Modeling Human Behavior With Integrated Cognitive Architectures - Comparison, Evaluation, and Validation (Paperback, New):... Modeling Human Behavior With Integrated Cognitive Architectures - Comparison, Evaluation, and Validation (Paperback, New)
Kevin A. Gluck, Richard W. Pew
R1,684 Discovery Miles 16 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Resulting from the need for greater realism in models of human and organizational behavior in military simulations, there has been increased interest in research on integrative models of human performance, both within the cognitive science community generally, and within the defense and aerospace industries in particular. This book documents accomplishments and lessons learned in a multi-year project to examine the ability of a range of integrated cognitive modeling architectures to explain and predict human behavior in a common task environment that requires multi-tasking and concept learning.

This unique project, called the Agent-Based Modeling and Behavior Representation (AMBR) Model Comparison, involved a series of human performance model evaluations in which the processes and performance levels of computational cognitive models were compared to each other and to human operators performing the identical tasks. In addition to quantitative data comparing the performance of the models and real human performance, the book also presents a qualitatively oriented discussion of the practical and scientific considerations that arise in the course of attempting this kind of model development and validation effort.

The primary audiences for this book are people in academia, industry, and the military who are interested in explaining and predicting complex human behavior using computational cognitive modeling approaches. The book should be of particular interest to individuals in any sector working in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Engineering, System Engineering, Human Factors, Ergonomics and Operations Research. Any technically or scientificallyoriented professional or student should find the material fully accessible without extensive mathematical background.

The Industrialization of Intelligence - Mind and Machine in the Modern Age (Hardcover): Noah Kennedy The Industrialization of Intelligence - Mind and Machine in the Modern Age (Hardcover)
Noah Kennedy
R3,209 Discovery Miles 32 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1989 The Industrialization of Intelligence is a spirited blend of the principles of social science and computer technology. Critically praised in the United States and England by leading lights both literary and technological, it develops an original and provocative model of the interplay between computer systems and social systems. Noah Kennedy has composed a compelling story from key episodes in the development of the computer, and coupled it with a probing analysis of the true role of automation in modem society. The result firmly plants computer technology in the soil of western culture and denies the shrill claims that the information age represents a sudden break with the historical past. He starts with biographical vignettes from the lives of five pivotal thinkers, weaving their crucial insights into the larger fabric of contemporary and future society. He then gives a provocative forecast of the role of artificial intelligence in future society, and examines the probable impact of new computer technologies on employment and on the relationships between nations. The result is a reasoned understanding of our imminent future through a thoughtful analysis of our historical past.

Novice Programming Environments - Explorations in Human-Computer Interaction and Artificial Intelligence (Hardcover): Marc... Novice Programming Environments - Explorations in Human-Computer Interaction and Artificial Intelligence (Hardcover)
Marc Eisenstadt, Mark Keane, Tim Rajan
R3,497 Discovery Miles 34 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book, originally published in 1992, encapsulates ten years of research at the Open University's Human Cognition Research Laboratory. The research investigates the problems of novice programmers, and is strongly oriented toward the design and implementation of "programming environments" aimed at eliminating or easing novices' problems. A range of languages is studied: Pascal, SOLO, Lisp, Prolog and "Knowledge Engineering Programming". The primary emphasis of the empirical studies is to gain some understanding of novices' "mental models" of the inner workings of computers. Such (erroneous) models are constructed by novices in their own heads to account for the idiosyncrasies of particular programming languages. The primary emphasis of the implementations described in the book is the provision of "automatic debugging aids", i.e. artificial intelligence programs which can analyse novices' buggy programs, and make sense of them, thereby providing useful advice for the novices. Another related strand taken in some of the work is the concept of "pre-emptive design", i.e. the provision of tools such as syntax-directed editors and graphical tracers which help programmers avoid many frequently-occurring errors. A common thread throughout the book is its Cognitive Science/Artificial Intelligence orientation. AI tools are used, for instance, to construct simulation models of subjects writing programs, in order to provide insights into what their deep conceptual errors are. At the other extreme, AI programs which were developed in order to help student debug their programs are observed empirically in order to ensure that they provide facilities actually needed by real programmers. This book will be of great interest to advanced undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional researchers in Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Human-Computer Interaction.

Machines That Become Us - The Social Context of Personal Communication Technology (Hardcover): James E. Katz Machines That Become Us - The Social Context of Personal Communication Technology (Hardcover)
James E. Katz
R3,044 Discovery Miles 30 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Social critics and artificial intelligence experts have long prophesized that computers and robots would soon relegate humans to the dustbin of history. Many among the general population seem to have shared this fear of a dehumanized future. But how are people in the twenty-first century actually reacting to the ever-expanding array of gadgets and networks at their disposal? Is computer anxiety a significant problem, paralyzing and terrorizing millions, or are ever-proliferating numbers of gadgets being enthusiastically embraced? "Machines That Become Us" explores the increasingly intimate relationship between people and their personal communication technologies.
In the first book of its kind, internationally recognized scholars from the United States and Europe explore this topic. Among the technologies analyzed are the Internet, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, networked homes, "smart" fabrics and wearable computers, interactive location badges, and implanted monitoring devices. The authors discuss critical policy issues, such as the problems of information resource access and equity, and the recently discovered "digital dropouts" phenomena.
The use of the word "become" in the book's title has three different meanings. The first suggests how people use these technologies to broaden their abilities to communicate and to represent themselves to others. Thus the technologies "become" extensions and representatives of the communicators. A second sense of "become" applies to analysis of the way these technologies become physically integrated with the user's clothing and even their bodies.
Contributors examine fashion aspects and uses of these technologies, that is, how they are used in ways becoming to the wearer. The conclusions of many chapters are supported by data, including ethnographic observations, attitude surveys and case studies from the United States, Britain, France, Italy, Finland, and Norway. This approach is especially valuable in a field that has been traditionally dominated by extrapolation and speculation, and that has focused on possible future states rather than analysis of current situations. Other chapters are integrative, seeking to advance emerging theoretical perspectives.
This exciting volume generates new insights concerning the burgeoning electronic confusion that increasingly penetrates and blurs the boundaries of various spheres of life in modern society. "Machines That Become Us" will be of interest to students of communications and technology, sociologists, and social psychologists.
James E. Katz is professor of communication at the School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies at Rutgers University. He is the author of "Connections: Social and Cultural Studies of the Telephone in American Life," published by Transaction.
"From cell phones to smart homes, James Katz shows how "ICTs" (information and communication technologies) not only serve as extensions of human capabilities, but are being integrated into all aspects of our lives and our "selves." This book presents timely and valuable insights into how pervasive information technologies are latering the way people live, act, relate to others and think of themselves. Bravo " --Starr Roxanne Hiltz, New Jersey Institute of Technology
"A valuable addition to our growing understanding of the wide ranging implications of new technologies. From teenagers' use of mobile phones to the aesthetics of astronauts' clothing, "Machines That Become Us" offers a rich compendium of insights into why we think new machines both "improve" and "jumble" our lives."--Steve Woolgar, University of Oxford
"A fascinating excursion into the realm of mind-body relationships in the Information Age, led by a multinational team of farsighted scholars." --Robert La Rose, Michigan State University

New Advances in Dependability of Networks and Systems - Proceedings of the Seventeenth International Conference on Dependability of Computer Systems DepCoS-RELCOMEX, June 27 - July 1, 2022, Wroclaw, Poland (Paperback, 1st ed. 2022)
Wojciech Zamojski, Jacek Mazurkiewicz, Jaroslaw Sugier, Tomasz Walkowiak, Janusz Kacprzyk
R4,193 Discovery Miles 41 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book consists of papers on selected topics of dependability analysis in computer systems and networks which were discussed during the 17th DepCoS-RELCOMEX conference held in Wroclaw, Poland, from June 27th to July 1st, 2022. Their collection will be an interesting source material for scientists, researchers, practitioners and students who are dealing with design, analysis and engineering of computer systems and networks and must ensure their dependable operation. Being probably the most complex technical systems ever engineered by man (and also, the most dynamically evolving ones), organization of contemporary computer systems and networks cannot be interpreted only as a structure built on the base of unreliable technical resources. Their evaluation must take into account a unique blend of interacting people, networks (together with mobile properties, cloud organization, Internet of Everything, etc.) and a large number of users dispersed geographically and constantly producing an unconceivable number of applications. Research methods being continuously developed for dependability analyses apply newest results of artificial and computational intelligence. Selection of papers in this book illustrates broad range of topics, often multi-disciplinary, which is considered in present-day dependability explorations; it also reveals an increasing role of the latest methods based on machine/deep learning and neural networks in these studies.

Predicting Storm Surges: Chaos, Computational Intelligence, Data Assimilation and Ensembles - UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis... Predicting Storm Surges: Chaos, Computational Intelligence, Data Assimilation and Ensembles - UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis (Hardcover)
Michael Siek
R1,485 Discovery Miles 14 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Accurate predictions of storm surge are of importance in many coastal areas in the world to avoid and mitigate its destructive impacts. For this purpose the physically-based (process) numerical models are typically utilized. However, in data-rich cases, one may use data-driven methods aiming at reconstructing the internal patterns of the modelled processes and relationships between the observed descriptive variables. This book focuses on data-driven modelling using methods of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory. First, some fundamentals of physical oceanography, nonlinear dynamics and chaos, computational intelligence and European operational storm surge models are covered. After that a number of improvements in building chaotic models are presented: nonlinear time series analysis, multi-step prediction, phase space dimensionality reduction, techniques dealing with incomplete time series, phase error correction, finding true neighbours, optimization of chaotic model, data assimilation and multi-model ensemble prediction. The major case study is surge prediction in the North Sea, with some tests on a Caribbean Sea case. The modelling results showed that the enhanced predictive chaotic models can serve as an efficient tool for accurate and reliable short and mid-term predictions of storm surges in order to support decision-makers for flood prediction and ship navigation.

The Artificial Life Route to Artificial Intelligence - Building Embodied, Situated Agents (Hardcover): Luc Steels, Rodney Brooks The Artificial Life Route to Artificial Intelligence - Building Embodied, Situated Agents (Hardcover)
Luc Steels, Rodney Brooks
R3,342 Discovery Miles 33 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1995, this volume is the direct result of a conference in which a number of leading researchers from the fields of artificial intelligence and biology gathered to examine whether there was any ground to assume that a new AI paradigm was forming itself and what the essential ingredients of this new paradigm were. A great deal of scepsis is justified when researchers, particularly in the cognitive sciences, talk about a new paradigm. Shifts in paradigm mean not only new ideas but also shifts in what constitutes good problems, what counts as a result, the experimental practice to validate results, and the technological tools needed to do research. Due to the complexity of the subject matter, paradigms abound in the cognitive sciences -- connectionism being the most prominent newcomer in the mid-1980s. This workshop group was brought together in order to clarify the common ground, see what had been achieved so far, and examine in which way the research could move further. This volume is a reflection of this important meeting. It contains contributions which were distributed before the workshop but then substantially broadened and revised to reflect the workshop discussions and more recent technical work. Written in polemic form, sometimes criticizing the work done thus far within the new paradigm, this collection includes research program descriptions, technical contributions, and position papers.

Cyborg Citizen - Politics in the Posthuman Age (Hardcover): Chris Hables Gray Cyborg Citizen - Politics in the Posthuman Age (Hardcover)
Chris Hables Gray
R4,362 Discovery Miles 43 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The growing synergy of humans and technology--from dialysis to genetically altered foods to PET scans--is transforming how we view our minds and our bodies. But how has it changed the body politic? How can we forge a society that protects the rights of human and cyborg alike? The creator of the cult classic Cyborg Handbook, Chris Hables Gray, here offers the first guide to "posthuman" politics, framing the key issues that could threaten or brighten our technological future. For good or ill, politics has already been cyborged in ways that touch us all: on-line voting promises to change who participates. Wars are won on video screens. Biotechnological advances-- cloning, sexual prostheses, gene patents--are redefining life, death, and family in ways that strain the social contract. In the face of these advances, visions of the cyborg future range from the utopian to the nightmarish, from a spiritual super-race transcending the body's confines to a soulless Borg consuming human individuality. Only with a broad, historically rich and ethically grounded understanding of these issues, Gray argues, can we combat the threats to our freedom and even our survival. A work of vision and imagination, Cyborg Citizen lays the groundwork for the participatory evolution of our society.
