Icons and Idiots - Straight Talk on Leadership (Paperback): Bob Lutz Icons and Idiots - Straight Talk on Leadership (Paperback)
Bob Lutz
R607 R524 Discovery Miles 5 240 Save R83 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Bob Lutz retired from General Motors in 2010, after an unparalleled forty-seven-year career in the auto industry, he was one of the most respected leaders in American business. He had survived all kinds of managers over those decades: tough and timid, analytical and irrational, charismatic and antisocial, and some who seemed to shift frequently among all those traits. His experiences made him an expert on leadership, every bit as much as he was an expert on cars and trucks.
Now Lutz is revealing the leaders--good, bad, and ugly--who made the strongest impression on him throughout his career. "Icons and Idiots" is a collection of shocking and often hilarious true stories and the lessons Lutz drew from them. From enduring the sadism of a Marine Corps drill instructor, to working with a washed-up alcoholic, to taking over the reins from a convicted felon, he reflects on the complexities of all-too-human leaders. No textbook or business school course can fully capture their idiosyncrasies, foibles and weaknesses - which can make or break companies in the real world.
Lutz shows that we can learn just as much from the most stubborn, stupid, and corrupt leaders as we can from the inspiring geniuses. He offers fascinating profiles of icons and idiots such as... Eberhard von Kuenheim. The famed CEO of BMW was an aristocrat-cum-street fighter who ruled with secrecy, fear, and deft maneuvering.Harold A. "Red" Poling A Ford CEO and the ultimate bean counter. If it couldn't be quantified, he didn't want to know about it.Lee Iacocca The legendary Chrysler CEO appeared to be brillant and bold, but was often vulnerable and insecure behind the scenes.G. Richard "Rick" Wagoner The perfect peacetime CEO whose superior intelligence couldn't save GM from steep decline and a government bailout. As Lutz writes:
"We'll examine bosses who were profane, insensitive, totally politically incorrect, and who "appropriated" insignificant items from hotels or the company. We'll visit the mind of a leader who did little but sit in his office. We'll look at another boss who could analyze a highly complex profit-and-loss statement or a balance sheet at a glance, yet who, at times, failed to grasp the simplest financial mechanisms--how things actually worked in practice to "create" the numbers in the real world."
The result is a powerful and entertaining guide for any aspiring leader.

Mari Hvattum; Brita Brenna, Janike Kampevold Larsen
R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Routes and roads make their way into and across the landscape, defining it as landscape and making it accessible for many kinds of uses and perceptions. Bringing together outstanding scholars from cultural history, geography, philosophy, and a host of other disciplines, this collection examines the complex entanglement between routes and landscapes. It traces the changing conceptions of the landscape from the Enlightenment to the present day, looking at how movement has been facilitated, imagined and represented and how such movement, in turn, has conditioned understandings of the landscape. A particular focus is on the modern transportation landscape as it came into being with the canal, the railway, and the automobile. These modes of transport have had a profound impact on the perception and conceptualization of the modern landscape, a relationship investigated in detail by authors such as Gernot BAhme, Sarah Bonnemaison, Tim Cresswell, Finola O'Kane, Charlotte Klonk, Peter Merriman, Christine Macy, David Nye, Vittoria Di Palma, Charles Withers, and Thomas Zeller.

Transport - An Australian History (Hardcover, New): Robert Lee Transport - An Australian History (Hardcover, New)
Robert Lee
R941 Discovery Miles 9 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Trains, planes, boats and cars. What did Australians do before the invention of modern transport? Aborigines travelled by foot and used canoes made from large sheets of bark stripped from eucalyptus trees, but with European settlement new ideas and technologies emerged for crossing our vast and challenging country. Transport brings together the stories of heroic, groundbreaking and everyday enterprises in transport - in shipping, roads, rail and aviation - across Australia. This is the fascinating story of how transport in Australia has developed, and how it has impacted our lives.

Analytical Studies in Transport Economics (Paperback): Andrew F. Daughety Analytical Studies in Transport Economics (Paperback)
Andrew F. Daughety
R1,345 Discovery Miles 13 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1985 and strongly quantitative in flavour, Analytical Studies in Transport Economics presents work that was at the frontier of research in the field of transport economics. Written by some of the leading scholars in this field, it covers intercity freight and air passenger transport. The eight papers included cover a range of modelling approaches and address a variety of transport issues. They are all, however, concerned with the analysis of current issues - questions of industry productivity, optimal pricing and regulation, prediction of equilibrium, and the problems of competition. The collection is preceded by an invaluable 'Introduction and overview' by the editor. Provided to place the volume in context, this overview gives a brief review of the relevant literature and then endeavours to present the common results and findings which cut across the individual papers or approaches.

Private and Public Enterprise in Europe - Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, 1830-1990 (Hardcover): Robert Millward Private and Public Enterprise in Europe - Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, 1830-1990 (Hardcover)
Robert Millward
R3,724 Discovery Miles 37 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This 2005 book is a comparative history of the economic organisation of energy, telecommunications and transport in Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It examines the role that private and public enterprise have played in the construction and operation of the railways, electricity, gas and water supply, tramways, coal, oil and natural gas industries, telegraph, telephone, computer networks and other modern telecommunications. The book begins with the arrival of the railways in the 1830s, charts the development of arms' length regulation, municipalisation and nationalisation, and ends on the eve of privatisation in the 1980s. Robert Millward argues that the role of ideology, especially in the form of debates about socialism and capitalism, has been exaggerated. Instead the driving forces in changes in economic organisation were economic and technological factors and the book traces their influence in shaping the pattern of regulation and ownership of these key sectors of modern economies.

Unfare Solutions - Local Earmarked Charges to Fund Public Transport (Hardcover): Marcus Enoch, Peter Nijkamp, Stephen Potter,... Unfare Solutions - Local Earmarked Charges to Fund Public Transport (Hardcover)
Marcus Enoch, Peter Nijkamp, Stephen Potter, Barry Ubbels
R4,130 Discovery Miles 41 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Transport policy is an increasingly difficult area for all national governments and regional/local authorities. Tackling car use and realizing a sustainable transport system appears to be very difficult. Developing public transport is seen as an increasingly important element in improving the transport system, especially in densely populated areas. At the same time however, governments are under increasing pressure to cut taxation. As a result there is a growing gap between increasing policy need for public transport and government resources to fund that need. This timely book explores one solution to this dilemma, which is the use of local charges and taxes dedicated to support public transport. Unfare Solutions examines how and why such charges have evolved and how they do (or do not) relate to modern transport policy developments and theory. It shows innovative funding techniques developed by both public transport providers and federal and local authorities. The authors are very experienced in the field of mobility and public transport. They have conducted many researches in this field (including a major CEC research project towards the use of charges and taxes for public transport) and written several books and publications about the economics of transport in a sustainable context.

Ohio on the Move - Transportation in the Buckeye State (Hardcover): H. Roger Grant Ohio on the Move - Transportation in the Buckeye State (Hardcover)
H. Roger Grant
R1,015 Discovery Miles 10 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Few American states can match the rich and diverse transportation heritage of Ohio. Every major form of public conveyance eventually served the Buckeye state. From the “Canal Age” to the “Interurban Era,” Ohio emerged as a national leader. The state's central location, abundant natural resources, impressive wealth, shrewd business leadership, and episodes of good fortune explain the dynamic nature of its transport past. Ohio on the Move is the first systematic scholarly account of the transportation history of Ohio. To date, little has appeared on several subjects discussed here, including intercity bus and truck operations and commercial aviation. The more familiar topics of river and lake transport, canals, steam railroads, electric interurbans, and mass transit are extensively explored in the Ohio context. In this inaugural volume of Ohio University Press's Ohio Bicentennial Series, Professor Grant demonstrates the truth of the slogan that Ohio is “the heart of it all” - not solely by location but also in the impressive network of transportation arteries that have linked the state, whether natural waterways and air space or various artificial land-travel routes.

The Rise and Rise of Road Transport, 1700-1990 (Paperback, New ed): Theo Barker, Dorian Gerhold The Rise and Rise of Road Transport, 1700-1990 (Paperback, New ed)
Theo Barker, Dorian Gerhold
R835 Discovery Miles 8 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most books about Britain's transport history have concentrated upon canals and railways. It is now clear that a great deal of traffic went by road even before turnpikes, and that goods as well as passenger services were much more highly developed than used to be supposed. This book is an important survey of road transport over the past three centuries. The authors summarise the new evidence and arguments and explain why we need to take a longer view of the subject. They shed new light on the importance of horse-drawn freight in the eighteenth century before the introduction of turnpikes, offset the undue attention paid to the railways in the nineteenth century, and stress that motor transport's present great importance only dates from the 1950s. A full bibliography is provided for more extended study.

Die Energiewende ALS Exportschlager? - Eine Rechtsvergleichende Untersuchung Der Deutsch-Polnischen Vorschriften Zum Uebertragungsnetzausbau Im Lichte Einer Sicheren Elektrizitaetsversorgung Und Unter Beruecksichtigung Des Europaeischen Rechtsrahmens (German, Paperback)
Witold Kabacinski
R2,456 Discovery Miles 24 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An agency originally created to get the farmer out of the mud, it has gone on to build the vast network of roads that now connects every corner of the state. When the Texas Highway Department (now called the Texas Department of Transportation or TxDOT) was created in 1917, there were only about 200,000 cars in Texas traveling on fewer than a thousand miles of paved roads. Today, after 100 years of the Texas Highway Department, the state boasts over 80,000 miles of paved, state-maintained roads that accommodate more than 25 million vehicles. Sure to interest history enthusiasts and casual readers alike, decades of progress and turmoil, development and disaster, and politics and corruption come together once more in these pages, which tell the remarkable story of an infrastructure 100 years in the making.

Planning for Public Transport Accessibility - An International Sourcebook (Hardcover, New Ed): Carey Curtis, Jan Scheurer Planning for Public Transport Accessibility - An International Sourcebook (Hardcover, New Ed)
Carey Curtis, Jan Scheurer
R4,494 Discovery Miles 44 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bringing together a comparative analysis of the accessibility by public transport of 23 cities spanning four continents, this book provides a "hands-on" introduction to the evolution, rationale and effectiveness of a new generation of accessibility planning tools that have emerged since the mid-2000s. The Spatial Network Analysis for Multimodal Urban Transport Systems (SNAMUTS) tool is used as a practical example to demonstrate how city planners can find answers as they seek to improve public transport accessibility. Uniquely among the new generation of accessibility tools, SNAMUTS has been designed for multi-city comparisons. A range of indicators are employed in each city including: the effectiveness of the public transport network; the relationship between the transport network and land use activity; who gets access within the city; and how resilient the city will be. The cities selected enable a comparison between cities by old world-new world; public transport modes; governance approach; urban development constraints. The book is arranged along six themes that address the different planning challenges cities confront. Richly illustrated with maps and diagrams, this volume acts as a comprehensive sourcebook of accessibility indicators and a snapshot of current policy making around the world in the realm of strategic planning for land use transport integration and the growth of public transport. It provides a deeper understanding of the complexity, opportunities and challenges of twenty-first-century accessibility planning.

Historic Canals and Waterways of South Carolina (Hardcover): Historic Canals and Waterways of South Carolina (Hardcover)
R1,495 R1,229 Discovery Miles 12 290 Save R266 (18%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first history of the canal boom that revolutionized transportation in the Palmetto State. South Carolina's first transportation revolution was the development of a network of canals and waterways. From the 1790s to the 1830s, the Palmetto State was a preeminent leader in infrastructure improvements and developed an extensive system of more than two thousand miles of canals and waterways connecting virtually every part of the state with the coast and the port of Charleston. Robert J. Kapsch expertly recounts the complex history of innovation, determination, and improvement that fueled the canal boom in early-nineteenth-century South Carolina. At the center of the state's waterway system was the Santee Canal, constructed between 1793 and 1800 to tie the Santee River and its upcountry watershed with the Cooper River and Charleston Harbor in the south. The Santee Canal was America's first summit-level canal - the most complex type of canal to plan, design, and build. Following the War of 1812, South Carolina set about building additional canals and improving navigation on the state's rivers to enable downstream commerce with Charleston via the Santee Canal. During this era South Carolina spent more money per citizen on internal improvements than did any other state. Kapsch chronicles the development and execution of these projects as well as the involvement of major figures in this effort, including John Christian Senf, Robert Mills, Abram Blanding, and Joel R. Poinsett. As Kapsch notes, the geography of South Carolina dictated the development of its canals and river navigation schemes, but it was cotton, the state's all-important cash crop, that necessitated this mode of transportation. The goal was to transport cotton from plantations across the state to the port of Charleston for shipment. From the first settlement in South Carolina, economic success was in fact dependent on waterways. But in the 1830s the canal boom ended when another transportation innovation, the railroad, superseded waterway travel as primary link to the ports. In this first comprehensive account of South Carolina's canal history, Kapsch relies on his experience as an engineer and historical researcher, as well as on numerous maps and illustrations, to tell a fascinating and forgotten tale from South Carolina's past.
