Global value chains (GVCs) are fraught with the phenomenon of fragmentation and dispersion of production across the world. India presents a unique example with its high potential in manufacturing capability but low integration in GVCs. This book examines the reasons why India has failed to integrate within GVCs so far and looks at key examples to understand the impediments in this process. The chapters bring together case studies from across the manufacturing industry - labour-intensive (garment, paper and diamond), capital-intensive (automobile and petrochemical), and knowledge-intensive (semi-conductor microchip, chemical and pharmaceutical) sectors. Landslides and slope failure are common in the US and rest of the world. The landslides cause significant damage to infrastructure and millions of dollars are required each year to fix the slope. A sustainable and costeffective option to stabilise the slope can have significant benefits, as it will reduce the cost of maintenance and when using recycled pins, it may help the environment at the same time. The recycled plastic pin is made from recycled plastic bottles and other plastic waste. Several demonstration projects already proved the effectiveness of RPP as an alternative option to fix slope failure, with a maximum failure depth of 7-8 ft. In this book, every detail of the slope stabilisation technique using recycled plastic pins, including the design techniques and several case studies, are included. Since it came into force on 31 January 1997 the Arbitration Act
1996 has generally been welcomed by users and practitioners in the
construction industry. It has fulfilled expectations that it would
provide a user-friendly and practical basis of resolving disputes
arising from construction contracts in a fair, expeditious and
economical way. In doing so it has generated a modest volume of
case law that has demonstrated the excellence of the Act's
provisions and its drafting. Since the Fourth Edition of this book appeared in 1997 the
Housing Grants, Construction and regeneration Act 1996 with its
Scheme for Construction Contracts Regulations 1998 have come into
force, as have the Civil Procedure Rules 1998, both of which affect
the resolution of disputes arising from construction contracts.
Case law has arisen from the Construction Act, and from the House
of Lords judgment in the Beaufort Developments case, overturning
the much-criticised judgment of the Court of Appeal in
Crouch. In this Fifth Edition of an established text the author deals with each stage of an arbitration, explaining in practical terms the procedures to be adopted in avoiding disputes and in dealing with them efficiently when they do arise. It features over 20 specimen arbitration documents and includes the full text of the Act. It also covers several important developments in case law affecting construction arbitrations, and refers to the introduction and case law arising from adjudication under the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996.
The chance of being claimed against is now a major risk factor for every building designer, engineer, quantity surveyor and project manager. Apart from the cases that go to court, many other claims are settled before they reach that stage. The cost of insurance to meet claims is now a substantial component of every practice's overheads.
