Umweltorientiertes Krankenhausmanagement - Strategien und Massnahmen fur eine groessere Umweltvertraglichkeit (German,... Umweltorientiertes Krankenhausmanagement - Strategien und Massnahmen fur eine groessere Umweltvertraglichkeit (German, Paperback)
Lutz Wicke; Ernst Wilhelm, Axel J F Janischowski
R1,726 Discovery Miles 17 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Petra Kunkel, Kristin Vala Ragnarsdottir
R1,002 Discovery Miles 10 020 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This open access book brings science and practice together and inspires a global movement towards co-creating regenerative civilizations that work for 100% of humanity and the Earth as a whole. With its conceptual foundation of the concept of transformation literacy it enhances the knowledge and capacity of decision-makers, change agents and institutional actors to steward transformations effectively across institutions, societal sectors and nations. Humanity is at crossroads. Resource depletion and exponential emissions that not only cause climate change, but endanger the health of people and planet, call for a decisive turnaround of human civilization. A new and transformative paradigm is emerging that advocates for regenerative civilizations, in which a narrative of systemic health as much as individual and collective vitality guide the interaction of socio-economic-ecological systems. Truly transformative change must go far beyond technical solutions, and instead envision what can be termed 'a new operating system' that helps humankind to live well within the planetary boundaries and partner with life's evolutionary processes. This requires transformations at three different levels: * Mindsets that reconnect with a worldview in which human agency acknowledges its co-evolutionary pathways with each other and the Earth. * Political, social and economic systems that are regenerative and foster the care-taking for Earth life support systems. * Competencies to design and implement effective large-scale transformative change processes at multiple levels with multiple stakeholders. This book provides key ingredients for enhancing transformation literacy from various perspectives around the globe. It connects the emerging practice of stewarding transformative change across business, government institutions and civil society actors with the most promising scientific models and concepts that underpin human action to shape the future collectively in accordance with planetary needs.

Andrea Rinaldo, Marino Gatto, Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe
R1,608 Discovery Miles 16 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

River networks are critically important ecosystems. This interdisciplinary book provides an integrated ecohydrological framework blending laboratory, field, and theoretical evidence that changes our understanding of river networks as ecological corridors. It describes how the physical structure of the river environment impacts biodiversity, species invasions, population dynamics, and the spread of waterborne disease. State-of-the-art research on the ecological roles of the structure of river networks is summarized, including important studies on the spread and control of waterborne diseases, biodiversity loss due to water resource management, and invasions by non-native species. Practical implications of this research are illustrated with numerous examples throughout. This is an invaluable go-to reference for graduate students and researchers interested in river ecology and hydrology, and the links between the two. Describing new related research on spatially-explicit modeling of the spread of waterborne disease, this book will also be of great interest to epidemiologists and public health managers.

Minerals and Human Health (Paperback): Larissa Dobrzhinetskaya Minerals and Human Health (Paperback)
Larissa Dobrzhinetskaya
R1,991 Discovery Miles 19 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Minerals and Human Health is written in response to the demand for additional knowledge about global climate change, the industrial contamination of water reservoirs, and epidemiological intoxication from industrial hazards related to the use of mineral resources. The book addresses issues associated with the physical and geological processes of the Earth, the sustainability and fragility of the Earth's resources, and the interplay between health, industrial activities, and environments. It combines mineralogy, medicine, and the environmental, life, and political sciences to develop solutions to ease human suffering from geological toxicity. Minerals and Human Health helps students to understand the Earth's activities and the unique resources that sustain life and facilitate industrial progress. The text teaches readers how the dispersal of geological materials effects the human population. In-book quizzes allow students to assess their own progress. Questions for discussion and review encourage critical thinking and debate and support retention. Minerals and Human Health can be used in courses on earth and environmental sciences, geopollution, and geochemistry.

The impetus for this book came from numerous requests by public and private agencies and citizens for information regarding the human health effects of pes ticide exposures. We have tried to compile a relatively complete, concise sum mary of the acute and chronic health effects and the toxicology of pesticides in a format that provides quick and easy access. This book was written to address the needs of the following groups: medical and public health professionals, tox icologists, environmentalists, industrial hygienists, regulators, producers and users of pesticides, public interest advocates, and the legal profession. Acknowledgments We are indebted to Mr. Christopher J. Wiant, Chief of the Environmental Chemistry Section of the Illinois Department of Public Health. The financial support provided by his office was essential in producing this book. We are also indebted to Dr. Charles Benbrook, former staff member, and Representative George E. Brown, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Depart ment Operations, Research and Foreign Agriculture of the Committee on Agri culture, United States House of Representatives, for their guidance in obtain ing pesticide toxicity data. In the Freedom of Information Office, Office of Pesticide Programs of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the patience and assistance of Therese Murtagh and Virginia Salzman in obtaining documents are appreciated. Of the numerous individuals who participated in the production of this book, the following merit special recognition for the quality of their research, editing, and critical skills: Mark Loafman, Sue Ramirez, Steve Smith, Sally Burns, and Denise Steurer."

R693 Discovery Miles 6 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Superbly written and researched." —Booklist "Builds a strong case." —Kirkus Lyme disease is spreading rapidly around the globe as ticks move into places they could not survive before. The first epidemic to emerge in the era of climate change, the disease infects half a million people in the US and Europe each year, and untold multitudes in Canada, China, Russia, and Australia. Mary Beth Pfeiffer shows how we have contributed to this growing menace, and how modern medicine has underestimated its danger. She tells the heart-rending stories of families destroyed by a single tick bite, of children disabled, and of one woman’s tragic choice after an exhaustive search for a cure. Pfeiffer also warns of the emergence of other tick-borne illnesses that make Lyme more difficult to treat and pose their own grave risks. Lyme is an impeccably researched account of an enigmatic disease, making a powerful case for action to fight ticks, heal patients, and recognize humanity’s role in a modern scourge.

Principles for the Assessment of Risks to Human Health from Exposure to Chemicals (Paperback): World Health Organization (Who) Principles for the Assessment of Risks to Human Health from Exposure to Chemicals (Paperback)
World Health Organization (Who)
R693 Discovery Miles 6 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A state-of-the-art review of methods and procedures for assessing the risks to human health posed by environmental chemicals. Addressed to regulatory authorities, risk managers and other decision-makers, the book aims to demystify the principles of risk assessment and thus encourage wider use of this powerful tool for protecting populations. Since the detection of chemical hazards may have socioeconomic and political consequences, the book gives particular attention to methods for the accurate identification of risks and determination of their severity. The book has four chapters covering each logical step in the process of risk assessment. The first, on hazard identification, explains how data on a chemical's toxicity and mode of action can be used to determine whether the chemical will cause adverse effects on health. The strengths and limitations of different types of data are discussed together with criteria commonly used to establish causality. Methods for assessing dose-response relationships are reviewed in chapter two, which explains how to characterize the relationship between the dose administered or received and the incidence of an adverse effect. Exposure assessment is covered in the next chapter, which describes methods for determining the nature and extent of contact with chemical substances and discusses the characteristics of exposure in the general environment, in the workplace, and from consumer products. The final chapter explains the procedure of risk characterization as a decision-making tool that brings together estimates of exposure levels and risks and summarizes sources of uncertainty in the scientific data. Practical options for risk management are presented asa range of regulatory, non-regulatory, economic, and technological measures.

The lifestyles and socio-economic status that are prevalent in regions of the world with limited resources form the background for the unique features of neoplastic diseases in these areas, where the majority of the world population lives. The predominance of the world's retroviral burden of in these areas further compounds the nature and challenges of the cancer there. Much of the international cancer literature covers the nature and challenges of the disease as seen in high-income regions of the world, thereby giving a skewed view of the global cancer challenges. As the low- and middle-income regions of the world transition from communicable to non communicable disease patterns, there is a need for a corresponding paradigm shift, with increased emphasis on what the world needs to know about non communicable diseases, including cancer, where the disease is hitherto poorly documented.
