Same Sex Relationships - From 'Odious Crime' to 'Gay Marriage' (Hardcover): Stephen Cretney Same Sex Relationships - From 'Odious Crime' to 'Gay Marriage' (Hardcover)
Stephen Cretney
R2,308 R1,846 Discovery Miles 18 460 Save R462 (20%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on the 2005 Oxford Clarendon Lectures in Law, this book deals with the remarkable change in society's attitude to homosexuality over the last half century. Until 1967 homosexual acts were punished by the criminal law and as recently as 1988 Parliament forbade teachers from suggesting that homosexuality was an acceptable family relationship. In 2005 Parliament passed the Civil Partnership Act, which creates a framework in which same-sex couples can have their relationship legally recognised in much the same way as marriage. This book looks at the essentials of the civil partnerships contruct, and asks whether it is really creating an institution of 'gay marriage'? If not, the next question to ask is whether civil partnership can satisfy the demands for equality increasingly being made by the gay community? In the United States, the courts have taken an active and progressive stance, holding that to deny marriage to same sex couples and leave them with mere partnership is to create a 'separate but equal' situation historically associated with the racial discrimination now universally recognised as unconstitutional and morally unjustifiable. However, the political climate has risen to a fever pitch with the current administration's push for constitutional amendment to ban outright gay marriage. In the UK the courts have been less activist, but the potential creation of a Supreme Court raises important questions about the boundaries between the roles of judiciary, the legislature, and government; and whether the judiciary should play a more constitutionally active role than has thus far been traditional?

Andre Gide - The Homosexual Moralist (Hardcover, New): Patrick Pollard Andre Gide - The Homosexual Moralist (Hardcover, New)
Patrick Pollard
R2,489 Discovery Miles 24 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Andre Gide, renowned French essayist, novelist, and playwright, was also a homosexual apologist whose sexuality was central to the whole of his literary and political discourse. This book by Patrick Pollard-the first serious study of homosexuality in Gide's theater and fiction-analyzes his ideas and traces the philosophical, anthropological, scientific, and literary movements that influenced his thought. Pollard begins by discussing Corydon, a defense of pederasty that Gide felt was his most important book. He then provided a historical and analytical survey of books that contributed to Gide's perception of homosexuality, including works on philosophy, social theory, natural history, and medicolegal questions. Pollard goes on to investigate works of fiction-ancient and modern, European and Oriental-in which Gide saw homosexual elements. He concludes by considering the homosexual themes in Gide's own works, analyzing the ways that Gide constantly tried to resolve conflicts between nature and culture, hypocrisy and honesty, corruption and sound moral judgment, anomaly and conformity, and sexual freedom and religious constraint. The book provides a new perspective on Gide's work, a reconstruction of the moral and intellectual climate in Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century, and a substantial contribution to the cultural history of homosexuality.

Modern Families - Stories of Extraordinary Journeys to Kinship (Hardcover): Joshua Gamson Modern Families - Stories of Extraordinary Journeys to Kinship (Hardcover)
Joshua Gamson; Foreword by Melissa Harris-Perry
R2,747 Discovery Miles 27 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A personal, intimate account of the extraordinary ways that today's families are being created. From adoption and assisted reproduction, to gay and straight parents, coupled and single, and multi-parent families, the stories in Modern Families explain how individuals make unconventional families by accessing a broad range of technological, medical and legal choices that expand our definitions of parenting and kinship. Joshua Gamson introduces us to a child with two mothers, made with one mother's egg and the sperm of a man none of them has ever met; another born in Ethiopia, delivered by his natural grandmother to an orphanage after both his parents died in close succession, and then to the arms of his mother, who is raising him solo. These tales are deeply personal and political. The process of forming these families involved jumping tremendous hurdles-social conventions, legal and medical institutions-with heightened intention and inventiveness, within and across multiple inequities and privileges. Yet each of these families, however they came to be, shares the same universal joys that all families share. A companion for all those who choose to navigate the world of modern kinship, Modern Families provides a "fascinating look at the remarkable range of experiences that is broadening the very idea of family" (Booklist).

Female Masculinity (Paperback, Twentieth Anniversary Edition): Jack Halberstam Female Masculinity (Paperback, Twentieth Anniversary Edition)
Jack Halberstam
R878 R741 Discovery Miles 7 410 Save R137 (16%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this quintessential work of queer theory, Jack Halberstam takes aim at the protected status of male masculinity and shows that female masculinity has offered a distinct alternative to it for well over two centuries. Demonstrating how female masculinity is not some bad imitation of virility, but a lively and dramatic staging of hybrid and minority genders, Halberstam catalogs the diversity of gender expressions among masculine women from nineteenth-century pre-lesbian practices to contemporary drag king performances. Through detailed textual readings as well as empirical research, Halberstam uncovers a hidden history of female masculinities while arguing for a more nuanced understanding of gender categories that would incorporate rather than pathologize them. He rereads Anne Lister's diaries and Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness as foundational assertions of female masculine identity; considers the enigma of the stone butch and the politics surrounding butch/femme roles within lesbian communities; and explores issues of transsexuality among "transgender dykes"-lesbians who pass as men-and female-to-male transsexuals who may find the label of "lesbian" a temporary refuge. Halberstam also tackles such topics as women and boxing, butches in Hollywood and independent cinema, and the phenomenon of male impersonators. Featuring a new preface by the author, this twentieth anniversary edition of Female Masculinity remains as insightful, timely, and necessary as ever.

Celluloid Gaze (Paperback, New Ed): Boze Hadleigh Celluloid Gaze (Paperback, New Ed)
Boze Hadleigh
R373 Discovery Miles 3 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1986 as 'Conversations with My Elders', this is a book of interviews with six men of the entertainment world: actors Sal Mineo and Rock Hudson, film directors George Cukor, Luchino Visconti and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and designer, photographer and author Cecil Beaton. Aside from their career successes, they had in common that they were gay and that during their lifetimes they managed to conceal their sexual orientation from the public. What makes these interviews so surprising is the fact that the subjects talk freely and frankly about their lives and their careers, and how their sexuality affected both. In his new preface, Hadleigh reflects on how attitudes towards homosexuality have and have not changed in the 15 years since the book's first publication.

Sports Journalism and Coming Out Stories - Jason Collins and Michael Sam (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): William P. Cassidy Sports Journalism and Coming Out Stories - Jason Collins and Michael Sam (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
William P. Cassidy
R1,727 Discovery Miles 17 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines how sports journalists covered the historic coming out stories of National Basketball Association (NBA) veteran Jason Collins and football All-American Michael Sam in the context of sports' "toy department" reputation as a field whose standards are often criticized as lacking in rigor and depth compared to other forms of journalism. Employing a media sociology approach, reporting about Collins and Sam is addressed in the book via three content analysis studies and interviews with two prominent sports journalists. An overview of other pertinent research is provided along with a detailed account of both athletes' stories. This work should appeal to readers interested in sports journalism, the role of sport in society, and media coverage of gay professional athletes.

Coming Out in College - The Struggle for a Queer Identity (Hardcover): Robert Rhoads Coming Out in College - The Struggle for a Queer Identity (Hardcover)
Robert Rhoads
R2,909 Discovery Miles 29 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Coming out is the process of acknowledging same-sex attractions to oneself and to others. It is both a personal and a public process. For many gay and bisexual students, college marks a pivotal point where for the first time they feel free to explore their same-sex attractions. This book is about the struggles students face in coming out. The focus is twofold: the experiences individuals face in coming to terms with their sexual identity and the process of developing a group identity. The development of a group identity involves a degree of political investment. For some students, becoming political means adopting a queer persona. As one student noted, Queer is kind of an in your face' attitude toward heterosexism and homophobia. A primary focus of this book revolves around the notion of queer identity and how students engage as cultural workers seeking both campus and societal change.

Jonathan Loved David - Manly Love in the Bible and the Hermeneutics of Sex (Hardcover, New): Anthony Heacock Jonathan Loved David - Manly Love in the Bible and the Hermeneutics of Sex (Hardcover, New)
Anthony Heacock
R2,217 Discovery Miles 22 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The relationship between the Hebrew heroes David and Jonathan has caught the attention of popular and scholarly writers alike. Yet there is little agreement about the nature of this relationship that speaks of a love between two men that 'surpasses the love of a man for a woman' (2 Sam. 1.26). Weighing the arguments of scholars including Nissinen, Stone and Zehnder, Heacock produces a meta-critical analysis of the many interpretations of the relationship between David and Jonathan, identifying three dominant readings: the traditional political-theological interpretation, the homoerotic interpretation, and the homosocial interpretation. After outlining the three interpretive approaches, Heacock considers the evidence cited to support each: namely, themes in the David and Jonathan narrative and related biblical texts, ancient political treaties, laws pertaining to homogenital behaviour in the ancient Mediterranean world, and the heroic tales of the Gilgamesh Epic and Homer's Iliad. By applying recent epistemological shifts in knowledge as developed in the interdisciplinary fields of sexuality studies, queer studies and ancient studies, Heacock emphasizes the inescapability of the modern reader's cultural context when reading the narrative, particularly the influence of modern discourses of sexuality. Rather than suggest an alternative historical reading, Heacock turns the debate on its head by abandoning claims to historical veracity and embracing the input of the contemporary queer reader. Using queer theory and reader-response criticism, he offers a reading of the relationship between David and Jonathan through the lens of contemporary gay male friendships. This queer reading not only celebrates manly love in its numerous forms, but also adds a self-critical voice to the discussion that exposes the heteronormative assumptions underlying the questions often asked of the narrative.

Offering queer analyses of paintings by Caravaggio and Puccini and films by OEzpetek, Amelio, and Grimaldi, Champagne argues that Italian masculinity has often been articulated through melodrama. Wide in scope and multidisciplinary in approach, this much-needed study shows the vital role of affect for both Italian history and masculinity studies.

Male Homosexualities and World Religions (Hardcover): P. Hurteau Male Homosexualities and World Religions (Hardcover)
P. Hurteau
R2,063 Discovery Miles 20 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During the last 25 years, homosexuality has played an important role in public debates in Western societies. With globalization, the civil protection of gay rights is spreading rapidly outside the Northern hemisphere and many non-Christian religious traditions are taking public positions on the issues. Favoring a dialogue among various religious systems and an in-depth review of their positions, Pierre Hurteau offers readers new insights into how each of the traditions studied - Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Afro-American religions - articulates its own regulatory mechanisms of male sexuality in general, and homosexuality. Moving away from a Eurocentric view, this book reminds readers that sites of non-heterosexual identity are multiple.

Men's Bodies, Men's Gods explores the intersection of body, religion, and culture from the specific perspective of male identities.

How are male bodies constructed in different historical periods and contexts? How do race, ethnicity, and sexual preference impact on the intersection of male bodies and religious identity? Does Christianity provide models to cope with the aging and ailing male body? Does it provide models for intimacy between men and women? Between men and men? And, how do men reflect the carnal dimensions of power, abuse, and justice?

The Sexuality of Migration - Border Crossings and Mexican Immigrant Men (Hardcover): Lionel Cantu The Sexuality of Migration - Border Crossings and Mexican Immigrant Men (Hardcover)
Lionel Cantu; Edited by Nancy A. Naples, Salvador Vidal-Ortiz
R2,752 Discovery Miles 27 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Winner of the 2010 Distinguished Book Award from the American Sociological Association, Sociology of Sexualities Section Winner of the 2010 Distinguished Book Award in Latino Studies Honorable Mention from the Latin American Studies Association

The Sexuality of Migration provides an innovative study of the experiences of Mexican men who have same sex with men and who have migrated to the United States.

Until recently, immigration scholars have left out the experiences of gays and lesbians. In fact, the topic of sexuality has only recently been addressed in the literature on immigration. The Sexuality of Migration makes significant connections among sexuality, state institutions, and global economic relations. Cantu; situates his analysis within the history of Mexican immigration and offers a broad understanding of diverse migratory experiences ranging from recent gay asylum seekers to an assessment of gay tourism in Mexico. Cantu uses a variety of methods including archival research, interviews, and ethnographic research to explore the range of experiences of Mexican men who have sex with men and the political economy of sexuality and immigration. His primary research site is the greater Los Angeles area, where he interviewed many immigrant men and participated in organizations and community activities alongside his informants.

Sure to fill gaps in the field, The Sexuality of Migration simultaneously complicates a fixed notion of sexual identity and explores the complex factors that influence immigration and migration experiences.

Queer Argentina - Movement Towards the Closet in a Global Time (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Matthew J Edwards Queer Argentina - Movement Towards the Closet in a Global Time (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Matthew J Edwards
R2,507 Discovery Miles 25 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Through insightful, high-paced commentary this book directs attention south, towards Argentina. Current events, political debates, and the cultural production of artists, authors and public figures, including Cesar Aira, Maria Moreno, Naty Menstrual and Copi, among others, provide case studies where heterosexual social models are rejected and, in their place, queer frameworks become the preferred model for living differently. Queer Argentina traces the movements of today's marginalized communities as they pass through and choose to remain within the closet: a space that is emblematic of collective struggles in silence and community formation outside the (hetero)norm.

Oedipal Rejection - Echoes in the Relationships of Gay Men (Hardcover, New): Scott Harms Rose Oedipal Rejection - Echoes in the Relationships of Gay Men (Hardcover, New)
Scott Harms Rose
R2,870 Discovery Miles 28 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Scott Harms Rose takes up questions about intimacy among gay men, which even in these post-postmodern times is not a well-traveled subject ... The exploration of the subjects' sense of masculinity, and of their relationships with their fathers and with romantic partners in adulthood, sheds light on the interplay of identity and relationship as it plays out for gay men in a heterosexist environment ... As truly good clinical and theoretical work usually does, it also calls to mind the various experiences of gender and intimate relations across the spectrums of orientation, desire, identification, and biological sex." - Dr. Paul E. Lynch, Instructor in Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine
"Scott Harms Rose has given us a deeply moving account of the ways in which inner experience and outer realities shape the emergence of self and the course of relational life in gay men. His case studies are carefully informed by his experience as a clinician as well as a rich appreciation of the object relations tradition and empirical study in contemporary psychoanalysis. His renderings of persons and lives deepen our understanding of vulnerabilities across the course of development and enlarge our appreciation of essential concerns in the therapeutic endeavor. This work belongs to that rare category of book that promises to engage theoreticians, researchers, and psychotherapists alike." - William Borden, Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Service Administration and Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Chicago
"If you want to gain a sense of what it is like to read this book, think of Eugene O'Neill's 'Long Days Journey Into Night' or Miller's 'Death of a Salesman'. For Rose's case studies--the core of this deeply moving study of the life of homosexual men--have a painful accuracy to them. Rose's work is ostensibly a study of homosexuality and his review of the literature is thorough and his discussion of his findings clinically illuminating. It is also a book about fathers and sons and in this respect it helps us to see some homosexualities in a universal context. A fine book." - Christopher Bollas, author of The Shadow of the Object: Psychoanalysis of the Unthought Known, Cracking Up, and Being a Character.
