This 2005 book is a comparative history of the economic organisation of energy, telecommunications and transport in Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It examines the role that private and public enterprise have played in the construction and operation of the railways, electricity, gas and water supply, tramways, coal, oil and natural gas industries, telegraph, telephone, computer networks and other modern telecommunications. The book begins with the arrival of the railways in the 1830s, charts the development of arms' length regulation, municipalisation and nationalisation, and ends on the eve of privatisation in the 1980s. Robert Millward argues that the role of ideology, especially in the form of debates about socialism and capitalism, has been exaggerated. Instead the driving forces in changes in economic organisation were economic and technological factors and the book traces their influence in shaping the pattern of regulation and ownership of these key sectors of modern economies.
Transport policy is an increasingly difficult area for all national governments and regional/local authorities. Tackling car use and realizing a sustainable transport system appears to be very difficult. Developing public transport is seen as an increasingly important element in improving the transport system, especially in densely populated areas. At the same time however, governments are under increasing pressure to cut taxation. As a result there is a growing gap between increasing policy need for public transport and government resources to fund that need. Most books about Britain's transport history have concentrated upon canals and railways. It is now clear that a great deal of traffic went by road even before turnpikes, and that goods as well as passenger services were much more highly developed than used to be supposed. This book is an important survey of road transport over the past three centuries. The authors summarise the new evidence and arguments and explain why we need to take a longer view of the subject. They shed new light on the importance of horse-drawn freight in the eighteenth century before the introduction of turnpikes, offset the undue attention paid to the railways in the nineteenth century, and stress that motor transport's present great importance only dates from the 1950s. A full bibliography is provided for more extended study.

Die Nuklearkatastrophe in Fukushima fuhrte zu einem Wendepunkt in der deutschen Energiepolitik. Mit einem parteiubergreifenden politischen Konsens und mit breiter Zustimmung in der deutschen Bevoelkerung beschloss die Bundesregierung kurze Zeit danach die Beschleunigung des Atomausstiegs und damit die Umgestaltung der deutschen Energieversorgung gestutzt auf Erneuerbare Energien. Dieser Umbau wird seither mit dem Begriff der "Energiewende" assoziiert. Doch der Zubau von Erneuerbaren Energien fuhrt auch zu einem wachsenden Ausbaubedarf im UEbertragungsnetz, da der in den Norddeutschen Windparks produzierte Strom durch das UEbertragungsnetz in die sudlichen Lastzentren abtransportiert werden muss. Auch Polen steht gegenwartig vor einem grundlegenden Strukturumbruch in der Elektrizitatsversorgung. Denn Polen setzt kunftig auf eine Energieversorgung aus Kernenergie. Dazu plant Polen den Bau von zwei Kernkraftwerken, deren Errichtung bis 2035 abgeschlossen sein soll. Obwohl Polen damit einen anderen Weg als Deutschland eingeschlagen hat, ist die polnische Ausgangslage im Bereich des UEbertragungsnetzes auch ohne die beiden Kernkraftwerke bereits heute mit der deutschen vergleichbar. This is the first history of the canal boom that revolutionized transportation in the Palmetto State. South Carolina's first transportation revolution was the development of a network of canals and waterways. From the 1790s to the 1830s, the Palmetto State was a preeminent leader in infrastructure improvements and developed an extensive system of more than two thousand miles of canals and waterways connecting virtually every part of the state with the coast and the port of Charleston. Robert J. Kapsch expertly recounts the complex history of innovation, determination, and improvement that fueled the canal boom in early-nineteenth-century South Carolina. At the center of the state's waterway system was the Santee Canal, constructed between 1793 and 1800 to tie the Santee River and its upcountry watershed with the Cooper River and Charleston Harbor in the south. The Santee Canal was America's first summit-level canal - the most complex type of canal to plan, design, and build. Following the War of 1812, South Carolina set about building additional canals and improving navigation on the state's rivers to enable downstream commerce with Charleston via the Santee Canal. During this era South Carolina spent more money per citizen on internal improvements than did any other state. Kapsch chronicles the development and execution of these projects as well as the involvement of major figures in this effort, including John Christian Senf, Robert Mills, Abram Blanding, and Joel R. Poinsett. As Kapsch notes, the geography of South Carolina dictated the development of its canals and river navigation schemes, but it was cotton, the state's all-important cash crop, that necessitated this mode of transportation. The goal was to transport cotton from plantations across the state to the port of Charleston for shipment. From the first settlement in South Carolina, economic success was in fact dependent on waterways. But in the 1830s the canal boom ended when another transportation innovation, the railroad, superseded waterway travel as primary link to the ports. In this first comprehensive account of South Carolina's canal history, Kapsch relies on his experience as an engineer and historical researcher, as well as on numerous maps and illustrations, to tell a fascinating and forgotten tale from South Carolina's past.
