Covid-19 appeared in 2019 and illustrated that the errors were embedded in the human race. Homo stupidus contains an update of the book, and much more. Human stupidity has and continues to hamper control and eradication of disease. For example, bTB is spread by movement of infected cattle and badgers. Incest is very rare in mammals. Male badgers move outside their social group to breed, and inadvertently spread disease.This long-established fact was ignored by planners. Badger bTB was localised to the West Country for at least 20 years, but is now widespread nationally. Badger to cattle and cattle to badger transmission occurs: once introduced, the major spread is within species. The disease was eradicated years ago from countries where it had not established in wild life.Aspects of the disease have changed during the past 50 years, but a possible solution is suggested. Simple fatal errors made in the control/eradication of Covid-19 are specified and discussed. Human and animal disease control/eradication is confounded by ignorance, misunderstanding, polarised viewpoints, fragments of information, conflicting ethics, political expediency and complex mathematics.

"Healing the Herds: Disease, Livestock Economies, and the Globalization of Veterinary Medicine" offers a new and exciting
comparative approach to the complex interrelationships of microbes, markets, and medicine in the global economy. It draws upon fourteen case studies from the Americas, western Europe, and the European and Japanese colonies to illustrate how the rapid growth of the international trade in animals through the nineteenth century engendered the spread of infectious diseases, sometimes with devastating consequences for indigenous pastoral societies.
At different times and across much of the globe, livestock epidemics have challenged social order and provoked state interventions, which were sometimes opposed by pastoralists. The intensification of agriculture has transformed environments, with consequences for animal and human health. But the last two centuries have also witnessed major changes in the way societies have conceptualized diseases and sought to control them. The rise of germ theories and the discovery of vaccines against some infections made it possible to move beyond the blunt tools of animal culls and restrictive quarantines of the past. Nevertheless, these older methods have remained important to strategies of control and prevention, as demonstrated during the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Britain in 2001.
From the late nineteenth century, advances in veterinary technologies afforded veterinary scientists a new professional status and allowed them to wield greater political influence. In the European and Japanese colonies, state support for biomedical veterinary science often led to coercive policies for managing the livestock economies of the colonized peoples. In western Europe and North America, public responses to veterinary interventions were often unenthusiastic and reflected a latent distrust of outside interference and state regulation. Politics, economics, and science inform these essays on the history of animal diseases and the expansion in veterinary medicine.

This book presents a modelling framework in which epidemiological model results are integrated with an economic model of the U.S. agricultural sector to enable estimation of the economic impacts of outbreaks of foreign-source livestock diseases. To demonstrate the model, the study assessed results of a hypothetical outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The modelling framework includes effects of the FMD episode on all major agricultural products and assesses these effects on aggregate supply, demand, and trade over 16 quarters. Model results show a potential for large trade-related losses for beef, beef cattle, hogs, and pork, though relatively few animals are destroyed. This model is more comprehensive than previous work because it has components for modelling both economic effects and disease-spread effects from an outbreak, for which the results can be integrated. It also assesses the effects of a disease outbreak on major agricultural sectors- livestock and crops- along vertical market chains, from production to consumption. Thirdly, it projects the impact of the disease outbreak over 20 calendar quarters, rather than for just one year.

Over the past decade, substantial resources have been spent on tackling avian influenza and building a global capacity for a pandemic response. The catastrophic costs of the 1918 influenza pandemic are well documented, and the swine flu pandemic of 2009-10 has raised the alarm yet again. Across the world, surveillance systems have been upgraded, stockpiles of antiviral drugs and influenza vaccines have been created, veterinary and public health systems have been improved and poultry production and marketing has been dramatically restructured. What are the lessons from this experience? And what does this suggest for the future? This book explores how virus genetics, ecology and epidemiology intersect with economic, political and policy processes in a variety of places - from Bangkok to Washington, to Jakarta, Cairo, Rome and London. It focuses on the interaction of the international and national responses - and in particular the experiences of Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. It asks how effective is the disease surveillance and response system - can it respond to a new pandemic threat? The comparative analysis reveals the challenges and limitations of a technocratic, centralised response, and the need to take seriously local contexts. Drawing from these experiences, the book concludes with a discussion of future prospects and challenges, examining in particular what a 'One World, One Health' approach - where approaches to animal, human and ecosystem health are integrated - would look like in practice.
