Category Description for Kumon Math Workbooks (1-6):
A math program based on the Kumon method. Basically, the earmarks of
this system are:
- Concepts introduced in small, incremental steps, allowing
children to master them without confusion
- Single topic books rather than mixed strands. Children
concentrate just on addition, for example, before moving to subtraction
- Concepts are taught by discovery method than being spelled
out
The series is meant to be self-directed. Students take charge of their
own learning on every level. They complete pages, check their work,
record their scores, and determine whether to move on or review. The
pace almost guarantees success. Children should work a "few" pages a
day; assignments should take about 20 minutes to complete. Pages are
marked with the skill level required at top and the points each
question is valued at (a very young child will need some help totaling
points). Very short instruction (or an example) is given on a few
pages. For example, there is a short explanation when children begin to
subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number where borrowing is
needed. However, the child is given every opportunity to intuit this
beforehand. By the time he reaches this page, he has already been
subtracting double-digit numbers for many pages. Some of these would
require borrowing, but, since they are able to subtract, say, 7 from
12, the Kumon method wants the child to see a pattern when increasing
to 7 from 22, 7 from 32, etc. This does remind me of the approach used
in Miquon as well. Besides these very infrequent helps there are just
some small prompts for children to look for patterns in their answers,
and words of encouragement. Pages are pleasing to the eye; they are
colored, clean, and problems are well-spaced. The Kumon method has been
used successfully with children around the world for over 50 years. It
does seem like it would help a child to take charge of his own learning
and help himself to understanding rather than being spoon-fed each
bite. For Kumon math earlier than Grade 1, see the Kumon section in
Early Learning.

It's springtime in this charming, busy town and there is a lot
going on! A house gets a top-to-bottom spring cleaning and farm
fields are being prepared for planting. People are shopping,
commuting to work, constructing buildings, and meeting friends. If
you look closer, you'll recognize the same characters appear on
every page, each with their own story. There's Wilfred the jogger
slipping on a banana peel and his friend Erica who comes to help
him. Three cheerful nuns shop, chat, and share a snack at the cafe.
A stork surveys all the activity from the sky while a mischievous
fox scampers through the streets. In the tradition of Richard
Scarry and Where's Waldo, this book encourages kids to return again
and again to each spread, following along with the characters and
inventing their own stories. They'll recognize parts of their own
world, while also learning about the endless ways we live, work,
and play in the spring.

Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's 1940 painting, Sky Blue, this
delightful children's book delves into the kaleidoscopic mind of a
sleeping giant. Author Ve ronique Massenot and illustrator Peggy
Nille interpret Kandinsky's abstract characters as the somnolent
visions of a giant who stumbles into a village of microscopic
townspeople. Though the villagers initially fear the enormous
stranger, they soon discover a gentle soul through his beautiful
dreams. With its brightly colored palette and playful drawings,
this wonderfully imaginative book echoes Kandinsky's lively style.
As young readers explore the wonders of the miniature villagers'
world and the colossal giant's imagination, they will be inspired
to find their own way around Kandinsky's enigmatic masterpiece.
A paean to play from an award-winning poet and a "New York Times
"best-selling illustrator. The trappings of childhood change from
generation to generation, but there are some timeless activities
that every kid loves. Marilyn Singer and LeUyen Pham celebrate

hide-and-seek and hopscotch to imaginative play such as making mud
soup or turning a stick into a magic wand. Lyrical poems and bold
illustrations capture the energy of a group of children in one
neighborhood as they amuse themselves over the course of a summer
day. At a time when childhood obesity rates are soaring and money
is tight for many families, here is a book that invites readers to
join in the fun of active play with games that cost nothing.
Contains one wooden element and memo games according to each theme. Read, play and learn!
