Empire's Proxy - American Literature and U.S. Imperialism in the Philippines (Paperback): Meg Wesling Empire's Proxy - American Literature and U.S. Imperialism in the Philippines (Paperback)
Meg Wesling
R635 Discovery Miles 6 350 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series In the late nineteenth century, American teachers descended on the Philippines, which had been newly purchased by the U.S. at the end of the Spanish-American War. Motivated by President McKinley's project of "benevolent assimilation," they established a school system that centered on English language and American literature to advance the superiority of the Anglo-Saxon tradition, which was held up as justification for the U.S.'s civilizing mission and offered as a promise of moral uplift and political advancement. Meanwhile, on American soil, the field of American literature was just being developed and fundamentally, though invisibly, defined by this new, extraterritorial expansion. Drawing on a wealth of material, including historical records, governmental documents from the War Department and the Bureau of Insular Affairs, curriculum guides, memoirs of American teachers in the Philippines, and 19th century literature, Meg Wesling not only links empire with education, but also demonstrates that the rearticulation of American literary studies through the imperial occupation in the Philippines served to actually define and strengthen the field. Empire's Proxy boldly argues that the practical and ideological work of colonial dominance figured into the emergence of the field of American literature, and that the consolidation of a canon of American literature was intertwined with the administrative and intellectual tasks of colonial management.

In The Student Mindset: A 30-item toolkit for anyone learning anything, Steve Oakes and Martin Griffin provide clear, effective and engaging tools designed to help students plan, organise and execute successful learning. Successful students find a way to succeed. They get the results they want. And they achieve this not by superior ability, but by sticking to habits, routines and strategies that deliver those results. By cutting through the noise surrounding academic success and character development, bestselling authors Steve Oakes and Martin Griffin have identified the five key traits and behaviours that all students need in order to achieve their goals: vision, effort, systems, practice and attitude (VESPA). These characteristics beat cognition hands down, and in The Student Mindset Steve and Martin provide a ready-made series of study strategies, approaches and tactics designed to nurture these qualities and transform your motivation, commitment and productivity. The book's thirty activities, while categorised thematically under the VESPA umbrella, have been organised around six key phases of learning so that you can recognise which phase you're in before choosing from the range of tools and techniques to help you get through it. The six co-existing key phases are: preparation; starting study; collecting and shaping; adapting, testing and performing; flow and feedback; and dealing with the dip. At each phase you'll experience challenges and discover new ways of working, and this book's activities have been designed to help you gain control and become a better learner by sharing workload management tactics and revision strategies associated with calm, purposeful study and ultimately getting good results. These tools include a range of effective prioritisation, stress reduction, procrastination-busting and mindset development approaches all neatly packaged into this outstanding practical guide to becoming a successful and confident student. Suitable for all students. Shortlisted for the Non Obvious Book Award.

Teaching Britain - Elementary Teachers and the State of the Everyday, 1846-1906 (Hardcover): Christopher Bischof Teaching Britain - Elementary Teachers and the State of the Everyday, 1846-1906 (Hardcover)
Christopher Bischof
R1,784 Discovery Miles 17 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Teaching Britain examines teachers as key agents in the production of social knowledge. Teachers in nineteenth century Britain claimed intimate knowledge of everyday life among the poor and working class at home, and non-white subjects abroad. They mobilized their knowledge in a wide range of media, from accounts of local happenings in their schools' official log books to travel narratives based on summer trips around Britain and the wider world. Teachers also obsessively narrated and reflected on their own careers. Through these stories and the work they did every day, teachers imagined and helped to enact new models of professionalism, attitudes towards poverty and social mobility, ways of thinking about race and empire, and roles for the state. As highly visible agents of the state and beneficiaries of new state-funded opportunities, teachers also represented the largesse and the reach of the liberal state - but also the limits of both.

Recent years have seen amateur personal stories, focusing on Ğme, flourish on social networking sites and in digital storytelling workshops. The resulting digital stories could be called Ğmediatized stories. This book deals with these self-representational stories, aiming to understand the transformations in the age-old practice of storytelling that have become possible with the new, digital media. Its approach is interdisciplinary, exploring how the mediation or mediatization processes of digital storytelling can be grasped and offering a sociological perspective of media studies and a socio-cultural take of the educational sciences. Aesthetic and literary perspectives on narration as well as questioning from an informatics perspective are also included.

This book is an invitation to reflect on anything concerning culture, and especially its institutionalized form of education. It aims to share with readers any data shaped by place and time that concerns education. The content of this interesting and informative manuscript is an expansive overview of the evolution of education, starting from the ancient era all the way to present. It includes the work of renowned theorists, researchers, and authors and highlights the epistemological orientations of pedagogy and pedagogical trends over time, demonstrating the breadth and depth of education that certainly cannot be a mere set of techniques. The approach of the terms "upbringing", "education" and "pedagogy" is at the heart of this book/guide for every spiritual man. The purpose of this work is the dissemination of pedagogical values and concerns that, as evidenced by the approach of great pedagogues, do not substantially differ from one country to another. This indeed is the hallmark of classic works, particularly works related to the humanitarian values. In difficult times, we must all turn to defend values human values which should permeate education. Modern society presents obvious signs of crisis in the global context, and this is why modern humanity has ceased to be a purpose. This work is faced with constant challenges in the education sector and raises the concern about the progress of education and its future. It is a necessity and a masterpiece that can be shared with various audiences, directly or indirectly related to the theory and practice of pedagogy. As aptly noted by Dostoevsky in his work "The Basement", if man seeks to remain human and not a "piano key", he must show consistency in human capacity. The culture and institutionalized forms, dissemination of pedagogical values are the one and only answer, the single orientation.

Tom Rankin, Melinda Whong
R2,226 Discovery Miles 22 260 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

Traditionally, there has been a disconnect between theoretical linguistics and pedagogical teacher training. This book seeks to bridge that gap. Using engaging examples from a wide variety of languages, it provides an innovative overview of linguistic theory and language acquisition research for readers with a background in education and teacher training, and without specialist knowledge of the field. The authors draw on a range of research to ground ideas about grammar pedagogy, presenting the notion of Virtual Grammar as an accessible label for unifying the complexity of linguistics. Organised thematically, the book includes helpful 'Case in point' examples throughout the text, to illustrate specific grammar points, and step-by-step training in linguistic methods, such as how to analyse examples, which educators can apply to their own teaching contexts. Through enriching language teachers' understanding of linguistic features, the book fosters a different perspective on grammar for educators.

SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP

In Sustainable Leadership, Andy Hargreaves and Dean Fink address one of the most important and often neglected aspects of leadership: sustainability. The authors set out a compelling and original framework of seven principles for sustainable leadership characterized by Depth of learning and real achievement rather than superficially tested performance; Length of impact over the long haul, beyond individual leaders, through effectively managed succession; Breadth of influence, where leadership becomes a distributed responsibility; Justice in ensuring that leadership actions do no harm to and actively benefit students in other schools; Diversity that replaces standardization and alignment with diversity and cohesion; Resourcefulness that conserves and renews leaders' energy and doesn't burn them out; and Conservation that builds on the best of the past to create an even better future.

This book is a volume in the Jossey-Bass Leadership Library in Education--a series designed to meet the demand for new ideas and insights about leadership in schools.

"What a pleasure it is to read a book that discusses education and schooling within the context of the natural and human environment that shapes them. In straightforward language, the authors teach us how to sustain educational renewal without sidestepping a powerful truth: things left ill- or unattended deteriorate."
--John I. Goodlad, president, Institute for Educational Inquiry, Seattle, Washington

"This book makes a deep impression because it is both timely and powerful. Andy Hargreaves and Dean Fink write with clarity and passion about the need not only to develop leadership but to make itsustainable. This is leadership for the long term not just the immediate, for all schools not just for some."
--Steve Munby, executive director, UK National College for School Leadership

Global Exchanges provides a wide-ranging overview of this underresearched topic, examining the scope and scale of organized exchanges around the globe through the twentieth century. In doing so it dramatically reveals the true extent of organized exchange and its essential contribution to the formation of global networks so often taken for granted today.
