"Perfect for Christians looking to reassess their relationship with alcohol."--Publishers Weekly When author and Episcopal priest Erin Jean Warde quit drinking, she heard from many others in a similar situation seeking support. In Sober Spirituality, she combines personal storytelling with theological reflection to offer encouragement, wisdom, and practical insight for readers who want to reexamine their relationship with alcohol. Warde explores the way our culture promotes alcohol consumption and shows how we can choose to change our perception of alcohol in our spiritual communities. She names not only the challenges of sobriety and spirituality but also the tremendous gifts and blessings that come through quitting drinking or being more mindful about alcohol use. Readers will emerge with a deeper understanding of how their faith informs daily habits and choices. Sober Spirituality also calls the church to a better understanding of how it can ally with recovery communities. Ultimately, this book declares we are all worthy of an abundant and joyful life in mind, body, and soul.

For the State Department, image is a daily concern. Many constituencies have to be taken into account in its public declarations: the president, the Congress, the media, the taxpaying public and, finally, the many foreign governments attentive to what the State Department says and does. This book attempts, in large measure, to shed light on matters that the Department prefers not to talk about. A reporter has to be on the beat for a long time to accumulate enough anecdotes to fill even a relatively small book. In my case, my tenure in the building lasted just under 40 years. I have brief profiles on all secretaries I covered (except for two who served very briefly). I have highlighted bitter inter-agency policy struggles-Iran and Iraq are examples. Humor is not ignored on these pages. Nor were the rare instances of murder, two involving career diplomats and another occurring on the Department's seventh floor. At times, American diplomats have faced appalling dangers overseas, leading in some instances to assassinations, hostage takings or bombings of embassies. Every secretary of state travels extensively abroad. I was privileged to accompany nine to more than 80 countries. Some anecdotes I recount relate to trips I did not take but heard about from others. I am sure that many priceless stories, regardless of location, have fled from my memory bank. I have resurrected those that didn't. George Gedda, January 2014, Lake Mary, Fl

In the space between no longer and not yet, you still belong somewhere. It catches most of us by surprise. Life is going along until suddenly we find ourselves at the crossroads of what was and what is yet to be. This in-between space of transition often keeps us awake at night, asking questions like What am I supposed to do now? and Why do I feel so lost and alone? If a new direction doesn't come, it can feel like you're stuck in a cycle of purposeless days. Bestselling author and Bible teacher Nicki Koziarz asked those same questions. Changes were coming in multiple areas of her life, and she struggled to navigate through them. But Nicki discovered how to find direction for today by understanding the types of seasons a transition can bring. In Your New Now, readers will study Moses's life through the perspective of four transition seasons he experienced: development, separation, cultivation, and finished. With practical advice, relatable stories, and biblical wisdom, this book will help you: â— Discern which transition season you're in and learn how to overcome its challenges â— Stop feeling lost in life by discovering where you belong on the road between what was and what will be â— Protect your future by learning to utilize Scripture to fight fears of the unknown Transitions start with something ending, and waiting for a new beginning can be agonizing. But you can learn to be confident and optimistic, even when life feels like it's paused in an unfamiliar now.

Blanche, Augustine, and Genevieve found themselves in the hysteria ward of the Salpetriere Hospital in 1870s Paris, where their care was directed by the prominent neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. They became medical celebrities: every week, eager crowds arrived at the hospital to observe their symptoms; they were photographed, sculpted, painted, and transformed into characters in novels. The remarkable story of their lives as patients in the clinic is a strange amalgam of intimate details and public exposure, science and religion, medicine and the occult, hypnotism, love, and theater. But who were Blanche, Augustine, and Genevieve? What role did they play in their own peculiar form of stardom? And what exactly were they suffering from? Hysteria with its dramatic seizures, hallucinations, and reenactments of past traumas may be an illness of the past, but the notions of femininity that lie behind it offer insights into disorders of the present."

Rethinking the World (Hardcover): Peter Pogany Rethinking the World (Hardcover)

R748 Discovery Miles 7 480 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The post-Marxian, new historical materialism described in this book breathes new life into our comprehension of the world. A 200-year perspective on modernity tells us that an all-embracing physical phenomenon holds humankind in its grip.

History has recorded two distinct global systems thus far: "laissez faire/metal money," which spanned most of the 19th century and lasted until the outbreak of World War I, and "mixed economy/weak multilateralism," which began after 1945 and exists today. The period between the two systems, 1914-1945, was a chaotic transition. This evolutionary pulsation is well known to students of thermodynamics. It corresponds to the behavior of expanding and complexifying material systems.

The exhaustion of oil and other natural resources is pushing the world toward a third global system that may be called "two-level economy/strong multilateralism." It will be impossible to get there without a new chaotic transition. No repeated warnings, academic advice, moral advocacy, inspired reforms, or political leadership can provide a shortcut around it. But if it took "1914-1945" to make a relatively minor adjustment in the global order, what will it take to make a major one?

Koala - A Natural History and an Uncertain Future (Hardcover): Danielle Clode Koala - A Natural History and an Uncertain Future (Hardcover)
Danielle Clode
R687 Discovery Miles 6 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Koalas regularly appeared in Australian biologist Danielle Clode's backyard, but it was only when a bushfire threatened that she truly paid them attention. She soon realized how much she had to learn about these complex and mysterious animals. In vivid, descriptive prose, Clode embarks on a delightful and surprising journey through evolutionary biology, natural history and ecology to understand where these enigmatic animals came from and what their future may hold. She begins her search with the fossils of ancient giant koalas, delving into why the modern koala has become the lone survivor of a once-diverse family of uniquely Australian marsupials. Koala investigates the remarkable physiology of these charismatic creatures. Born the size of tiny "jellybeans," joeys face an uphill battle, from crawling into their mother's pouch to being weaned onto a toxic diet of gum-tree leaves, the koalas' single source of food. Clode explores the complex relationship and unexpected connections between this endearing species and humans. She explains how koalas are simultaneously threatened with extinction in some areas due to disease, climate change and increasing wildfires, while overpopulating forests in other parts of the country. Deeply researched and filled with wonder, Koala is both a tender and inquisitive paean to a species unlike any other and a call to ensure its survival.

King Ranch Story - Truth and Myth (Paperback): Mona D. Sizer King Ranch Story - Truth and Myth (Paperback)
Mona D. Sizer
R497 Discovery Miles 4 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The King Ranch Story is the love story of an ambitious young man and his dream of creating a great empire on Texas land. It's about the love between a man and woman, Captain Richard King and his wife Henrietta Chamberlain, the driving force behind King's success. It's a story of passion and power and success on a scale never seen before on this continent. King began his great enterprise with 15,500 acres of arid land called Rincon de Santa Gertrudis, purchased for $300 in 1853. From there it has grown to become an international legend. It was here that the great Santa Gertrudis cattle, and the indispensable western quarter horse were developed. The book also includes terrifying stories of ancient ghosts and hauntings that still imbue many of the secret places on the ranch with a sense of mystery and fear.
