"Sustainability Science: Managing Risk and Resilience for Sustainable Development" examines this holistic discipline s key concepts, models, and findings regarding the most pressing sustainability issues: climate change, population growth and poverty, energy, public policy, economic growth, and resource systems. The natural and social sciences are woven together throughout the book to provide an inclusive, accurate understanding of relevant trends and events.

Emerging as new disciplines at the turn of the twenty-first century, sustainability science and sustainable development are becoming guiding principles across the geosciences, ecology, environmental science, economics, and social science. Scientists continue to wrestle with their complexity, interwoven concepts, and mutual impact, but because of the subjects indigenous challenges and necessary multidisciplinary focus, it s difficult to find authoritative content in a single source. Authored by a scientist with multiple degrees in geosciences, environmental science, political science, and engineering, this book helps galvanize the science s multidisciplinary nature by focusing on the guiding principles of sustainability science s past, present, and future, and how it is shaping our management of human-environment interaction.
Examines our vulnerability to natural and human-induced hazards and disasters, and how the management of the human-environment relationship impacts and shapes public policy and global economic healthIntroduces new understanding of how poverty reduction and more viable use of natural resources is vital to sustainable future development Features more than 150 figures, full-color photographs, diagrams, and illustrations to highlight major themes and aid in the retention of key concepts Presents a holistic approach to advances in the inter-relationships across the geosciences, ecology, environmental science, economics, and engineering, and provides conceptual and practical tools for linking safety and sustainability"

Process Modelling and Simulation in Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering (Hardcover): Ashok Kumar Verma Process Modelling and Simulation in Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering (Hardcover)
Ashok Kumar Verma
R4,947 Discovery Miles 49 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The use of simulation plays a vital part in developing an integrated approach to process design. By helping save time and money before the actual trial of a concept, this practice can assist with troubleshooting, design, control, revamping, and more. Process Modelling and Simulation in Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering explores effective modeling and simulation approaches for solving equations. Using a systematic treatment of model development and simulation studies for chemical, biochemical, and environmental processes, this book explains the simplification of a complicated process at various levels with the help of a "model sketch." It introduces several types of models, examines how they are developed, and provides examples from a wide range of applications. This includes the simple models based on simple laws such as Fick's law, models that consist of generalized equations such as equations of motion, discrete-event models and stochastic models (which consider at least one variable as a discrete variable), and models based on population balance. Divided into 11 chapters, this book: Presents a systematic approach of model development in view of the simulation need Includes modeling techniques to model hydrodynamics, mass and heat transfer, and reactors for single as well as multi-phase systems Provides stochastic and population balance models Covers the application and development of artificial neural network models and hybrid ANN models Highlights gradients based techniques as well as statistical techniques for model validation and sensitivity analysis Contains examples on development of analytical, stochastic, numerical, and ANN-based models and simulation studies using them Illustrates modeling concepts with a wide spectrum of classical as well as recent research papers Process Modelling and Simulation in Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering includes recent trends in modeling and simulation, e.g. artificial neural network (ANN)-based models, and hybrid models. It contains a chapter on flowsheeting and batch processes using commercial/open source software for simulation.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons - Their Global Atmospheric Emissions, Transport, and Lung Cancer Risk (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons - Their Global Atmospheric Emissions, Transport, and Lung Cancer Risk (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Huizhong Shen
R3,290 Discovery Miles 32 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of the global health impacts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air, conducted on the basis of a high-resolution emission inventory, global chemical transport modeling, and probabilistic risk assessment. One of the main strengths of the thesis is the concentration downscaling process, which provides a linkage between emissions and exposure concentrations at a comparatively high resolution. Moreover, by focusing on individual susceptibility, the thesis proposes an instrumental revision of current risk assessment methodology and argues that, if individual susceptibility were not taken into consideration, the overall risk would be underestimated by 55% and the proportion of highly vulnerable populations would be underestimated by more than 90%.

Designing Switch/Routers - Fundamental Concepts, Design Methods, Architectures and Applications (Paperback): James Aweya Designing Switch/Routers - Fundamental Concepts, Design Methods, Architectures and Applications (Paperback)
James Aweya
R5,034 Discovery Miles 50 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This two-volume set focuses on fundamental concepts and design goals (i.e., a switch/router's key features), architectures, and practical applications of switch/routers in IP networks. The discussion includes practical design examples to illustrate how switch/routers are designed and how the key features are implemented. Designing Switch/Routers: Fundamental Concepts, Design Methods, Architectures, and Applications begins by providing an introductory level discussion that covers the functions and architectures of the switch/router. The first book considers the switch/router as a generic Layer 2 and Layer 3 forwarding device without placing emphasis on any particular manufacturer's device. The underlining concepts and design methods are not only positioned to be applicable to this generic switch/router, but also to the typical switch/router seen in the industry. The discussion provides a better insight into the protocols, methods, processes, and tools that go into designing switch/routers. The second volume explains the design and architectural considerations, as well as, the typical processes and steps used to build practical switch/routers. It then discusses the advantages of using Ethernet in today's networks and why Ethernet continues to play a bigger role in Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), and Wide Area Network (WAN) design. This book set provides a discussion of the design of switch/routers and is written in a style to appeal to undergraduate and graduate-level students, engineers, and researchers in the networking and telecoms industry, as well as academics and other industry professionals. Gas Chromatographic Environmental Analysis - Principles, Techniques, Instrumentation (Hardcover): F Bruner Gas Chromatographic Environmental Analysis - Principles, Techniques, Instrumentation (Hardcover)
F Bruner
R5,769 Discovery Miles 57 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Gas Chromatographic Environmental Analysis Principles, Techniques, Instrumentation Fabrizio Bruner Gas Chromatographic Environmental Analysis is the first, truly complete, up-to-date, homogeneous coverage in book form, of this analytical technique applied to the chemical study of the environment. The book describes the principles of gas chromatography in environmental analysis. After a critical review of the different column types, the author provides a careful description of the necessary instrumentation, with particular attention devoted to sample injection, detection, and calibration systems. As Dr. Bruner states in the Preface. "It is useless to exploit even the most sophisticated apparatus when the injected sample does not represent the original one." Special attention is paid to trace analysis, which is important in the identification of specific fluorocarbons in the atmosphere, chlorinated compounds in drinking water, and monomers from plastic containers in foodstuffs. In addition, the author looks briefly at other techniques such as HPLC and mass spectrometry to give the reader a complete picture of environmental chemical analysis as it is practiced now and in years to come. Because it is written for analytical chemists in both industrial and academic contexts, chemical engineers, industrial hygienists, environmental biologists, and geologists, Gas Chromatographic Environmental Analysis pays particular attention to the methods that have been officially adopted in the U.S. and other highly industrialized countries. It is certain to be a welcome addition also to the libraries of chemical companies, town and regional administrators, universities, and government research centers.

This monograph describes ways of using trees and their byproducts in environmental protection technologies and methodologies throughout their lifecycles. The tree, the planet's main source of biomass, is an indispensable tool for sustainable technologies, and the authors present a holistic picture of how and why in this volume. The authors describe the indispensable role of the living tree in phytoremediation and biomonitoring and detail the relationship of the tree with its surrounding ecosystem. The direct and indirect relationships of a tree at its vegetation period with various components of the ecosystem (i.e. atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and soil) contribute to the role of a tree as the medium for integrating aerogenic and edaphic pollutants. Trees phytostabilize pollutants in their organisms and remove them from the soil. The ability of some species of trees to reflect the quality of the environment makes a basis for the environmental bioindication, while quantitative representation of the chemical composition of the surrounding environment allows for the use of trees in biomonitoring. Morphological features of trees (e.g. annual tree rings) allow us to observe environmental conditions in the past and retrospectively evaluate them. This monograph also details how wood products (e.g. biochar, chips, bark, etc.) of a tree after it has died are used in environmental technologies. Due to the specific morphological form and physical and chemical composition of wood products, they may be used as active materials in the technologies aimed at reducing pollution in an effective and sustainable manner.
