There is ample evidence that children and adolescents in large
numbers are actively using integrative (complementary and
alternative) therapies. Various studies now indicate that over 50%
of pediatricians surveyed would refer a patient for integrative
therapy, and they would welcome more natural therapies for children
provided they were safe and effective. However, there has been
little training for pediatricians in this area. Integrative
Pediatrics addresses these issues and provides guidelines for
pediatricians, parents, and general audiences in a balanced,
evidence-based manner.
In this volume in the Weil Integrative Medicine Library series, the
authors describe a rational and evidence-based approach to the
integrative therapy of childhood disorders and well-child care,
integrating the principles of alternative and complementary
therapies into the principles and practice of conventional
pediatrics. The authors examine what works and what doesn't and
offer practical guidelines for physicians to incorporate
integrative medicine into their practice and how to advise patients
and their parents on reasonable and effective therapies. The text
also covers areas of controversy and identifies areas of
uncertainty where future research is needed. Chapters also cite the
best available evidence for both safety and efficacy of all
therapies discussed.
The series editor is Andrew Weil, MD, Professor and Director of the
Program of Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizon. Dr.
Weil's program was the first academic program in the US and he is
the major name in integrative medicine in the US, and well-known
around the world. His program's stated goal is "to combine the best
ideas and practices of conventional and alternative medicine into
cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices
uncritically."

The foot is a very interesting part of the body for therapy. It is
easily accessible and is very suitable for self-treatment, which
partly explains why it is used so much in reflexology. This chart
is particularly interesting and useful for those who treat the feet
and/or do energy work. It shows the classical Chinese acupuncture
points used to treat the organs and a large number of specific
health complaints. The massage and acupressure techniques are
clearly explained. Another approach is also presented, especially
indicated for the feet (water and earth): moxibustion. It is
warming, it stimulates Chi flow, it fights cold and humid
pathologies, and feminine disorders. In addition to all these
points, the meridians according to Shisuto Masunaga and their use
are presented. With this chart, knowledge of the reflex zones will
be completed by points and meridians, opening fascinating new
therapeutic possibilities.

Pullum examines the rhetorical genre of 20th-century American
faith healing. He first analyzes respectively the rhetoric of Aimee
Semple McPherson, William Branham, Oral Roberts, Asa Alonzo Allen,
Ernest Angley, Kathryn Kuhlman, and Benny Hinn--the most prominent
American faith healers of this century. For each, he discusses
their background, the nature of the audiences to whom they
preached, and why they were so successful. Pullum concludes by
drawing together the major rhetorical features of faith-healing
discourse.
Pullum shows that faith-healing discourse follows the strategy
of offering hope to the hopeless, giving God the glory,
articulating humble beginnings, offering testimony of past personal
afflictions overcome, and drawing on scripture to bolster their
claims. This discourse is often presented in dynamic fashion,
making it not only credible, but entertaining as well. After
elucidating the rhetorical patterns of faith healers, Pullum
evaluates claims of the miraculous in light of the standard that
they set for themselves. In other words, miracles as presented by
faith healers are juxtaposed to the types one reads about in the
Bible. Pullum also attempts to account for why people claim
miraculous cures in spite of the fact that nothing miraculous has
occurred in the services of faith healers.

Focuses on the effects of natural products and their active
components on brain function and neurodegenerative disease
prevention. Phytochemicals such as alkaloids, terpenes, flavanoids,
isoflavones, saponins etc are known to possess protective activity
against many neurological diseases. The molecular mechanisms behind
the curative effects rely mainly on the action of phytonutrients on
distinct signaling pathways associated with protein folding and
neuro-inflammation. The diverse array of bioactive nutrients
present in these natural products plays a pivotal role in
prevention and cure of various neurodegenerative diseases,
disorders, or insults, such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's
Disease, Huntington's Disease, traumatic brain injury, and other
neuronal dysfunctions. However, the use of these antioxidants in
the management of neurodegenerative conditions has so far been not
well understood. This is a comprehensive collection addressing the
effects on the brain of natural products and edible items such as
reservatrol, curcumin, gingerol, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and
marine products.
