Blanche, Augustine, and Genevieve found themselves in the hysteria
ward of the Salpetriere Hospital in 1870s Paris, where their care
was directed by the prominent neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. They
became medical celebrities: every week, eager crowds arrived at the
hospital to observe their symptoms; they were photographed,
sculpted, painted, and transformed into characters in novels. The
remarkable story of their lives as patients in the clinic is a
strange amalgam of intimate details and public exposure, science
and religion, medicine and the occult, hypnotism, love, and
theater. But who were Blanche, Augustine, and Genevieve? What role
did they play in their own peculiar form of stardom? And what
exactly were they suffering from? Hysteria with its dramatic
seizures, hallucinations, and reenactments of past traumas may be
an illness of the past, but the notions of femininity that lie
behind it offer insights into disorders of the present."
The post-Marxian, new historical materialism described in this book
breathes new life into our comprehension of the world. A 200-year
perspective on modernity tells us that an all-embracing physical
phenomenon holds humankind in its grip.
History has recorded two distinct global systems thus far:
"laissez faire/metal money," which spanned most of the 19th century
and lasted until the outbreak of World War I, and "mixed
economy/weak multilateralism," which began after 1945 and exists
today. The period between the two systems, 1914-1945, was a chaotic
transition. This evolutionary pulsation is well known to students
of thermodynamics. It corresponds to the behavior of expanding and
complexifying material systems.
The exhaustion of oil and other natural resources is pushing the
world toward a third global system that may be called "two-level
economy/strong multilateralism." It will be impossible to get there
without a new chaotic transition. No repeated warnings, academic
advice, moral advocacy, inspired reforms, or political leadership
can provide a shortcut around it. But if it took "1914-1945" to
make a relatively minor adjustment in the global order, what will
it take to make a major one?

Almost 2,000 British Prisoners of War were aboard the Japanese
freighter Lisbon Maru when an American submarine torpedoed and sank
her in October 1942. This book tells the story of those men, from
the fighting in Hong Kong, through the sinking, and -- for some -
to liberation and beyond.
We live in a world of fakers. Rather than being real with each
other, we present a carefully crafted persona that hides our faults
and magnifies our good qualities. But inside we long to be loved,
warts and all. We long to stop hiding from each other--and
especially from God.
With candor and clarity, pastor Rick Bezet calls readers to a life
built on authenticity, showing that the way to true freedom lies
through reclaiming our hearts, reviving our souls, and renewing our
minds in light of what God has done for us through Jesus Christ.
Through biblical stories and (often funny) personal examples, Bezet
encourages readers to live with passion, integrity, and
perseverance. He releases readers from the spiritual death that
comes with pretending and leads them into a new life characterized
by transparency rather than fear.
Put Your Faith Into Action
Do you ever feel like something in your faith is missing, that
going to church, studying the Bible, and tithing just aren't
enough? There has to be more, right? What would it look like to
truly "follow" Christ and not just believe in him?
David Nowell asked the very same questions, and was led to minister
to the "least of these," whom God loves deeply. In "Dirty Faith,"
Nowell shares powerful stories of faith in action, and encourages
us to move with him from the sidelines to the front line, to get
our hands dirty helping the hopeless, the disenfranchised, and the
poor.
Loving as God loves is central to the gospel, whether that means
taking in foster children, ministering to inmates at the local
jail, or something else God has in mind just for you. Let this
inspiring book help you find what's been missing in your faith.
"David Nowell has challenged not only our view of the church's
responsibility in light of the worldwide plague of violence on
children--from poverty to homelessness to prostitution--he has
challenged our view of Jesus Christ. Nowell's Jesus has dirt under
his fingernails and calluses on his hands. The Word becoming flesh
is not just incarnation, it is a holiness that is willing to be
stained by the brokenness of a world that would abuse an innocent
child. I want my staff to read this book. It will challenge them to
do what is required of them, and then some." --Dr. Walter Crouch,
President/CEO, Appalachia Service Project
"Filled with unforgettable stories from the field, Nowell's writing
will both break your heart and lift your vision. "Dirty Faith" is a
must-read for those who want to put their faith into action by
serving others." --Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer, senior pastor, The Moody
Church
Philosophy is not a closed club or a secret society. It's for
anyone who thinks big questions are worth talking about. To get us
started, Douglas Groothuis unpacks seven pivotal sentences from the
history of western philosophy-a few famous, all short, none
trivial. Included are: "The unexamined life is not worth
living."-Socrates "You have made us for yourself, and our hearts
are restless until they rest in you."-Augustine "I think, therefore
I am."-Decartes "The heart has reasons, that reason knows nothing
of."-Pascal Sentences from Protagoras, Aristotle and Kierkegaard
round out this quick tour. Since every philosopher has a story, not
just a series of ideas, Groothuis also offers a bit of each one's
life to set the stage. The seven sterling sentences themselves,
while they can't tell us all there is to know, offer bridges into
other lands of thought which can spark new ideas and adventures.
And who knows where they might lead? The accessible primers in the
Introductions in Seven Sentences collection act as brief
introductions to an academic field, with simple organization: seven
key sentences that give readers a birds-eye view of an entire
discipline.
Just when you thought you'd seen and heard everything ... another
demon speaks
There are presently too many manifestations of negative, disruptive
and counter-productive phenomena in the Body of Christ for those
who claim to be authentic disciples to sit still, philosophizing,
twiddling their fingers and basking in ignorance...as though Satan
and his demons had gone on an extended vacation, overseas.
This book seeks to unearth several of the diabolic roots that are
responsible for the strangulation of numerous churches and the
destruction of careless, casual, undiscerning Christians, right
across the globe. It deals with controversial topics that are often
branded "taboo" by the religious status quo and which we would
normally discuss only in our most secret chambers, if any at all.
"If I Were A Demon (Part 2)" acknowledges that a fierce, ongoing
Spiritual Battle exists between the two opposing forces, and that
human beings make daily choices that will either cripple or empower
them in their quest for survival on this tumultuous planet.

The Original Rider Waite Tarot is the most popular and widely used
tarot card deck in the world. First issued in 1910, each card is
rich in symbolism and striking in its design. The deck is
accompanied by an invaluable instructional book, The Key to the
Tarot explaining the history and usage of the tarot cards, of which
there are 78 divided into the Major and Minor Arcanas. The book can
be used in conjunction with any set of tarot cards, but it was
written in particular to accompany the 78-card Rider Waite tarot
deck which was designed by Pamela Colman Smith in accordance with
A. E. Waite's instructions. The Key to the Tarot explains the
history and symbolism of the cards and gives instructions on how to
use them for purposes of divination. This edition includes a
specially commissioned foreword by Liz Greene.
"A new voice for a new generation, Katie Westenberg is exhorting us
to remember. We need this challenge. Read her book and take her
words to heart!"--Bestselling author BARBARA RAINEY In this
frenzied world, it's time to focus your faith. We live in a loud,
opinionated world of staggering distraction. It's not only
exhausting, but immobilizing. You are tempted to zone out, binge
watch, and doom scroll. With all of this distraction, it's hard to
keep focus on what matters most: God and His nearness in this very
moment. In this powerful resource--part book, part Bible
study--Katie Westenberg equips you to focus on what truly matters.
Leaning on Scripture, scientific studies of memory, and the power
of a renewed mind, she helps you uncover the ancient way of being
un-distractible. Here is the wake-up call our hearts are longing
for--and the clear-eyed focus our souls were made for.
Secession is one of the richest veins yet to be mined in
international relations. The unexplored concept of secession
implicates a host of historical accomplices related to the
development of industrial modernity and considerable changes in the
nature of sovereignty and the state. By historicizing secession it
becomes possible not only to explain the historical transformations
that have led to the theoretical impasse on secession but to better
articulate the possibilities for current transformative
interactions. In Forgetting Ourselves, Linda Bishai thoroughly
examines why secession has been ignored by international relations
both in theory and practice. Mainstream perspectives in
international relations theory have, up to this point, questioned
neither state formation nor the inside/outside divide of state
sovereignty. Bishai, however, historicizes and questions the
concept of secession itself, and the component assumptions of
territoriality and identity upon which it rests. Forgetting
Ourselves places secession in its proper historical context as
something possible only in the modern era and only perceived as a
global threat within the last century. Bishai argues that
understanding the historic contingency of secessionist conflict
allows us to contemplate an alternative vision of international
relations in which the violence associated with controlling
territory is no longer necessary for validating political
identities.

Popular notions of Christian spirituality today tend to focus on
getting us out of the world or getting the world out of us. Many
are looking to spirituality as a means of disengaging from this
life--to experience the transcendent or discover personal
wholeness. On the other hand, much of popular Christian thought
seems to be about avoiding the corruption of the world by being
pious and following the rules. But Jesus offers a radical model for
living. As the Incarnate One who dwelt among us to accomplish the
mission of God, he teaches us how to dwell in the world for the
sake of the world. If we are to become like him, we must learn what
it means to live out this missional spirituality in the places we
dwell. What does a Christian life deeply rooted in the logic of the
Incarnation look like? Missional teacher and pastor Barry Jones
shares his vision for authentic Christian spirituality focused on
becoming more like Jesus. We dwell in a specific place and time in
history, with unique bodies and in a world for which God has great
purposes of redemption. This presence in the world should lead us
to pattern our lives after the life of Jesus who was a boundary
breaker, a shalom-maker, a people-keeper, and a wounded-healer.
"Jesus' life shows us what it looks like to be fully human, to be
whole and holy . . . to be in the world and not of the world, to
live passionately for the world and not protectively withdrawn from
it, " says Jones. "Allowing the logic of the Incarnation to inform
our vision of the spiritual life corrects the tendency toward a
self-oriented pursuit of transcendence or a negative spirituality
of behavior modification and disengagement from the world."
Including practical suggestions for real-life application and
questions for discussion, Jones describes living a missional life
from a place of deep connection with and dependence on God. Not
only must we have a clear and compelling vision of the life we want
to live, but we must also cultivate the spiritual disciplines
necessary to live out our vision in the specific contexts of
day-to-day life. We need a renewed vision of Christian spirituality
that leads us to be conformed into the image of Christ who
dweltwith us for us.
One day Travis Scholl discovered a labyrinth in his neighborhood.
As he began to walk it, he found this ancient practice offered a
much-needed path away from life's demands, allowing him to
encounter God in quiet solitude. In this meditative guide, Travis
Scholl takes readers on a journey: "The path is always new,
because, as a spiritual discipline, the labyrinth is a tool for
contemplation, for reflection, for prayer. Underneath the surface,
walking the labyrinth is a profound exercise in listening, in
active silence, in finding movement and rhythm in the stillnesses
underneath and in between every day's noise. Walking the labyrinth
is an exercise in finding the voice speaking in whispers underneath
the whirlwind of sound." With no end, but only a center, labyrinths
become a physical symbol of prayer and our journey with God. Each
step unites faith and action as travelers take one step at a time,
living each moment in trust and willingness to follow the course
set before them. Providing a historical and modern context for this
unique spiritual discipline, Scholl weaves his own journey through
a labyrinth with the Gospel of Mark's telling of the twists and
turns of Jesus' life, providing 40 reflections ideal for daily
reading during Lent or any time of the year.
"I was introduced to the gospel of Jesus Christ as a college
student. The Jesus of the New Testament overwhelmed me, and by
God?s grace Jesus still does," writes professor Robbie Castleman,
author of New Testament Essentials. Her love of Jesus and Scripture
is evident in this study, which seeks to answer the question Jesus?
disciples posed: "What kind of man is this?" (Matthew 8:27). New
Testament Essentials introduces us to the New Testament in three
parts: The revelation of God in Jesus Christ, the indwelling of God
in the church by the Holy Spirit and the present and coming kingdom
of God. In each of the twelve studies the author helps us to hear
Scripture in its own historical and cultural context before guiding
us to apply it to our own context. Jesus? life, teachings and works
were thoroughly grounded in the Hebrew Scriptures. And so each
session includes a special feature called "Connecting to the Old
Testament." Through this you will begin to discover the links
between the two testaments and gain a fuller sense of our unfolding
salvation history. Following a format similar to the other volumes
of the Essentials series, each of the 12 sessions includes the
following elements: A memory verse A Bible study A reading A life
application section "Connecting to the Old Testament" feature
Designed to work well on your own, with a partner or in a small
group, New Testament Essentials offers a comprehensive overview
that will enrich your knowledge and deepen your faith.
