Paul Levi, Serge Kernbach
R4,109 Discovery Miles 41 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It is our pleasure to contribute the forewordto this book on symbiotic mul- robot organisms, which is largely based on the scienti?c ?ndings and exp- rations of two major EU research projects, Symbrion and Replicator, funded under the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological 1 development (FP7) . FP7 emphasises consortia of European partners, tra- national collaboration, open coordination, ?exibility and excellence of - search and plays a leading role in multidisciplinary research and cooperative activities in Europe and beyond. Its impact is major in terms of integrating and structuring research communities across national borders to achieve a critical mass, providing the leverage for high-potential ?elds to take o?, and encouraging healthy competition at European level while avoiding unn- essary duplication of research capacities. Research proposals are evaluated through a demanding peer-review process and only the best are selected to be funded bythe EuropeanCommission(EC). The InformationandCom- nication Technologies(ICT) theme has set out a number of challengeswithin this context, which cover topics such as cognitive systems, modular robotics, adaptive systems and societies of artefacts. * Symbrion was selected following the Call "Pervasive Adaptation" of the 2 "Future and Emerging Technologies (FET)" programme area. Itstarted on 1 February 2008 and will run for 5 years. FET Proactive addresses evolutionary and revolutionary approaches through multidisciplinary - operation and investigates new future technology options in response to emerging societal and industrial needs and identi?es new drivers for - search.

Approaches to Legal Rationality (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Dov M. Gabbay, Patrice Canivez, Shahid Rahman, Alexandre Thiercelin Approaches to Legal Rationality (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Dov M. Gabbay, Patrice Canivez, Shahid Rahman, Alexandre Thiercelin
R4,922 Discovery Miles 49 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Legal theory, political sciences, sociology, philosophy, logic, artificial intelligence: there are many approaches to legal argumentation. Each of them provides specific insights into highly complex phenomena. Different disciplines, but also different traditions in disciplines (e.g. analytical and continental traditions in philosophy) find here a rare occasion to meet. The present book contains contributions, both historical and thematic, from leading researchers in several of the most important approaches to legal rationality. One of the main issues is the relation between logic and law: the way logic is actually used in law, but also the way logic can make law explicit. An outstanding group of philosophers, logicians and jurists try to meet this issue. The book is more than a collection of papers. However different their respective conceptual tools may be, the authors share a common conception: legal argumentation is a specific argumentation context.

Advances in Physarum Machines - Sensing and Computing with Slime Mould (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Andrew Adamatzky Advances in Physarum Machines - Sensing and Computing with Slime Mould (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Andrew Adamatzky
R6,072 Discovery Miles 60 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is devoted to Slime mould Physarum polycephalum, which is a large single cell capable for distributed sensing, concurrent information processing, parallel computation and decentralized actuation. The ease of culturing and experimenting with Physarum makes this slime mould an ideal substrate for real-world implementations of unconventional sensing and computing devices The book is a treatise of theoretical and experimental laboratory studies on sensing and computing properties of slime mould, and on the development of mathematical and logical theories of Physarum behavior. It is shown how to make logical gates and circuits, electronic devices (memristors, diodes, transistors, wires, chemical and tactile sensors) with the slime mould. The book demonstrates how to modify properties of Physarum computing circuits with functional nano-particles and polymers, to interface the slime mould with field-programmable arrays, and to use Physarum as a controller of microbial fuel cells. A unique multi-agent model of slime is shown to serve well as a software slime mould capable for solving problems of computational geometry and graph optimization. The multiagent model is complemented by cellular automata models with parallel accelerations. Presented mathematical models inspired by Physarum include non-quantum implementation of Shor's factorization, structural learning, computation of shortest path tree on dynamic graphs, supply chain network design, p-adic computing and syllogistic reasoning. The book is a unique composition of vibrant and lavishly illustrated essays which will inspire scientists, engineers and artists to exploit natural phenomena in designs of future and emergent computing and sensing devices. It is a 'bible' of experimental computing with spatially extended living substrates, it spanstopics from biology of slime mould, to bio-sensing, to unconventional computing devices and robotics, non-classical logics and music and arts.

Applications of Neural Networks in High Assurance Systems (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Johann M. Ph. Schumann, Yan Liu Applications of Neural Networks in High Assurance Systems (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Johann M. Ph. Schumann, Yan Liu
R4,040 Discovery Miles 40 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Applications of Neural Networks in High Assurance Systems" is the first book directly addressing a key part of neural network technology: methods used to pass the tough verification and validation (V&V) standards required in many safety-critical applications. The book presents what kinds of evaluation methods have been developed across many sectors, and how to pass the tests. A new adaptive structure of V&V is developed in this book, different from the simple six sigma methods usually used for large-scale systems and different from the theorem-based approach used for simplified component subsystems.

Drones and Unmanned Aerial Systems - Legal and Social Implications for Security and Surveillance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016):... Drones and Unmanned Aerial Systems - Legal and Social Implications for Security and Surveillance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Ales Zavrsnik
R5,001 Discovery Miles 50 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book tackles the regulatory issues of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or Remotely-Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS), which have profound consequences for privacy, security and other fundamental liberties. Collectively known as "drones," they were initially deployed for military purposes: reconnaissance, surveillance and extrajudicial executions. Today, we are witnessing a growth of their use into the civilian and humanitarian domain. They are increasingly used for goals as diverse as news gathering, aerial inspection of oil refinery flare stacks, mapping of the Amazonian rain-forest, crop spraying and search and rescue operations. The civil use of drones is becoming a reality in the European Union and in the US.The drone revolution may be a new technological revolution. Proliferation of the next generation of "recreational" drones show how drones will be sold as any other consumer item. The cultural perception of the technology is shifting, as drones are increasingly being used for humanitarian activities, on one hand, but they can also firmly be situated in the prevailing modes of postmodern governance on the other hand. This work will be of interest to researchers in Criminology and Criminal Justice interested in issues related to surveillance, security, privacy, and technology. It will also provide a criminological background for related legal issues, such as privacy law, aviation law, international criminal law, and comparative law.

Edwin Lughofer
R5,237 Discovery Miles 52 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In today's real-world applications, there is an increasing demand of integrating new information and knowledge on-demand into model building processes to account for changing system dynamics, new operating conditions, varying human behaviors or environmental influences. Evolving fuzzy systems (EFS) are a powerful tool to cope with this requirement, as they are able to automatically adapt parameters, expand their structure and extend their memory on-the-fly, allowing on-line/real-time modeling. This book comprises several evolving fuzzy systems approaches which have emerged during the last decade and highlights the most important incremental learning methods used. The second part is dedicated to advanced concepts for increasing performance, robustness, process-safety and reliability, for enhancing user-friendliness and enlarging the field of applicability of EFS and for improving the interpretability and understandability of the evolved models. The third part underlines the usefulness and necessity of evolving fuzzy systems in several online real-world application scenarios, provides an outline of potential future applications and raises open problems and new challenges for the next generation evolving systems, including human-inspired evolving machines. The book includes basic principles, concepts, algorithms and theoretic results underlined by illustrations. It is dedicated to researchers from the field of fuzzy systems, machine learning, data mining and system identification as well as engineers and technicians who apply data-driven modeling techniques in real-world systems.

Dynamics of Information Systems - Theory and Applications (Hardcover, Edition.): Michael Hirsch, Panos M. Pardalos, Robert... Dynamics of Information Systems - Theory and Applications (Hardcover, Edition.)
Michael Hirsch, Panos M. Pardalos, Robert Murphey
R2,719 Discovery Miles 27 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Our understanding of information and information dynamics has outgrown classical information theory. The theory does not account for the value or influence of information within the context of a system or network and does not explain how these properties might influence how information flows though and interacts with a system. The invited chapters in this collection present new theories, methods, and applications that address some of these limitations.

Dynamics of Information Systems presents state-of-the-art research explaining the importance of information in the evolution of a distributed or networked system. This book presents techniques for measuring the value or significance of information within the context of a system. Each chapter reveals a unique topic or perspective from experts in this exciting area of research.

These newly developed techniques have numerous applications including: the detection of terrorist networks, the design of highly functioning businesses and computer systems, modeling the distributed sensory and control physiology of animals, quantum entanglement and genome modeling, multi-robotic systems design, as well as industrial and manufacturing safety.

Tracking and Sensor Data Fusion - Methodological Framework and Selected Applications (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Wolfgang Koch Tracking and Sensor Data Fusion - Methodological Framework and Selected Applications (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Wolfgang Koch
R4,662 Discovery Miles 46 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sensor Data Fusion is the process of combining incomplete and imperfect pieces of mutually complementary sensor information in such a way that a better understanding of an underlying real-world phenomenon is achieved. Typically, this insight is either unobtainable otherwise or a fusion result exceeds what can be produced from a single sensor output in accuracy, reliability, or cost. This book provides an introduction Sensor Data Fusion, as an information technology as well as a branch of engineering science and informatics. Part I presents a coherent methodological framework, thus providing the prerequisites for discussing selected applications in Part II of the book. The presentation mirrors the author's views on the subject and emphasizes his own contributions to the development of particular aspects. With some delay, Sensor Data Fusion is likely to develop along lines similar to the evolution of another modern key technology whose origin is in the military domain, the Internet. It is the author's firm conviction that until now, scientists and engineers have only scratched the surface of the vast range of opportunities for research, engineering, and product development that still waits to be explored: the Internet of the Sensors.

Flow, Gesture, and Spaces in Free Jazz - Towards a Theory of Collaboration (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Guerino Mazzola Flow, Gesture, and Spaces in Free Jazz - Towards a Theory of Collaboration (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Guerino Mazzola; Contributions by Mathias Rissi, Nathan Kennedy; Paul B. Cherlin
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Let's try to play the music and not the background. Ornette Coleman, liner notes of the LP "Free Jazz" 20] WhenIbegantocreateacourseonfreejazz, theriskofsuchanenterprise was immediately apparent: I knew that Cecil Taylor had failed to teach such a matter, and that for other, more academic instructors, the topic was still a sort of outlandish adventure. To be clear, we are not talking about tea- ing improvisation here-a di?erent, and also problematic, matter-rather, we wish to create a scholarly discourse about free jazz as a cultural achievement, and follow its genealogy from the American jazz tradition through its various outbranchings, suchastheEuropeanandJapanesejazzconceptionsandint- pretations. We also wish to discuss some of the underlying mechanisms that are extant in free improvisation, things that could be called technical aspects. Such a discourse bears the ?avor of a contradicto in adjecto: Teachingthe unteachable, the very negation of rules, above all those posited by white jazz theorists, and talking about the making of sounds without aiming at so-called factual results and all those intellectual sedimentations: is this not a suicidal topic? My own endeavors as a free jazz pianist have informed and advanced my conviction that this art has never been theorized in a satisfactory way, not even by Ekkehard Jost in his unequaled, phenomenologically precise p- neering book "Free Jazz" 57].

Conceptual Graphs and Fuzzy Logic - A Fusion for Representing and Reasoning with Linguistic Information (Hardcover, Edition.):... Conceptual Graphs and Fuzzy Logic - A Fusion for Representing and Reasoning with Linguistic Information (Hardcover, Edition.)
Tru Hoang Cao
R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this volume, first we formulate a framework of fuzzy types to represent both partial truth and uncertainty about concept and relation types in conceptual graphs. Like fuzzy attribute values, fuzzy types also form a lattice laying a common ground for lattice-based computation of fuzzy granules. Second, for automated reasoning with fuzzy conceptual graphs, we develop foundations of order-sorted fuzzy set logic programming, extending the theory of annotated logic programs of Kifer and Subrahmanian (1992). Third, we show some recent applications of fuzzy conceptual graphs to modelling and computing with generally quantified statements, approximate knowledge retrieval, and natural language query understanding.

Interactive Collaborative Information Systems (Hardcover, 2010 Ed.): Robert Babuska, Frans C. a. Groen Interactive Collaborative Information Systems (Hardcover, 2010 Ed.)
Robert Babuska, Frans C. a. Groen
R5,277 Discovery Miles 52 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The increasing complexity of our world demands new perspectives on the role of technology in decision making. Human decision making has its li- tations in terms of information-processing capacity. We need new technology to cope with the increasingly complex and information-rich nature of our modern society. This is particularly true for critical environments such as crisis management and tra?c management, where humans need to engage in close collaborations with arti?cial systems to observe and understand the situation and respond in a sensible way. We believe that close collaborations between humans and arti?cial systems will become essential and that the importance of research into Interactive Collaborative Information Systems (ICIS) is self-evident. Developments in information and communication technology have ra- cally changed our working environments. The vast amount of information available nowadays and the wirelessly networked nature of our modern so- ety open up new opportunities to handle di?cult decision-making situations such as computer-supported situation assessment and distributed decision making. To make good use of these new possibilities, we need to update our traditional views on the role and capabilities of information systems. The aim of the Interactive Collaborative Information Systems project is to develop techniques that support humans in complex information en- ronments and that facilitate distributed decision-making capabilities. ICIS emphasizes the importance of building actor-agent communities: close c- laborations between human and arti?cial actors that highlight their comp- mentary capabilities, and in which task distribution is ?exible and adaptive.

Jan Romportl, Eva Zackova, Jozef Kelemen
R3,584 R3,324 Discovery Miles 33 240 Save R260 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an edited collection of chapters based on the papers presented at the conference "Beyond AI: Artificial Dreams" held in Pilsen in November 2012. The aim of the conference was to question deep-rooted ideas of artificial intelligence and cast critical reflection on methods standing at its foundations. Artificial Dreams epitomize our controversial quest for non-biological intelligence and therefore the contributors of this book tried to fully exploit such a controversy in their respective chapters, which resulted in an interdisciplinary dialogue between experts from engineering, natural sciences and humanities. While pursuing the Artificial Dreams, it has become clear that it is still more and more difficult to draw a clear divide between human and machine. And therefore this book tries to portrait such an image of what lies beyond artificial intelligence: we can see the disappearing human-machine divide, a very important phenomenon of nowadays technological society, the phenomenon which is often uncritically praised, or hypocritically condemned. And so this phenomenon found its place in the subtitle of the whole volume as well as in the title of the chapter of Kevin Warwick, one of the keynote speakers at "Beyond AI: Artificial Dreams".

Robotic Systems for Handling and Assembly (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Daniel Schutz, Friedrich Wahl Robotic Systems for Handling and Assembly (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Daniel Schutz, Friedrich Wahl
R5,239 Discovery Miles 52 390 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Although parallel robots are known to offer many advantages with respect to accuracy, dynamics, and stiffness, major breakthroughs in industrial applications have not yet taken place. This is due to a knowledge gap preventing fast and precise execution of industrial handling and assembly tasks. This book focuses on the design, modeling, and control of innovative parallel structures as well as the integration of novel machine elements. Special attention is paid to the integration of active components into lightweight links and passive joints. In addition, new control concepts are introduced to minimize structural vibrations. Although the optimization of robot systems itself allows a reduction of cycle times, these can be further decreased by improved path planning, robot programming, and automated assembly planning concepts described by 25 contributions within this book. The content of this volume is subdivided into four main parts dealing with Modeling and Design, System Implementation, Control and Programming as well as Adaptronics and Components. This book is aimed at researchers and postgraduates working in the field of parallel robots as well as practicing engineers dealing with industrial robot development and robotic applications.
