Some scientific studies suggest that human beings are innately
selfish and that Christian virtues like self-sacrifice are a
delusion. In this intriguing volume, esteemed theologian Thomas Jay
Oord interprets the scientific research and responds from a
theological and philosophical standpoint, providing a
state-of-the-art overview of love and altruism studies. He offers a
definition of love that is scientifically, theologically, and
philosophically adequate. As Oord helps readers arrive at a clearer
understanding of the definition, recipients, and forms of love, he
mounts a case for Christian agape and ultimately for a loving God.

The present book contains a course to learn the Greek of the New
Testament. 42 lessons are given; every 7th lesson is a repetition.
Thanks to modern computer programmes we can offer a unique method,
as it was possible to order a vast number of data, so as to present
them in a useful fashion. An assimilating learning technique is
used. That is to say, one is immersed immediately into the Greek of
the N.T., also called Koine. At first one learns simple phrases.
Later on these become complete sentences. In this way the student
gets used to the Greek of the New Testament from the beginning and
gradually is trained to advance. Most grammar and vocabulary has
been worked into the sentences and learning those one gets
acquainted with the Greek in a playful way. This ia a very useful
and commendable book for the beginner of New Testament Greek. For
enough grammar and words are learned to set one on his or her way
towards reading the New Testament by oneself.
Poetry selection on love and mythical tales, legends; of triolets,
sonnets, villanelles, free verse; a journey into nature, emotions
and the soul.

Do our physical bodies really matter in corporate worship? Isn't
our soul the most important part of us? Aren't our bodies, at best,
negligible to worship and, at worst, a hindrance? The answer to
this last question is categorically no, as Christians have attested
throughout history and across the global church. The purpose of the
body instead is to offer to God in worship what only it can
offer--and what must be offered to God. By drawing on the wisdom of
the Bible, church history, and theology, and by taking advantage of
the unique insights of the arts and sciences, ethics, and spiritual
formation, a respected theologian and pastor argues in this book
that there is something for our physical bodies to do that
decisively forms Christlikeness in us within the context of
corporate worship. What we do with our postures, gestures, and
movements in worship matter. How our senses of sight, scent, sound,
taste, and touch are involved in worship matter. How our
spontaneous and prescriptive activities form us in worship matter.
All of it matters to faithful and fulsome worship for the sake of a
body that is fully alive in the praise of God.
Buying a haunted house was never in Ashley Scott's plans, but when
an intriguing opportunity drops into her lap after a major setback,
she finds herself trekking cross-country to Hope Harbor on the
Oregon coast to launch a new life. Wounded warrior Jonathan Gray
isn't sure what to make of the attractive woman on his reclusive
older neighbor's isolated property, but her presence is none of his
business--until she enlists his help with an ambitious project.
When Jonathan finds his interest in the new arrival becoming more
personal than professional, however, his defenses go up. There's no
room in his life--or his heart--for romance. Yet, as these three
hurting people join forces to restore life, laughter, and love to a
historic estate that has known too much sadness, they may also find
healing, hope, and happiness for themselves. Bestselling author
Irene Hannon invites you back to Hope Harbor, where hearts heal and
love blooms.

Koalas regularly appeared in Australian biologist Danielle Clode's
backyard, but it was only when a bushfire threatened that she truly
paid them attention. She soon realized how much she had to learn
about these complex and mysterious animals. In vivid, descriptive
prose, Clode embarks on a delightful and surprising journey through
evolutionary biology, natural history and ecology to understand
where these enigmatic animals came from and what their future may
hold. She begins her search with the fossils of ancient giant
koalas, delving into why the modern koala has become the lone
survivor of a once-diverse family of uniquely Australian
marsupials. Koala investigates the remarkable physiology of these
charismatic creatures. Born the size of tiny "jellybeans," joeys
face an uphill battle, from crawling into their mother's pouch to
being weaned onto a toxic diet of gum-tree leaves, the koalas'
single source of food. Clode explores the complex relationship and
unexpected connections between this endearing species and humans.
She explains how koalas are simultaneously threatened with
extinction in some areas due to disease, climate change and
increasing wildfires, while overpopulating forests in other parts
of the country. Deeply researched and filled with wonder, Koala is
both a tender and inquisitive paean to a species unlike any other
and a call to ensure its survival.
For the State Department, image is a daily concern. Many
constituencies have to be taken into account in its public
declarations: the president, the Congress, the media, the taxpaying
public and, finally, the many foreign governments attentive to what
the State Department says and does. This book attempts, in large
measure, to shed light on matters that the Department prefers not
to talk about. A reporter has to be on the beat for a long time to
accumulate enough anecdotes to fill even a relatively small book.
In my case, my tenure in the building lasted just under 40 years. I
have brief profiles on all secretaries I covered (except for two
who served very briefly). I have highlighted bitter inter-agency
policy struggles-Iran and Iraq are examples. Humor is not ignored
on these pages. Nor were the rare instances of murder, two
involving career diplomats and another occurring on the
Department's seventh floor. At times, American diplomats have faced
appalling dangers overseas, leading in some instances to
assassinations, hostage takings or bombings of embassies. Every
secretary of state travels extensively abroad. I was privileged to
accompany nine to more than 80 countries. Some anecdotes I recount
relate to trips I did not take but heard about from others. I am
sure that many priceless stories, regardless of location, have fled
from my memory bank. I have resurrected those that didn't. George
Gedda, January 2014, Lake Mary, Fl
