Six magical sisters clean the carpets in their big house by flying
them joyfully around the town. Seeing this, the Prince of the
province demands that the sisters teach him how to fly the carpets,
but even though each sister teaches him a different way to fly
them, the Prince never learns. He takes all the carpets to his
palace, leaving the sisters with nothing but old blankets and bath
mats, which the sisters fly with equal joy.
Australian Flower Fairies Address Book Generations of children have
loved Cicely Mary Barker's English Flower Fairy Books - here now
are their Australian cousins. Twenty-six exquisitely detailed
illustrations by well-known artist Elizabeth Alger adorn this
brightly coloured book, featuring the Lilly-Pilly Fairies, the
Wattle Fairies, the Gum Tree Fairies and more. Each picture is
accompanied by a verse, written by nature-inspired gardener, artist
and poet Margaret Thornton. Her three daughters also contributed
poems. The book contains pages for recording the contact details of
friends and family. It is the companion volume to the Australian
Flower Fairies Birthday Book, the Notebook and the Diary.
Having spent ten years fighting in the Trojan War, Odysseus embarks
on his journey back to Ithica. To get there he must deceive a giant
Cyclops, face Poseidon's wrath, escape cannibalism, defeat the
witch-goddess Circe, skirt the land of the Sirens, sail between a
six-headed monster and a raging whirlpool, and escape captivity on
the island of Calypso. But perhaps his biggest threat is his
prolonged absence from home, as 108 suitors are vying for his
wife's hand in marriage. Composed near the end of the eighth
century BC, The Odyssey was intended to be sung by an epic poet.
One of the most impressive elements of the text is that events
depend equally on the choices made by women and serfs as on the
actions of fighting men. The story has had a profound influence on
cultures around the world, so much so, that the word odyssey has
come to refer to an epic voyage in many languages. In this edition
of Samuel Butler's translation, the names of the gods and
characters have been restored from Latin to the original Greek.
This book contains over forty of the best-loved fairy stories,
retold by Flora Annie Steel, and beautifully illustrated by Arthur
Rackham. Favourites such as Jack the Giant-killer, Jack and the
Beanstalk, Dick Whittington, The Three Little Pigs and The Babes in
the Wood are all here among many others, but stories from different
traditions also make their appearance, including The Three Bears
and Little Red Hiding Hood.
A lovely collection of 32 fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm,
translated by L. L. Weedon. Tales are illustrated in black and
white with many coloured plates by various illustrators including
Ada Dennis, E. Stuart Hardy, E. Nister, Arch Webb, G. H. Thompson
and others. Pook Press celebrates the great Golden Age of
Illustration in children's literature. Many of the earliest
children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1850s and
before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook
Press are working to republish these classic works in high quality,
colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works
can delight another generation of children.
