This unique, step-by-step guide offers a comprehensive exploration of burnout and physician wellbeing, a vital issue that steadily has become widely discussed in the professional and mainstream press. More than twenty chapter authors contribute to this multidimensional volume, including physicians, psychologists, researchers, healthcare administrators, chaplains, professional coaches, and counselors. Section one of the book establishes context, provides a brief overview of the phenomenon of physician burnout, establishes its validity, and makes a case for the reason it has emerged as a critical issue in American healthcare. Section two provides a rationale for healthcare institutions (hospitals, physician groups, medical associations) to make a commitment to physician wholeness, while section three then starts the process of delineating a step-by-step curriculum to address the dilemma, providing additional detail and personal experience direct from the frontlines of combatting burnout. Section four focuses on developing and sustaining a healthy professional culture that is aligned with the mission of the organization, and section five addresses the spiritual component of physician wholeness, Section six concludes the book with two personal essays that poignantly express the nature of two common experiences affecting physicians that require uncommon insight, patience, courage. Transforming the Heart of Practice is a major contribution to the literature and will serve as an invaluable resource for anyone concerned with addressing this crisis in American healthcare.

The purpose of this title is to provide a basis for tutors from which to teach undergraduate medical students. It is not intended to be a comprehensive work on paediatric surgery or to cover all the opinions on the subject, but rather to be a practical guide to what the general practitioner should know about paediatric surgery.
A guide to surgery, designed mainly for undergraduate students, giving an overview of the subject for junior registrars and providing a resource for general practioners in their continuing medical education programmes.

Tips, tricks and avoidance of common pitfalls guide candidates to success in their examinations, and the book gives particular attention to areas of the syllabus that trainees find particularly challenging. The concise, evidence-based chapters are written by practising paediatric orthopaedic surgeons to reflect the core knowledge expected of a newly appointed consultant. This is the essential revision guide for the paediatric component of the FRCS (Tr and Orth) and other orthopaedic examinations.
This book is intended as a one-stop reference that will assist primary care community dentists, sports physicians, athletic trainers, and emergency room physicians in meeting the needs of athletes when managing facial and dental trauma and sports-related oral diseases. The opening chapters provide a complete review of sports-related dentoalveolar trauma, with coverage of emergent care, the role of endodontics, surgical issues, and restorative considerations. Prevention of dental trauma by means of mouthguards is then examined, with attention to materials and design, public policy concerning the use of mouthguards, and the role of mouthguards in relation to the ever more pressing issue of concussion in sport. Dental erosion in athletes, for example due to energy drinks, is discussed, as are the possible sequelae of use of spit tobacco, performance-enhancing drugs, and ergogenic aids. The new topic of the potential value of dental appliances in enhancing sports performance is also addressed. The book concludes by reviewing the role of the dentist within the multidisciplinary sports medicine team. The text is supported by an abundance of informative illustrations.
This book provides clear guidance on how to achieve excellent functional results and avoid failures when performing cystectomy and orthotopic bladder substitution. The opening sections present helpful checklists relating to patient selection, preoperative management, the procedures themselves, intraoperative measures, postoperative management, and actions to be taken in the event of various symptoms and complications. The remainder of the book focuses in detail on a variety of specific points of interest such as how and why to attempt a nerve-sparing cystectomy, the role of pelvic lymph node dissection, physical and physiological considerations relevant to reservoir construction, metabolic consequences of the incorporation of bowel into the urinary tract, preservation of renal function, and quality of life issues. The information provided may not only be instrumental to urologists, but also to specialized health care professionals, as well as the concerned patients.

This book contains a compilation of high-yield, at-a-glance summaries in quick reference format for various topics that are frequently encountered by pathologists in the daily practice or on the boards. The focus is not organ-based histologic criteria, but rather everything else that goes into pathologic diagnoses but is difficult to keep committed to memory. The emphasis is on immunohistochemistry, special stains, grading systems, molecular markers, tumor syndromes, and helpful clinical references. Also included are morphologic summaries that encompass high-yield material cutting across all organ systems, such as an illustrated guide for microorganisms, tumor differentials, and an illustrated glossary of pathologic descriptors. The book has a unique format in that the information is presented primarily in tables and diagrams accompanied by brief and to-the-point explanatory text. The guiding principle was to boil the information down to the essentials but with just enough commentary to be accessible to a newcomer to pathology and to serve as a quick reference to a practicing pathologist.  In the 7 years since its initial publication, there have been considerable advances in surgical pathology, particularly immunohistochemical stains, molecular diagnostics, and histologic grading schemes. In the second edition, the content has been thoroughly updated to incorporate these developments, while retaining the overall scope and concise format of the first edition. In addition, the reader will find summaries for many new topics as well as multiple new cartoon illustrations and diagrams.Â
This book provides up-to-date information on all aspects of orofacial pain biomarkers. It opens by presenting background information on clinical phenotypes and the neurobiological substrates underlying chronic orofacial pain and by explaining the potential role of biomarkers in the diagnosis, prognostic evaluation, and treatment of orofacial pain. The main section of the book examines the contribution of human and animal studies to the field of biomarkers for orofacial pain and discusses biomarkers for masticatory muscle pain, temporomandibular joint pain, neuropathic face pain, and autonomic nervous system involvement in trigeminal facial pain. The potential impacts of the immune system on orofacial pain biomarkers and candidate gene phenotypes with possible links to chronic orofacial pain conditions are also addressed, and differences and similarities between saliva and serum biomarkers for pain are explained as well. The final section covers research-related issues in assessment methods and statistical analyses used in evaluating biomarkers, identifies future challenges and suggests new directions in the field.
This book has been designed to provide the full description of the comprehensive management of peritoneal surface malignancies which have originated from different primaries, such as breast cancer, small bowel cancers and imatinib resistant GISTosis and sarcomas and pseudomyxoma. The book provides the most up-to-date information on current approaches such as cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Given the increasing evidence that the patients who may benefit from this treatment modality avoid potential lethal course of these diseases, the book explores the application of these approaches to a number of types of malignancy. The first chapters explore Benign Multicystic Mesothelioma and Pseudomyxoma Peritonei arising from unusual primaries. Among other explored topics are peritoneal metastases from serous papillary uterine carcinoma, sarcoma and from unusual origins. This book is valuable for surgical oncologists who deal with the management of peritoneal surface malignancies.
* state of the art chapters and coverage ensure expertise in this subspecialty area * both common and rare tumors included * optimal multi-disciplinary clinical management fully explained * evidence based surgical oncology and best practice emphasised
There is no need to spend billions of dollars looking for a cure for chronic pain. The solutions have been known for decades with many people breaking free from its grip. Unfortunately, mainstream medicine has and continued to ignore the physiological and neuroscience data that has revealed the answers. Chronic pain is a complex neurological problem, which is, "....an embedded memory that becomes linked with more and more life experiences, and the memory can't be erased." Back in Control provides a framework for you to understand the nature of chronic pain and will allow you to find your own solution based on well-established practices. Since it is a complex problem and you are a unique human being, the one person that can solve it is you. The principles apply to chronic pain involving any part of the body or organ system. The process evolved from the author's own 15-year experience with severe chronic pain. The concepts provide a context of care and connect you with other highly-regarded professionals who are pioneers in the efforts to change the pain treatment paradigm. Some of them include Dr. John Sarno, author of Mind Over Back Pain; Dr. Howard Schubiner, who wrote Unlearn Your Pain; Dr. David Burns, a Stanford psychiatrist and author of Feeling Good; Dr. Fred Luskin who performed research on forgiveness at Stanford and authored Forgive for Good; David Allen who authored a brilliant book on organizing your life, Getting Things Done; and Dr. Anthony DeMello, whose last memoirs are presented in The Way to Love, which introduces you to the healing power of awareness. The essence of solving physical or mental pain is connecting you to your own capacity to heal, which allows you to feel safe. Your body's chemistry is optimized with profound effects on your pain and sense of well-being. These concepts have been deeply researched by Dr. Steven Porges, the originator of The Polyvagal Theory. Step into your new life with this largely self-directed process. An action plan is presented on Dr. Hanscom's website, www.backincontrol.com.

It also covers special patient groups, such as pregnant, pediatric and geriatric populations. Each chapter is augmented with patient images at presentation, radiographic, intraoperative and autopsy images, and color illustrations and photographs showing key anatomy from the cadaver laboratory. With common pitfalls discussed and invaluable tips from a multidisciplinary group of experienced trauma care providers, this book is a useful and practical resource for all those involved in trauma care.
This extensively illustrated book aims to systematize the selection of treatment options in patients with parotid tumors that extend beyond the borders of the parotid tissue and therefore present particular problems for the surgeon. Reconstruction of the postoperative defect is especially difficult in such cases because of the complexity and density of the anatomical structures in the lateral region of the head and neck and also the general condition of most patients, who tend to be elderly and to have accompanying disorders. The difficulty in the management of extended parotid tumors is increased by the need to sacrifice the facial nerve, even if only partially. The book provides clear criteria to assist in the choice of treatment, from the simplest options involving use of local flaps to the most sophisticated ones. It will assist the surgeon in ensuring that the patient achieves the best possible quality of life, no matter what the patient's age or the associated comorbidities. |
