What Will We Do? - Preparing a School Community to Cope with Crises (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Robert Stevenson What Will We Do? - Preparing a School Community to Cope with Crises (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Robert Stevenson
R2,529 Discovery Miles 25 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The second edition of ""What Will We Do? Preparing A School Community to Cope With Crises"" is a guidebook for educators and parents who wish to understand the importance of both pre- and post-intervention programs in our schools to assist all parties in coping with crises that arise. The book examines the scope and effects (including the potential benefits and possible risks) of programs that target such issues as loss, illness, death, grief, war, and violence. It presents specific steps that can be taken to help prepare a school community to cope with possible future crises. Today's news has shown us with dramatic effect that a crisis can occur at any time, often without warning. Educators and parents must work together if they wish to help young people, and each other, when such a crisis occurs. What Will We Do? is a major step in that direction.

Teacher's Guide to Anger Management (Paperback): Paul Blum Teacher's Guide to Anger Management (Paperback)
Paul Blum
R1,022 Discovery Miles 10 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As schools are making efforts to include children with Emotional and Behavioural problems teachers are having to deal with angry and violent pupils on a daily basis. In Paul Blum's latest book he offers a recognisable, blunt and truthful account of widespread and quite horrendous problems affecting teachers today and offers practical strategies and solutions. He provides basic day-to-day guidance as well as help for the longer term PSHE planning for schools, based on his own adaptation of the highly successful 'Everyman' project.

Issues discussed include a practical survey for teachers on the types of incidents they have to deal with, where anger comes from, the problems that anger causes and strategies which can be used to help individual pupils.

A teacher's inability to deal with difficult pupils can affect their professional and personal life, as well as their ability to successfully teach all their pupils. It is therefore essential they have guidance on this subject.

Handbook of Research Design in Mathematics and Science Education (Hardcover): Anthony Edward Kelly, Richard A. Lesh Handbook of Research Design in Mathematics and Science Education (Hardcover)
Anthony Edward Kelly, Richard A. Lesh
R8,132 Discovery Miles 81 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Handbook of Research Design in Mathematics and Science Education is based on results from an NSF-supported project (REC 9450510) aimed at clarifying the nature of principles that govern the effective use of emerging new research designs in mathematics and science education. A primary goal is to describe several of the most important types of research designs that: * have been pioneered recently by mathematics and science educators; * have distinctive characteristics when they are used in projects that focus on mathematics and science education; and * have proven to be especially productive for investigating the kinds of complex, interacting, and adapting systems that underlie the development of mathematics or science students and teachers, or for the development, dissemination, and implementation of innovative programs of mathematics or science instruction. The volume emphasizes research designs that are intended to radically increase the relevance of research to practice, often by involving practitioners in the identification and formulation of the problems to be addressed or in other key roles in the research process. Examples of such research designs include teaching experiments, clinical interviews, analyses of videotapes, action research studies, ethnographic observations, software development studies (or curricula development studies, more generally), and computer modeling studies. This book's second goal is to begin discussions about the nature of appropriate and productive criteria for assessing (and increasing) the quality of research proposals, projects, or publications that are based on the preceding kind of research designs. A final objective is to describe such guidelines in forms that will be useful to graduate students and others who are novices to the fields of mathematics or science education research. The NSF-supported project from which this book developed involved a series of mini conferences in which leading researchers in mathematics and science education developed detailed specifications for the book, and planned and revised chapters to be included. Chapters were also field tested and revised during a series of doctoral research seminars that were sponsored by the University of Wisconsin's OERI-supported National Center for Improving Student Learning and Achievement in Mathematics and Science. In these seminars, computer-based videoconferencing and www-based discussion groups were used to create interactions in which authors of potential chapters served as "guest discussion leaders" responding to questions and comments from doctoral students and faculty members representing more than a dozen leading research universities throughout the USA and abroad. A Web site with additional resource materials related to this book can be found at http://www.soe.purdue.edu/smsc/lesh/ This internet site includes directions for enrolling in seminars, participating in ongoing discussion groups, and submitting or downloading resources which range from videotapes and transcripts, to assessment instruments or theory-based software, to publications or data samples related to the research designs being discussed.

Explore the challenges, opportunities, and pitfalls of the inclusion of students with disabilities in your classroom Exciting, complex, and challenging shifts in American education are occurring today. First, schools are moving to embrace student diversity and accommodate the classroom experience to support diverse ways of organizing students for learning. Second, teachers are moving away from a traditional didactic instructional mode and embracing a facilitator role that encourages creating innovative classroom learning opportunities. Third, there is a shift from the view of the school as providing educational and psychoeducational services for students to providing educational supports for learning. Coinciding with these changes is the growing movement in special education that enourages full inclusion of students with special needs. This is a far cry from the exclusionary and separatist movements of special education less than twenty years ago. Now American education is facing the challenging situation of working with students with disabilities in the regular classroom.Inclusion Practices with Special Needs Students provides a much needed overview of the issues faced by educators committed to understanding how to best serve children with disabilities in schools. Inclusion Practices with Special Needs Students: Theory, Research, and Application provides an overview of the origins, evolution, and recent developments regarding the inclusion of students with disabilities into general education classrooms. The book critically challenges the overriding assumptions that support the philosophy of inclusion with a balanced presentation or research and theory that both supports and raises questions about the viability of this practice. The contributors are authorities in their respective areas of inclusionary practices. Some of the issues you will explore in Inclusion Practices with Special Needs Students are: political, fiscal, and legal events that have shaped inclusion practices implications for school psychologists handling students with serious emotional, behavioral, or developmental problems remaining in regular education agenda for future research priorities for research, training, and policy reform Inclusion Practices with Special Needs Students addresses practical, psychoeducational, philosophical, legal, ethical, and financial issues surrounding the inclusionary initiative in special education.
