The Politics of Regime Complexity in International Derivatives Regulation (Hardcover): Lucia Quaglia The Politics of Regime Complexity in International Derivatives Regulation (Hardcover)
Lucia Quaglia
R2,731 Discovery Miles 27 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides the first comprehensive account of post-crisis international regulation of derivatives by bringing together the international relations literature on regime complexity and the international political economy literature on financial regulation. It addresses three questions: What factors drove international standard-setting on derivatives post-crisis? Why did international regime complexity emerge? And how was it managed and with what outcomes? This research innovatively combines a state-centric, a transgovernmental, and business-led explanations. It examines all the main sets of standards (or elemental regimes) concerning various aspects of derivatives markets, namely: trading, clearing, and reporting of derivatives; resilience, recovery and resolution of central counterparties; capital requirements for bank exposures to central counterparties and derivatives; margins for derivatives non-centrally cleared. It is argued that regime complexity in derivatives ensued from the multi-dimensionality and the interlinkages of the problems to tackle, especially given the fact that it was a new policy area without a focal international standard-setter. Despite these challenges, international cooperation resulted in relatively precise, stringent, and consistent rules, even though there was variation across standards. The main jurisdictions played an important role in managing regime complexity, but their effectiveness was constrained by limited domestic coordination. Networks of regulators gathered in international standard-setting bodies deployed a variety of formal and informal coordination tools to deal with regime complexity. The financial industry, at times, lobbied for less precise and stringent rules and engaged in 'venue shopping', whereas, other times, it contributed to the quest for regulatory consistency.

R557 R512 Discovery Miles 5 120 Save R45 (8%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As a leader in your organization, you will be very familiar with your organization's key financial statements and monthly management reports. You may have spent countless hours discussing budgets and expenditures. But how much time have you spent reflecting on the fact that these revenues are generated by actual customers-the people who pull out their wallets and pay for your products and services? In The Customer-Base Audit: The First Step on the Journey to Customer Centricity, experts Peter Fader, Bruce Hardie, and Michael Ross start you on the path toward really getting to understand your customers' buying behavior as well as the health of your overall customer base. A customer-base audit is a systematic review of the buying behavior of a firm's customers using data captured by its transaction systems. It will help you answer questions such as: -- How healthy is your customer base? How realistic are your growth objectives? -- How do your customers differ in terms of their behavior and value? -- How has the quality of your customers changed over time? -- What changes in customer behavior lie behind period-to-period changes in firm performance? -- What is important to your high-value customers? Which products help you acquire and retain your best customers? Fader, Hardie, and Ross present five "lenses" through which an executive can address questions like those above. The answers are often lurking in various parts of the organization, but it is rare to find all the relevant analyses in one place, let alone performed on a regular basis (as an audit should be). Yet without such a basic, systematic understanding of the foundations of the firm's primary source of cash flow, how can executives make informed decisions? Fader, a Wharton professor, is the author of Customer Centricity and coauthor of The Customer Centricity Playbook, both of which have helped businesses radically rethink how they relate to customers. In this first step of the journey, Fader, Hardie, and Ross assist leaders in gaining a fundamental understanding of their customers' buying behavior-and thus their company as a whole.

American Exceptionalism - Economics, Finance, Political Economy, and Economic Laws (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Lall Ramrattan,... American Exceptionalism - Economics, Finance, Political Economy, and Economic Laws (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Lall Ramrattan, Michael Szenberg
R2,690 Discovery Miles 26 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The publication of Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America has kindled interest across disciplines to appraise the exceptional nature of U.S. activities. In general, however, all the published works have not focused their analyses from an economic point of view. While economics was for some a "dismal science" following Thomas Carlyle's characterization of Malthus' demographic model, it has increasingly become the "queen of the social sciences" for more practitioners. The book fills a gap in the literature by describing the American contributors as precursors and genuinely exceptional economists. We present their works within the state of the nation in which they advance their discipline.One is treated to both qualitative and quantitative theories in the opening chapter. Budding theories that became established theories of Economics and Finance are investigated in Chapters II and III. When President John Adams was confronted with M. Turgot's criticisms of the American government, he resorted to a historic survey of types of government from ancient Greece to the Middle Ages. Similarly, we have included a final chapter, Chapter IV, to present the argument for American Exceptionalism in the domain of Political Economy and Economic Law over the ages.

Securitization and the Global Economy - History and Prospects for the Future (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Bonnie G. Buchanan Securitization and the Global Economy - History and Prospects for the Future (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Bonnie G. Buchanan
R3,848 Discovery Miles 38 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the controversial issue of securitization in a global, historical context. It traces its origins and compares evidence of securitization across countries, linking differences to variations in legal, political, and cultural regimes. By incorporating the history and current status of securitization (including sources of value and risk) with alternative markets and future outlooks for the global market, Buchanan provides an overall assessment of the costs, benefits, and sustainability of securitization in the global economy, particularly in the aftermath of the 2007-2009 financial crisis. The book also offers a roadmap for future research. As financial regulators around the world plan a sweeping overhaul of securitization markets with tough new rules designed to restore market confidence, it is essential to consider the global outlook for securitization.

Moreover, they acquire a number of useful mathematical and computational tools, such as stochastic differential equations, path integrals, Monte-Carlo methods, and basic cryptology. Each chapter ends with a set of carefully designed exercises enabling readers to test their comprehension.

Since the 2008 economic crisis, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have faced serious financial problems and have been looking to financial institutions and governments for solutions and new proposals to address these issues. This book examines the new challenge in which firms receive sustainable funding that is in alignment with the company's spending capacity. The purpose of this book is to examine the main theoretical issues and practices regarding entrepreneurship and finance and their impact on performance, innovation and economic growth. It analyzes the fundamental aspects of entrepreneurship and studies ways in which financial institutions can better fulfill their primary function of feeding capital to businesses and the economy as a whole. Entrepreneurship and finance are fundamental to achieving success in economic and social activities. SMEs' existence and development depend on the initiatives of entrepreneurship and access to resources, especially those of a financial nature. During the recent economic crisis, several new financing instruments have appeared, especially with structures designed for helping SMEs make their way out of the recession. This book explores some of these tools in various global economies, such as France and Spain, providing an international, multidimensional perspective.

Bubbles and Contagion in Financial Markets, Volume 1 - An Integrative View (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): E. Porras Bubbles and Contagion in Financial Markets, Volume 1 - An Integrative View (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
E. Porras
R2,060 Discovery Miles 20 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Understanding the formation of bubbles and the contagion mechanisms afflicting financial markets is a must as extreme volatility events leave no market untouched. Debt, equity, real estate, commodities... Shanghai, NY, or London: The severe fluctuations, explained to a large extent by contagion and the fear of new bubbles imploding, justify the newly awaken interest in the contagion and bubble dynamics as yet again the world brazes for a new global economic upheaval. Bubbles and Contagion in Financial Markets explores concepts, intuition, theory, and models. Fundamental valuation, share price development in the presence of asymmetric information, the speculative behavior of noise traders and chartists, herding and the feedback and learning mechanisms that surge within the markets are key aspects of these dynamics. Bubbles and contagion are a vast world and fascinating phenomena that escape a narrow exploration of financial markets. Hence this work looks beyond into macroeconomics, monetary policy, risk aggregation, psychology, incentive structures and many more subjects which are in part co-responsible for these events. Responding to the ever more pressing need to disentangle the dynamics by which financial local events are transmitted across the globe, this volume presents an exhaustive and integrative outlook to the subject of bubbles and contagion in financial markets. The key objective of this volume is to give the reader a comprehensive understanding of all aspects that can potentially create the conditions for the formation and bursting of bubbles, and the aftermath of such events: the contagion of macro-economic processes. Achieving a better understanding of the formation of bubbles and the impact of contagion will no doubt determine the stability of future economies - let these two volumes be the starting point for a rational approach to a seemingly irrational phenomena.

Satyendra Nayak
R2,332 R1,972 Discovery Miles 19 720 Save R360 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Financial Crisis, though originating in the US, is global and comparable with the Great Depression of the 1930s. The book takes both micro and macro view of the crisis. It examines the evolution of the global monetary system and looks at the crisis from a systemic angle. It examines the institutional changes in American capitalism and market mechanisms. The dynamics of the market and its cyclical characters are discussed. It examines the structural changes in the US economy. The role of globalization and international funds flow, their changing character and the growing interdependence among nations have been examined. At the micro level, the book discusses the subprime market and the gaps in the system that created the crisis. It deals with the supervisory structure and growing influence of the derivatives market and the synthetic products that are threatening the financial system. It also analyzes the fundamental changes in the global trading and payments patterns, which are influencing the US balance of payments and the US dollar. The secular changes in the structure of the US economy are impacting the global economy. The work deals with the measures taken to resolve the crisis both in the US and on a global scale. The reforms necessary to avoid the recurrence of the crisis are outlined. The study aims to underline these factors and draw a perspective for the US dollar. It is also proposed to draw a scenario for a more efficient and equitable global monetary system with a role for the US dollar along with a new vehicle for international payments and finance. This would also include the reform of the global economic system and the IMF. The special feature of the book is that it takes a holistic view of the problem. The systemic and macro issues are discussed in addition to its microanalysis.

How Ideas Move - Theories and Models of Translation in Organizations (Paperback): John Damm Scheuer How Ideas Move - Theories and Models of Translation in Organizations (Paperback)
John Damm Scheuer
R1,301 Discovery Miles 13 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book builds on research in translation studies of change in organizations and demonstrates the implications and application of these findings for managing innovation and change. When implementing ideas into practice in order to carry out innovative change, translation is key. From strategic and leadership changes to policy and health management decisions, abstract ideas such as 'LEAN', 'CSR', 'Sustainability', 'Public-Private Partnerships', 'Clinical Pathways' and 'AI' are introduced to improve organizational processes. However, in any company and organization, miscommunication and misinterpretation can lead to these ideas being modified, added to and appropriated in ways that make them unsuccessful. This book presents a case for change ideas in organizations being translated rather than "implemented" and offers a profound understanding of the translation processes needed in order for this to succeed. This vital study is a must-read for researchers, students and practitioners including change agents, general and health care managers, public servants as well as strategic managers and policy decision-makers.

Marian Gorynia, Barbara Jankowska, Katarzyna Mroczek-Dabrowska
R1,288 Discovery Miles 12 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Following the British referendum held on June 23, 2016, voters supported the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union (EU) (Brexit), a starting point for the third round of European crisis, following the eurozone debt crisis and the migration crisis. This volume provides an overview of the process and consequences of Brexit for EU member states, with an emphasis on possible future EU-UK relations, and a particular focus on countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The authors assess the extent to which firms in CEE states have already put in place strategies to counter the new economic reality post-Brexit and identify the strategies that firms are exploiting to better cope with the anticipated implications of Brexit. The book includes a ranking of countries most and least likely to be affected by Brexit; identification of the main determinants of the expansion of companies on the British market and the creation of a typology of strategies used by these companies in the face of Brexit. The book stands out as a complex and multidimensional research work that draws its roots from distinct yet simultaneously interlinked research areas. It will find a broad audience among academics and students across diverse fields of study, as well as practitioners and policy makers. It is a key reference for all those who want to better understand the complex nature of Brexit and its implications, not only for EU member states but, first and foremost, the business environment.

Giulio M Gallarotti
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about how the rise of democracy has transformed economics over the past 150 years. As voting was expanded to the masses in the late 19th century, political leaders faced emergent pressures to deliver prosperity to their newly enfranchised populations. This led to the rise of the guardian state: a state whose prime directive was to protect economic growth and employment. Domestic economic goals now became sacrosanct, and if that meant a failure on the international stage to construct solutions to problems in monetary relations, so be it. The book traces the history of international monetary diplomacy during this long period to show how the guardian state has manifested itself, and how it has shaped the course of international monetary relations. Each of the most important international monetary conferences in history is scrutinized with respect to how nations sought to protect the prosperity within their national economies. The historical narratives give a bird's-eye view into how domestic political priorities have intruded on and shaped economic relations among nations. The book clearly demonstrates the advantages of an interdisciplinary understanding of how politics shapes economics. It will be invaluable reading for scholars and students of international economics, politics and economic history.

Finance For Non-Financial Managers (Paperback, 3rd Edition): Johan Marx, Sam Ngwenya, Gerhard Grebe Finance For Non-Financial Managers (Paperback, 3rd Edition)
Johan Marx, Sam Ngwenya, Gerhard Grebe 5
R454 Discovery Miles 4 540 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

The role of a financial manager is to maintain a firm's liquidity and solvency by providing the cash flows necessary to satisfy its obligations and acquiring and financing the current and fixed assets needed to achieve its goals. However, the management of a firm's assets is not exclusively in the hands of a financial manager. Other functional departments, especially purchasing and marketing, play a significant role.

Finance For Non-Financial Managers thus provides an understanding of the principles of financial management as required to contribute favourably to the long-term success of a firm. Finance for non-financial managers explains the financial goals of a firm and illustrates how the principles of finance should be applied in creating wealth as opposed to simply maximising profit. With its ideal for anyone who has little or no prior knowledge of accounting or financial management.

In particular, Finance For Non-Financial Managers deals with the following:

  • the long-term goal of creating value and the short-term goals of profitability and liquidity;
  • analysing and interpreting financial statements;
  • using a financial calculator;
  • managing cash flow (liquidity), accounts receivable and inventory (stock).

Finance For Non-Financial Managers is aimed at managers involved in marketing, human resources, information technology and supply chain management, and for professionals such as engineers, architects, attorneys and medical professionals in private practice.
