Dr. Zhao has assembled the top experts in the field of urology to
present state-of-the-art clinical reviews devoted to Male Urethral
Reconstruction and the Management of Urethral Stricture Disease.
The issue is divided into three sections, with focus on evlaluation
and follow up, urethroplasty technique, and conditions affecting
outcomes. Authors have specifically addressed the following topics:
Definition of successful treatment and optimal follow up in
urethral strictures; Cost analyses for evaluation and treatment of
urethral strictures; Sexual dysfunction after urethroplasty;
Endoscopic treatment of urethral stricture; Endoscopic treatment
for urethral stenosis; Patient selection for urethroplasty
technique: EPA vs Graft; Effect of graft location in urethroplasty;
Non-transecting urethroplasty; Urethroplasty for panurethral
urethral stricture; Use of alternative graft material in
urethroplasty; Effect of Lichen Sclerosis on success of
urethroplasty; Treatment of radiation induced urethral strictures;
Effect of artificial urethral sphincters on strictures; Urethral
strictures after transgender surgery; and Management of urethral
strictures after hypospadias repair. Readers will come away with
the current clinical diagnosis and management strategies that they
can employ immediately.
Bleeding is a major factor that hinders visualization in head and
neck surgery and is a risk factor for intraoperative complications
and perioperative morbidity. Endoscopic approaches also pose
significant technical challenges to managing expected
intraoperative bleeding and vascular injury. The approach for this
publication in Otolaryngologic Clinics is to provide clinically
relevant information in a problem-based manner that encompasses
assessment to identify patients with a high risk for vascular
complications, pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative
strategies to manage expected bleeding and major vessel injury
during endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery for inflammatory and
neoplastic diseases. Clinically relevant anatomy, physiology,
pharmacology, and surgical and interventional radiology techniques
to manage bleeding are outlined and an algorithm for management of
major vessel injury such as internal carotid artery injury is
presented. Because skull base surgery is generally undertaken as a
team approach, this information is relevant to the subspecialized
ENT surgeon from rhinology or head and neck specializations, to
neurosurgeons, to interventional radiologists, and to
neurophysiologists who monitors intraoperative cerebral and cranial
nerve activity for these operations. Carl Snyderman leads this
issue with Harshita Pant and has composed topics and assembled an
expert group of practitioners to provide information. The reader
will find this a novel, focused, and indispensable resource on all
issues of hemostatis in head and neck surgery.
Each year, Advances in Surgery reviews the most current practices
in general surgery. A distinguished editorial board, headed by Dr.
John Cameron, identifies key areas of major progress and
controversy and invites preeminent specialists to contribute
original articles devoted to these topics. These insightful
overviews in general surgery bring concepts to a clinical level and
explore their everyday impact on patient care.
The Year Book of Surgery brings you abstracts of the articles that
reported the year's breakthrough developments in surgery, carefully
selected from more than 500 journals worldwide. Expert commentaries
evaluate the clinical importance of each article and discuss its
application to your practice. There's no faster or easier way to
stay informed! The Year Book of Surgery is published annually in
September, and includes topics such as: Trauma; Burns; Critical
Care; Transplantation; Surgical Infection; Would Healing; Oncology;
Vascular Surgery; and General Thoracic Surgery.
Written by recognized dental implant surgery experts Marco Rinaldi,
Scott Ganz, and Angelo Mottola, Computer-Guided Applications for
Dental Implants, Bone Grafting, and Reconstructive Surgery is the
first text to provide state-of-the-art information on procedures
and techniques used in guided dental implant surgery and bone
grafting. It begins with the basic principles of guided dental
implants including anatomical obstacles, pathologies, and
pharmacological management of patients, and then uses a templated,
atlas format to discuss clinical case studies. With a companion
website includes videos demonstrating surgical procedures, this
text makes it easier for the entire surgical team to share in the
diagnosis and treatment planning for patients receiving implants.
Coverage of computer-guided surgery from treatment planning to
recovery includes a combination of actual 3-D computed imagery and
clinical photos to clearly demonstrate implant surgeries. Bone
grafting protocols address 3-D evaluation of bone density and the
use of bone grafts to augment bone volume prior to dental implant
surgery. 40 case studies include pre- and post-operative
considerations as well as the description of the surgical
procedure, using high-quality clinical photos as well as CT and 3-D
images to clearly illustrate every guided-implant challenge. Over
1,800 full-color images include pre-, intra-, and post-operative
photographs, showing pathologies, procedures, and outcomes. Expert,
authoritative authors provide guidance based upon extensive
experience with current techniques as well as the latest
technological advances in guided-implant surgery. A companion
website includes 10 video clips that are linked to selected
clinical cases in the text. Digital book formats supplement the
print book, making this reference easy to access on iPads, tablets,
e-readers, and smart phones.
The book is divided into three sections: The first section covers
basic materials (from choice of suture materials to why powdered
gloves can cause latex allergy), instruments (such as why scissors
are right or left handed) and basic techniques (for example, how to
deliberately tie a slip knot and how to avoid doing so
accidentally!). The second section covers local anaesthetic agents
and techniques. The third section describes the most commonly
performed operations and the complications that may be encountered
including how to avoid and how to deal with them. There are also
chapters that deal with the highly important but often neglected
topics of biometry and orbital and lens implant biomaterials and
design. Throughout, the scientific basis has been emphasized where
possible. Professionals who work with ophthalmic patients such as
nursing staff and optometrists will also find a clear description
of the commonly performed procedures to be of interest. * an
easy-to-use book, rectifying any immediate gaps in surgical
knowledge * a highly practical text which covers everything that
the ophthalmic trainee needs to know * beautifully illustrated
text, covering all the basic procedures from anesthesia to
instruments, wounds and their aftercare to the most commonly
performed ophthalmic operations
According to popular belief, technical skill is far more important
for surgeons than thoughtful deliberation. Nothing could be further
from the truth. Although surgeons must sometimes make decisions
rapidly on the basis of incomplete evidence and must respond to
unexpected catastrophes in the operating room rapidly, those events
are intermittent - most of the time surgeons deliberate on
diagnostic problems and thoughtfully manage postoperative care,
which is often intellectually challenging. The relationship of
surgeons with their patients is, in a real sense, far more intimate
and trusting than that of any other professional, a claim that is
supported by the fact that patients surrender their bodies to their
surgeons in a state of total helplessness and vulnerability when
they undergo anesthesia. Because of that responsibility, no other
professional group has a greater sense of dedication to the welfare
of their patients than surgeons. Surgical culture is deeply steeped
in ethics, and surgeons confront and resolve ethical dilemmas as
much or more than most other professionals, although they often may
not recognize the situations they resolve are problems in ethics -
they are just part of the daily routine. This book is a compendium
of articles from the recent surgical literature that address
ethical issues chosen by surgeons because they are controversial
and pertinent to the practice of surgery. The reader will not find
a great deal of sophisticated dissection of fine philosophical
distinctions in these discussions of ethical conflicts and
controversies in surgery. Instead, they will discover differing
viewpoints from thoughtful essayists, mostly surgeons, whose feet
are firmly in contact with the ground and who have extensive
experience in the real world of surgery, medicine, and law.
