This volume originates from the NATO Advanced Study Institute Environmental UV Radiation: Impact on Ecosystems and Human Health and Predictive Models, held in Pisa, Italy in June 2001. In the last two decades of the past century, concern has been growing for the possible effects on the biosphere of the stratospheric ozone depletion, due to anthropogenic emissions of ozone-destroying chemicals. The ozone loss causes an increase in the biologically important part of the solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) reaching the Earth's surface, which constitutes a threat to the biosphere, because of UV damaging effects on humans, animals and plants. The international agreements have reduced the production of ozo- destroying compounds, which, however, are still present in high concentrations in the stratosphere, mainly because of their longevity, and thus ozone depletion will likely continue for several decades.
This book encapsulates the analysis and design of buried gravity flow conduits, including pipe materials and soil materials and their interaction. These range from traditional pipes to open bottom concrete and corrugated metal culverts with spans of up to 25 metres, and include culverts, storm drains, sewers, and buried bridges. It begins with historical background and easily understandable design models then considers the properties of pipe materials and of pipe rings and backfill soils and the commonalities in their behavior. Finally, design methods consider the interaction of pipe and soil, along with simplified and computer methods. Much of this has been adopted by the AASHTO Committee on Bridges (responsible for highway culvert design) and other standards. The book will be important to any practicing engineer working on buried pipe design, including public engineers at all levels, private consultants, and product manufacturers, and will also suit researchers as a unified and comprehensive presentation.
Bioremediation is an eco-friendly, cost-effective and natural technology targeted to remove heavy metals, radionuclides, xenobiotic compounds, organic waste, pesticides etc. from contaminated sites or industrial discharges through biological means. Since this technology is used in in-situ conditions, it does not physically disturb the site unlike conventional methods i.e. chemical or mechanical methods.
Environmental forensics is the application of scientific techniques
for the purpose of identifying the source and age of a contaminant.
Over the past several years, this study has been expanding as a
course of study in academia, government and commercial markets. The
US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
are among the governmental agencies that utilize the study of
environmental forensics to ensure national security and to ensure
that companies are complying with standards. Even the International
Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (INECE), a
group supported by the European Commission and the World Bank,
utilizes the study of environmental forensics as it applies to
terror threats.
Fertilizers have been used extensively around the globe since the Green Revolution, due to the high subsidies. However, extensive fertilizer use exacerbates soil degradation and causes yield stagnation, and as a result threatens food security and soil sustainability, especially in developing countries. This means that sustainable soil and environmental management are vital to provide food and nutritional security for present and future generations. This has led to the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) declaring 2015-2024 the International Decade of Soils. This book focuses on the impact of sustainable management of soil and environment on improving the functioning of soil-ecosystems and agronomic productivity, and also discusses food security, nutrient cycling, recent advances in INM technologies, eco-friendly cultivation, agricultural practices to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as conservation agriculture and its effects, and strategies for soil sustainability. Offering a comprehensive overview of management in the context of the sustainability of soil and the agroecosystems that it supports, it demonstrates the options available and provides insights into restoring soil health and matching soil nutrient supply with crop demand to ensure nutritional security in an eco-friendly environment.
Emission inventory is basic for the understanding of environmental behaviors and potential effects of compounds, however, current inventories are often associated with relatively high uncertainties. One important reason is the lack of emission factors (EFs), especially for the residential solid fuel combustion in developing countries. In the present study, emission factors of a group of pollutants including particulate matter, organic carbon, elemental carbon (sometimes known as black carbon) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were measured for a variety of residential solid fuels including coal, crop straw, wood, and biomass pellets in rural China. The study provided a large number of emission factors that can be further used in emission estimation. Composition profiles and isomer ratios were investigated and compared so as to be used in source apportionment. In addition, the present study identified and quantified the influence of factors like fuel moisture, volatile matter on emission performance.
