A ‘Light’ Guide to Energy Savings in Transport (Hardcover): Conor Molloy A ‘Light’ Guide to Energy Savings in Transport (Hardcover)
Conor Molloy
R2,814 Discovery Miles 28 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a practical guide to finding and delivering energy savings opportunities in transport operations for professional energy managers and energy auditors. Globally, transport is one of the fastest growing energy consumers and emitters of greenhouse gases, predominantly CO₂. The transport sector is also changing quickly ("more change in the last 5 years than in the last 50" – Mary Barra, CEO General Motors ). After distance, unladen vehicle weight is the biggest driver of energy consumption in transport, hence this book is called the ‘light’ guide – tongue in cheek. Be warned transport is a huge and complex topic. This practical guide from the convener of EN16247-4:2014, the first European energy audit standard for transport, takes a pragmatic approach to delivering measurable energy and emissions reductions in transport operations. Lessons learnt from the author’s 17 years of experience in persuading operators to deliver measured energy savings in transport are interwoven with tools, tips and shortcuts. That will help energy managers and auditors deliver effective transport energy audits that identify opportunities, prompting action, measured savings and, most importantly, being invited back!

Sport, Physical Activity, and Anti-Colonial Autoethnography - Stories and Ways of Being (Hardcover): Jason Laurendeau Sport, Physical Activity, and Anti-Colonial Autoethnography - Stories and Ways of Being (Hardcover)
Jason Laurendeau
R3,586 Discovery Miles 35 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers a brief history of how autoethnography has been employed in studies of sport and physical (in)activity to date and makes an explicit call for anti-colonial approaches - challenging scholars of physical culture to interrogate and write against the colonial assumptions at work in so many physical cultural and academic spaces. It presents examples of autoethnographic work that interrogate physical cultural practices as both produced by, and generative of, settler colonial logics and structures, including research into outdoor recreation, youth sport experiences, and sport spectatorship. It situates this work in the context of key paradigmatic issues in social scientific research, including ontology, epistemology, axiology, ethics and praxis, and looks ahead at the shape that social relations might take beyond settler-colonialism. Drawing on cutting-edge research and presenting innovative theoretical perspectives, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in physical cultural studies, sport studies, outdoor studies, sociology, cultural studies, or qualitative research methods in the social sciences.

Ethnic Hospitality Marketing - Authenticity and Quality Constructions in the Greek Food Industry (Hardcover): Elena Chatzopoulou Ethnic Hospitality Marketing - Authenticity and Quality Constructions in the Greek Food Industry (Hardcover)
Elena Chatzopoulou
R3,588 Discovery Miles 35 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ethnic-themed restaurants are informal but powerful ambassadors for a country's culture and contributors to local and national economies. Communicating authenticity and quality are essential characteristics in the development of a competitive and effective marketing strategy for restaurants. This book analyses how authenticity and quality perceptions are both constructed and communicated within the ethnic dining sector. Drawing on qualitative research methods, the book explores examples from the Greek food industry to analyse restaurateurs' and consumer constructed meanings of authenticity, how it is transmitted and received. It follows by exploring the marketing implications of consumer constructs and effective promotional methods to aid restaurateurs to better engage with customers whilst also respecting their culinary culture. It also guides the reader through the use of NVivo for research purposes, and its utilisations to facilitate the inductive and interpretive analysis. This book offers a valuable resource for researchers across marketing, including consumer behaviour, food marketing, marketing research and communications. The data analysis tools explored are also transferable to a wide range of sectors outside of food and dining.

Migration, Tourism and Social Sustainability (Hardcover): Jaeyeon Choe, Peter Lugosi Migration, Tourism and Social Sustainability (Hardcover)
Jaeyeon Choe, Peter Lugosi
R3,590 Discovery Miles 35 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The distinctions between tourism and migration are increasingly blurred. Tourism often drives various forms of mobility, and an international workforce is essential to maintaining functioning tourism economies. This book explores intersections of tourism and migration, considering their relationships with and impacts on social sustainability. The chapters explore in a variety of contexts how the planning, development and governance of tourism affects the sustainability of communities, which consequently influences attitudes towards migrants and tourists. They also consider how migrant-local connections may evolve, creating opportunities for positive, symbiotic co-existence or intergroup tensions and exploitative relationships. The book paves the way for future work examining new forms and interactions between migration and tourism that contribute to social sustainability. This book will be of great value to students, academics, and researchers interested in tourism, geography, migration/diaspora studies and sociology. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.

Higher Education Institutions and Digital Transformation - Building University-Enterprise Collaborative Relationships... Higher Education Institutions and Digital Transformation - Building University-Enterprise Collaborative Relationships (Hardcover)
Marcin Lis
R3,589 Discovery Miles 35 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The growing complexity, fluidity and instability of the environment as well as changing needs are challenges that both enterprises and higher education institutions must face. Higher education institutions understand that their key product, i.e. knowledge, is a value that can and should be offered to enterprises in a desirable form as a key to innovation and development as well as the basis of the necessary internal transformation to respond to requirements of our times. Attempts to explain the process of collaboration between higher education institutions and businesses based on an institutional perspective fail to capture the complexity of this process. The purpose of this book is to develop a model approach to managerial competencies that affect the innovativeness of enterprises and to identify internal and external key factors strengthening or limiting the impact of managerial competencies on the innovativeness of an enterprise including organisational structure, strategy, organisational culture and more. It will be of value to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, management, strategy, and will be particularly useful to organisations that are aware of their operating conditions in the knowledge-based economy and of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemics on the acceleration of the digital transformation of the contemporary world.

Cultural Mega-Events and Heritage - Challenges for European Cities (Hardcover): Davide Ponzini Cultural Mega-Events and Heritage - Challenges for European Cities (Hardcover)
Davide Ponzini
R3,586 Discovery Miles 35 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book analyses case studies of heritage-rich cities that hosted mega-events to discuss emerging challenges, controversies, and accomplishments. The future of mega-events has never been more uncertain. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has introduced an unparalleled level of doubt regarding the kind of mega-events that will take place in the coming years. This book arrives at a quite unique moment of reflection. Prior to 2020, cities were already questioning the traditional format of mega-events (e.g. Olympics and Expo) while other cultural mega-events have been spreading and gaining popularity, thanks in part to typically lower costs of infrastructures and venues, far more adaptable arrangements, spatial distribution and time frame for hosting. In these ways, they have already been demonstrating higher flexibility in which to respond to future health and safety constraints. When it comes to the relation to the existing city, cultural mega-events have been planned, implemented, and studied far more than any other. By leveraging the richness of cultural mega-events, this multidisciplinary collection deepens the intersection between events and cultural heritage. The chapters in this book provide a new theoretical framework, critical questions, and relevant case studies to argue that the nexus between mega-events and heritage is a key challenge for many cities in Europe and beyond. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of European Planning Studies.

Fox Tossing, Octopus Wrestling and Other Forgotten Sports (Paperback): Edward Brooke-hitching Fox Tossing, Octopus Wrestling and Other Forgotten Sports (Paperback)
Edward Brooke-hitching 1
R270 R177 Discovery Miles 1 770 Save R93 (34%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'An entertaining new book... which looks back at the most bizarre sporting activities ever devised by mankind' Daily Mail 'Perfect book for the Christmas stockings of adults and curious children' Wall Street Journal For those who enjoyed the quirkiness of Schott's Miscellany, the erudition of The Etymologicon or the extremes of The Dangerous Book for Boys, this is the ideal read. From Flagpole Sitting to Hot Cockles, Edward Brooke-Hitching has researched through piles of dusty tomes to bring vividly back to life some of the most curious, dangerous and downright bizarre sports and pastimes ever devised, before we thought better of it and erased them from the memory. After all, who would ever want to bring back Fox Tossing, a popular sport for men and women in 17th-century Germany? The sport involved dozens of couples pairing up and standing 20-25 feet apart in an enclosed field, each holding one end of a net, and then they would pull hard at both ends as the fox ran past, sending it flying high into the air. There are many other sports revealed within these pages that are unlikely ever to make an appearance on our TV screens, such as Firework Boxing, which is just as dangerous as it sounds. Meanwhile, Ski Ballet may not have been so risky, but Suzy 'Chapstick' Chaffee's signature move - the Suzy Split (a complete forward split while balanced on the tips of her skis) - was probably not one to try at home. An intriguing, entertaining and occasionally shocking insight into the vivid imaginations of humanity across the years, Fox Tossing, Octopus Wrestling and Other Forgotten Sports is an unforgettable read and a perfect gift.

Sport and Physical Culture in Occupied France - Authoritarianism, Agency, and Everyday Life (Hardcover): Keith Rathbone Sport and Physical Culture in Occupied France - Authoritarianism, Agency, and Everyday Life (Hardcover)
Keith Rathbone
R2,145 Discovery Miles 21 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sport and physical culture in Occupied France examines the Vichy state's attempts to promote physical education and sports in order to rejuvenate French men and women during the Occupation. Through this cultural lens, it illuminates the central paradox of state power during the Vichy Regime. The state organised a centralised physical cultural programme meant to control and discipline French men and women. However, these activities instead empowered individuals and sporting associations to create spaces for individual expression, protect entrenched business enterprises, preserve republican institutions and organise sites for mutual aid and assistance. Based on extensive archival research, this innovative, multi-city analysis demonstrates how French sporting federations, associations and athletes appropriated Vichy's physical education directives to reshape the ideology of the state and serve their own local agendas. -- .

A comprehensive reference work on the development of athletics in the United States; this encyclopedia examines the sporting experience of Native Americans, African Americans and the immigrant groups of the United States from Colonial times to the present. It includes entries on racial and ethnic groups, ethnic sports, mainstream sports, ethnic and racial institutions and famous sports figures.

The category of ethnic sports includes games and pastimes that Native American Indians and immigrants have played to help preserve their ancestral traditions and cultural identity in the United States. The articles on mainstream sports chronicle and analyze the participation and contribution of racial and immigrant groups in the most popular pastimes that evolved from early English folk games or contests (such as baseball, football, and boxing), to American inventions (basketball). The book also includes entries on racial and ethnic sporting clubs, leagues, and institutions, as well as prominent athletes, sportswriters, officials, and managers. References follow each entry and there is also a selected bibliography at the end of the book that lists the most useful secondary sources in the fields of race and ethnicity in American sports. This book will not only be a valuable resource for both academic and public libraries, but also for collections in sports associations and ethnic groups.

For centuries, the English Lake District has been renowned as an important cultural, sacred and literary landscape. It is therefore surprising that there has so far been no in-depth critical examination of the Lake District from a tourism and heritage perspective. Bringing together leading writers from a wide range of disciplines, this book explores the tourism history and heritage of the Lake District and its construction as a cultural landscape from the mid eighteenth century to the present day. It critically analyses the relationships between history, heritage, landscape, culture and policy that underlie the activities of the National Park, Cumbria Tourism and the proposals to recognise the Lake District as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It examines all aspects of the Lake District's history and identity, brings the story up to date and looks at current issues in conservation, policy and tourism marketing. In doing so, it not only provides a unique and valuable analysis of this region, but offers insights into the history of cultural and heritage tourism in Britain and beyond.

Sport and the Pursuit of War and Peace from the Nineteenth Century to the Present - War Minus the Shooting? (Hardcover): Martin... Sport and the Pursuit of War and Peace from the Nineteenth Century to the Present - War Minus the Shooting? (Hardcover)
Martin Hurcombe, Philip Dine
R3,604 Discovery Miles 36 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume of wide-ranging essays by sport historians and sociologists examines the complex relations of war, peace and sport through a series of case studies from South and North America, Europe, North Africa, Asia and New Zealand. From formal military training in the late nineteenth century to contemporary esports, the relationship between military and sporting cultures has endured across nations in times of conflict and peace. This collection contextualizes debates around the morality and desirability of continuing to play sport against the backdrop of war as others are dying for their nation. It also examines the legacy and memory of particular wars as expressed in a range of sporting practices in the immediate aftermath of conflicts such as the World Wars and wars of independence. At the same time, this book analyses the history of sport and peace by considering how sport can operate as a pacification in some contexts and a tool of reconciliation in others. Together, and through an introductory framing essay, these essays offer scholars of sport, conflict studies and cultural history more broadly a multinational analysis of the war-peace-sport nexus that has operated throughout the world since the late nineteenth century.

Goodbye Leederville Oval - History of West Perth Cheer Squad 1984-86 (Hardcover): Kieran James Goodbye Leederville Oval - History of West Perth Cheer Squad 1984-86 (Hardcover)
Kieran James
R800 Discovery Miles 8 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the memoir of Kieran James, and details his experiences as co-founder of West Perth Football Club's unofficial cheer squad from 1984 to 1986. The book details "traditional," "hot" support for West Perth Football Club among teenaged supporters from middle-class and working-class backgrounds. The book shows how, because of neo-liberal ideologies and the corporatization of football, the new national league (the "expanded VFL" / AFL) relegated the WAFL to a second-tier league in 1987. This move took place over the heads of ordinary football supporters and two WAFL club presidents. Moves to bring the game closer to the people in 1984, such as holding the best-and-fairest award count night at Perth Entertainment Centre, should be seen in this light. This book will allow supporters to relive great teams, great players, and great matches from a wonderful era in WA football 1984-86 before West Coast Eagles joined the expanded VFL.

When Chicago Ruled Baseball - The Cubs-White Sox World Series of 1906 (Paperback): Bernard A. Weisberger When Chicago Ruled Baseball - The Cubs-White Sox World Series of 1906 (Paperback)
Bernard A. Weisberger
R457 R380 Discovery Miles 3 800 Save R77 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1906 the baseball world saw something that had never been done. Two teams from the same city squared off against each other in a World Series that pitted the heavily favored Cubs of the National League against the hardscrabble American League champion White Sox. Now, more than a century later, noted historian Bernard A. Weisberger tells the tale of a unique time in baseball, a unique time in America, and a time when Chicago was at the center of it all.

When Chicago Ruled Baseball brings to life a dazzling epoch in a land of the self-made man--where A. G. Spalding helped establish baseball as both a national pastime and a thriving business, where Mordecai "Three-Finger" Brown overcame a horribly disfiguring injury and pitched his way into the Hall of Fame . . . and Tinkers-to-Evers-to-Chance proved that you could use teamwork to stand out as stars. Weisberger brings to life an unforgettable story of how a city that had rebuilt itself from the ashes of the Great Fire thirty-five years earlier became the focal point of an entire baseball-loving country, and one grand sporting contest staked its claim as one of the most remarkable and electrifying World Series ever to be played.

The United Nations Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing - Global Perspectives (Hardcover): Marvin Formosa, Mala Kapur... The United Nations Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing - Global Perspectives (Hardcover)
Marvin Formosa, Mala Kapur Shankardass
R3,592 Discovery Miles 35 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The United Nations Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) offers a bold new agenda for handling the issue of ageing in the 21st-century. It focuses on three priority areas: older persons and development; advancing health and well-being into old age; and ensuring enabling and supportive environments. This book brings together global perspectives on the MIPAA and focusses on and assesses the success and failures of governments to implement its recommendations. Despite its pivotal importance in international ageing policy, the MIPAA has been relatively neglected by academics in their writings and studies. This book mitigates this analytical and empirical cavity. Each chapter focuses on one specific geographical region and addresses five key themes: National ageing situation; Twenty years of MIPAA; Ensuring ageing with dignity; Healthy and active ageing in a sustainable world; and Priorities for the future. It presents an overall summary of the findings, future challenges and opportunities related to ageing, recommendations for future actions to be taken, and policy adjustments needed. The authors also present lessons that were learnt from managing the impact of COVID-19 on older people, together with an outlook on the most immediate priorities for the future so that the recommendations in the MIPAA are achieved in post-COVID-19 and sustainable ethical scenarios. An important contribution towards the advancement of ageing policy, the book will be indispensable to students and researchers of gerontology, ageing, and health. It will also be of interest to policy makers, geriatricians, dementia care specialists, social policy makers responsible for ensuring active and healthy ageing, and all public sector departments which have specific responsibilities towards improving the quality of life of older adults.

Black Rodeo in the Texas Gulf Coast Region - Charcoal in the Ashes (Paperback): Demetrius W. Pearson Black Rodeo in the Texas Gulf Coast Region - Charcoal in the Ashes (Paperback)
Demetrius W. Pearson
R829 Discovery Miles 8 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Black Rodeo in the Texas Gulf Coast Region: Charcoal in the Ashes provides an in depth sociocultural and historical analysis of the genesis and contemporary state of affairs regarding African American rodeo cowboys in southeast Texas, whose ancestors were instrumental in the development of the most celebrated livestock management industry in the world. The author painstakingly chronicles the origin of the Texas cattle industry from its Mexican roots to Austin's Colony, better known as the George Plantation/Ranch, where African Americans were intimately involved in the livestock management industry since its inception. Although enslaved before, during, and after the Republic of Texas was established, they were early stakeholders in the expansion of the western frontier, and an indispensable source of labor that facilitated the burgeoning cattle industry. Yet, as the author maintains, American history wantonly trivialized, marginalized, and blatantly omitted their contributions. This book sheds light on these early cowboys and their descendants who have participated in America's most prominent prole sport with little to no media exposure. The author dubbed them "Shadow Riders of the Subterranean Circuit," and even though American sports are integrated African American rodeo cowboys may be metaphorically seen as bits of charcoal spread among ashes.
