This study looks at how the Soviet armed forces developed and deployed a range of machine guns that fitted with their offensive and defensive infantry tactics across six years of total war. In 1939, three machine guns dominated the Red Army's front-line infantry firepower - the DShK 1938 heavy machine gun, the PM M1910 medium/heavy machine gun and the Degtyaryov DP-27, a lighter, bipod-mounted support weapon. Sand, Planes and Submarines is an unlikely title for a book about the role two small towns far from the sea played in the First World War. Yet this extraordinary account tells how Leighton Buzzard and Linslade provided the means to shorten the war. Without the sand, the big guns could not have been made for the Front; the planes allowed the Royal Flying Corps to take on the superior German air force; and the submarine nets protected not only the British fleet but also the French, Italians, Americans and Russians. The two towns were changed dramatically by the war. They ceased to be the playground of the rich from London. The army requisitioned the hundreds of thoroughbred horses that had been used by the aristocracy to hunt with the Rothschilds. Among these larger themes there are many personal stories like that of the Linslade postman and his horse, Bluebell, who took part in the last great cavalry charge of the war.

The breech-loading, single-shot .458in Martini-Henry rifle has become a symbol of both the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and the numerous battles in Egypt and the Sudan in 1884-85, but continued to be used by both British and colonial troops well into the 20th century. Its invention and introduction into British service were in direct response to the success of the Prussian Dreyse needle gun, which demonstrated that the breech-loading rifle offered faster loading, improved accuracy and superior range; significantly, the weapon could be loaded and fired from a prone position, thus offering the rifleman greater security on the battlefield. Due to the longevity of service, many Martini-Henry rifles survive today, both in museums and in private collections, and the weapon is highly prized by shooting enthusiasts.
