India's Emerging Energy Relations - Issues and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Girijesh Pant India's Emerging Energy Relations - Issues and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Girijesh Pant
R2,743 R1,843 Discovery Miles 18 430 Save R900 (33%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyzes the role of energy in Indian foreign policy, particularly in defining bilateral relations. It also focuses on the critical gaps in conceptualizing its formulations and recommends a framework for sustainable energy security. India, the fourth largest consumer of oil, is an energy-deficit economy, importing more than eighty percent of its needs. This makes securing energy integral to its foreign policy goals. Obviously it is important for India to actively participate in the global energy market and establish robust, enduring and nuanced diplomatic relations with energy exporting countries. Equally important is that India diversifies its energy mix and moves towards carbon-free growth. Renewable energy is today high on the global energy agenda. Indian energy policy thus has to address a range of issues, domestically and on foreign turf. It has to move beyond the transactional mode by creating equity in the global energy industry. Today, the global energy regime is undergoing fundamental changes, as is the power dynamics of the global energy order. There are now many new producers and diverse consumers. The trade in energy has increased in volume and its direction has shifted from the West to the East, and the ongoing structural changes in the energy market call for a new security architecture. Given the complex and competitive environment of the new geo-economics and geopolitics of energy, the question could well be, should India frame energy issues in conflict mode or move toward innovative cooperation? In either case the message is that India needs an integrated energy security policy.

The Challenge of the Digital Economy - Markets, Taxation and Appropriate Economic Models (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Francesco... The Challenge of the Digital Economy - Markets, Taxation and Appropriate Economic Models (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Francesco Boccia, Robert Leonardi
R4,187 Discovery Miles 41 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents contributions that analyse the extraordinary impact of digital technology on business, services, and the production of value in many sectors of the economy. At the heart of this book is the fact that the entire digital economy is now worth almost 6% of global GDP, and it continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. The volume covers the general debate on taxation and the digital economy with the chapters by Russo, Makiyama and Boccia, before completing the analysis with discussion of three national case studies covering the U.S. (Pagano), U.K. (Leonardi) and Italy (Boccia and Leonardi). Contributors are leading experts in the fields of taxation and the digital economy and contextualise the key issues surrounding the digitalisation of the economy from an international perspective.

China's Rise and the Development of Asian Regional Integration (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Jianglin Zhao, Yuzhu Wang,... China's Rise and the Development of Asian Regional Integration (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Jianglin Zhao, Yuzhu Wang, Xiaobing Zhou, Zhongyuan Zhang
R2,893 Discovery Miles 28 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book focuses on the market issues facing Asian industrialization and the possibility, feasibility, and sustainability of China integrating the Asian economics. How China's rise affects Asian market and the economic relation between China and other Asian economies? The book looks into this issue from market and regional perspectives and concludes that: Asian industrialization including China makes the unified regional market as the common goal of Asian economies; the integration of Asian markets is also a key strategy for China in the next 5-10 years; China may become a major player or even a leader in integrating regional markets; however, it will be a longtime process depending on China's economic strength in the future.

Coherence and Divergence in Services Trade Law (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Rhea Tamara Hoffmann, Markus Krajewski Coherence and Divergence in Services Trade Law (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Rhea Tamara Hoffmann, Markus Krajewski
R4,716 Discovery Miles 47 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book addresses topical questions concerning the legal framework of trade in services, and assesses how these issues are dealt with in GATS and in selected preferential trade agreements. In addition, the chapters discuss whether the differences and similarities (if any) are evidence of greater coherence or greater divergence. The book combines the individual analyses to provide a more comprehensive picture of the current law on services trade liberalisation.A quarter of a century after the conclusion of the General Agreement on Trade and Services (GATS), international law on trade in services is still in a state of flux: on the one hand, countries increasingly conclude bilateral and regional trade agreements with sections on trade in services that aim at a further liberalisation of services trade. On the other, the GATS structure remains the dominant model and serves as the basis for many preferential trade agreements. In addition, new aspects such as electronic commerce, data protection and taxation are now emerging, while issues that had already manifested in the mid-1990s such as financial services regulation, labour mobility, and telecommunications continue to be problematic. Usually, the debates focus on the question of whether preferential trade agreements serve as a stepping-stone or stumbling block for trade liberalisation at the multilateral level. However, it can be assumed that rules on trade in services in preferential trade agreements will coexist with the global GATS regime for the foreseeable future. This raises the question of whether we're currently witnessing a drive towards greater coherence or more divergence in agreements on trade in services.

Positive Integration - EU and WTO Approaches Towards the "Trade and" Debate (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Rike Kramer-Hoppe Positive Integration - EU and WTO Approaches Towards the "Trade and" Debate (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Rike Kramer-Hoppe
R4,011 Discovery Miles 40 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents a new framework for the 'trade and environment' debate and discusses the ways in which the EU and the WTO address this topic: positive, negative and non-integration. It analyses areas like food safety and renewable energy from the perspectives of legal and political science, and economics, and includes contributions focusing on various approaches, such as harmonisation, regulatory cooperation and judicialisation. In the 21st century, especially in our current times, where free trade and economic integration are increasingly being called into question, it is even more vital to find convincing normative answers and ways to address the very complex relationship between trade and environmental policies. Debunking some of the myths concerning positive and negative integration and the relationship between the two, this book is a valuable contribution to the debate on globalisation.

Building Business in Post-Communist Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia - Collective Goods, Selective Incentives, and Predatory... Building Business in Post-Communist Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia - Collective Goods, Selective Incentives, and Predatory States (Hardcover, New)
Dinissa Duvanova
R2,548 Discovery Miles 25 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Prior to 1989, the communist countries of Eastern Europe and the USSR lacked genuine employer and industry associations. After the collapse of communism, industry associations mushroomed throughout the region. Duvanova argues that abusive regulatory regimes discourage the formation of business associations and poor regulatory enforcement tends to encourage associational membership growth. Academic research often treats special interest groups as vehicles of protectionism and non-productive collusion. This book challenges this perspective with evidence of market-friendly activities by industry associations and their benign influence on patterns of public governance. Careful analysis of cross-national quantitative data spanning more than 25 countries, and qualitative examination of business associations in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Croatia, shows that postcommunist business associations function as substitutes for state and private mechanisms of economic governance. These arguments and empirical findings put the long-standing issues of economic regulations, public goods and collective action in a new theoretical perspective.

Governing Globalization - Issues and Institutions (Hardcover): Deepak Nayyar Governing Globalization - Issues and Institutions (Hardcover)
Deepak Nayyar
R5,696 Discovery Miles 56 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This timely book is the first to examine in depth the governance needs of the world economy and polity. It evaluates the experience of institutions, with a focus on the UN, the IMF, the World Bank, and the WTO, to sketch the contours of reform and change necessary in the existing system. It analyses issues of emerging significance, such as global macroeconomic management, transnational corporations, international capital movements, and cross-border movements of people, to suggest that there are some missing institutions which are needed.

Changing the Indian Economy - Renewal, Reform and Revival (Paperback): Rama P. Kanungo, Chris Rowley, Anurag N. Banerjee Changing the Indian Economy - Renewal, Reform and Revival (Paperback)

Changing the Indian Economy: Renewal, Reform and Revival explores the fact that post-Modi India is witnessing unprecedented socioeconomic change, truly labeled as Modi's Mantra and his attempts to morph the Indian economic landscape. India is using an intelligent economic process for its renewal and growth, however, in a recent study by Nomura, 2016, The Japanese Financial Services firm, it is reported that there is downside risk to India's baseline forecast of 7.8 per cent GDP growth in 2016. Although the report suggests that there was a mid-cycle consolidation in mid-2014, the recovery seems to be losing momentum. This book offers a novel, but inclusive outlook to the entire post-Modi economic overhaul.

Aid, Trade and Development - The Future of Globalization (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2022): Constantine Michalopoulos Aid, Trade and Development - The Future of Globalization (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2022)
Constantine Michalopoulos
R2,927 Discovery Miles 29 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume presents a broad sweep of modern economic history underpinning aid, trade, development and globalization in the last half century and the salient challenges facing the global community today. The author draws on his long years as an academic and development practitioner to recommend what needs to be done to cope with the backsliding of the fight against global poverty, fractured geopolitics and the threats to the multilateral economic order. The new, revised edition analyses how unilateralism, rising protectionism and the Covid-19 pandemic seriously threaten global sustainable development. It concludes with recommendations on the policy changes needed to make globalization more equitable and development more sustainable. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of economic development and economic history, as well as all those concerned about global inequality and sustainability.

Bank Failures in the Major Trading Countries of the World - Causes and Remedies (Hardcover): Benton E. Gup Bank Failures in the Major Trading Countries of the World - Causes and Remedies (Hardcover)
Benton E. Gup
R2,801 R2,535 Discovery Miles 25 350 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bank failures, near failures, and crises are common throughout the world, and particularly in the major G-10 trading countries, including the United States, Germany, and Japan. But equally common are the bailouts by national governments, when they perceive that bank failure will result in severe economic distress. Gup examines these events, focusing on happenings in the particularly volatile years since 1980, and finds that nonperforming real estate loans, even more than fraud, are the primary cause. His wide-ranging investigation casts doubt on the effectiveness of bank regulation and makes clear that with globalization and emerging technologies, change in regulatory methods is needed. This book is essential for scholars, students as well as professionals in international banking, finance, investment, and world trade.

Laurent Ferrara, Ignacio Hernando, Daniela Marconi
R4,723 Discovery Miles 47 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book collects selected articles addressing several currently debated issues in the field of international macroeconomics. They focus on the role of the central banks in the debate on how to come to terms with the long-term decline in productivity growth, insufficient aggregate demand, high economic uncertainty and growing inequalities following the global financial crisis. Central banks are of considerable importance in this debate since understanding the sluggishness of the recovery process as well as its implications for the natural interest rate are key to assessing output gaps and the monetary policy stance. The authors argue that a more dynamic domestic and external aggregate demand helps to raise the inflation rate, easing the constraint deriving from the zero lower bound and allowing monetary policy to depart from its current ultra-accommodative position. Beyond macroeconomic factors, the book also discusses a supportive financial environment as a precondition for the rebound of global economic activity, stressing that understanding capital flows is a prerequisite for economic-policy decisions.

Foreign Direct Investment in Japan - Multinationals' Role in Growth and Globalization (Paperback): Ralph Paprzycki, Kyoji... Foreign Direct Investment in Japan - Multinationals' Role in Growth and Globalization (Paperback)
Ralph Paprzycki, Kyoji Fukao
R934 Discovery Miles 9 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Foreign Direct Investment in Japan presents a detailed examination of trends of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) and their impact on the Japanese economy. Historically much less open to foreign trade and investment than other major economies, Japan experienced an unprecedented jump in FDI inflows around the turn of the millennium. This book looks at the profound changes in Japan that made this jump possible and considers foreign firms' potential contribution to productivity and overall economic growth. Detailed case studies illustrate that in certain sectors the presence of foreign firms already is a key factor shaping industry dynamics. Yet, despite recent changes, resistance to inward FDI remains strong and the government could do much more if it were committed to attracting FDI. Overall, Japan continues to appear reluctant to embrace fully, and therefore seems unlikely to benefit even more substantially from, globalization.
