a specific anthropogenic activity from those of other processes. This fundamental goal is both technically and operationally challenging. Detecting Ecological Impacts is devoted to the conceptual and technical underpinnings that allow for reliable estimates of ecological effects caused by human activities. An international team of scientists focuses on the development and application of scientific tools appropriate for estimating the magnitude and spatial extent of ecological impacts. The contributors also evaluate our current ability to forecast impacts. Some of the scientific, legal, and administrative constraints that impede these critical tasks also are highlighted. Coastal marine habitats are emphasized, but the lessons and insights have general application to all ecological systems.
