The Life of Jesus Like You've Never Imagined Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do you say I am?" It's a question that still needs an answer today. With deft, insightful, and humorous strokes, award-winning biographer Jared Brock weaves archaeology, philosophy, history, and theology to create a portrait of Jesus we've never seen before. This is a groundbreaking biography about the historical Jesus we don't usually think about: The child refugee. The "carpenter" who most likely worked with stone. The adult who walked at least 21,525 miles in His lifetime and yet never tasted tomatoes or potatoes. The itinerant rabbi whose real name wasn't Jesus. The political revolutionary whose brutal murder was secretly masterminded by a power-hungry mafia family. More than a fascinating biography, A God Named Josh seeks to illuminate Jesus of Nazareth from new perspectives, grounded in history, that will surprise Christians and atheists alike. "The same wonderful story, the same incredible Savior, the same good news... but written with such clarity that everything you thought you knew about Jesus will seem new and exciting."--STEVE BROWN, founder of Key Life and author of Laughter and Lament "Prepare yourself: Jesus is about to become thrillingly, subversively, dangerously, gloriously interesting again."--MARK BUCHANAN, author of God Walk: Moving at the Speed of Your Soul
Most lifestyle books for women are saying one of two things: "Hustle!" or "Slow down!" We are either prodded into endless activity and productivity or told that what we really need is to prioritize rest, relaxation, and simply "being." Is it any wonder we feel torn in every direction, worried we're missing the opportunities God has placed before us while at the same time feeling guilty that we're doing too much? Into this confusion comes Heather MacFadyen's empowering message to simply occupy your God-given space--a Hebrew definition of humility. God has given you talents and a sphere of influence. Your role is to fill that space, empowered by the Holy Spirit. In this book, Heather presents four boundary lines to help you identify your unique God-given space and shows you how to evaluate your next steps with confident peace so that you can stop feeling exhausted and guilty and start feeling fulfilled. It's time to replace FOMO, inadequacy, and hustle culture with the satisfaction that comes from owning the space we've been assigned. Right Where You Belong helps you get there.
Looking for a guide to interpreting the Bible that is accessible, up-to-date, and theologically grounded? A renowned Old Testament scholar and coauthor of the bestselling The Drama of Scripture introduces us to reading the Bible with an ear toward hearing God's address. "When we read the Bible, we need to take off our shoes, as it were, because we are on holy ground," says Bartholomew. "We take up the Bible to read it, only to find that through it God speaks to us. This is the awesome potential of Bible reading and interpretation." Bartholomew begins with a theological orientation, including topics such as the relationship between prayer, analysis, and reading Scripture; the Bible as the true story of the whole world; and reading the text in light of its literary, historical, and kerygmatic (proclamation) dimensions. He then explores the history of interpretation before discussing how we receive the Bible liturgically, ethically, and missionally. Throughout the book, exercises in lectio divina invite readers to engage both the head and the heart as they learn to interpret the Bible. Professors and students of the Bible will value this work. It will also appeal to church leaders and other serious students of the Bible.
Investigative reporter Jillian Carter knows it's time to put the
past to rest. She's tired of looking over her shoulder, letting a
killer go free. She's no longer the scared kid who changed her name
and disappeared. Now, no matter what the cost, Jillian must do what
she is trained to do--ferret out the truth and expose it. Senator
Frank Hoffman committed murder ten years ago--and Jillian watched
it happen.
Would you ever try to drive from New York to Chicago by heading for Miami? Of course not. We all know that to get to a desired destination we have to take the right road. The same thing is true of trying to get to heaven, yet many believe that all religions lead to God. The Bible radically disagrees: - Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."1 - The early church leader, Peter, clearly proclaimed that "There is salvation in no one else [but Jesus], for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. "2 He spoke those words despite the very real risk of death by the same religious leaders who had crucified Christ weeks before! - The apostle Paul, author of several New Testament books of the Bible, wrote that "There is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all."3 - And one of Christ's disciples, John, wrote without apology, "Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life."4 The Bible, God's book, makes it clear that apart from Christ there is absolutely no way to the Father and no eternal life in heaven to look forward to. Other religions offer systems of thought that try to cross the gap between man and God, but Jesus is the only one who has bridged that divide. Christ said that "the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many," but only those who take the narrow way, via Jesus Christ, find eternal life.5 Jesus' exclusive claims Jesus claimed: "I am the way." Jesus does not merely show the way; he is the only way to God. He spans the otherwise unreachable distance between a righteous God and unrighteous sinners--us! Jesus claimed: "I am the truth." Truth implies an objective standard that does not change with the whims of time or culture. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."6 Come to Jesus, and "you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."7 Jesus claimed: "I am the life." We are spiritually dead without Jesus but become spiritually alive when we believe fully in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and never-ending life. As the Bible says, "Whoever believes in him [Jesus, God's Son] is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God."8 Christ's resurrection from the dead was the absolute proof that he was, indeed, the Son of God and the Author of life that conquers the enemy of mankind--death. Rising from the dead proved Jesus had paid the price of our sin then conquered death itself. Before he returned to heaven he met with over 500 of his followers to leave final instructions and encouragement (1 Corinthians 15:1-9) Apart from Jesus there is no way to be saved. You cannot get to heaven on your own, not even by jumping through religious hoops. The only way to reach God is to believe in Jesus who gave his life in place of ours: "Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God."9 Jesus is the way that must be taken, the truth that must be believed, and the life that must be trusted in. Will you believe in the only one who can bring you to God? Place your belief in Christ today. He promises, "whoever comes to me I will never cast out."10 If that is the sincere desire of your heart, you can use this prayer as a guide for your own words... Lord, I confess that I have sinned against you often. And I admit that I deserve to be punished for the wrongs I have done. But I believe that when Jesus died, he paid the penalty for my sins. I now ask you to forgive me and to make me a new person from the inside out. Amen. Australia's national history has rarely allowed space for the history of Aboriginal work. This void enabled the growth of conflicting racist stereotypes of Aborigines as either lazy or slave-drudges. Historical research tells us otherwise, with Aborigines demonstrably efficient workers in colonial Australia. Throughout Australia's history, they worked as domestics, pastoral and sexual workers, and in entertainment, sports and the arts. Aboriginal Workers surveys both the historical myths and the realities. It explores contested white representations of Aboriginal workers and presents an Australia-wide survey with a chronology sweeping across the full post-contact period, especially the less researched twentieth century. As well as providing valuable new material, Aboriginal Workers offers fresh insights, especially into the complex intersections of gender, race and labour. Significantly, this collection includes the perspectives of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal historians and workers. This volume has been updated with a new introduction for 2020.
What is the Key to World Evangelism? All heaven will break loose when God's glory is on display among His people--to the degree that unbelievers will say, "Wow! This is something else . . . and we want it!" So what releases God's glory in this dimension? When we understand--and live out--the unity Jesus prayed for in John 17:21-22. In Joy Dawson's engaging, conversational, forthright style, she has given us a biblical and thought-provoking case for both the need and the how-to, to live in the unity Jesus prayed for. "Joy's biblical and practical examples of the working of the Holy Spirit are inspiring and truly offer hope to anyone who believes in the power of God to unify the Body of Christ. The tone of humility with which Joy penned this work is a wonderful example to us all."--Mrs. Vonette Bright, co-founder, Campus Crusade for Christ (now Cru in the U.S.) "Joy Dawson (Mom to me) has given us possibly her most important book because it gets to the heart of what ails us as Christians, and presents the solution. I am delighted and encouraged."--John Dawson, international president emeritus, Youth With A Mission "Joy Dawson is a gifted master-teacher and prophetic voice. In a very real and dynamic sense, this book has been given to her as a 'word from heaven' and should shake us up to act upon it. It has shaken me anew."--Jack Hayford, chancellor, The King's University; founding pastor, The Church On The Way
Most believers understand that worship is not a compartmentalized aspect of the Christian experience, but rather it is the motivation--the driving force--behind all that we do and are. We exist to worship God. For years we have been basking in God's love and worshipping Him with uplifted hands and hearts. Now we need to go deeper and see that God is also an awesome, mysterious being who should engender our silent, even dumbstruck, reverence for His holiness, His "otherness." Until we are undone by the knowledge of who God is in all His glory, we will only touch the edges of true worship. Matt Redman says, "When we face up to the glory of God, we find ourselves face down in worship." This book shows the biblical record of those who found themselves prostrate before God.

While the gospel is timeless truth, it enters into ever-changing and widely varied human contexts. In order to meaningfully communicate the gospel to particular humans, those involved in cross-cultural ministry need to understand people and the particular influences--social, cultural, psychological, and ecological--that shape them. Further, we must understand ourselves and the influences that have shaped us, since our own contexts influence how we understand and transmit the gospel message. Therefore, we must master not only the skill of biblical interpretation but also the skill of human interpretation. That task is the topic of this book, the summation of a lifetime of experience and thinking by a world-renowned missiologist and anthropologist, the late Paul Hiebert.
