In imperial China, the Yijing (Book of Changes) was not just read as a Confucian classic for moral cultivation, but also put into practice to solve problems of everyday life. To explain why the Yijing was so widely used in China, this volume examines its multiple textual layers, its divinatory practices, its medical uses, and its role in Chinese modernity. Together, the ten chapters demonstrate that the Yijing is indeed a living text used by both the educated elite and the populace to alleviate their fear and anxiety. Contributors are: Andrea Breard, Chang Chia-Feng, Constance A. Cook, Stephane Feuillas, Tze-ki Hon, Liao Hsien-huei, William Matthews, Tao Yingna, Xing Wang, and Zhao Lu.

Living with the Other Side: A Tale of Fairies, Sprites, and Spirits shares stories from the life of author Deborah Mills-tales of how fairies, sprites, and spirit guides brought miracles, peace, joy, abundance into her life. Beginning her tale in early childhood, Mills introduces the Chief, the old Native American who protects and guides her with gentleness while preparing her for things to come. We also meet Grandmother, who is kindly, calm, and sweet with a long pigtail down her back, sharing the comfort and the love only she can give. There is also the spirit of death, Michael-a young, beautiful guide who lets us know that death is a journey, a step into a new place to exist with peace. We go on the path of life where the fairies dance, the sprites gather to share messages, and the spirit guides protect and provide guidance. These wonderful souls are the spirits that teach, guide, and protect us-our friends. Living with the Other Side shows us that having something more on the other side-to dance with the fairies, to sing with the sprites, to walk and talk with the spirits-provides Mills with the confidence, joy, and ability to stand firm in her beliefs as it could for any of us. "This book is a wonderfully inspiring work Deborah's spirit comes through each page and has the effect of renewing ones spirit and faith that we each have a purpose in life and anything is possible." -Laura P.

Want to delve deeper into the concepts that made The Wildwood Tarot wildly popular? This workbook further explores those powerful ancient traditions. Wild Magic invokes the power of the Wildwood - the Green Man and Green Woman, as well as all the living archetypes of the forest, such as Herne the Hunter and Robin-in-the-Hood. Journey across time to the pre-Celtic world where primal forces, in the guise of animal, bird, and fish, roamed free and opened doorways into the otherworld of the Ancestors. With chapters on the Lore of the Wild, the Wheel of the Year, shamanic methods of examining the wild, and meditations designed to enable personal encounters with Wildwood archetypes, as well as newly crafted rituals enabling readers to celebrate festivals such as the Midsummer and Midwinter Solstices, the book takes a fresh and informed look at a set of ancient traditions applied to the present.
This is a hugely entertaining study that goes beyond biography to vividly portray Victorian life in a wider framework."Queen Victoria's Skull" explores the life and thinking of the Edinburgh phrenologist George Combe. Phrenology is a theory which claims to be able to detect personality traits, character and predisposition to criminality on the basis of the shape of the skull. Now dismissed as risible, it was treated with reverence by many Victorians.George Combe was the author of "The Constitution of Man", an ethical treatise that sold over 100,000 copies in Britain and 200,000 copies in America by 1900. The quirkiness of his life and work, and the fact that he befriended and influenced many public figures - from Prince Albert to George Eliot - make for an engaging story. "Queen Victoria's Skull", however, does more than tell the tale of one idiosyncratic individual. By tracing the development of Combe's intellectual interests it provides a prism through which to view Victorian culture, science and politics, covering themes of class, religion, sex, crime, art and the theatre. David Stack has written an entertaining and erudite study of an important, and now neglected, Victorian figure.
To walk among the age-old trees of the wildwood is to journey back in time, to a place of great simplicity and deep understanding. In this re-awakening of the original Greenwood Tarot, Mark Ryan and John Matthews introduce us to the classic forest archetypes of the Green Man and Woman, the Archer, the Hooded Man and the Blasted Oak. Will Worthington's rich and vivid images bring this ancient world to life and make it possible to feel the magic and power of the wildwood. The Wildwood Tarot draws inspiration from pre-Celtic mythology and a belief system steeped in shamanic wisdom and forest lore. Based on the seasonal rhythm and festivals of the ancient year, it connects us with a long-lost world - one that can help us to make sense of our own. |
