Developing the Competitive Advantage of Indigenous Construction Firms (Hardcover): Matthew Kwaw Somiah, Clinton Ohis Aigbavboa,... Developing the Competitive Advantage of Indigenous Construction Firms (Hardcover)
Matthew Kwaw Somiah, Clinton Ohis Aigbavboa, Wellington Thwala
R4,920 Discovery Miles 49 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book takes a pragmatic approach to develop the competitive advantage of indigenous construction firms in the Global South, using Ghana as a case study. It provides readers with two major practical insights. The first focuses on the theoretical underpinning of firms' competitive advantage and develops a competitive advantage model for indigenous construction firms. This competitive advantage conceptual framework aids in explaining the main and sub-attributes underpinning the competitive advantage of indigenous construction firms as well as providing the basis for assessing a firm's competitiveness. Secondly, it highlights and addresses theoretical gaps in existing competitive advantage studies deemed essential for indigenous construction firms. Finally, a detailed two-stage Delphi study in the Ghanaian construction industry is presented as a case study. The book is therefore of interest to researchers in construction management, strategic management, civil engineering, business administration, marketing, entrepreneurial and economic studies. It is an essential manual for owners and managers of construction businesses. It is also useful for government departments and non-governmental agencies seeking innovative ways to develop the capacity of indigenous firms and/or contractors to make them more responsive to competitive bidding scenarios, delivery of projects, and satisfying the needs of the industry's stakeholders.

Geometry of Construction: For Builders, Architects, Engineers (Hardcover, Facsimile Of 1954 2e.): T.B. Nichols, Norman Keep Geometry of Construction: For Builders, Architects, Engineers (Hardcover, Facsimile Of 1954 2e.)
T.B. Nichols, Norman Keep
R4,487 Discovery Miles 44 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Geometry of Construction has long been acknowledged as the most concise and instructive guide to the technical geometry of the construction industry, and a vital resource for students in architecture, carpentry, stonemasonry and engineering. Beginning with the very basics of technical drawing, it provides a series of increasingly complex exercises to clearly explain all that the reader needs to know about geometry. Each topic is covered with a detailed diagram and carefully written instructions, enabling the student to progress from basics such as the circle and construction of scales, to some of the most complex challenges including the entasis of a column, an ionic volute, the hemispherical dome and the setting out of barrel vaulting. The authors, T. B. Nichols and N. P. Keep, both worked extensively in the construction industry before moving into teaching, so they were ideally suited to produce this highly practical guide. First published in 1947, a revised edition, incorporating numerous suggestions from students and lecturers on Raking Sections, the Projection of Points, of Lines, and of Planes, the True Lengths of Lines, the Oblique Plane and on Roof Surfaces, was produced in 1954. Last published in 1966, it has been unobtainable since then. It remains one of the most useful books for any student in the construction industry.

People and Buildings (Paperback, annotated edition): Robert Gutman People and Buildings (Paperback, annotated edition)
Robert Gutman
R1,699 Discovery Miles 16 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is at the present time a continuing interest in relating the behavioral sciences to design disciplines. Sociologists and social psychologists have been added to faculties of architecture schools, where they off er seminars and participate as programming specialists and design critics in studio courses. Behavioral scientists in many European countries have collaborated with architects and planners in design work undertaken by governmental ministries, and more recently have been participating in the work of private design fi rms. Similar developments are now common in the United States.

In this fascinating study of the "ecology of buildings," biologists, anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, and architects analyze the effect of working and living spaces on human behavior. Focusing on such contemporary social problems as the influence of the physical environment on psychological stress, mental illness, family disorganization, urban violence, and delinquency, the contributors show that we must respect the constraints that the environment and the nature of man impose on human adaptability.

The selections in "People and Buildings" have been written primarily by scientists and designers working in the behavioral mode. The selections within each part have been arranged to provide an ordered argument or exploration of the general topic with which the part as a whole deals. To facilitate the reader's appreciation of the argument, each selection is preceded by a short prefatory statement. In view of the fact that a single article or preface can hardly be representative of the depth of the literature that has developed around an argument, Gutman has included an annotated bibliography, which is keyed to the selections through the use of subheadings. A new introduction by Nathan Glazer has been prepared for this edition.

"Robert Gutman," until his death in 2007, was a lecturer in social and environmental studies at Princeton University's School of Architecture. He is the author of "Architectural Practice: A Critical View," and "The Design of American Housing: A Reappraisal of the Architect's Role" among numerous scholarly articles.

"Nathan Glazer" is professor of education, emeritus, at Harvard University. He is known for his writings on ethnicity and race, immigration, urban development, and social policy in the United States. His books include "We Are All Multiculturalists Now, Beyond the Melting Pot" and "The Lonely Crowd."

Gabriela Garcia, Aziliz Vandesande, Fausto Cardoso, Koen Van Balen
R7,307 Discovery Miles 73 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Future of the Past is a biennial conference generally carried out during the commemoration date of the incorporation of Santa Ana de Los Rios de Cuenca Ecuador as a World Heritage Site (WHS). It initiated in 2014, organized by the City Preservation Management research project (CPM) of the University of Cuenca, to create a space for dialoguing among interested actors in the cultural heritage field. Since then, this space has served to exchange initiatives and to promote coordinated actions based on shared responsibility, in the local context. The third edition of this conference took place in the context of the 20th anniversary of being listed as WHS and a decade of CPM as the Southern host of the PRECOM(3)OS UNESCO Chair (Preventive Conservation, Maintenance and Monitoring of Monuments and Sites). For the very first time, and thanks to the collaboration with the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation of the University of Leuven (Belgium), the conference expanded its local scope. On this occasion, contributions reflected round a worldwide challenge in the cultural field: revealing the paths towards participatory governance of cultural heritage. Participatory governance is understood as institutional decision-making structures supported by shared responsibilities and rights among diverse actors.

A 21st Century Employability Skills Improvement Framework for the Construction Industry (Hardcover): John Aliu, Clinton... A 21st Century Employability Skills Improvement Framework for the Construction Industry (Hardcover)
John Aliu, Clinton Aigbavboa, Wellington Thwala
R4,927 Discovery Miles 49 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book will provide readers with an understanding of the employability concept and develop an employability skills improvement model to enhance the employability of built environment graduates to foster economic development. The developed model determines the influence of generic skills, discipline specific skills, work-integrated learning, emotional intelligence, university-industry collaboration outcomes and 4IR knowledge in predicting the outcomes of improved graduate employability. The model is developed with a theoretical lens on existing frameworks of employability and skills development. Whilst drawing comparisons with countries such as the UK, USA, Australia and Canada, the authors present the results of a two-stage Delphi survey in South Africa as a case study on the current state of skills development and on the skills of the future. The case study is presented in line with the South Africa's long-term National Development Plan (NDP) aimed at developing the key capabilities and skills of its citizens by ensuring quality education on a broader scale by 2030. As automation continues to rapidly advance, the pressures on universities to revamp and restructure their curricula have become increasingly necessary. This book recommends that higher education institutions urgently need to intensify their efforts by introducing significant modifications to the science and technology curriculum to enable students to develop and acquire competencies in the rapidly emerging areas of artificial intelligence, data science, robotics, advanced simulation, data communication, system automation, real-time inventory operations, cloud computing, and information technologies. This implies that universities' curriculum should be infused with 4IR thinking within the conventional primary sciences of biology, chemistry, and physics, with greater emphasis on digital literacy to boost 4IR understanding amongst the graduates. The book is therefore of interest to researchers and policy makers in the built environment that are placed in academia, the construction industry or at consultancy levels, it provides significant recommendations for universities as they intensify their efforts to develop graduates for the future.

Modern Protective Structures (Hardcover): Theodor Krauthammer Modern Protective Structures (Hardcover)
Theodor Krauthammer
R5,667 Discovery Miles 56 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In today's world, reasonably predictable military operations have been replaced by low intensity conflicts-less predictable terrorist activities carried out by determined individuals or small groups that possess a wide range of backgrounds and capabilities. Because of the threats posed by this evolving type of warfare, civil engineers and emergency personnel face new challenges in designing facilities to protect lives and property and in conducting effective rescue operations and forensic investigations. Addressing these needs, Modern Protective Structures develops realistic guidelines for the analysis, design, assessment, retrofit, and research of protected facilities. After introducing a comprehensive risk management approach, the author provides a general background on explosive devices and their capabilities as well as explosive effects and the processes that generate them. He then discusses the effects of conventional and nuclear explosions. The book subsequently considers the significant design differences between conventional and nuclear loads and between existing design procedures and state-of-the-art information from recent research. It also summarizes existing blast-resistant design approaches and describes the dynamic responses of structural systems to blasts, shocks, and impacts. Additional coverage includes the behavior of specific structural connections, the traditional concept of P-I diagrams, and progressive collapse. The book concludes with a systematic and balanced protective design approach. Tackling the analytical, design, assessment, and hazard mitigation issues associated with short-duration dynamic loads, this book examines how impulsive loads affect various typesof buildings and facilities. It provides the necessary material to help ensure the safety of persons, assets, and projects.

Biodeterioration of Concrete (Paperback): Thomas Dyer Biodeterioration of Concrete (Paperback)
Thomas Dyer
R1,560 Discovery Miles 15 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Awareness of the importance of ensuring durability of concrete has been a growing concern of engineers, and there is now considerable understanding of the mechanisms, which cause its deterioration, and means of limiting such damage through the use of appropriate materials and approaches to design. Many of the deterioration mechanisms, which affect concrete, are the result of interaction with the non-living environment - chlorides in seawater, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, cyclic freezing and thawing. However, living organisms can also cause damage - through both chemical and physical processes - which under the right conditions, can be severe. This book looks at all forms of concrete biodeterioration together for the first time. It examines, from a fundamental starting point, biodeterioration mechanisms, as well as the conditions which allow living organisms (bacteria, fungi, plants and a range of marine organisms) to colonise concrete. A detailed evaluation of chemical compounds produced by living organisms with respect to their interaction with the mineral constituents of concrete, and the implications it has for the integrity of structures, is also included. Approaches to avoiding biodeterioration of concrete are also covered, including selection of materials, mix proportioning, design, and use of protective systems.

Leadership in the Construction Industry - Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World (Hardcover): George Ofori,... Leadership in the Construction Industry - Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World (Hardcover)
George Ofori, Shamas-ur-Rehman Toor
R4,230 Discovery Miles 42 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a new framework for leadership in the construction industry which draws from the authentic leadership construct. The framework has three major themes: self-leadership, self-transcendent leadership, and sustainable leadership. Despite its significance, leadership has not been given due importance in the construction industry as focus is placed on managerial functionalism. At the project level, even with the technological advances in the industry in recent years, construction is realized in the form of people undertaking distinct interdependent activities which require effective leadership. The industry faces many challenges including: demanding client requirements and project parameters; more stringent regulations, codes and systems; intense competition in the industry; and threats from disruptive enterprise. In such a complex environment, technology-driven and tool-based project and corporate management is insufficient. It must be complemented by a strategic, genuine, stakeholder-focused and ethical leadership. Leadership in the Construction Industry is based on a study on authentic leadership and its development in Singapore. Leadership theories and concepts are reviewed; the importance of leadership in the construction industry is discussed; and the grounded theory approach which was applied in the study is explained. Many eminent construction professionals in Singapore were interviewed in the field study. Emerging from the experiences of the leaders documented in this book are three major themes: (1) self-leadership: how leaders engage in various self-related processes such as self-awareness, self-regulation, and role modeling. (2) self-transcendent leadership: how leaders go beyond leading themselves to leading others through servant leadership, shared leadership, spiritual leadership, and socially-responsible leadership; and, finally, (3) sustainable leadership or the strategies leaders employ to make the impact of their leadership lasting. A synthesis of these themes and their implications for leadership development is presented before the book concludes with some recommendations for current and aspiring leaders about how they can engage with them. This book is essential reading for all construction practitioners from all backgrounds; and researchers on leadership and management in construction.
