The Macroeconomics of Open Economies Under Labour Mobility (Hardcover): George M. Agiomirgianakis The Macroeconomics of Open Economies Under Labour Mobility (Hardcover)
George M. Agiomirgianakis
R1,944 Discovery Miles 19 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1999, this study recognises the importance of international labour mobility for modern economics. This is in large part due to its effects on the size, age structure and skills of the labour force, the human flow between countries and the expected rise in scale as a result of income differentials, demographic pressures and differential labour-force growth rates along with developments in transport and communications. These migrations are increasingly volatile and unpredictable, whilst being concentrated in regions like Australia, the USA, Sub-Saharan Africa and Western Europe. Given the extensive literature on the microeconomic view, George M. Agiomirgianakis aims to extend the debate on open economy macroeconomics through an exploration of international labour mobilities and their effects on open economies with flexible exchange rates.

Readings in Applied Microeconomic Theory - Market Forces and Solutions (Paperback): R Kuenne Readings in Applied Microeconomic Theory - Market Forces and Solutions (Paperback)
R Kuenne
R1,759 Discovery Miles 17 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Readings in Applied Microeconomic Theory: Market Forces and Solutions" presents both classic articles fundamental to microeconomic analysis as well as modern treatments of frontier issues in applied theory. Complementary standard textbook treatments, the readings and their bibliographies offer further coverage of fields such as game theory, decision making under uncertainty theory, and auction theory.

Designed for students in advanced microeconomic theory, the book is accessible to students with diverse mathematical backgrounds. Although some selections contain mathematical treatments higher than the standard advanced level, all text presentation can stand alone to explain the material.

The book concentrates on the forces generated by the market economy and the nature of the solutions created to deal with them. Kuenne's complementary "Readings in Social Welfare: Theory and Policy" examines solutions to social welfare issues.

Microfinance, EU Structural Funds and Capacity Building for Managing Authorities - A Comparative Analysis of European... Microfinance, EU Structural Funds and Capacity Building for Managing Authorities - A Comparative Analysis of European Convergence Regions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Pasqualina Porretta, Giovanni Pes
R764 Discovery Miles 7 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years, the European Commission has attached increasing importance to the use of financial engineering instruments rather than traditional grant-based financing for the microcredit sector, considering these to be the most efficient option available. This book presents a study of capacity building and structural funds in public managing authorities for the microcredit sector. It presents two surveys to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the managing authorities' capacity building. The first survey investigates the authorities' need for and interests in capacity building activities, assessing the areas in which capacity building support is needed, and explores the different types of support offered. The second survey analyses the results of the microcredit and microfinance programming activity, investigating its target groups and other operational features. It examines the key monitoring and reporting issues involved in this activity, before analysing the regulatory framework of the microcredit and microfinance sector. This book presents an in-depth analysis of structural funds and their management by policy-makers in the European convergence regions. It explores the interests of managing authorities, microcredit institutions, operators and other financial intermediaries involved in microcredit programming activities, and offers some core strategic and operational recommendations for the use of structural funds in the microcredit sector.

Understanding Business Processes (Paperback, New): David Barnes Understanding Business Processes (Paperback, New)
David Barnes
R1,721 Discovery Miles 17 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What do business organizations do? The results of business behaviour can be observed and experienced in the form of the goods that are produced. However what goes on within organizations is often hidden from the outside world. This reader enables the student to make sense of business behaviour by offering an understanding of what organizations do. The book is underpinned by a systems perspective and takes a process view of organizations. This enables it to demonstrate that any business is a number of interrelated business processes and that success is determined by the extent to which these activities add value whilst minimising cost. Specifically the book focuses on: activities through which the organization interacts with its customers including marketing and sales; how organizations process materials including purchasing and manufacturing; and forms of business organization, with a critical account of new paradigms including business process re-engineering. The book features articles by leading business gurus including Michael Porter, Philip Kotler and John Kay.

Selected Works of Joseph E. Stiglitz - Volume III: Rethinking Microeconomics (Hardcover): Joseph E. Stiglitz Selected Works of Joseph E. Stiglitz - Volume III: Rethinking Microeconomics (Hardcover)
Joseph E. Stiglitz
R4,759 Discovery Miles 47 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the third volume in a new, definitive, six-volume edition of the works of Joseph Stiglitz, one of today's most distinguished and controversial economists. Stiglitz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2001 for his work on asymmetric information and is widely acknowledged as one of the pioneers in the field of modern information economics and more generally for his contributions to microeconomics. Volume III contains a selection of Joseph E. Stiglitz's work on microeconomics. It questions well-established tenets, including many that are so fundamental they are almost taken for granted, covering basic concepts of risk and markets; the management of risk; the theory of the firm; the economics of organization; and theory of human behaviour. Stiglitz reflects on his work and the field more generally throughout the volume by including substantial original introductions to the Selected Works, the volume as a whole, and each part within the volume.

Foreign Direct Investment and Technology Transfer in the Former Soviet Union (Hardcover): David A. Dyker Foreign Direct Investment and Technology Transfer in the Former Soviet Union (Hardcover)
David A. Dyker
R3,894 Discovery Miles 38 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the impact of foreign investment on selected sectors of two key transition economies - Russia and the Ukraine - to explain the effect of foreign direct investment on the transitional economy. It examines how key Western players in the international investment business have chosen whether to invest in the former Soviet Union and applies these findings to sectors within Russia and the Ukraine. Whilst recognizing the tremendous importance of foreign direct investment (FDI) as a means to upgrade technology in transition conditions, the study also examines the importance of FDI in internationalizing production. The authors question the difference globalization can make to a transition economy in a situation where domestic investment is not recovering, and where there is still no clear-cut upward trend in levels of production.

Economics for an Information Age - Money-Bargaining, Support-Bargaining and the Information Interface (Hardcover): Patrick... Economics for an Information Age - Money-Bargaining, Support-Bargaining and the Information Interface (Hardcover)
Patrick Spread
R4,220 Discovery Miles 42 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Economics for an Information Age examines the central role of information within economics and society. The neoclassical economic model, taught as 'mainstream economics' in universities around the world, relies on a mathematical model of 'resource allocation' in which private advantage gives rise to public advantage in the shape of an optimal allocation of resources. However, this model assumes 'perfect information'. In the present 'information age' such an assumption is even farther from the reality than it was in the past. People disseminate and manipulate information to further their interests. This book explains economic behaviour in terms of a theory of 'money-bargaining' and political and intellectual 'support-bargaining', in which the dissemination of information plays a central role. It uses this lens to explain how information is created, manipulated, disseminated, organised, understood, interpreted, used, bought and sold. This book will be of interest to mainstream and heterodox economists alike, as well as historians of economic thought, and anyone who seeks to better understand the impact of the information age on economic behaviour.

Bread and the British Economy, 1770-1870 (Paperback): Christian Petersen, Andrew Jenkins Bread and the British Economy, 1770-1870 (Paperback)
Christian Petersen, Andrew Jenkins
R1,541 Discovery Miles 15 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this ambitious book Christian Petersen has taken a central topic in economic and social history and given it a new sweep and coherence. As the Lord's Prayer suggests, securing an adequate supply of bread was a matter of over-riding concern to everyone until very recently. Bread was always by far the largest single item in the budgets of the poor, but bread could be made from many grains - wheat, rye, barley etc. Christian Petersen describes how in the later eighteenth century the process of replacing other cereals by wheat in bread making was completed throughout Britain. He provides a continuous series of estimates of bread consumption per caput, of bread prices (and, consequently, used in conjunction with population data, of total national expenditure on bread), and of wheat output and net imports. The implications of the changes in techniques of milling and baking that occurred are analysed, and the organisation of the baking and retailing of bread is described. Bread was so central to the economy of individual households and to the national economy as a whole that this book represents a major contribution to the history of the British economy and of British society in the period 1770-1870.

Luis C. Corchon, Marco A Marini
R1,517 Discovery Miles 15 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Game theory explores situations in which agents interact strategically and provides a useful foundation for studying many traditional industrial organization topics.
