This unique and thoughtful book considers the tourism
specialization, economic growth, and tourism competitiveness of a
very specific type of tourism: small islands practicing warm water
island tourism. This new book thoroughly examines the phenomenon of
why some small island destinations have been more successful than
others. The main premise applied is that success and survival of
small island tourism hinges on resolving the mystery regarding the
relationship between competitiveness and quality of life. In
addressing this question, the book reviews four relevant and
interconnected concepts: tourism, competitiveness, quality of life,
and scale (or size). In doing so, the book enhances understanding
of the potential of tourism for the improvement of the quality of
life of the residents of small islands. In the last chapter of the
book, the author assesses the impact of COVID-19 on tourism and
specifically its ramifications for small island destinations.
Whether small island populations can rise from beneath the COVID
-19 burden that threatens their economic future is yet to be seen.
Small Island and Small Destination Tourism: Overcoming the
Smallness Barrier for Economic Growth and Tourism Competitiveness
is written from a sustainable perspective that combines tourism
dynamics, development, competitiveness, quality of life, and
business. As such, it is aimed at a broad but higher-level audience
including graduate students, academicians and researchers,
practitioners, policymakers, and international organizations.
During field and court-based sports, players are continually
required to perceive their environment within a match and select
and perform the most appropriate action to achieve their immediate
goal within that match instance. This ability is commonly known as
agility, considered a vital quality in such sports and may
incorporate a variety of locomotion and instantaneous actions.
Multidirectional speed is a global term to describe the competency
and capacity to perform such actions, to accelerate, decelerate,
change direction and ultimately maintain speed in multiple
directions and movements within the context of sports specific
scenarios, encompassing many of these agility, speed, and related
qualities. Multidirectional speed in sport depends on a multitude
of factors including perceptual-cognitive abilities, physical
qualities, and the technical ability to perform the abovementioned
actions. Multidirectional Speed in Sport: Research to Application
reviews the science of multidirectional speed and translates this
information into real-world application in order to provide a
resource for practitioners to develop multidirectional speed with
athletes, bringing together knowledge from a wealth of
world-leading researchers and applied practitioners in the area of
'speed and agility' to provide a complete resource to assist
practitioners in designing effective multidirectional speed
development programmes. This text is critical reading for
undergraduate and graduate sports science students, all individuals
involved in training athletes (e.g., coaches, physiotherapists,
athletic trainers) along with researchers in the field of sports
science and sports medicine.
Exploring scholarship, research, practice and activism on gender,
feminist and queer studies, this edited collection examines,
analyses and critiques the nature and causes of inequality,
disadvantage and marginalisation faced by women, non-hegemonic and
LGBTIQA+ identities who do not fit hegemonic notions of
masculinity, femininity and heteronormativity. The chapters in this
book critically analyse and challenge visible and invisible power
relations, privilege and prejudice by problematising the artificial
organisation of people into hierarchies that preference hegemonic
masculinities, white and heteronormative identities. In questioning
often unchallenged and legitimised inequality and disadvantage,
this book locates itself in the juxtaposition where the lived
experiences of individuals, activism, community participation,
research and scholarship collide with mainstream, local, national
and globalised culture and politics. Divided into four parts, this
book provides a platform for interrogating how social change can
occur in the current neoliberal political context of increasing
conservatism.
Regional Sufi Centres in India: Significance and Contribution sets
out to explore and understand the hundreds of years old
multi-religious sect of India, "Sufism," which advocates humane and
global outlook for entire mankind and regards humanity as a
brotherhood. Sufism came to India from its Arabic Turkic and
Persian homes, instead of remaining confined to palaces and
mosques. It spread out to all over India establishing regional
Centres and Dargahs often known by the surnames of the families
which sustained it, like Khanqah-e-Niazia, in Bareilly (UP),
Khanqah Gesu Daraz in Gulbarga, and Firdausi in Bihar. The authors
of this volume discuss some of the regional Sufi Centres in India
and their contribution in the social emancipation of the society.

This book focuses on the variety of strategies developed by women
athletes in the Pacific Islands to claim contested sporting spaces
– in particular, rugby union, soccer, beach volleyball,
recreational sports and exercise – as a prism to explore
grassroots women’s engagement with heavily entrenched
postcolonial (hetero)patriarchy. Based on primary research
conducted in Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, the book
investigates contested sporting spaces as sites of infrapolitics
intersected primarily by gender and also by other markers of
inequality including ethnicity, sexuality, class and geopolitics.
Contrary to historical and contemporary representations of Pacific
Island women as victims of gender injustice, it explores how these
athletes and those who support them actively carve out space for
their transformative agency. Staking Their Claim: Pacific Island
Women and Contested Sporting Spaces focuses on a region
underexamined by sport or gender studies researchers and will be of
key interest to scholars and students in gender studies, sport
studies, sociology, and Pacific Studies as well as sport
practitioners and policymakers.
The book presents a new type of leadership focused on sustainable
human development and organizational sustainability, which is based
on the self-realization of the person of the leader, which means
the satisfaction of their needs, according to the scale of Abraham
Maslow, through integral human development in all aspects of life.
Because speaking of a leader would seem to cite any person with the
authority that confers a position that has subordinates, but the
reality within organizations has shown that a leader goes further,
requires commitment, awareness and concern for the good. common.
What person has these haracteristics? People who have had more
opportunity to develop in different areas of their being, which
conceives them as more educated. The person is the basis of
leadership. Education and exercise are much more important than all
heredity and the genetic code. This volume explores the various
ways of making explicit the dimensions of social, economic, and
environmental sustainability through knowledge management that
addresses the identification, collection, processing, circulation,
use, exchange, and preservation of knowledge within operating
systems and the context of organizations. considering issues that
contribute to sustainability: human and organizational, where the
leader is the main actor and the means is knowledge management.
This book emphasises the work, the remarkable contributions, and
the lifetime achievements of internationally respected scholars who
have made lifelong contribution to advancing tourism studies and
the dissemination of tourism-based knowledge and education across
the world. Strengthening a field and its ability to form the own
traditions is undoubtedly possible with a bridge to be established
between the past, present and future. The capacity of research
carried out today and in the future is built on the outputs of
education and research completed in the past, adding new links to
the chain. The history of tourism studies and education dates to
the early years of the 20th century and began recording a momentum
in its second half. There is, therefore, a lot more to do in terms
of the institutionalization of such a young and dynamic field and
this book aims to introduce tourism scholars with their widest
geographical representation, dating from the first years of tourism
research back in the early 1900s. Volume I of IV includes tributes
to 20 scholars who have defined tourism as an object of academic
study, established its foundations and organisations, and widened
its scope to encompass thousands of empirical studies. Each of
these volumes contains different profiles thereby bringing 80 of
the pioneers in tourism more vividly to life. This book was
originally published as a special issue of Anatolia: An
International Journal of Tourism & Hospitality Research.

This book offers readers a pitch side seat to the ethics of fandom.
Its accessible six chapters are aimed both at true sports fans
whose conscience may be occasionally piqued by their pastime, and
at those who are more certain of the moral hazards involved in
following a team or sport. Why It's OK to Be a Sports Fan wrestles
with a range of arguments against fandom and counters with its own
arguments on why being a fan is very often a good thing. It looks
at the ethical issues fans face, from the violent or racist
behavior of those in the stands, to players' infamous misdeeds, to
owners debasing their own clubs. In response to these moral risks,
the book argues that by being critical fans, followers of a team or
individual can reap the benefits of fandom while avoiding many of
the ethical pitfalls. The authors show the value in deeply loving a
team, but also how a condition of this value is recognizing that
the love of a fan comes with real limits and responsibilities. Key
Features Provides an accessible introduction to a key area of the
philosophy of sport Closely looks at some of the salient ethical
concerns around sports fandom Proposes that the value of community
in partisan fandom should not be underestimated as a key feature of
the good life Examines how the same emotions and environments that
can lead to violence are identical to those that lead to virtuous
loyalty Argues for a fan's responsibility in calling out violence
or racist behavior from their fellow fans
This book explores the enigmatic world of the natural underground,
viewing it as a site of leisure and of 'anthropotechnics', where
human beings and technology are interconnected. It also reshapes
the old language of caving into new ideas that broaden the
possibilities of the sociology of caving. After outlining a novel
methodological approach that can be used to understand new leisure
trends and cultures in present modernity, Exploring the Natural
Underground offers a comprehensive investigation of the societal
context in which caving takes place. Thereafter it goes on to argue
that the natural underground can be used as a means of escaping
some of the unavoidable influences of consumer capitalism in the
way that it stimulates imaginations, senses and emotions
differently. Marking a turning point in the way that the natural
underground is understood, and the degree to which sensory
dimensions of leisure are valued, this book will appeal to anybody
interested in caving, as well as scholars and students of leisure
studies, the sociology of leisure, the ethnography of leisure, and
human geography.
This is the first textbook designed to teach statistics to students

Trust is a fundamental concept in modern society. This book
provides current findings of trust research from various
disciplines: communication studies, information systems,
educational and organizational psychology, sports psychology and
economics. The volume analyses how trust relationships have changed
and are still changing under the influence of digitalization. In
addition to presenting the current state of research, the
implications for trust relationships in the digital world are
examined. The book brings together empirical findings with the
implications for media, business, sports and science. It is of
value to interdisciplinary researchers and graduate students.
This book addresses tourism and its development in the
post-communist context of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).
Although it has been over 30 years since many countries of Central
and Eastern Europe embarked on the path of transition from state
socialism to capitalism and liberal democracy, the ongoing
atrocious events in Ukraine bluntly remind us that the perception
of CEE as a ‘transition’ region may have been done away with
too early and that the legacies of communism continue to influence
the reality of the region. Tourism is no exception here. While on
the one hand, tourism has significantly contributed to the
post-communist restructuring of CEE, on the other, the communist
heritage has played (and still plays) an important role in shaping
the tourism geographies of the CEE region. The book consists of 14
chapters (divided into two sections), a new introduction and a
reflective concluding section. All 14 main chapters in this book
were originally published in the Tourism Geographies journal. The
aim of the book is two-fold. First, it summarises, distils and
highlights the important and often ground-breaking contributions
Tourism Geographies has made over the years to the debate on
tourism in CEE. Second, it lays foundations for further research on
tourism in the post-communist states of CEE. This book will be of
great interest to upper-level students, researchers, and academics
in various disciplines – human geography, politics, sociology,
and tourism studies in general.
This book aims to curate a collection of articles to showcase the
latest work and biggest trends shaping the global tourism industry
in the past two decades - new technology and the Chinese tourists.
While the emergence of new technology continues to propel the
evolution of the tourism industry, Chinese tourists as a dominating
market have won increasing attention across worldwide destinations.
On one hand, the vast advancement of technology has fundamentally
shifted the way Chinese tourists travel. On the other hand, the
arrival of technologically savvy Chinese tourists has provoked
tourism providers and destinations to adopt innovative technology
(e.g., mobile payment). Standing on the edge of the third decade of
the twenty-first century, the tourism industry and scholarly
community are facing unprecedented challenges amidst exciting
opportunities. Particularly, this line of research is perhaps
timelier than ever, with the pandemic physically distancing people
whilst augmenting technology's function in mediating social
interactions and connecting lives beyond geographic boundaries. New
Technology and Mediated Chinese Tourists will be a great resource
for researchers and students of Tourism and Hospitality including
those interested to understand how innovation and technology is
embedded in the tourism industry. This book was originally
published as a special issue of the Journal of China Tourism
Research.
Freddie Fitzsimmons was among baseball's top pitchers during his
19-year career with the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers. Famed
for his knuckleball, Fitz also had the reputation as the game's
best fielding pitcher. Fitzsimmons was both a fierce competitor and
one of the most admired players of baseball's Golden Age.
When discovered by Giants' manager John McGraw in 1925,
Fitzsimmons became a household name to baseball fans around the
country. A mainstay of the New York rotations of the 1920s and
1930s, Fitzsimmons pitched in the 1933 and 1936 World Series, where
he suffered painful losses. Being traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers in
1937 rejuvenated Fitzsimmons and brought him back to the World
Series one last fateful time in 1941. When his playing days ended,
Fitzsimmons managed the Philadelphia Phillies and later coached for
the Giants and several other teams.
In Freddie Fitzsimmons: A Baseball Life, Peter J. De Kever brings
to life Fitzsimmons's colorful character and most memorable games.
Fitz's life in baseball spanned nearly half a century and brought
him into contact with many of the game's luminaries, such as Babe
Ruth, Bill Terry, Leo Durocher, and Willie Mays. A central player
in the great 1941 pennant race, Fitzsimmons also witnessed Bobby
Thomson's shot heard 'round the world a decade later. These and
other stories figure prominently in this first biography of Freddie
Fitzsimmons.
Studying tourist behavior-what tourists do, what their preferences
are, etc.-provides helpful information for designing new tourism
products, for policymaking, and for developing effective tourism
marketing strategies. This informative volume offers a diverse
selection of chapters on research related to the customer behavior
of tourists. With chapters from tourism professionals from around
the world, the volume presents research work, new perspectives, and
case studies of tourist behavior from varied cultural and
geographical backgrounds. The volume addresses relationship
management at different types of tourist destinations, such as spas
and museums; the creation and sustainability of tourism luxury
brands; the continuing growing influence of social media and
digital technology on tourist choices; gauging tourists'
motivation, satisfaction, and return-trip intentions; the role of
tourism activities on destination choice; perspectives and case
studies on heritage tourism, and more. The book also includes a
chapter on how virtual reality, streaming, and livestreaming during
the COVID pandemic affected tourism and goes on to makes
predictions for tourist behavior in the post-COVID-19 era.
Advances in genetics and related biotechnologies are having a
profound effect on sport, raising important ethical questions about
the limits and possibilities of the human body. Drawing on real
case studies and grounded in rigorous scientific evidence, this
book offers an ethical critique of current practices and explores
the intersection of genetics, ethics and sport. Written by two of
the world's leading authorities on the ethics of biotechnology in
sport, the book addresses the philosophical implications of the
latest scientific developments and technological data.
Distinguishing fact from popular myth and science fiction, it
covers key topics such as the genetic basis of sport performance
and the role of genetic testing in talent identification and
development. Its ten chapters discuss current debates surrounding
issues such as the shifting relationship between genetics, sports
medicine and sports science, gene enhancement, gene transfer
technology, doping and disability sport. The first book to be
published on this important subject in more than a decade, this is
fascinating reading for anyone with an interest in the ethics of
sport, bioethics or sport performance.
