The purpose of this title is to provide a basis for tutors from
which to teach undergraduate medical students. It is not intended
to be a comprehensive work on paediatric surgery or to cover all
the opinions on the subject, but rather to be a practical guide to
what the general practitioner should know about paediatric surgery.
Recent advances in technology have opened up new possibilities in
the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrospinal vascular diseases. It
is now possible to use magnetic resonance imaging to map brain
function and metabolism as an aid to diagnosis. Novel applications
of magnetic resonance angiography allow three-dimensional imaging,
and the magnetization transfer contrast technique gives us a new
window on cerebral vascular function. This volume presents work in
all these fields as well as previewing the techniques of
endovascular surgery for cerebrospinal vascular diseases. These
include modern stereotactic radiosurgery for arteriovenous
malformations and for angiographically occult vascular
malformations of the brain. This book presents an overview of the
latest applications of technology to this rapidly developing and
challenging field.
Speed and accuracy are the two most important qualities that
candidates for the MRCS Viva are expected to demonstrate. Revision
Notes for the MRCS Viva has been written to prepare candidates for
this most daunting of exams. The book provides a comprehensive exam
preparation tool for intercollegiate MRCS oral examinations. It is
organised into two sections, the first devoted to chapters on basic
sciences, the second to system specific surgery. Each chapter is
broken down into topics most likely to appear in current
examinations. For each topic, succinct notes provide candidates
with a framework for answering the stem and secondary questions
encountered in the exam.
The use oflasers has entered almost every facet of medicine and
biology. Therefore, it is to be expected that the reviews contained
in this vol urne will reflect this diversity. As dinical acceptance
has grown with various diagnostic and therapeutic applications, so
has the need for a more thorough understanding of the theoretical
background for each. This is especially true where a correlation is
to be made between the theoretical background and the experimental
data. It is only in this way that we can attain the optimal form of
any therapy. The basic coupling ofenergy into biological tissue and
its conversion into heat is characterized by many parameters. One
ofthe most important is pulse duration. The review by Bimgruber in
Chapter 6 shows how our knowledge ofthis parameter has been
extended. The need for a more basic understanding of the interaction
of electromagnetic energy with various kinds of materials has led
to investigations on the nature of plasmas their stability and
instability, and how theyexist. Docchio reviews the factors that
cause them to occur at a specific locale and then to move away from
that site. The availabilityofmany types ofoptical fibers has
extended our ability to deliver laser energy from various types
oflasers into almost anyselected location. This is particularly
useful in medicine, where less invasive ap proaches to surgery and
diagnosis are always helpful. However, as Rol and his colleagues
explain, the power-handling capabilities ofoptical fibers limit
many applications, particularly for short-duration, high-peak-power
laser pulses."

The Springer Handbook of Auditory Research presents a series of com
prehensive and synthetic reviews of the fundamental topics in modem
auditory research. It is aimed at all individuals with interests in
hearing research including advanced graduate students, postdoctoral
researchers, and clinical investigators. The volumes will introduce
new investigators to important aspects of hearing science and will
help established investigators to better understand the fundamental
theories and data in fields of hearing that they may not normally
follow closely. Each volume is intended to present a particular
topic comprehensively, and each chapter will serve as a synthetic
overview and guide to the literature. As such, the chapters present
neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not
yet appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The series focuses on
topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation
rather than on those for which a literature is only beginning to
develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in
the series as they begin to mature. Each volume in the series
consists of five to eight substantial chapters on a particular
topic. In some cases, the topics will be ones of traditional
interest for which there is a solid body of data and theory, such
as auditory neuroanatomy (Vol. 1) and neurophysiology (Vol. 2).
Other volumes in the series will deal with topics which have begun
to mature more recently, such as development, plasticity, and
computational models of neural processing."
The increased complexity of spinal surgical procedures in recent
years has required more sophisticated anesthetic management of
patients undergoing these procedures. Spine surgery anesthesia is
now recognized as a distinct sub-specialty, increasingly undertaken
by general anesthesiologists as well as neuroanesthesiologists.
Anesthesia for Spine Surgery describes the anesthetic management
and surgical procedures at every vertebral level in both adult and
pediatric patients. The most important related considerations are
covered, including: * Postoperative pain management * One lung
ventilation during anterior thoracic spine surgery * Intraoperative
neuromonitoring * Fluid management Additional chapters review the
radiological features of normal and abnormal spines, common
complications of spine surgery and ASA closed claims relating to
spine surgery anesthesia. Written by highly experienced
neuroanesthesiologists and spine surgeons, Anesthesia for Spine
Surgery is essential reading for trainee and practising
anesthesiologists, neuroanesthesiologists and spine surgeons.
With a long practice of organ transplantation, retransplantation
has become a major goal in patients with long-term failure of their
first transplant (chronic rejection, exhaustion of the transplant,
recurrence of the initial disease, etc. ). In addition,
retransplantation can be necessary in the initial period, due to
severe acute rejection, a non-functioning organ, or surgical
complication. Immunological and non-immunological factors affecting
the success of a second transplant are described in this volume,
together with alternatives to retransplantation. It is hoped that
in the future retransplants will be less frequent, as a result of
improved prevention of transplant failure. J. L. Torrroine et a/.
